In Vietnam, if a newly transferred officer couldn't pretty quickly get up to speed in a combat unit - if he was deemed actually dangerous to his unit - he might be  'fragged'  (somebody rolled a grenade into his tent) and his troops hoped for better luck with the next OCS idjit they were assigned.


Who you wanted to serve under was somebody you had served with for a number of months, a battlefield promotion, somebody you felt was not going to get your butt killed just out of ignorance and inexperience.
