I live in Michigan and we just had 3 days of solid rain and $4.19/gal for gas. sm

Posted By: MT and worn out on 2008-09-16
In Reply to: In Louisville, it is hard to find gas just - see message

We got the leftovers from Ike. Our gas is still $4.19 a gallon. We did not have the power outages that KY, IL, etc had, but we did have 3-4 tornadoes touch down near the MI/IN border. We have a lot of dams that are in danger of being breached and our whole side of the state is in a flash flood watch until Thursday. They figure most rivers will crest near the border by Thursday.

I live in Michigan....and yes, we are in a recession. sm
Regardless of what the drive-by media says, we are in a full-fledged recession. Our governor even signed legislation giving big breaks to movie companies who come to Michigan to film their movies. Well that might be alright for the east side of the state, but that doesn't help us on the west side of the state. Electrolux and Bissell to name a few were only the tip of the iceberg. Our schools are going south in a handbasket also. Things just don't look good for Michigan. Especially now that gas is over $4 a gallon. I am predicting $5 by the end of the month, first part of July and any tourism dollars that would be spent here by out of state people or traveling locals, will now be kept at home. Michigan needs help, but then don't we all.
We live in Michigan and we keep our heat set at 68. sm
I live in Michigan and it gets COLD!!!. Not as cold as Wyoming, but I swear, sometimes....lol.

The only time the heat gets turned up any higher than 70 is on bath night. Then we also have a little propane heater we got from our local surplus store that helps in the bathroom.

In my office upstairs, I have an old heat lamp from our turtle tank that has a clamp type base and I have that clamped to the shelf over my keyboard. I have it aimed so it hits my hands and helps keep them warm. I figure if it works for our turtle, it will work for me. LOL.

We dress in layers too, even the 12 yo son. DH has some problems as he is diabetic, but Eddie Bauer Ragg wool socks are worth every penny you pay for them.

We do the plastic on the windows and we also spent some big bucks on plexi-glass and got two 45 x 64 pieces for our DR and KIT. We hold them in with double faced tape and then seal them with the same kind of tape they use on ductwork for trailers and RV's.

I agree with other posters too, get your thyroid checked. My doc told me that was one of the reasons for people being cold all the time.

Good luck.
I'm with you. I live in west Michigan. I am more than ready. nm

(Re: pic): Now THERE is a solid reason to
Wow! (or should I say -
'meow'!
You sound like you have a solid financial

head on your shoulders.  Your little one is lucky to have you.  I don't wish ill on anyone and hope I didn't come across as sounding as though single parents don't deserve the EIC.  They certainly do.  Public assistance is another story though and that's why I distinguished between the 2 in my statement.  Too many get it that shouldn't.

It's not stressful to have the savings; for me, it's stressful getting it in there.  We also do a lot of pre-tax savings, but I still like a refund.  Thanks for the well wishes.  We're hoping to start rebuilding this month.  Houses cost a lot more now to build than they did 10 years ago and we've got 2 kids more than we had then, too.

What do you use to polish your solid-surface countertop?

We have a Corian-type (manmade, not granite or quartz) countertop and we have tried just about everything, including what the manufacturer recommends and even car polish. Our house is only a little over a year old, but the countertops are already starting to look a little scratched and dull.

I love the color - it is a deep brick red - but if I had it to do over again, I would get a lighter color. This dark color shows every little scratch.

Any suggestions?

Might try coconut oil from the health food store. It's solid at room temp., so you can rub it in

I make around $50,000 but I work 7 days a week and long days, although I'm not a fast typer eithe
I think even if your fast, you'd still have to work more than 40 hours a week to make that but I could be wrong.
I remember those days too, but these days they don't want make any child felt left out. They wan
to make each of them feel special and that they have accomplished something.  My 8-year-old brings a certificate of some kind during the day, accelerated reader award, trustworthy award, jr. achievement award, etc.  I guess in a way, no one kid is pointed out as the "teacher's pet" or have the other kids being jealous of him/her for getting this or that award.
don't want to rain on your parade, but I too --sm
have been in bad relationships and the one thing that stuck out in your post was the fact that he has been married and divorced twice. Just keep in mind that he has been divorced twice for a reason, and those reasons eventually carry over into the next relationship, as well. It may take 10 years before you know all his faults. I am not saying he is not the one for you, but just use your head, as well as your heart, and keep in mind that he must not have been all that perfect if he was divorced twice. I wish you luck.
I don't mean to rain on your parade...sm
But when I went to that 'breeder's' website, I saw a LOT of red flags: lots of info. about puppies-puppies-puppies!, shipping, taking credit cards, lots of use of the word 'teacup' no mention of a health guarantee, no mention of them doing anything with their dogs other than breeding them, no mention of screening potential buyers to make sure the breed is right for you, etc. Pretty much just seems like, 'Hey we've got plenty of puppies, if you have the money, we'll ship you one, no questions asked!' Not good.

I know you might have fallen in love with him because of his picture, but anybody can put up pretty pictures on a website. If I were you, I would RUN, and find a *reputable* breeder of Yorkies instead of that one.

My suggestion to anyone is to *first* go to the AKC Parent Club for any breed they're interested in. (Just search under whatever the name of the breed plus 'of America' and you'll find it.) There, you'll get all the facts, good and bad, about the breed, and you can get a referral to a *reputable* breeder (and see their Code of Ethics), where you will *dramatically* increase your chances of getting a *healthy,* happy puppy with a sound temperament and correct physical conformation, bred by an expert on the breed.

Here is the website for the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America: http://ytca.org/mainview.htm (scroll down to the bottom).

If I were you, I'd try to find a Yorkie breeder through their Breeder Referral section, hopefully close enough that you don't have to worry about shipping. You might have to be patient and wait for their next litter though, because reputable breeders aren't breeding their dogs like crazy just so they can sell puppies and make $$$. But it will be worth the wait.

Also read the Yorkie Club's section on 'teacups' - http://www.ytca.org/faq.html#A (Calling them 'teacups' is really just a sales tactic used by non-reputable breeders. There really is no such thing as a 'teacup.')

I know you didn't ask for my advice on all this and I've been a little long-winded, but I did breed rescue for many years, and I learned a lot about dogs. I'm not an expert on Yorkies, but I do know how to spot someone who is absolutely not a reputable breeder, and I do know that the parent club is the best source of honest info. for any breed. It would save a lot of heartache if people would go there to start their research first, IMO. Best of luck (and health) to you and your future baby! ;o)

We had rain twice today, so
we are pretty happy here.

If you expect $60K to rain down from heaven think again

My Bible tells me that the Lord will provide (and has provided) for all of my needs, it does not say he will send money raining down for me whenever I get myself into excess debt.  Rest assured that the Lord will provide the faithful with all that they need and plenty of what they want.  It is your right to believe otherwise, but do not step on my Christian beliefs in the process.

Luke 12:28, "If then God so clothe the grass, which is today in the field, and tomorrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?"

No rain forest, no swimming anywhere here
I have also heard about the things you speak of. He says under the skin and it feels like a worm and he presses on it and it will stop?? I know it is not psychiatric and I would say he is probably the most laid back person, no stress that he ever displays to me so ?? I am so glad (hope that does not sound wrong) to hear someone else had similar. I will certainly pass on.
Help me find a yellow rain slicker
I kid you not. My 20 yo son has asked for a yellow rain hat and slicker for Christmas. He's always been a bit... ummm .... eccentric. He has shown me a picture, and it really looks like the Gorton's fisherman.

On the practical side, my son is majoring in meteorology, so I guess this could be useful one day and more than just a strange fashion statement.

So, does anyone know where I can find something like this for a 6' tall, 190-pound young man?

High of 46 degrees & rain today in

Pay close attention to the post above...It is righter than rain!!!

I'm 5 minutes from Ft. Benning. They graduate on Friday. It will be cold rain here sm
I, myself, and VERY disappointed that it did not snow. I've been here 10 years and have been praying for snow!!! It's only 38 now and won't get much colder than this all week - high in the mid 40s or so. Congrats to your nephew!
Well, up here in Michigan
It is sooo cold, better today though. And luckily very sunny! IT's a real winter here after several years of "fake" winters!
I'm from Michigan and s/m

I have 6 in my home, 2 teens, 2 younger (7&8), 2 adults.  I spend minimum of $150 a week on food, probably closer to $200.  I do plan my meals out for the week prior to going.  I really need to get back to my couponing days!  I will do it religiously for months and then fade out when I don't have time to do it.  When I do couponing, I spend about the same, but get a lot more food for my buck.

This also includes cat food, cat liter and dog food (little dog), cleaning supplies.

In Michigan we have . . .
Saunder's hot fudge ice cream sundaes (and other yummy stuff), Vernor's ginger ale, Faygo soda (mostly fruit flavors), Stroh's beer and ice cream, Better Made potatoe chips, and Velvet peanut butter.
I don't know about PA, but in Michigan.....
First off....document, document, document. Then call your local housing inspector. Tell him your sad tale of woe. They will come out and look and see if you have a valid complaint. A place I once lived in had BIG, BLACK BUG!!! Really big ones...The housing people made the landlord spray and eliminate the problem. THey were water bugs of some sort.

If that does not work, see if you have something like a Landlord/Tenent Association. They advocate for the renter against people such as your slumlord.

Depending on your income, try your local Legal Aid society. They are lawyers who help based on your income. Sliding scale at its best.

What I did was send MY slumlord (a management company) a certified, return receipt requested letter informing him that until he brought my apartment up to city housing standards, I was not going to pay my rent. But I made sure that I opened a savings account to keep the rent money in so he didn't think I was doing this because I did not want to pay my rent. Things eventually got fixed, but I had to go to the landlord directly to get my deposit back.

How PA works, I don't know, but I am sure you must have something similar.

Good luck.
Only 10 here in west Michigan.
Windchill is -15 though. And snowing to beat the band to boot.
Michigan passed it and I support it.
I think anyone who is seriously ill should have whatever is available to help ease their pain.  I know it helps with nausea of chemotherapy too.  I think it should be decriminalized.  People are killed every day by drunk driving or those who go into violent rages or blackouts.  Most pot smokers will only get enraged if you try to take away their Dorito's!
20 here on the west side of Michigan. nm

perspective: 10 below in Michigan -- hate it!!

there's no preparing for this.  for us, 39 degrees is a heat wave.

just get all the supplies you could need and stay in.  the dog and three cats have cabin fever.  i have to go out and shovel -- just shoot me!!!  kid has a temp of 103.  this is so harsh.  beyond words... stay warm.

Hubby was just in Michigan two weeks ago and brought back a bag. Nothing like em!!!!!!

In Michigan they will issue an arrest warrant
If you don't show up for jury duty, they will issue a warrant.  Wondering where the case was that a rapist was released due to juror not showing up?  Something doesn't sound quite right there.
Today in Michigan it's a balmy 6 degrees with -18 wind chill
With those kind of temperatures, today thermostat is on 70 and that's comfortable.  But I have on sweat pants, a sweatshirt, and warm wooly socks.  Usually it's at 68 and 62 at night.

The department you deal with in Michigan for things like this is called "Friend of the Court".
You need to get in touch with your version of this in your state and tell them what is going on and file a form for re-do the visitation agreement. You may even have to see your original divorce attorney. We went through this with my husband's ex-wife and he filed papers to amend the visitation and what they call an "in pro per" form. Which basically is a DIY form. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but you need to get started now to get your ducks in a row.

Have you thought about talking to somebody at the local VA office in your state or city? Those guys are a wealth of information.

Good luck to you.
I do live in Arkansas - my parents live up in Branson so I'm in Missouri quite often!

Calling all you animal lovers - live and let live or intervene? - sm

I have a dilemma.  I am an animal lover and have something I cannot come to a conclusion about.  At a restaurant where I eat lunch every Friday with a friend of mine, I have noticed a young male kitty hanging around outside looking for food.  This past week he ran up to my friend and rubbed her legs and quietly meowed.  I purposely did not try to pet him because I knew I would get attached and ignored him.  Well, ever since then I find myself thinking about him and wanting to rescue him.  Meanwhile, I already have 4 inside cats (2 rescues, 2 Maine Coons) and hubby really does not want another cat in the house because a few years ago I promised we would  never have more than 4 (had up to 5 at one point previously).  I actually have a huge screened deck he could stay on indefinitely because I do not believe in letting cats run loose for their own safety.  I could provide plenty of food, a warm place to sleep, and veterinary care.  At some point I would even probably work him into our household, but I just cannot do it at the moment.  Just not sure I would be doing right by that kitty because I am sure he would be upset and confused for a good while as to where he was and what was going on, but is that better than being hungry and cold?  I know there are lots of animal lovers out there.  What does everyone think??

I'm a live-and-let-live person but had to draw the line

after I found HUGE holes in the walkway between my house and barn.  I thought they were just little mice stealing grain, but then I spotted one and it was a HONKIN RAT!  My poor olderly cat was out there with me at the time and saw it, and he hissed at it and ran away!

I asked for advice on what to do at a local agricultural board, because I have other animals and didn't want to use poison and conventional traps weren't working.  They advised putting a large pale of water out with some seeds floating in it, figuring the rats would go for the seeds and end up drowning.  That was a no-go because the water just froze up solid.  I wound up reluctantly going with Decon because I just can't have my house destroyed.  I haven't had seen any more rats or evidence of them stealing grain, so I'm guessing they have died.  The guy at the grain store promised me the rats would not die in the building and stink the joint up, rather they would crawl off and die outside.  I don't know if I believe that, as it is still winter here and decomposition would be holding off until it warms up.  We'll see, but at least the destruction has been halted.

Good luck and I too say have no mercy, because you just don't need them destroying hour house or causing a spark chewing wires and burnin' the place down.  It is war!

  (How un-PC is this emoticon?!)

Make them live outside? This is so funny! Ours live outside, where they WANT to be. sm
Not all dogs want to be in "indoor" dogs, mind you. They have plenty of space to run around and play, fenced, and if they are brought in during bad weather they whine at the back door to go back out! So before you comment on outside dogs, you really need to get your facts straight. Seriously. Not all dogs are made or want to be inside all of the time.
Where do you live?? I live in Atlanta
and have been to the symphony here and definitely no hats- you can never go wrong with black dress/slacks. I like to dress a little more for this but the rules are definitely not prim and proper here.
I come from the old school, but live and let live - sm
Well, I tried "cohabitating" with a boyfriend when I was 22. We dated for a year, and 3 weeks after we moved in together, he went back to his ex-wife. Never again. I've been married 18 years now to the same guy. Guess I lucked out.

I don't think it's right to do in a biblical sense (even felt that way when I moved in with a guy but my young hormones took over my common sense) but it's sad more people aren't married, they choose to just live together without a great commitment. Then again, as my atty (he lives at the end of our street so I see him often when walking the dogs) always says, his father told him it should be $5,000 for a marriage license and free to get divorced.

As far as the children are concerned, well, I think you should be married before you have children but again, live and let live. I just don't like seeing children have to grow up without the other parent if it can be helped.

The NFL network recently interviewed a former NFL player, Warren Sapp. He was asked why we have so many jerks in the NFL like Terrell Owens, Adam Pacman Jones, etc. He said they all shared a common factor - no father or father figure in their lives growing up. He said to look at players who are humble and don't cause trouble - they are the product of a 2 parent household. It's sad to me because it's commonplace now, not the exception to rule, which I think it should be. I graduated high school in 1985 and even back then, a girl in school who got pregnant got sent away "to live with her aunt for a little while". It was a shame to be pregnant and unmarried but it's a sign of the times.

I sometimes wish I could have grown up in the 50s instead of 70s. :-)
