my 401K from a previous employer hasn't lost much

Posted By: Cluck cluck on 2008-11-20
In Reply to: Question - 401K

but it's in low risk investments, a lot of bonds, and so when things get better, it probably won't rise as quickly as other 401k's. I'm a chicken.

And then, that employer who does not
health insurance will be fined. Obama has not told us how much the fine will be, but how many small business owners are going to be able to afford this if they cannot afford the insurance?
I only lost $1000 so far-Hubby lost $2000 in a week (sm)

so, I called his financial advisor yesterday and told him to put hubby in a "safe" plan. It's now in a money market fund that is part of his IRA.

I have no choice. I have to stay where I am. I have no "safe" available. Neither of us will be able to retire on what is now in our 401Ks and you're not the only one. We couldn't buy a car with Both our 401Ks, let alone live on it.

We are late starters for retirement  not until our late 40s funds (most of our employers did not offer pensions). We are now of the first retirement tier and although we own our home outright, if we live until we are 90, there is no way we can live off retirement 401Ks or SS.

My husband's father told him back in the 50s that we would experience something like what is happening today and stated it would be worse than the ཙ crash. It is sure starting to look that way, but we will survive some way, I hope.

We need to pray for the people on SS now that cannot survive. I, for one, would love to help them, but can't help ourselves at this moment.

If I ever receive an email like that from my employer...

..I will IMMEDIATELY begin to send out resumes and when I find another job, I will quit.  I will give the courtesy of two weeks' notice, though, because one of us should be professional.  However, my association with an employer like this will end immediately.

I don't think Washington gets the fact WE are their employer.....
And to think on September 18, 2008, they were ready to impose Martial Law because our entire economic and political infrastructure was headed toward collapse? THAT'S SCARY. So much for "Land of the Free" eh?
Obama says you can keep your employer health care....
but if you don't have, the government will step in. Under his tax proposals, how long do you think business will be able to afford health care for employees? Not very darned long. So, in the end, he gets what he wants...government controlled health care. He has changed the way he described it to try to end around the socialism tag of universal health care. Nice try, but no cigar. He is not fooling me. But, I don't take every word that falls out of his mouth as gospel like some do either (and I am not singling you out specifically).
Employer provided medical insurance

originated, I believe, during FDR's New Deal.  When wages were capped, employers found a way to circumvent this by providing ''sickness insurance'' for their employees, thus giving them a raise without violating the wage caps.

Another example of government meddling.  Had they not imposed wage caps, employers would have been able to keep paying their employees and give raises to enable them to afford their own healthcare.  But instead, we grew the employer-provided healthcare system we have now and people experience ''job lock,'' unable to move to another employer because of pre-existing conditions which may not be covered by a new company's insurance plan.

Of course it's income, always has been.  Same as use of a company car, or executive housing provided by a company (both of which are taxable to the extent they are used outside of actual business activities.)   I'm amazed nobody until now has taxed insurance.

Does this constitute a new tax on people earning under $250 thousand (or $235 thousand, or whatever the new number is?)

employer based-programs subsidize insurance...
not just make it available--and therein lies my problem.
You better not have a 401K
Democrats now want to take your 401K from you and tax the crap out of it beforehand.  They also want to set up a government pension where everyone will pay 5% of they pay into a mandated pension plan.  Obama is supporting this.  Where does it all end?  You don't call this complete government takeover?  Liberals in the white house will be the death of a free democracy. They will kill this country.
No 401K here either....... sm
In fact, no real savings to speak of. I'm winging it (no pun intended....okay, pun intended) from paycheck to paycheck.
401K

If you want to blame someone for your 401K,
nm
We will also be trashing our 401K if the O gets in....sm
...and as I've posted before, if it comes right down to it, I WILL stop working and let the govt take care of me.

I now make $60,000 a year, give or take, and work 12 hours a day 7 days a week. I cannot possibly work any more, and I cannot afford to have the O take my money away and give it to people who don't work at all. When that middle class umbrella cuts in half again...and since it's now 120,000, it could be real soon for me.....there's no way, no how I'll stand for more taxes from my blood and sweat as it is.

As my husband says..... We'll quit working, and become good little communists....if it comes right down to it....and if they try to our guns away, we will go down fighting....and if the thought police come to our door because they don't like what we think? Oh well....we'll take a few of them with us.....

1984 will be here...in ol' 2009......and it ain't pretty.

I am STILL pulling for McCain......as Rush says, if we have to drag Yosemite Sam's behind over the finish line, we have to drag it over....and it's gotta be done.....

My husband and I have had the same 401K, of which 1/2 is.....sm
General Dynamic stock, the company he has worked for for 27 years. Well, our stash there is now about half what it was, our retirement, essentially. We are hoping and praying that by staying into the market that we will be able to recoup some of this as the market rebounds..GOD WILLING!!! I am sooooo sorry for all the folk who have gotten hurt in the banking collapse and the crash, so not fair to hard-working Americans. We need stricter laws, I think, stricter regulations once again on banking and corporations. JMHO
401K/retirement fund

You can't "take" your pension and 401K out of the stock market if you are not retirement age.  We are stuck with whatever the companies we work for invest in. my husband and I have some choices about where we invest our 401K but they all involve mutual funds, stocks, bonds, etc.

WHAT 401K? Mine evaporated after the
And since my job will probably end up in India soon anyway, I'll be the next one needing a government handout. So bet your bippy I'm voting for a democratic president!
re-did 401k's or IRAs since the election?
i saw a couple of people saying they would if Obama was elected.  I re-did mine.  Did you?
Oh geez -- my 401K is now LESS than half of
And the feds are now going to buy STOCK in failing companies with the bailout money.  Real intelligent.  Where's MY 'bailout' ?
Yeah, and if he wins, I will be pulling my 401K

I don't want to pay any more taxes on my 401K than I have to. O wants to tax it. We already pay taxes on it when we take distribution, so that's double taxation and I want no part of it.  I don't have much but I sure want to keep what I have.

A lot can happen in the next 2 days and hopefully, things will go from blue to red where needed.

Doesn't matter - my 401K is losing an average of $3K
per DAY. Not per week, per DAY. If the loss continues at this rate, it will hit a zero balance and I'll have nuthin' to lose. So I'm voting for Obama, cuz I sure as he11 don't want that old Republican prune taxing my HEALTH CARE next.
I saw Jim Cramer this morning too. I have J&J stock and my 401K through Merrill Lynch
I am really upset and not sure what to do.

Your previous posts
Arent you the one who posted you were in the military and when asked about it, the truth came out that family members had been in the military, not you?  So, are you spinning the untruths again?  Or are you someone else using the same initials?
It was probably the previous owner.
Geez.
not previous poster but
I actually know several people of mixed race (black/white), who are openly racist against whites.  Not saying that Obama is or isn't, but it can happen.
Previous post
The democrats voted over 90% with their own party just as McCain did with his (Bush). Go to factcheck.org.

Imbicilic? That's juvenile. Just because you don't agree and are a hot-headed Obama follower doesn't mean you have the right to call my posts imbicilic. I have never once degraded my own character by calling an Obama supporter an imbicile. Grow up.
I'm not the previous poster but....(sm)
I personally know about a dozen people, friends and relatives, who fit her post.

I know more about Obama than any of them, but they don't give a darn who the real man is behind the facade that he chooses to show the world.

Not to mention the documentary made during the election made that shows Obama voters, who knew/know next to nothing about the man they had just voted for...and didn't care, even when things were pointed out to them.

Some people are so uninformed who voted for Obama. My mother, my sister-in-law included, just to name a few. They only voted the democrat party like they always did...could care less who the real Obama is.....
Have they done that with previous pres?
If they have done this with previous presidents, I really couldn't care less.  Anyone know the answer to this?
No need to worry about your 401k, democrats would like to absord it into the Social Security system.

Exactly, hasn't shown us one way to pay for any

At least she hasn't EVER put down her country

Yes, why hasn't anything been mentioned about that?
She had the meeting yesterday with them. I didn't hear a thing about it.
What makes you think he hasn't?

Scott McClellan Says Helen Thomas Opposes 'War on Terrorism'

By E&P Staff

Published: October 13, 2005 3:50 PM ET

NEW YORKQuestions today from longtime White House reporter Helen Thomas caused White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan to declare that she opposes the war on terrorism. His response caused one of Thomas's colleagues, Terry Moran, to leap to her defense.

Here is the exchange from the official transcript:

THOMAS What does the President mean by total victory -- that we will never leave Iraq until we have total victory? What does that mean?

McCLELLAN: Free and democratic Iraq in the heart of the Middle East, because a free and democratic Iraq in the heart of the Middle East will be a major blow to the ambitions --

THOMAS If they ask us to leave, then we'll leave?

MR. McCLELLAN: I'm trying to respond. A free and democratic Iraq in the heart of the broader Middle East will be a major blow to the ambitions of al Qaeda and their terrorist associates. They want to establish or impose their rule over the broader Middle East -- we saw that in the Zawahiri letter that was released earlier this week by the intelligence community.

THOMAS They also know we invaded Iraq.

McCLELLAN: Well, Helen, the President recognizes that we are engaged in a global war on terrorism. And when you're engaged in a war, it's not always pleasant, and it's certainly a last resort. But when you engage in a war, you take the fight to the enemy, you go on the offense. And that's exactly what we are doing. We are fighting them there so that we don't have to fight them here. September 11th taught us --

THOMAS It has nothing to do with -- Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

McCLELLAN: Well, you have a very different view of the war on terrorism, and I'm sure you're opposed to the broader war on terrorism. The President recognizes this requires a comprehensive strategy, and that this is a broad war, that it is not a law enforcement matter.

Terry.

TERRY MORAN On what basis do you say Helen is opposed to the broader war on terrorism?

McCLELLAN: Well, she certainly expressed her concerns about Afghanistan and Iraq and going into those two countries. I think I can go back and pull up her comments over the course of the past couple of years.

MORAN And speak for her, which is odd.

McCLELLAN: No, I said she may be, because certainly if you look at her comments over the course of the past couple of years, she's expressed her concerns --

THOMAS I'm opposed to preemptive war, unprovoked preemptive war.

MR. McCLELLAN: -- she's expressed her concerns.

Maybe no one answered the two previous posts...sm
becuase they're tired of getting jumped on by your side, you know, the anti-fanatic fanatics...lol....but true.

I've refrained from commenting on this issue, even though I feel as if Obama is hiding something. Wonder what it could be?

If you had read my previous posts
you would know I have a problem with Wright.  The others are just propaganda and I don't pay much attention to propaganda.
And if you read the previous decision on this
the judge raled on and on for pages about Berg and frivolous law suits.
And if you read the previous messages
Nice try!
He hasn't been officially charged

so it's all just hearsay at this point.  This is all a witch hunt pure and simple, however, everytime dems open up Pandora's box they are the ones who really get burned by it.

I'm not saying people who do something illegal and are found guilty shouldn't be punished Dem. or Rep. alike, but when people start opening up other people's closets they better be darn sure their's are squeaky clean....

How do you know the recruiter hasn't been to Iraq?
How do you know where he has been?  As punishment, he should be sent to war.  In other words, off with his head!  My, the mask is off now, isn't it. You know the mask.  The one where you pretend to hate the war but support the troops.
Democrat hasn't won the presidency yet.
Mostly because I can't wait to see what you all have to say when the country is still in shambles with a Democrat behind the wheel. I can't believe you all actually think a Dem in office will help. Entire Congress is Dem right now. What has it done lately?
Hasn't McCain only been in Congress also?
What executive experience does he have? From your answer, Palin seems more qualified than McCain even.
blaming someone you know nothing about for something that hasn't happened
x
Good question...why hasn't he? However,
adopted by a Kenyan man which makes him a Kenyan by law and because this man was Muslim, he was also Muslim, even though we already knew that because his mother brought him up Muslim. ANyway, he cannot be a citizen of this country after being adopted by this man from Kenya. He then has to go through immigration dept and their entire process to apply for US citizenship, which he has no papers to prove that either.

It has been nasty, hasn't it? On both sides...
McCain certainly would not have been my first choice either, but I voted for the candidate that I thought was the better of the two--I actually prefer a more conservative candidate than McCain. I do think that it is a shame that everyone has become so mean. I have tried not to be that way to anyone, although I guess some people see me as "rabid." What can you do? I at least know that I am not a name-caller or a racist, regardless of what others might think. Perhaps it will cool down. At any rate, have a good night!
I agree. It is a disgrace that he hasn't done it before now! nm
.
Yeah, or he just hasn't got a clue!
xx
How come it hasn't worked for the last 8 years?
Messiah of MT Stars - tells us oh revered and feared of the freak forum!
The big "O" aleady the worst and he hasn't been....
there a year yet. The next would be Jimmy Carter. Read up on the economy under HIM. Obama doesn't give two hoots about what "we" want. He is pushing through his personal agenda at lightning speed and the worst of it is he really believes this will work...kinda like Caesar fiddling while Rome burned around him. Well, they say ignorance is bliss and he must be one deliriously happy camper right about now.
Oh, please. She hasn't been drawn and quartered.
Including smart Republicans who absolutely do NOT want to see her as president.
Of course in your book it's old news; he still hasn't
