Getting your cats declawed in my opinion
is inhumane. I would really reconsider it. They have caps that you can buy, relatively inexpensive and last for awhile, that you put on their nails. You glue them on over the nails. You can even do a color scheme in them if you like, pink, etc.

There are too many alternate ways out there to deter cats than declawing

We had our 2 indoor cats declawed, too.

They never go outside either and they both have done fine since.

All the vets I ever worked with had their cats declawed.

Never declawed any of the dozen cats I have had over my lifetime - sm
It is rare, in my opinion, that a cat cannot be trained to claw in appropriate places and not on furniture, etc. Are you providing good places for the kitty to claw, such as a nice scratch post (mine really love the sisal rope kind)? They also love those simple cardboard inserts that are in the Turbo Trackers and the Alpine Scratcher. When I get a new kitty I direct them to the appropriate places to claw and lavish praise. These acceptable places need to be some place you pass by often because the kitty wants you to be there when they are good. Mine run to the scratching posts because they know I am going to lavish praise on them. :-) If they claw somewhere they are not supposed to I immediatly squirt them with a water bottle set to stream. Something called a Scat Mat also keeps them away from the inappropriate places should they want to test you further. I have had young kittens, adult cats, you name it, and not a single one of them could not be trained to scratch where appropriate. I also have nice furniture (even leather). I would only declaw after I had exhausted all other options and it was a choice between that and giving up the cat. Just my two cents, for what it is worth. :-) Let us know what you decide. Best of luck!!
What is it with cats and Christmas trees?!
They just love to be under them!  Very cute!  Love the big gray and white one!
My brother's declawed cats have a great life
They stay indoors, they are spoiled rotten, they are happy cats. There are 4 of them, all adopted at different times, and you couldn't ask for more sociable content kittehs.
Any idea how to keep cats out of bird nests in trees? sm

This is the 4th day in a row I have had to pick up a dead, mauled bird (3rd baby).  I am assuming cats are the cause, since neighbors and I did not have a problem until this year, when we started seeing a couple of roaming cats.  My dog is no help as he is still a puppy and is afraid of the cats.

Anyway, does anyone know humane ways to keep cats from climbing the trees?  I know, you can't fight nature, but thought I would ask anyway.  Thank!

Better climb under a rock,
or have all the posts been there for years? Nothing new. Liz Taylor stole Eddie Fisher from his wife, then had affair with Richard Burton (who was married)- hmmm guess they were way past their prime (also dead) to make to DWTS- this happened in the 60s and Ingrid Bergman (in the 40s) had twins with a guy she was not married to (married to someone else.) Like I said, better just go to a remote island and be alone for it not to happen.
I need someone to climb on top of my house and shovel all the snow off the roof. It's getting pre

You have lost in your election, please go climb back under your rock
My daughter is in finances, owns her own home, goes to college part-time taking extra courses to advance her career. Frankly, my dear, I don’t know what you think but one thing I do know is please leave and go back to the other board- they might like you there. I based MY vote on the man, not the color of his skin but my daughter who is black could not make up her mind. What about that don’t you understand? I told her repubs did not have her back- too many old white folks. Face it, big L for loser.
I declawed one and not another.
I took in a kitten back in 1985. She was a big-time scratcher and ruined all my drapes, tore up two sofas, and a door jam. Nothing I did, no alternative scratching areas kept her from tearing up my furniture and climbing up my draperies. I was on the verge of giving her up. Instead, when she was about a year old, I had her declawed. I could tell that it was a different feeling for her, but she adjusted very quickly. She ended up living to the ripe old age of 20 in our house, doing no damage and very loved.

After she died, we took in another kitten from a rescue organization. This one is not declawed, but she has a totally different personality. She is very submissive, very sweet. She never puts out her claws for anything other than stretching briefly in sunspots on the floor. I keep her claws trimmed, and she is satisfied with that. Had she been an incorrigible scratcher like her predecessor, I would have had this cat declawed, too. I can offer a lifetime safe and loving home to cats, but I don't want my things torn up. So I really don't have any problem with declawing when necessary.
My first cat was declawed (sm)
because I lived at home with my mom and he was tearing up her 2-year-old custom-made curtains.

I had it done, stayed at home with him and babied him for a few days, and once he healed, did not seem to realize he didn't have them. He "scratched" the rest of his life with his nubs.

I wasn't going to declaw the second cat, but the first one was "scratching" everything and I guess she couldn't figure out why he could and she couldn't. I did notice, however, that her recovery time was longer (Cat #1 had it done pretty young).

Many years later, we got a kitten when cat #2 was about 11 years old. Cat #2 didn't do much scratching by then, and we were able to train Cat #3 not to scratch. We now have another clawed cat, adopted at age 5. He's a bit of a nuisance with his scratching, but it's not to the point where I'd have to do something. If it gets worse, I'll try the nail caps.

IMO it's a very individual thing between cat and owner. And I agree, I think it's better to do that than to subject the cat to abandonment, if that's the only negative behavior involved.
I think cats look beautiful - love pics of cats

They can also be he!! on wheels to live with and a major PITA.

I say this as my dog is barking at a leaf blowing by the front door.....

I declawed a cat and wish I hadn't.
Got new couch. Got new cat. Cat scratched couch. Declawed cat. DH out of work 4 months on disability, made sense to get a puppy, right? Not to the declawed cat, who lost her mind and started urinating in our bed. Also, she could not exercise properly when she couldn't hook those claws to climb, grab toys, etc.
Had to have mine declawed..
I have a Siamese who is very, very...did I mention very stubborn. She started destroying my couch, chairs, etc. I tried all the tricks mentioned below, spray bottle, stomping feet, yelling, double-sided tape, etc., and nothing worked. It just made her more determined to go after my furniture.

So, I eventually broke down and made an appointment for her to be declawed. It did not make her anymore aggressive, mean, etc. She got over the procedure within a couple of days and was fine after that. In fact, she still makes the scratching movements or tries to scratch the furniture years later except she's not ruining anything anymore.

I only got the front paws declawed, and it wasn't too terribly expensive (a lot cheaper than replacing furniture for sure). She is an inside only cat obviously, so we don't have to worry about her needing to defend herself outside or I obviously wouldn't have had this done.

She has had no problems either with behavior or medically since having this done 5-6 years ago. She is a spoiled and quite content cat who still thinks she rules the house front claws or not. So, basically she's happy, and we are happy to not have our house trashed.
I just adopted a declawed cat
who was abandoned. she looks like she has no toes, with floppy little hair tufts and going the wrong directions. Like other poster said, she does not cover her stuff in the litter box (maybe feels she cannot manage it) and her attitude is so defensive to the other cats, even after a month, and i wonder if it isn't because she feels so defenseless. I sure would not do it to a cat.
Maybe she is defensive because she was declawed
And being approached by possibly feral cats, no wonder she is wary of your other cat.  I wonder if she just doesnt  have litter box issues, regardless of being declawed.  Maybe bad litter habits are what got her put out.  I just think her being declawed may not have anything to do with her issues.  Maybe, but, IMO, pobably not.
I have mine declawed, never again. I had leather
furniture that he was ruining (he had 32 claws) so I had him declawed. He went outside to sit on the front porch in the sun occasionally. Two dogs killed him because he couldn't climb a tree. He was the sweetest, beautiful Himalayan mix, talked to me all the time.
trees
Glad you made it through the storm okay. . I have lots of trees all around my house, which I love, but when the wind gets up, it is pretty scary. . There are several that could totally destroy the house. . My brother lives in a mobile home about a half mile from me. . I couldn't get him on the phone that night - later I found out he spent about 2 hours sitting in his truck - he thought that would be safer than his trailer. . I told him the next time, come to my house, though, like I said, with all the trees, not sure how safe it is. . I really wish I had a basement. . None of my neighbors have basements either. .
treeS?
When I was a kid, there was this really rich girl in the neighborhood whose birthday was around Christmastime. So they had a Christmas tree and a Birthday tree.

I've also entertained putting up multiple trees... in my fantasy about winning the lotto ;-)

If you do have more than one tree, that is wonderful!!! You put up the tree I didn't. I'm a 'real' tree gal and just afford it this year.

It made me sad at first, but I feel a little better now knowing I won't have to take it down, etc. So your post made me happy. Taking down the tree always made me sad. I left one up until Valentine's Day once because I just liked looking at it.

Anyhow, thanks for the venue to ramble and happy new year to you :-)
climbing trees
nm
Year before last I had 2 trees up
I have a big house and don’t find that unusual for more than 1.
We take our trees down after Jan 6, Epiphany.
After 24 years of marriage, we managed to collect a lot of ornaments. One tree is only for glass ornaments, most of which I inherited from mom and grandmother. Our kids are grown, so no worry about breakage, but that tree is usually real and goes in our front room. In our family room, we have an old artificial tree. The tree was being thrown out by a friend, and so we asked for it, and he laughed and said, "Sure!" For 10 years we've been using that throw-away tree. It's pretty Charlie Brown-ish when it's naked, but we throw all the little collected things on it -- the stuff the kids made out of macaroni when they were little, ornaments we picked up here and there or were given to us as gifts. All of those ornaments will be divided up and given to our sons when they move out. One is 20 and the other is 18, so perhaps soon, at least some of those will be adorning someone else's first Christmas tree.

It is a pain to take it all down, so I'm not looking forward to Sunday. Lots of sorting and storage to be done, and then everything has to get packed away up in the attic for another year.
question about pre-lit Christmas trees
Looking into a new artificial tree - mine's pretty old and falling apart.  Seems like for such a huge investment a pre-lit tree might not be a good idea - how do they hold up - how many years for the lights?  Read some reviews on line and different stores and said they have to be stored in climate controlled area - not hot attic or garage.  Anybody know?
Too funny - there's an add above for prelit trees!
Anyhoo, I got mine at Penney's last year, first artifical one I've ever had.  I love it.  It's beautiful, convenient.  I thought I'd miss the smell of a real tree but there are so many beautiful candles now (Yankee Candles are my fave) or tart warmers - Mistletoe, etc, that make the whole house smell soooo good!
Where in FL do iguanas live in trees? (sm)
Ok, I grew up in North Florida, never saw an iguana other than someone's pet....have been all over Florida but never knew that iguanas lived in trees there! Anyone?
Oh sadie, too bad you can't see the forest for the trees...

giving something away when you already have the same exact thing is not being a Grinch...didn't your family teach you it is better to give than to receive? Maybe it would be nice to put a smile on another child's face for a change...so sad that you are so materialistic you can't see that.

I'm taking down my trees today boy what a job it is.
//

Artificial only for us - I'm allergic to "real" trees.
.
I picked the olives off trees in Greece
and was I surprised. Tasted nothing like what I was used to. I love Milk Duds also. I think they are really good when you go to the movies along with your popcorn and cola. I hardly buy them if not at the movies, wonder why?
Ugggg. Christmas trees in the stores already!

Isn't it just back to school right now? Went to Walmart today to get school supplies and they were no longer on clearance.  What has replaced them?

Drum roll:  A tiny bit of Halloween decor, a few Thanksgiving napkins and plates and

Tons of lit Christmas tress.  Many aisles of decorations with lights, garland.  Even the CHRISTMAS JEWELRY is out.  Forget the half off on notebooks and pens, hurry and get your candy cane earrings before it's too late!!

Ahhhhhkkkk.  My kids are already writing lists for Christmas.  My pocket book cannot take it.  My DH gave me 50 bucks to buy milk, and get all of our 9 year old girl's birthday gifts who is turning 9 in 2 weeks.  So... who can think about Christmas? Anybody got any ideas on how to deal with all this stress? Would appreciate any comments on above experience.  Thanks in advance!

Ohhh! CHRISTMAS trees! ha ha ... I thought
;D
That is very sweet! I have never thought of giving trees before!
~
Agree, not to mention those weird looking Christmas trees they have
throughout their stores.  What's up with that? We had around 80 people from our church offer to bell ring in front of stores on Saturday and the Salvation Army said on that day alone they brought in more dollars than any other day since bell ringing starting this season.  I was one of those bell ringers and not one single person who passed by me was discourteous and most people gave!  A simple smile and MERRY CHRISTMAS means a lot to people!  Target would do better by following that example.
I think it's better to be up front
and honest from the start about lending $$$ and stuff (cosigning loans next?), kinda nipping it in the bud as it were. I'll be thinking good thoughts for you.
I had a guy jump right in front of me
As if he didn't see me.  I didn't want to make a scene, but I thought it was very rude.  I absolutely hate cell phone usage in public.  It is very annoying.  I will purposefully make noise to interrupt.  I think cell phone usage while driving should be banned as well.  Most people are not paying the least bit of attention when they are driving and talking on a cell phone.  It is worse than driving drunk in my opinion.
especially in front of children
Once I was waiting of food at Taco Bell and a girl was talking to an employee and bragging about how when she worked in another restaurant she and her co-workers stole so much "sh*t" over and continued to repeat the word as well a further other words my son didn't need to hear. Finally I said "Please, he is only 9, can you talk about something else. She did shut up after that.
My little dog rides with me in the front
Most newer vehicles, including mine, have the ability to TURN OFF the air bag on the passenger side, which mine is unless there is a human rider. Also, we have a "Doggie car seat". A basket type seat which he rides in. There is a hook to secure him that attaches to his collar/harness. It allows him to sit high up where he can see out all the windows, plus he cannot climb on me to cause an accident. We need to treat our dogs like children and put them in a car seat. He loves it; he gets to see around and go anywhere momma goes. PS: DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG IN THE CAR, EVEN WITH THE WINDOW DOWN, IN ANY KIND OF WEATHER. The interior of your car can heat to over 100 degrees even in 50 degree weather. My sister lost two of her babies when her husband left them in the car last spring.

I liked the part where the guy had to run in front - sm
of his truck and put a rock under the tire to try to stop it, and it kept rolling over the rock. I had a truck like that once.....
better shot of the front - sm
try, try again. This is before the previous owner refinished it, it is totally black now (with all the rust removed).
We usually have babies on the front - sm
and back porches, though I got rid of the nest on the back table on the porch as it was just a drag having to worry about if the dogs were going to figure it out and eat the babies, had it barricaded in a bit last year and all surived though. It was right by the back door which we let the dogs in and out from so it took them a while to get used to that. We did not hang out plants this year out front but when we do we always end up with a nest in the plant, makes it hard to water but we still manage to do it. But no nests so far front or back, had a family of rabbits under the shed though that all survived from whatI can tell, at least our dogs did not get any. Last year had a cardinal build a nest about 2.5 feet off the ground in the backyard and my Lab knocked the babies out, we put them back in the nest and moved it to a safe location near where they had it but they ended up dying. The birds tried again though, this time in a tree right by the back porch, high enough so the dogs could not reach luckily and they all made it that time. Neat to watch every year, will have to keep a look out. The birds have been stealing my husky's tuffs of fur I am pulling out from his massive shedding going on rigiht now. Seeing them flying off with fur in their beaks is funny.
Maybe you can work on your daughter to not ask to sit up front
Though, I agree, your DH is the parent and this should be a no-brainer for him. She absolutely should not be up front. Maybe if you can convince her that she shouldn't be in the front seat, as her older sister seems to know, then she won't ask. If she doesn't ask, dad won't put her up front.
It does stink, though. I've been married for 22 years to a really great guy. But occasionally, he just has no common sense, and yeah, I have to manipulate a situation. I'd be out of my mind, just like you, if my kid survived cancer and then was injured or killed because of a silly, preventable thing, like having her in the back seat.
Having known the risks up front, I decided
myself never to have a child after 30 even. I had my first at 21 and then my daughter was born when I was 29. I just had always heard the risks and did not want to take them myself. Everyone can do what they want but the older here is not always the better.
Interesting front garden
Interesting use of wooly thyme.
occasionally blatantly in front of them - usually (sm)
In an underhanded way - he is treating me as "subordinate" in a less obvious way in front of them most of the time. It's hard to explain. But to sum it up, my son told me the other day, "Mommy, I feel like Daddy is always trying to make you think he likes you but I don't think he really does."
Old dog keeps chewing front paw - new habit for him
any idea what causes it and if it is okay to put tea tree oil on it? He is 14 years old and has been doing this for a couple of weeks.  Has a raw spot there now.
No problem. Pay varies. Usually you buy something up front sm
and then you get paid for the shop on top of that. Usually around 20.00 for the entire shop. Takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on where you go. Metro area where? I live in Alabama.
Mine is in the front room
which is supposed to be I guess the "formal living room", but we never used it for that. I'm right next to two big windows so I can look out and see what's happening around me. My daugher's computer is right near mine so I can monitor her and my youngest daughter uses it for her playroom. I'm somewhat cluttered, but not overly so. Lot of pictures (my autograph collection), pens, scanner, steno book, dictionary. I've love to have doors put in, but I doubt that will ever happen.
Not sure about that. I'll have to check. I just know the gum in the front is very
bad and you can see on my teeth where it should be.  It is about 1/4 inch below that, honestly.  My nephew last night ordered Ultra soft toothbrushes on Amazon.com.  Like they told me at the dentist, this is a hereditary condition as well, and my dad had it and lost all his teeth when he was a young man.
Me too! One time hubby and I pulled in front SM

of a car doing that and put our turn signal on. Then another car pulled in front of us and did the same thing. It was a TRAIN!!! For miles it went on like that down the highway, and the guy behind us never got a clue.
