xx
Thanks all! The recruiter sure did paint a much
rosier picture! Said the work is easy, no ESLs, flexibility, etc. Too bad, I guess I will keep looking.
I sure wish I could go paint gourds.

Or just about anything else.  Too poor to retire and can't think of another field to get into.  But best wishes to all of y'all who DO get to leave MT and move on to something else!

And if you do paint gourds...
how do you do this and where do you sell them? I love to paint little things like pumpkins and such for Halloween, but have never seen much of a call for it other than that time of year. Would love to make money doing that all year round!
About that paint brush

I don't paint everything with the same brush either.  Just as there are good people and bad people, I'm sure there are good MTSOs and bad MTSOs.  I think part of the problem has come about with the greed (or survival) if you want to call it that.  Let's say back maybe 20-30 years ago when MTSOs first gave medical facilities an option to deal with the fact that it was almost impossible to recruit qualified MTs.  Up until maybe 10 years ago one couldn't pick up a newspaper in any town big enough to support a hospital where the classified ads weren't begging for MTs. I travel a fair amount and always look at the classifieds and I haven't seen an ad for MTs in several years in ANY newspaper classified.

The MTSOs were able to fill a gap.  They would pay whatever bonuses were necessary, often 2-3x usual pay rates to get the work out and MTs would crank it out.  The TAT as I recall was 24 hours for H&Ps unless they were stat.  DS, if I remember anywhere close to accurately, the TAT was something like 4 days.  Then more MTSOs came on board and in order for them to get in the action they offered shorter TAT with the argument that faster TAT meant faster $$$.  It got to the point it was and IS ridiculous.  Would a hospital go bankrupt if they didn't get their DSs within 3 minutes?  I doubt it.

Next, we had the biiiiig MTSOs swallowing up the smaller ones until there are hardly any mom and pop MTSOs left.  Either they could sell out or be put out of business because there was no way they could compete.  Just like the big box stores, the big MTSOs can probably be profitable on maybe a 2% profit margin (volume), something that is totally impossible for a small MTSO.  I know this because I have been on both sides of the fence.  During my career I have worked for many hospitals and many MTSOs, some good, some not.  I never worked in a hospital where the facility and the medical staff did not appreciate and have great respect for their MTs and treat them with respect and dignity.

Then we have the MT training programs.  Again, probably good and bad.  We've all seen the ads that promise people they can take a short course and make $30,000 annually right out of the chute.  We all know better.  We all spent our blood, sweat and tears learning to be professional, COMPETENT MTs.  We all know that it takes a person generally in the neighborhood of 5 years to become proficient.  It takes a physician much longer yet we are expected to speak the language of medicine fluently in a relatively short period of time.  I cannot count the number of calls I have received and still receive from people who have taken this or that MT course and have never been able to find employment.  I tell them that the best I can do is give them a place where they can get an extensive list of MT companies who if they beg and plead MIGHT allow them to test and if they test and pass they MIGHT be offered a job.  I don't have the heart to tell them after spending their money to educate themselves, they would likely make more flippin' burgers.    I also have people asking me all the time how they can get into the MT business.  I have one word for them......DON'T.

Maybe MTs shouldn't go back so far as to be primma donnas as they were in the past but good grief!  MTs and medical records have always been non-revenue producing departments in medical facilities but for MTSOs MTs ARE the revenue producers.  It's kinda like killing the geese that lay the golden eggs.

I've seen the incompetence in medical records, including some of my family's records that have had to be corrected. We've all made mistakes because we are human but when someone transcribes pot of orange, it doesn't take much to see that person doesn't have a clue and the quality HAS sufffered because of inexperienced people trying to make a living under the most nefarious conditions.  I, for one, can't fault people for worrying about paying the rent and feeding their kids!

Do I paint gourds for a living s/m
I do and love every minute of it.
Do you really paint gourds? Just wondering.

I know it is off topic but cool, I wish I was an artist.  I might get into making jewelry and try to sell that.  I love artsy stuff.

Oh, by the way, I got tired too of not being paid to sit and stare at a screen and I did find something waaaay better.  Still work at home, but for a local hospital, very small, no VR at all, they don't like it.  Better benefits, better pay, better perks, better situation all the way around.

So, anyone out there miserable, yes, look.  You would be surprised of what you can find.  There is life beyond the nationals.

Do what I did and just send or email resumes out to every single thing you see.  The final choice is up to you, just listen to what each has to offer and if no good, go onto the next one.  Send to local places you would not even think twice about.  Local hospitals, small local transcription companies, even insurance companies who don't outsource hire transcriptionists.  Just try anything and everything.

Seek and ye shall find.  Well, I did anyway.

Gourdpainter going to paint gourds and do other things s/m

I would like to thank everyone who has responded to my posts in a nice way.    My presence here seems to stir much dissension which is not and never has been my intent.   I post on a number of forums that are of interest to me and never in all my days have I seen such HATEFUL, SPITEFUL people as some who post here.

To the friends I have met here, please stay in touch via email.

I wish all of you (even the hateful posters) the best.

pls email me more details about your service and clients (type of transcription), etc.
Selling MQ??
Sold to who? I don't know what you're referring to. Thanks in advance for clarifying.
Not sure who they are selling to but...sm
another national has offered us jobs with them and I don't think they are the right fit for me.
medquist selling

Has anyone out there heard anything about medquist selling the company??

Thanks for any info.

Selling business sm

Can you email me your contact info?

Thanks.

Difference in selling and just closing down
I can understand if there were legal issues regarding the sale of a company, but rumor has it that QT is just calling it quits, I would not think there would be any legal reason not to tell anyone, maybe they are just trying to prevent the MTs from leaving before the account has terminated. Still from what I read, most of the MTs would not go until the account was gone and the doors were shut, so I think it would more professional if QT told their transcriptionists what was going on.
No mention of selling, just that they won't have work for for me
xxxxxx
Never heard of them. Who are they selling to? Is MQ starting that again? nm
nm
Watch out selling them short...
you just might find another job which you think is better, and guess what, you've made a mistake and want to go back. By then you are stressed out and sorry for second-guessing. Take advice from someone who has been there and done that. Good luck whatever you decide to do, only hoping you save yourself grief. :)
No. We use DocuScribe and have no intentions of selling to MQ. sm
They have a separate department for technology, used to be Lanier, and they keep it separate. It is the same as using WebChartMD or EmDat. We pay what we use.
So, then, you're selling your knowledge
More output for the same pay means nothing more or less than that each line of knowledge (because that's what it is) is going for a lower price.

The value of VR to the client should not be price, but time. When price is the value proposition for VR, knowledge is being offered at a discount. It is positively idiotic for MTSOs to sell VR using price as the value proposition. The appropriate value proposition is TIME because VR should permit shorter turnarounds.

The question is, do MTSO's actually charge less for lines produced by VR? I'm not sure. If they do, they're giving away the store (and forcing the knowledge workers to discount their input).
And with so many smaller MTSOs selling out
to larger MTSOs with no warning, it certainly justifies our being suspicious and expecting the worse possible outcome.

I don't know about D...her silence during this entire month-long famine has made me second-guess my opinion of many of those at MDI-MD whom I previously thought very highly of. While selling MDI-MD wouldn't make her dishonest per se, at this point it feels like she is selling out her dedicated MTs.

I was completely exasperated with her email this morning which made no mention of any of our concerns and instead acted like it was regular Happy MDI Wednesday.

The lack of acknowledgement that there is a problem on more than one account just flabbergasts me.

thinking about selling my transcription service
and just wondering if any one has any opinion on interest in that. The person owning the company would make a minimum of $82,500 a year, running the business and doing some transcribing part time. It would be very easy to do some marketing and bring in some new accounts, which could easily push that 82500 to over 100000 a year. I have repetitive stress injury and my doctor has told me I need to find something else to do. I was thinking if there was an MT or a group of MT's (the company is incorporated so shares can be sold) that would like to get together, they can eliminate the middle man, earn retail price for their lines and establish job security, not to mention satisfaction. Price would be around $250,000 but like I said, a group of people could go together to cover that and with a little work in marketing, it could be paid off in three years. The business is about 10 years old and to the point where it is generating its own referrals. It could really go places if someone wanted to spend a little time marketing to a few new hospitals. Any one have any thoughts on this.
Proscript does not offshore - one of their selling points. nm

Speaking of selling QT to the Indian company. NM
xx
I say be aggressive... You are selling your services and need to let them know you are confident
I just accepted a position after turning down 3 because they were not exactly what I wanted.  If you are pateint and know exactly what you want, you can usually get it, (unless of course you want to transcribe for a doctor who speaks clear english, spells the hard words, talks really slow, but not too slow, and acutally realizes you are on the other side of the earphones ----- I can dream can't I??)
Politicians get money for selling us down river. How

Depends if it involves selling, bothering - sm
all your friends, family, friends of friends, etc. then NO. It is is something that is done at home or in an office w/o cold calls, etc., again no selling, then yes. My neighbor got sucked into a demo of that cookware that is so great but super expensive, something in the base, forget the name, needless to say she did not get into it, it was crazy what they expected you to do and foot the bill for as well. -- Personally I hate selling and obviously do not have an apptitude or attitude for it.
This sounds like one the MTSOs who got rich from selling
their company. You need to live in the real world sometime and see what you can do without. Your beer and champagne will be gone, but so will the steaks, lobster, and even a fresh vegetable unless you grow them. Even better, try giving up some other things - aspirin, ibuprofen, kleenex, vitamins they recommend you take daily, doctors visits, dental care.

Sorry, LMAO, I never want to meet you or be around you. You are evil.
I wonder if those places ABC was talking about selling bulk identity theft...
information online with the internet could be getting the information from health records overseas. The identity theft is sold in bulk to bidders on the internet from overseas. ABC I think had a special on it but never did identify where all of this information was gleaned. Something to consider I guess
That's good news. I love Keystrokes, and I hate to think of them selling. sm
The people are great, and I truly feel that I have finally found a home.  Still, business is business.  I have a friend who has been with Transcend for years and is very happy there, but I want no part of it.  I plan on working until I'm 70, so I'm crossing my fingers that the bottom does fall out for me before then.
Yep, it's for selling some kind of health supplements from home, like an Amway organization. nm
s
InterPro Medical...Hope this doesn't appear to be selling soul to devil.... but
I am seriously considering working for InterPro (a company owned by India that outsources).  Never thought I would, but I see they have BCBS insurance which starts in 30 days of employment, and other good benefits.   I am a diabetic with hypertension and paying almost $400.00 a month for Cobra health insurance, which will expire soon, thus will be left uninsured.  I've tried getting individual insurance, but no one will ensure because of my health problems.   Can anyone give me some specs on InterPro, i.e. current employees, etc.., or any other companies where insurance goes in effect 30 days of employment.

Keystrokes is not for sale at this time, and there are no plans for selling in the foreseeable futu
This is a rumor started by someone for absolutely no reason. There are a few companies out there who have approached Keystrokes about selling and have been turned down. A few have been very agressive and do not like to hear the word no.

The company has been growing steadily for the past 10 years and has agressive growth plans in place for the next 5 years.

If you have any questions, contact one of the owners or member of the management team directly. They will answer your questions.

This is just another example of someone trying to stir the pot.

Not every company is for sale, at any price. Although that may change in the future for the owners of Keystrokes, right now they enjoy growing the company and improving on what they have built. It will be several years before the idea of selling would be entertained.
P&G forced my sister to stop selling Mary Kay in her spare time...gotta SM!
This was years ago way before P&G even owned Revlon. It's not like my sister wore a white coat and created cosmetic formulas. She was a RECEPTIONIST!!! The Suits at P&G told her to make a choice because they didn't need an employee working for the competition...Give me a break!

BTW, the ONLY reason my sister even sold the MK was so she could get it 1/2 price.

Whatever you do on YOUR time is YOUR business!! (As long as no laws are being broken or ppl getting hurt)IMO
Crap!
Most hospitals don't know anything about the option of using overseas MTs. The MTSOs who offshore try to sell the hospitals on it by glorifying the savings. The MTSO benefits because they earn a higher profit margin.

You say that most MTSOs only send out work that their US MTs cannot do?????? Do you hear yourself? If an MTSO has an excess of work that their current staff is unable to complete in a timely manner, all they have to do is hire more US MTs. There is no excuse of offshoring. MTSO offshore because they choose to...bottom line. This gives them more money to line their pockets with.

I have worked as an Editor for a company who offshores. The quality of the work was laughable. I absolutely could not believe my eyes. The work that the overseas MTs produced is not wort the half a penny per line that the MTSOs pay them.
Crap. Yes with an E :) nm
,
They are Crap
They dont have any management skills, they are loosing every one these days. SO CRAPY ..
I don't think of them as crap
I think of them as human beings who provide bread and butter for me and for my family.
You know what - they do look like crap

The few I've seen that have been computer generated look utterly different than the way we typed 'em.  Actually its pretty infuriating that all the things that QA picked at us about have just been thrown out the window along with our jobs.  Obviously the facility never gave a hoot about consistent report format, BOS rules, etc.  Its demoralizing  that we worked so hard to make those reports perfect and now the facility gladly accepts messy garbage from a computer in order not to pay us, and the heck with patient care and accuracy.  The computer won't save their butts when they say the wrong thing in a report - the error will just stand as dictated.  I hope they enjoy presenting those documents in court for all the lawsuits they'll get down the road - and I'm sure it'll cost them more in court costs than it did to pay us.

Why is it that they'd rather pay ANYBODY - IT people, lawyers, wronged patients, etc. than to pay an MT?

Vianeta = Crap

I don't buy the $33+ an hour crap.

A lot of the crap schools do

take that as truth.  I know I certainly did not.  There are schools that cannot get you a foot in the door, let alone promise that you can make those amounts.

Then there are schools like Career Step who have information about grads who did/do make that amount...but they don't promise it and have never promised that their grads would make that wage.

It is very possible, but for a lot of us, it's not. We cannot really blame that on the schools. We need to blame ourselves and the companies for the the 5-7 cents a line that we settle for because, like all families, we need to feed our children and pay our bills.

I see it with colleges. You can make this much in this field, you can make that much in that field. It all depends on where you work, how productive you are, what state you are in, tons of factors. Same is true with MT, too many factors.

Nothing is ever promised, especially in this line of work.

I am just happy to have a job that I love, that I am able to have the opportunity to stay at home with my young daughter, have deductions come tax season.

Hey, I made more waitressing than I did doing transcription my first year, but does that mean I want to go back to waitressing? Not a chance.  I could have made more at McDonalds, in fact, but do I want to deal with that crap?  Not really.

I am thrilled about being an MT and would not trade it for the world and certainly didn't buy into the get rich scheme that a lot of those schools throw our way.

It's a shame that schools have to use that as a way to get people to attend, but it works..and let me tell you, I have plenty of people that have never ever done transcription that tell me what a cake job my job is, you've all heard it before.. I CAN DO THAT, ALL YOU DO IS TYPE

...and THOSE are the people that get backed into the corner by these schools thinkin that this is going to be something that they just type and can throw out lines like crazy and make that $40,000 a year....because we all know, MT is EASY... psshhh.  Those schools should have to provide proof and stats.

A crap shoot
Trust nothing from Spheris. You could luck out and get a decent manager and account, but it's a crap shoot. I don't have enough time, energy, or room to describe that circus. I can't believe most of them can sleep at night. Certainly you could find a few nice people and accounts to make your life tolerable, but suffice it to say, the culture is atrocious. I don't believe I ever received a straight answer from anyone in that place about anything of an important nature, and usually, the inquiries are just blatantly ignored. They could give a rip about the quality that goes to the client which made me crazy. Everyone is managed en masse. The platform I worked on was friendly. I can say that.
Sorry, but would not put up with that crap for any amount of $$$
nm
I believe that everyone else is dumping the crap on you
That should not be allowed but I think MTs are skipping jobs. The same thing happened to me lately. I don't think it's TT management. It's just lazy MTs who don't want the bother, so they cancel the job and keep trying until they get a better one, or sign out, blaming internet problems. Maybe today will be better.
The same crap is happening to me - sm
You wouldn't be working a company based out of Chicago, would you be?
Exactly!!! the archives are crap for sure...nm
xx
Im with you. I came to TT from the MQ crap and would love...
to make it work, but I dont think it is going to happen. I have questioned a few things and feel from reading elsewhere that I have been blatantly lied to. Last week was my most frustrating. I did make line count, but 2 accts, a mix of VR and traditional, and no kids or family, so I sit and wait all day every day pretty much. My pay check makes me cry. I am taking a second job today, AAMOF. It wont pay all my bills, but Im going to try anyway.

I have not been at TT long enough to be a fave of anyone, let alone mentioning initials. How would anyone know if they have faves or if there is just way less work or the work is being done way faster?
What crap. I get so tired of someone

who says you must not be very good, are slacking, etc. when someone complains about their company.  I worked for KS and there were whole weeks where there was no work on one of my accounts.  They account was an overflow account only, which I wasn't told about when I was hired, and if things were slow then we didn't get any work.

Just because you are overwhelmed with work on your account, doesn't mean another account isn't slow.  We have been on daily OT for months with my current company, but this week we are running out of work, most likely due to the holiday.  But prior to the OT there were accounts with very little work, with other accounts having more work than there were MTs trained for the account.   Just because someone doesn't have work doesn't mean they are a bad MT and I think even saying it when you don't know the facts reflects very badly on you.

ENOUGH WITH THIS ECONOMY CRAP --- sm
True, the economy has taken a whipping for the last 3 quarters or so -- recession as of last fall, less than a year, so how do you blame the continuing DECREASE in MT salary since the last 10-20 years?  Or maybe figure we dumb MTs can't add or put 1+1 together.  You middlemen/suits/MTSOs have been making a FORTUNE off of the back and sweat of hard-working, underpaid MTs or years and years (otherwise, you'd be in a different line of work, wouldn't you?) and you darned well know it.  So stop blaming the current economy!  What was your excuse 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 years ago?
Crap. I saw M-F and was going to apply. nm
