my vet would not declaw him (only his front paws) if he was not going to be an indoor cat.  My sister-in-law has a cat that her front paws are declawed and she lets her out.  Unfortunately the cat comes home beat up all the time.  In my opinion, declawed or not, cats live longer and make for happier pets when kept inside.  My heart always goes out to the cat when I see them wander the neighborhood (they are not feral) knowing they have a very short life span because their owners think they want to go outside.
