I think we expect that kids won't like veggies, and ....

In Reply to: 10 kids all demanding different meals - SA

I think that generally, in this country we do a very bad job of cooking vegetables. And, I think that we just generally expect that kids don't like vegetables. I grew up eating a Mediterranean diet. My grandparents and most of my neighbors were Italian immigrants. We lived in a part of NJ where you could grow just about anything. We had lots of fresh vegetables, lots of fish, and my grandmother made all of her pasta by hand with a combination of white flour and semolina. I don't think any vegetable was cooked longer than a minute or two, and there were always piles of vegetables at every meal. It was just part of the diet.

I have a Korean foster son, and he enjoys things like smoked squid legs and seaweed. It's just the normal diet for his culture. Kids in other countries eat all sorts of things that Americans consider ghastly. So, really, I think it's more just our culture. Americans tend to give kids more bland, smooth foods for a longer time, and then later, the fast food, high-sugar, high-fat culture kicks in. It's just so bad for all of us. I remember thinking that roasted peppers were the best thing in the world, and I clearly remember eating them for lunch when I was too young to go to school. I don't think you'd find too many American parents who'd consider roasted peppers toddler food! LOL

That's my theory, anyway.

Do you expect...
that an adult who was never taught to shake it off as a child suddenly knows how to do it just because they've become "of age"? At what age do you suggest we teach people that suicide is their own responsibility instead of someone else's?
Did they say when we could expect this?
I could definitely use $1,800.
Well you know, it always happens when you least expect it but (sm)
But you have to at least be out there to ever meet anyone. If nothing else, there are men who like to have just email friends. There is a free dating site called plentyoffish you can go just check out. I have a newly divorced friend who has met some people to date on there. But there are always people who just want to talk also. Or maybe start out with a male walking buddy, something like that.
Forgot the veggies - sm
BirdsEye mixed veggies too. Scoop about 1/2 cup out of the package and pop in the microwave while the chicken is grilling.

I buy the big bag of mixed veggies and a bag of boneless chicken tenders. I grill up a bunch of the chicken, then cut it into bite size pieces when it has cooled. I use freezer containers (I think Rubbermade) and mix the veggies and chicken together, then fill the containers, pop it in the freezer for when I want a single serving, like for lunch. When I want to use them, I add about 1 tsp of water, put the lid back on loosely and zap it for about 1.5 minutes. Easy Peasy
Veggies and dip, slaw.

I have always grown veggies - sm
And this year it looks like doing so will really pay off!  I mean, for a few dollars I can get enough plants to cover my 100 sq feet of raised beds and really make a dent in the cost of produce, which we eat a lot of.  Happy gardening!
We can our veggies every year...sm

We go out to the countryside to U-Pick veggie fields.  Last year picked lots of tomatoes for 20 cents a pound.  Also picked or bought eggplant, peppers, pears, apples, peaches.  We canned the tomatoes and fruits; froze the peppers, and ate the eggplant (not sure how to preserve those yet).  We also freeze snap peas from the garden and some other stuff.  Whoa, I sound like a little country Cathy, don't I?    Anyway, hopefully this helps support the farms/farmers and keeps their land away from developers.  Off my soap box now.

root veggies
I have read that root vegetables like carrots, beets, etc., absorb the irrigation water & pesticides & this cannot be washed off, so this would be the place to spend the extra money on organic veggies. For other kinds of veggies, just keep in mind that the pesticides often are sprayed in an oily base, so plain water won't get rid of it. You have to use soap (doesn't take much) & then rinse really well. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing. Also I read an article in Sunset last month about how you can grow your own organic veggies in a very small space, only about 10 x 10 feet, & get quite a harvest out of it.
Why do people expect
You to do something for them, when they know there is no way in @#$% you can do it.

Why am I still here?
Sometimes it is necessary to explain what you expect
Sometimes it is necessary to explain what you expect. Maybe he will or cannot fulfill all your expectations. But maybe he'll learn and also, maybe, you will learn that all your expectation might not be fulfilled.

I'm sorry, but what do you expect the shelters to do? sm

I worked in an animal shelter for over two years.  We go a lot of feral cats in at the shelter.  If they were somewhat friendly, then yes we usually put them up for adoption under the title of "good barn cat."  If you can't get near them, then there really isn't anything to do BUT to put them down.  There is no use endangering the people at the shelters OR the other animals at the shelter with a cat that has been wild too long to tame.  JMHO, sorry if it irks you.

Believe me, I am a HUGE animal lover (hence the reason I worked at the shelter for so long).  I don't like to see any animal suffering, but sometimes it is necessary.

What do I expect the shelters to do?
I am not their boss so I can not say what I expect them to do, not up to me. I only do what I can do. I don’t know where you live but here the animals are not kept in so called shelter for 3 days, then put down. This place kills animals twice a week, mostly pits. I don’t take animals to shelters because here the outlook is very bleak for them. I do what I can helping out the furries. What the shelters do is not up to me. Where did you get the idea I expect the shelters to do anything??
I go along with the veggies and dip. Skip the crax
s
yes I like the peaches too but forget the veggies
you CAN add them to your kid's food for added vitamins. I might just start buying carrots and adding them to my kid's Chef Boyardee!
Shepherd's Pie with lots of veggies

It's very filling and you can do wonders with only 1 lb of ground beef if you make this. Add enough veggies to displace some of the meat, whatever you have on hand.

It only takes about 4 potatoes to make enough topping, too.

Just don't expect a luxurious room unless you are sm
willing to pay big bucks.  Most hotel rooms in New York City are small.  The assumption is that people don't spend much time in them, but are out and about.  Plan on at least about $200 per night.  Maybe a little less if you book far in advance.
You need to go back inhouse is you want or expect that. sm

Problem is, as you know, inhouse has now gone to a company.  "Deserve"' has nothing to do with anything out here.  If you think so, I invite you, form a union.

Until we have anything near to that. you sign a contract, or no contract, and you agree to cover certain hours, on certain days.  That is the way it is.

That is an extremely fair pay and I would expect
them to do a great job for that. I have had the same problem with them starting out good and then having to go behind them like you said. I would first start out clearly stating what you want done and that you expect a good job consistently, even 6 months down the line. That is what I've been telling everyone I've talked to is that I need a consistent job each time.
If you expect $60K to rain down from heaven think again

My Bible tells me that the Lord will provide (and has provided) for all of my needs, it does not say he will send money raining down for me whenever I get myself into excess debt.  Rest assured that the Lord will provide the faithful with all that they need and plenty of what they want.  It is your right to believe otherwise, but do not step on my Christian beliefs in the process.

Luke 12:28, "If then God so clothe the grass, which is today in the field, and tomorrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?"

Thanks both of you! I do expect to make some people mad (sm)

I cannot stop laughing! You mean you actually expect me to SM

keep the SAME PICTURE???  LOL!   At least if I endure this today I have a slight CHANCE of a better one!!

I live in PA. . . not sure of my options, but I'm headin' for the mirror right now to FIX STUFF!!!

"If you expect less than perfection, that is what you'll get?"
That is pathetic.

Someone should report you.

Sorry to say it, but life doesn't always turn out how we would expect.
My DH and I have been home together for over a year now. We both lost our jobs, and we're both working part-time at home now. Sometimes we drive each other nuts and need a break. Sometimes it feels like we're joined at the hip. We often finish each other's sentences. Other times we just stare at each other because we have nothing new to discuss. It's definitely brought us closer instead of driving us apart. We have a lot of common interests, and we're motivating each other to pursue new career fields. We do take the time to get out of the house once in a while.

More and more people are working from home now. The problem is that the home worker needs to not isolate him/herself. Sounds like your DH has done that. Doesn't he have any friends or hobbies? Any outside interests?
I would expect your choice to go tonight and the reason?
It seems to me that anytime a contestant in any way wants to refute what a judge, especially Simon, has to say they do not last that much longer. I thought performance last night sounded off tune several times. I expect Danny to continue on as he is a big favorite with the fans. Adam, don't care for him and the rocker chick, not at all.
This vegan agrees! Veggies and no animal products are the way to go! nm

I looked on Google and got totally carried away reading about the lovebirds. One thing, if your birds are hand-fed they will be much better pets, will allow you to handle them when they are grown. If you have no dogs or cats, you might even let them have a birdie playground on top of the cage, but that's for somebody who has really worked with the little guys since Day One of life. Have Fun!

Nope, no kids with him, all of our kids are 20 and over.

I would think that some of the $12,000 A YEAR he paid in support for over 9 years should have been enough to save some for college. He paid his dues so to speak, always paid the support on time, had insurance for them, etc. He told them straight up to pay for their own college. Is there something wrong with that?

ESL kids have a label =$$$. When the illiterate kids get a label slapped on them - they will get a
Most public schools do not teach children to read with intensive phonics. It has nothing to do with class size IMHO. The method of reading instruction is what determines if the kids will learn to read or not.

Consider homeschooling her.

Each child represents a $ amount to public school administration. As long as the child attends they get their $. They still get X amount of $ for each year they teach or do not teach a kid to read.
Their compensation is not reduced when they produce illiterate adults.
I believe my kids would still believe . .
had I not got totally busted by my 10-year-old son. My 7-year-old still believes. I always asked as my kids if they believe and when they said yes, I said that that is all that is important. My son caught me playing the EB last Easter. He said to me yesterday, "Come on, a giant bunny hopping around the country bringing easter baskets? How long did you expect me to fall for that?" I about split a gut laughing!!! However, both older children know how important it is to let the 7YO believe, we all watched Polar Express last night and they still were mesmerized!!!
I think a LOT of men are like that with kids
Maybe because since such a high % of marriages end in divorce, some of them keep a distance there. After all, when divorces happen, who gets the kids? Also, women tend to take charge when it comes to the kids and men tend to allow it. I truly believe that kids do not always strengthen a marriage but often the opposite. I have seen statistics stating that more couples with children get divorced than those who don't have any. Interesting, huh? JMO
That's why I won't have kids.
I have totally turned off the need/want to have kids, because I know my husband could never handle it.  I don't want to be a single parent...especially a married single parent, know what I mean?  It's an incredible commitment and they don't stay portable and nonverbal for long.
What do your kids

What do your kids call you and your spouse? Would you mind if they changed it, as in Mom instead of Mommy, as they got older? My kids call me Mom. If they call me Ma......I correct them, I don't LIKE it!! My son's GF calls me Mommy or Mom, I don't mind. My DIL calls me by my first name, I don't mind that either. I have a stepson, he also calls me Mom.

I do but only to keep an eye on my kids. NM

Hello......if you want your kids to know...
about STDs and how not to get pregnant, YOU teach them. Why should there have to be programs about that at all? If you want them to have condoms, you buy them, don't ask the school nurse to hand them out. As to the genius of a President...at least he is trying. The one before him was hardly an advertisement for wise choices where sex is concerned ala black dress and use of cigars in a way that NO one ever intended...and committed felony perjury while a sitting President. Oh, but, heck....who cares, right?? Geeeezzz. Gimme a break.
Hello, yourself. If I had kids, I would...sm
Teach them those things. And if you're questioning why there s/b sex ed programs in school at all, why do you seem to be defending the current abstinence-only ones? They're worse than nothing at all because they give inadequate and downright *false* information. How is not having all the facts (or having the wrong "facts") ever a good thing? Just doesn't make any sense to me. If you want Bush to get credit because "at least he's trying" well, that seems like a pretty low standard for the president of our country.

Now as far as Clinton, I never said I was a fan. You're assuming an awful lot there. I don't even want to get into that.
I was one of four kids (sm)
and I was always wishing that my twin sister and I could have parents of our own. Living with mean older siblings was no fun!
Once again, your kids are still not that old
but when my son married, completely absorbed into not only his wifes life (which I am the first to say she comes first) but also her family and I basically just lost a son. Just swallowed up by her side and you would not know he really had a mother anymore. Quit trying on that end some time ago.
Especially with little kids

When my daughter was 2 or 3, she got her hands on one of the poppies in the back seat and must have pulled it apart and put the plastic middle up her nose. We didn't know in the beginning what was there, but after a visit to her pediatrician who couldn't get at it, a trip to the emergency room, a 5 hour wait for an ENT guy with the correct equipment to retrieve it, we discovered it was the middle of the poppy. Since then, whenever I see them selling the poppies, I tell them to warn parents with little kids to keep the poppies away from the kids.
