I have cancer and my husband was laid off - out of the blue - the first of the year. Since his company was changing insurance companies - we have to wait to see if we can afford COBRA. As it stands, it will be around $800 per month, and he can't count me as a dependent because my income is 28% of his gross. Daughter turned 18 in November - senior in high school - but since she's 18 - can't count her as a dependent. Don't think unemployment will cover COBRA and a $600 per month mortgage. In between treatments for cancer because I could not tolerate the last drug.....so, no care or insurance coverage at this point. Probably can't qualify for food stamps or medical card. So, lazy asses like us are proliferating all over the US. Unemployment phone systems are melting down (ours did last Monday) because they are designed to handle 80,000 calls and they received 800,000. Heckuva job. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps!
