I can totally see my husband doing something like that, because he likes to feel important.  All men do.  He got to be a hero.  I don't think he should have given such an extravagant gift without consulting you though.  Obviously there is nothing going on or she would not have sent a thank you card! 

Tell him that it is not appropriate for him to have long conversations with her about her love life.  That opens the door to an emotional attachment to someone of the opposite sex and he shouldn't go down that road.  Of course maybe she just thinks of him as a father figure.  Still, it's not appropriate.
