anyone know of overflow or vacation work available?

I work 2 jobs that I love, but both of them are 2-3 times a month and average 100 minutes of dictation at a time.  I rather like the nature of this work as it is given to and I usually have 2-3 days to complete it.  I have lots of experience--ER, other hospital (except ops), psychiatric hospitals and offices (which I loved!), specialty clinics of all types--it's just that I really don't want to give up the 2 jobs that I already have and love, so I would like more of the same kind of thing.  I thought overflow or filling in for vacations would be a good option, if I could find it.  Anyone know of anything like this?  I am considered an excellent Transcriptionist by all whom I've worked for.

overflow work
I work 20 hr/wk for SPi/CyMed on radiology. They need radiology MTs for Tue-Sat schedule right now. I work Sun-Thur. I have no benefits but I'm on social security and this works gret for me as a supplement to my SS check. I've been with them 1 year this week. I'll be out for hand surgery in a few weeks and I know for sure they'll need somebody then! I also know my supervisor will work with you on scheduling. I work for the Ohio office but I live in South, hurricane alley. Yes, Katrina got me but I have bounced back! I don't know if it's OK to give out my super's phone number, but if OK with admin of site, e-mail me for info. Best regards!
It is also only p.r.n./overflow work
I left a lot of blanks as well.  I'm not so sure I could strain that much.  Being overflow work is tough nookies to find a rhythm as well and I wonder how spaced apart the time would be before receiving the dictation.  Glad I'm not alone as even volume control and slowing down/speeding up was not really helping at all.  Oh well....  only lost about 1/2 an hour all in all.
Yes, it is all overflow - and there is not enough work for everyone! no msg

I also do overflow work for a clinic..
I charge 10 cpl, but I know that their other replacement charges 12 cpl. If it were a specialty clinic (mine currently is family practice and easy work), I would charge no less than 12 cpl. I'm not sure but it may also depend on where you live geographically.  I live in Idaho so I'm sure since our cost of living here is fairly cheap and that would be the standard. If you live in a larger place, maybe you could easily ask for more. Just giving you my input..
I got hit with router, but they only do overflow work
and we ran out of work constantly. They play favorites big time, so the good work goes to a few people and the rest of us got the left-over garbage. The tech ruined my computer and that cost me a big bucks to get fixed.
I work for a company that does overflow and I have been

with them for 5+ years.  I have never not had any work and rarely has there been a day when there weren't extra lines available.  A couple of times the hospital's system has gone down and they have asked if anyone wanted a a day off, or could adjust their schedule to work different hours than usual, but I think that has only happened twice.    I have a lot of dictators, though I tend to get the same 30 or so regularly.

It all depends on how the contract is setup, if they get a certain # of minutes a day, or if they just get whatever in-house can't handle.

I think it is a combo of all work being overflow and..sm
the fact that they overhire. Work has been low and slow for the past year. I have heard that some of the accts that we all heard about in that last conference call did not come on board--rumor, but other than the account that started in July to replace a lost one (and never has any work) and a clinic name I saw on the Community Pages (which a level 4 I'm sure will not be allowed to work), they have nothing new. Over the past year, they lost 2 of my accts. I have finally managed to replace them thanks to my persistence, but they are both overflow (like all of them) and low in work (like 99% of them). It just seems hard to get a PT job and still make 40 with them, but I guess we could try. Good luck.
WRONG - I work on 2 which are NOT overflow and know of 3 more sm
in my own STM group that are not.
Do all companies require you to work 1 year before you can take vacation?

Meaning you are an employee, of course.  Just wondering if there is any hope out there.  If you start with a company and it turns out horrible, then you have to start all over again, waiting for another year to go by.  I don't want to wish my life away!!

Thanks everyone!

But don't they just help other companies with overflow type work?
It seems to me that that would make the work load very unstable.
Yes, I work on solid accounts, not overflow.

Webmedx must be sending work to overflow co's as soon as...sm
regular employees start hitting overtime. The economy has an effect on the workload, I know, but not like this, not during peak flu season. Does anyone know for a fact that they are doing this? TIA
Yes. Last entry on community board. ALL Web work is overflow.
I am fairly sure all their accounts still have in-house transcription departments. All mine do. The Atlanta account you mentioned started the same time as my main and always has more work than my hospital, which is an account that has almost completely dried up over the last year. STM states they are saving work for their in-house MTs.
I am apparently being stiffed by a woman in Virginia for vacation coverage work I did. sm

I am not sure where I go from from here.  She told me that she would pay me for invoices from 06/26 and 07/11 on 07/22 (yesterday).  When I emailed her and asked her to verify that she had indeed paid me, she read the email (you can check on AOL) and did not respond.  It is only $338, but in my world right now, that is a lot of money to lose.  I blame myself because I broke one of my rules by working for someone who did not have direct deposit, and also by waiting for over a month to get my first check.  She did pay that one, but I am thinking now it was only because she still needed me to continue working to finish out her vacation coverage.

I suppose I can file a small claims suit, although I thought someone told me that you have to go to that state to file.  She's in Virginia and I am in Colorado.  I have a friend in that area, so perhaps he could do the preliminary leg work for me for that.  I was also going to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.  I thought of contacting her clients to let them know that although she is paid for her services, she does not pay others, but I am not sure if that is legal or not.

I am a bit frustrated -- mad at myself for trusting her -- and scared too because I was counting on the money.  Any ideas?

Thanks.

Con: Overflow work is cherry-picked from the git-go by the account's inhouse MTs. nm

I saw postings that all our work was overflow/extra support for hospitals. (sm)

Whatever happened, it has been ongoing since around the Memorial Day holiday.  I too am getting worried.  Christmas coming up, winter utility bills, not to mention the every day expenses we have in order to survive.

I am picking up a PT position.  May be a little tired working the 2, but for right now it covers my butt.

The hospital I work just contracted to send our overflow to MDI. I've been watching as our SM

minutes slowly dwindle.  Last meeting we had, we voiced our concerns about losing our work and Transcend/MDI outsourcing overseas, only to be told that administration is happy that TAT is being met and so they are going to continue to send work to MDI on a daily basis and we don't believe they are sending OUR work overseas.

My hospital is a prime account to be sent overseas, a medium-sized community hospital, three (count 'em, three) ESL who aren't hard to do at all with the resting being very good, very American dictators, easy to understand.  No way would a service give this account to an American MT who could stand to make a good pay check doing this account.

I think the next step is to get rid of us all and send everything out.  If that happens, that's it for me, I'm getting out of transcription all together.  I know I definitely won't go to MDI for a job, like they would put me on this account where I could pull in 2000+ lines a day.

I've worked too hard all these years to be treated like my knowledge, skills, and education doesn't matter and to be paid peanuts for these skills I have worked hard to acquire, improve, and maintain.

I'm just really bummed today.  My job future isn't looking too good right now.  I hope I'm wrong.

Vacation for SEs
Anyone know what is the procedure for taking vacation(s) as a MQ SE? How far in advance do you let them know, do they have a problem with it, etc.? Is there a limited amount of days you are allowed per year?
Vacation

All MQ offices seem to operate differently, but in mine I have had no problems.  I usually give several weeks to a month's notice, then I also remind them a week or so before I'm off.  I have never had any problems whatsoever.  I took off about three different weeks last summer over a 6 month period.  Plus, right after I was hired I had to take off for an already planned vacation and they didn't say a word.

I don't know the answer as to how much time you are allowed to take off.  It would seem to me being an SE (basically an IC) that legally they could not limit your time off.  Of course, that doesn't mean they won't complain about it.  I think if you give a few weeks notice there shouldn't be a problem.

I have vacation and PTO. I take off when I need to. I
usually take 10 days off in a row and then long weekends various times throughout the year.  I have even taken a day off with just 1 day notice when I was just needing a break.   I don't take advantage and I have about a month of accrued time now.  Sometimes if I'm taking off on a Friday for a long weekend I'll work extra during the week, or get up very early Friday and work, so I get my lines in, though I'm not asked to.   I think my company sees that so they don't hassle me when I take off.
Someone needs a vacation and bad!

Vacation? What is that?
:-)
Thanks! Im on vacation
until mid next week. More later!
Some MT's on vacation right now, but
But sometimes there is not even work on weekends.  Yuk!  Going to get worse before it gets better at Transtech -- too many MT's hired now and slow holiday period coming up.  Some of the accounts are only overflow accounts and temporary accounts that TT picked up recently, so look out for the bill collectors at the our doors around the first of 2008.
No, she is still there but has been on vacation. sm

If this is the right account. Actually, I think all the leads are there still and a few have been added.  ***Edited by Moderator***

Regarding vacation and PTO,
do you mean they are separate, 6 vacation days and then 1 week PTO, meaning 13 days total? and how do they differ between the 2? Thanks for your help.
Companies that allow you to take vacation
I work for a company that has paid time off, thing is they don't like you to take it. If you want to take off more than 1 week a year, they won't let you even if you don't care if you are paid for it. Does anyone work as an employee where you can actually take vacation without being without a job when you come back, the work is steady and the pay is good?
Vacation Coverage - IC
I work as an IC also, and I'm taking a few days off in just a few weeks. I let them know a month ahead of time. I'm the only one working for this company (very small) and she won't hire anyone else, so they know what they're in for when I'm gone. I don't know what they're going to do because they always had another girl for back up. The only bad thing I'll have more work than I can handle when I come back. I'm not sure how other companies handle the situation.
How much maximum vacation can you get
working at Webmedx. Thinking of applying but need to know about paid vacation days. I believe you get 10-11 the first year but I'd like to know how much vacation you get maximum after a few years. TIA
Uhh, as an IC? Vacation is unheard of in that

Staff appropriately and you won't have this problem.  The problem is relying on ICs as employee.  You cannot expect someone to just work and work with no time off - not gonna happen!!!

This is what goes against my grain.  These companies want employee types but only want to pay a very minimum line rate for evenings and then now are requiring that you take no time off or schedule time off and never have an emergency????

KS Vacation question (sm)

How does KS calculate your vacation time?  If you had 1 quarter in the year that did not meet the 12,000 lines, does that mean you get no vacation at all for that year?  In other words, If every month has 12,000 lines per pay period, except 1 or 2, no vacation at all for that year?

Can you take vacation days with no pay
and can you have holidays off with no pay. Is there a limit to how many days off a year you can take? Do you have to make up the time you are off? TIA
One week of vacation (IF you don't need it for something else)
Holy-moley, what have we come down to?
Vacation should be holidays

Remember when Don was on vacation?

Some were not keeping to their daily line commitments and a couple of accounts were out of  TAT.  She wrote:   WAIT TIL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME!   I like a spoonful of sugar with my medicine!  And humor is quite unusual in a boss.

It is Lkeystrokes@aol.com but she is on vacation through next week. sm

Your best bet would be to call Becky at the main office at 630-739-5520.

question about IC and vacation coverage pls sm
I was under the impression that as an IC I am not responsible for finding vacation or sick coverage for accounts; that would be up to the company I am contracted with (no written contract, just verbal but don't flame me it's worked for 4 years now).  What do other ICs do when they want to take time off (a foreign concept, I know I know)? Do you find your own coverage or let the company who has the accounts handle it?  This company has flip flopped so much - at one time we had to have our own coverage, another time we got major slapped for doing so as the accounts were theirs and they would handle coverage, and now seems to be swinging back to find your own or don't take vacay.  TIA.
I guess you have to vacation when your accounts
Coverage is too risky because that person gets their foot in the door, and it is a dog eat dog world.  The docs are great and I guess that's important.
Can you take vacation time and holidays
off? Can you work part-time or do they only have full-time MTs? TIA
Nice to know they don't care for us to have vacation

That is correct-no vacation at all for that year
person at KS would most likely be THE 1 to address, ya think? or not.
There are no laws governing vacation/sm

time.  Why would you assume this is not legal?  I don't work there, but it seems to me that this would be explained as part of the employment process and if the MT doesn't like that, then they wouldn't accept the job, right?

NC OVERFLOW
Very experienced RAD, ER MT, can train on site in the Raleigh area but prefer to work at home if possible.  Pay by report or exam only.  Can cover odd hours, holidays and weekends for the right situation.
I did overflow for them and there were
horrible.  At our local Kindred doctors that can't get a job anywhere else go to Kindred.  I would get dictation that was 6+ months old.  I was a subcontractor so don't know about insurance.
Does DSG do a lot of MQ overflow?
I worked at MQ and accepted a position with DSG.  After finishing the paperwork, I began to receive account specifics for DSG and noticed that some of those accounts were accounts I had worked on for MQ.  At the time, I just assumed that the accounts had been lost to DSG.  Are you saying that MQ contracts with DSG to outsource their overflow?  How long have they been doing this?
I don't know about MQ overflow but I have not
x
They may be doing overflow. SM
I don't think they are lying, since JMH in Miami sends all their work to India. It looks like they have every hospital account in Miami, Fl.

One thing, though, as far as I know, Diskriter has Broward General Medical Center, but this company may be doing overflow work.

Why haven't we heard of this company before? They sound huge.
NOT overflow
I have worked there for almost a year and it is definitely not overflow work.  I don't know what account you worked on but there is plenty of work on the accounts I work on except maybe the last day of the pay period.  Don't listen to these negative people...
yes, it is overflow
I worked there for a few years sometime ago. They actually told me that most of the accounts they have are overflow accounts. That is what they go after. They had possibly 1 account that was not overflow, but they lost it.
