Not unusual, but some of the crappy companies

force MTs to work weekend days rather than simply hiring part-timers for weekend work like most companies do.

Hate these companies that want you to test BEFORE they tell you the crappy pay!!!
What a waste of time!!!
sick of working for crappy companies?
I have been thinking about starting my own company. I have done some research and it looks like all I really need is an FTP site, handhelds (that the doc's purchase themselves), and to get accounts. If anyone is interested in doing this with me let me know...or if anyone has any other information on starting a company input would be appreciated!

Why are we working as IC's and the companies are making profits off of us? Let's cut out the middle man and make the money we deserve!!

My idea is that a bunch of us get together and create a business. We put together a good sales letter...we all do our part in mailing these letters out, i.e., finding accounts.. We decide how much we want to charge per line, (I believe the going rate is around 11-14 cents a line).

These are just some ideas....Anyone interested??
going by the address in Clearwater - it's a pretty crappy crappy location
so it kind of makes me wonder what the company is like! I know that location shouldn't really matter, but let's be realistic - there are TONS OF PLACES in Clearwater with office space to rent, but judging by the address, I am pretty sure this is out of an apartment or house. Not that that should make a difference,
This is not unusual

Many companies do this however, there are many who do not.  Other companies may not dock you for errors, but will terminate you if you do not meet a certain QA percentage after a certain amount of time.  Please bear in mind that if you are assigned to an account with lots of ESLs and ESLs are not your specialty, you may have blanks.  Your overall score may end up being less than their required percentage of accuracy and you'll constantly get docked.

You may want to find out more about the account you would be working on if you were to take the position.  You have to be a very quality minded person.  This may not be the best deal for you if you are fairly new to transcription.

But this is NOT unusual...sm
MOST employers require their employees to work for a year before they provide paid vacation, not just transcription employers. EVERY job I have EVER had required 1 year of work before paid vacation, even fast food, so, this IS the norm! So, again....DUH!
Why would it be unusual to (sm)

audit someone during training?  Isn't that what training is for?  How would a person get out of training if their quality was bad?

Maybe I am misunderstanding this.

Why would that be so unusual? nm

Don't know the company, of course, but this is not unusual. sm
In many of these companies, the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. I've been waiting 5 weeks to start with one company, but that's a record. It frequently takes 1-2 weeks to get everything ironed out. Don't panic yet, you are only one of many people the Acct. Mgr. is dealing with, probably many of them new. Usually you have a little while to get things ironed out before they will worry about you putting in all your time. Good luck.
Weird, but not all that unusual unfortunately.
This makes people feel even more disconnected. I think most people who work at home don't want to be interrupted by a lot of extraneous chatter - and perhaps a few would even be happy if they didn't hear anything from one year to the next but those are the exceptions.

A very different problem is when you only hear about your screwups - otherwise, you just get silence on the wire.

Both modes (dead silence and 'no news is good news') of communications violate everything we've learned over the years about work-related social interactions - and in my opinion, both of them are extremely unhealthy. In fact, they're both evidence of bad management.
You are indeed an unusual person
if you are happy with a $15,000 decrease in your earnings over 3 years....considering the price of EVERYTHING you purchase has gone UP, unless you know something I don't know.  My husband and I are on a fixed income and we notice the price of EVERYTHING goes up it seems on a daily basis except for our retirement checks.
A very unusual question. You on a fishing
expedition for compliments?
it is not unusual for a bank to hold a
check over a certain amount for up to a week.
Okay.. It is just so unusual to see anyone on this board so excited to hear about a new job.. Maybe
we've all just become too cynical. They must be newbies though. Boy oh boy has the newness of jobs wore off. I have been looking but I just never get that excited. I just think, oh, I just hope this one is better than the last bad experience. It is hard not to get cynical sometimes, isnt it? We all just want a place to call home and there is just so much disappointment out there. I was impressed that they were so excited and couldnt wait to here from PMSI.. oh well back to my drawing board. I guess time will tell if it is everything they were hoping for.
Nope, haven't noticed a thing different or unusual. All's well here. nm
xx
Most contracts said either party can quit or fire at any time. Would be unusual to get locked into
s
Their pay is crappy! nm
nm
Really crappy ESLs. nt

They don't want to pay, accounts are crappy, you have to
fight to get your paycheck, they want you to edit offshore work, etc.
Maybe it was your attitude as well as your crappy sm
transcription skills that got you let go from there.
RE: crappy doctors and good MTs

Any halfwit could have figured out that she was talking about the doctor's crappy dictating skills, not their doctoring skills.  She never said she couldn't do the work either.  Every MT would like an occasional good dictator, but those all go overseas or to VR.  You're the one with the bad attitude and condescending tone.

Crappy pay, no communication, inept QA. NM

I've gotten some really crappy stuff too and it just
wears me out.  I can't make lines, but can't claim no work either.  I'll have a really bad day, the next day will be so-so, and the next day is pretty good, and then it starts all over.   I don't mind no work, but I wish when I ran out the first time I could just take the rest of the shift off.
Crappy hours at first, but guess what
My son years ago got a job, only the weekends but he was on call. He quit. That was not a good idea because had he stayed his salary now would be through the roof. He quit a union job. My husband now works for the same company. When he started, he was what they called on the board. Well, anytime a person not able to work their shift, my hubby got that- all hours- anytime-and now he has seniority and paid off in the long run for him. No wonder outsiders being given/offered our jobs. No one should ever complain about their jobs.
Again with the crappy reading skills
With each post, you clarify how you are able to make your grandiose claims about VR. Reading, as they say, is fundamental, and once you ignore that whole pesky reading for context thing, I'm sure VR does get a lot easier. Try it again, slowly this time, and you'll see that I qualified the 1000 lines number by following it with an 'or'. I know...it requires actually a little more effort than looking for squiggly red lines under the word, but you may find you actually can follow a discussion better. But don't try it in your work. It might actually slow you down.
Obviously you don't receive the crappy quality of drafts...sm
that I see all day long on this system.  They claim that it learns but it doesn't, because my coworkers and I make the same corrections over and over again to the same things.
GOOD MTs aren't ... but there are tons of crappy ones
Finding one that is actually GOOD in this business? nearly impossible. I do editing and QA (and have been an MT for 22 years) and I see nothing but horrid work day in and day out.
I work for SoftScript w/ another crappy system
nm
Crappy company with crazy platform and

I quit because it was a crappy company. I worked in QA.
There was so much crap like you are spewing here.  My standards are much higher than SS and I told H so when I quit.
Trust me.. I have come from a lot of crappy jobs that is why it was so refreshing to hear some
excitement over the possibility of another job.. one that may be a great hidden treasure. I just think it is great when people never lose that newbie enthusiam even after some not-so-great experiences. I admire you totally and best wishes.. I hope this is the job you have looked for..If so, sign me up LOL
Sounds like the place I used to work for. The one with crappy program?
nm
Sounds awesome to me. I only get $2.50 a page and the crappy part is...
If I only type half a page, I get paid for half, a quarter of a page, three quarters, and so on. I'm not happy about this at all, especially since all I've been given to go by for examples are a few reports typed by someone else. There have been days I've worked 10 to 12 hours and I'm quick! I think you should be paid by the line or character. Except in your case, if they are strictly going by pages, you'd better jump on it!
No, if they knowingly tested you when you had crappy sound effects what would they treat you like a
.
I agree. This past year has been terrible with MQ. Never enough work, crappy dictators, no pay for

weekends and holidays anymore etc etc I guess with all their legal woes we are paying for it and then have to have few blanks and 98% QA on dictators I have never even heard of. A joke to be sure and no matter how good the new pay plan is or they allow everyone a window to work then everyone will be working all hours to get lines for incentive which they probably never will. MQ is losing a lot of MTs and I expect that will continue. They seem to just keep pushing and pushing and it almost seems like they want people to leave so it really makes you wonder what is going on here. They really just dont care.

My account went to India, have been struggling to make any money for the last month, crappy work. nm
xx
TransTech and Medware, are these companies considered large, medium-sized or small companies? (sm)
TIA
Yikes.. That is only inline with companies like Focus and such. "Real" companies pay their MTs
decent rate.  I make over 5 cpl editing. So, if I got that slap in the face, I'd be outta there.
Do the research...most companies, and not just MT companies, do not pay for maternity leave...
we get time off but not paid...and I really don't even understand the point of you posting this...
How do you know which companies are Nationals and which are smaller companies.
Is there a list somewhere? I'm new to this.
By "most of the companies", I meant MORE than MT companies.
clarification
Sten-Tel is the platform. Different companies use it, pay and how companies run are different. nm
:P
Nobody said MT companies were not for profit companies. (sm)....
As MTs we are an important segment of what it takes for the company to thrive, but we are still just part of the whole structure.

Not trying to be argumentative, just think sometimes we get that "I'm the quarterback" attitude and forget that we can't get anywhere without our line men.
Companies that outsource to other companies?
Anyone know of any reliable companies that will outsource to American companies and pay a decent line rate? I am amazed at what the companies charge and then want to offer in this business anymore.

2 companies with that name. Was this the NJ job? nm
.
I have been through a lot of companies and
they are all the same.  I just found that out not too long ago.  I am with a company now that everyone cheers about.  They are just the same as everyone else.  Nothing to cheer about IMO.  This business has gone downhill fast.  Sad.
What companies, if any,
. . .

. . . hire and actually promote professionals who have forgotten more than many MTs know, have years and years of experience, work when needed, don't rock the boat, and produce excellent work?  At my company, the editors and managers usually have just a few years of experience as an MT, if any, and many have no management experience.  Some managers have never even seen a typed document.  That doesn't make sense.  What companies give one a chance to actually grow with them?  Any of them?  How do the promotions go to those who took an on-line class and have been an MT for 2 years?  Kudos to anyone who could answer this . . . Bewildered

He said that some companies do that, but
usually when they do there is a reason for it, so told me to keep an eye out for future class action lawsuits or that sometimes they use it as a means to withhold severance pay, etc.  IMO - basically it's a CYA letter.  Atty agreed.  But again, IMO, why be worried about a CYA letter if you have nothing to CYA for?  Any company that wants ex-employees to sign a release from future lawsuits is definitely not up for nomination for Employer of the Year, that's for sure and just one more bit of proof that it isn't the MLSs at fault.   I'm not concerned about it, but I'm sure as heck not signing it either.  I just think it's hilarious that a few Transcend groupies come out of the woodwork ready to blame the MLSs that left as if they weren't the GOOD transcriptionists and that's why they left.  Seems to me if they weren't any good they wouldn't be able to get hired anywhere and so would want to stay put where they know they have a sure thing.
Some Companies...
Charge you per report for their useless template. What a rip off...
QA Companies
Anyone who works as a QA; I am curious as to what you think of the company you work for?  Good or bad.  Looking for a new QA position and would like some information on the companies.  Thanks.
Here are some companies
First Choice Medical
QT Medical
JLG - some accounts still on WP.
TeleType

That is all I know of right now.

Good luck.
Some Companies Pay Less
Some companies, especially small ones, lure you in by starting you at less and tell you that once you're off probation in a couple of weeks your line rate will be raised a couple of cents.  Months later, despite quality work and that pitch-in attitude during backlog periods, you're still making 6 cents a line.  A lot of good begging does....What a joke these companies are...........
