They are made from whole foods rather than synthetic vitamins and guarantee a burst of energy. If I don't take them a few days, I can really tell a difference. I love them.

Last year I started taking the Olay Vitamins that have 4 pills per day packaged neatly for each day. I put it in my makeup purse and whenever I eat lunch I take them. I have seen a huge difference. Took about a week or so to notice difference. I used to take just a multivitamin and was still feeling run down. Feel great now with these vitamins. I swear by them and recommend them to everyone. Wal-mart sells them for $9.99 a box for a 30-day supply. See link for more info at Walgreens, although they are higher there. http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100146&navAction=jump&navCount=0&skuid=sku400112&id=prod400111

I would have him checked for vitamin deficiencies, or if he refused, start giving him a multivitamin, bare minimum.
Definitely try the vitamins

If you don't already take one, you might just try a good multivitamin rather than a B complex.  I hated the B complex.  Stinky is right.  Plus it looked like I had eaten a canary when I peed.  Okay, that was TMI.  Sorry.

Definitely get the thyroid checked out.  Low thyroid can give you lots of symptoms that can mimic menopause and depression is one of them.  If your hair is thinning a little bit and your skin feels like it's drier than it used to be, those can all be symptoms of a low thyroid.

I was on Effexor for a while and hated it.  I didn't feel any less depressed, but I didn't care because I was asleep all the time.  I basically slept through December.  Which actually worked well in the grand scheme of things, but was not very productive.

Back to the thyroid, though.  That may very well be an underlying cause for your depression.  Probably not the only one, but it could be contributing.  Some things to think about -   What are your eating habits like and have they changed drastically in the last year with all the stress?   If you eat lots of prepared foods, that definitely is affecting things.  Try getting rid of anything white in your diet - white bread, flour, potatoes, etc.  It's hard, but you'll be AMAZED at how different you feel.    I actually went one step further and try to eat a raw diet as much as possible.  This is new for me, but it's astonishing at how much better I feel.

Exercise is also a very important key in helping to combat depression.   Sunlight is another very important key.  Even if it's only to walk down to the end of the street, try to do that once a day.  You need to get the Vitamin D from the sunlight and the fresh air will help.

If you think a low thyroid may be a factor, here are a couple of things I discovered.  Iodine is a very important nutrient in thyroid health.  The only way you can get iodine is if you eat fish or use iodized salt.  I don't do either.  I started taking a kelp supplement for the iodine.  If you use artificial sweeteners at all, they can lodge in the thyroid and hamper its effectiveness.  Fluoride in water is another biggie.  Fluoride mimics estrogen and also inhibits thyroid function.  A Brita water filter, or any similar one DOES NOT remove fluoride.  You have to get a separate fluoride filter for that.  I take kelp, stay away from diet sodas (I used to drink diet Pepsi by the gallon, practically) and have the fluoride filter on the sink.  I then put that water through the Brita filter.  I also take another herbal supplement called Ashwaganda that helps promote thyroid health.

I have been taking the vitamins and supplements really consistently for the past couple of weeks, and I feel better now than when I was on levothyroxine and Effexor combined.

Good luck.  I hope you find a regimen that works for you.

Does anyone know of a good place to look up vitamins for spelling and dosage.  Thank you

My son goes to a gifted and talented camp in the summer and at the beginning of the camp the nurse checks in all of the medications. The line is massive. All of these kids are not on prescription medications, they all take vitamin supplements.

My son takes multivitamin (teen formula at that age, with extra magnesium with ZINC- that is important) the magnesium and zinc combo cured the symptoms.

My daughter is too young to take a bunch of supplements, but I can control what she eats more than the older kids, so I feed her the magnesium in the form of peanut butter every day or oatmeal, beans, etc.

what kind of vitamins do you take? sm

i had been bying vitamins from wal-mart.  then i went to GNC and talk the gal that works there and she recommended GNC brand ultra gold which i do take when i think about it.  but their vitamins are so big, they almost gag me, even the smell gags me.  supposed to take two a day.  they are loaded with stuff.  just wondered what ya'll take.

ps:  can't tell a difference in my energy level when i take GNC vitamins.

Vitamins question

I'm looking for a good multivitamin.  I'm in my late 40's and I also take extra calcium with D but I'm wondering if the generic vitamins are just as good as the expensive ones?

He's a dachshund (sp?) I did hear about some dog vitamins (sm)
on a radio commercial recently that said it was supposed to help, called Dinovites or something like that. Anyone every tried vitamins for a stinky dog?
Prenatal vitamins are the best for any woman. nm

I can't stand those stinky B vitamins

but I guess I should start taking them and see if that is helpful.  I'll just hold my nose. Yuck!

Thanks for the suggestion.

I know it's their nature
That's why I posed: What kind of a plan is that?

The older I get, the freakier it all seems!
Nah, just a big fan of the nature shows.
I forgot manatees. I shoulda said mermaids. :o>

Human nature...sm
How many people make New Years resolutions (pledges)?  How many break them during the year?  Teens are fighting hormones, peer pressure, constant exposure in TV shows/movies, etc.  With few exceptions, I think pledges are meaningless unless the person making them is determined to carry them out.  I agree with another poster about the father-daughter pledge events.  I think it is a bit creepy.
Thank you Nature and Anna
It's nice that others can sympathize with me. I just don't know what it is. One time years and years ago I told him I was feeling depressed and wanted to talk with a counselor. Boy did we have a blow out. He told me I should be able to talk to him about anything and I told him I can't. I told him he judges me and no matter what I feel or think he comes back with "you need to look at things the way I do". He's done that ever since we got married. When I wanted children and he didn't I was supposed to look at things the way he did. When I wanted to see my family but he didn't want me to travel because flying was not safe I was suppose to look at things the way he does. Once I told him you need to look at this the way I do and he said to me "no, because your wrong". I've heard how wrong I am for 25 years now that I just keep my feelings and opinions to myself. Once I accidentally broke a leaf off of one of his plants and he yelled at me for about 2 or 3 hours and I felt like a child with him saying "do you have anything to say for yourself". Then I got the same lecture for 2 hours my dad would give me growing up, and him saying I need to look at this the way he does (me destroying his plants and how would I feel if he destroyed something of mine). Oh hears a good one that will give you a laugh.... we were talking about how bad the crime is where we live. I told him that they should allow citizens from each section of the town pull a neighborhood watch and drive around and have the authority to arrest individuals committing crimes. He looked at me like I was nuts and said 'how, how, how do you think they would do that, they don't have enough money, etc, etc. Then he told me the way to solve it would be to evacuate everyone out of the city, shut down all the roads and make the town a ghost town (mind you this is a town of over 50K people with businesses, restaurants, and stores throught). HA HA...I felt like saying...gee your right honey, I should look at things the way you do.

I guess the weirdest thing though is that I've never had dreams with my my DH in my dreams. Maybe in the beginning I had a dream or two, but that was maybe 20 years ago. Also I know a lot of people can see themselves older and with their spouses, but I have never ever pictured us old together. I don't know what it is but it's like when I look into my future I can see myself with gray hair and being with my family and friends, but he's just not there.

Sometimes I read people's messages and am a little envious and would like to be in a relationship like some are, but I cannot imagine what that would be like. But on the otherhand, I am a very independent person, very sure of myself, and the thought of being alone does not bother me at all. I always think that being alone does not necessarily mean being lonely.

Anyway...just wanted to say thanks for your kind words.
I use One Source, ..
whether they are any better or not, I really don't know, but when I think to take them, I can tell a difference, I just haven't been taking them faithfully..

They are the only ones that don't make me feel nauseated.  I think you are supposed to take 2 a day, but I usually only take 1.  Generic vitamins have always made me feel lightheaded and nauseated.
Question about taking vitamins with allergy medication
This may sound like a stupid question, but I've never taken allergy medication and now I've got bad allergies. Just took a vitamin C about 10 minutes ago. Is it safe to take an allergy pill (Clariton I think it is) so soon after taking a vitamin, or does it even matter. Again, sorry if that sounds stupid, just not used to taking either and my head/eyes feel like they are going to explode and I'm sneezing and coughing and runny nose, and just feel icky all over but have got to work.
Birds and Mother Nature sm
The birds tell us a lot. The morning of the Great Blizzard of ྊ I could not hear myself think for the noise of the birds everywhere. I live in the NE, I had a feeling they were trying to tell us something. I packed up everything I had that day and left for home and stocked up. I was not able to get out for the whole next week and my husband could not get home. I was fully prepared, but did not know for what. They do warn us! Lots of acorns here this year as well which means it is supposed to be a bad winter. The same thing happened in 1978 with the acorns. We shall see!!
We ALL mess with mother nature

Who among us has not colored their hair, seen a plastic surgeon because we weren't satisfied with our bodies, took a pill to alter our mood or help a physical condition that made us uncomfortable?  Who has not dieted, worn colored contact lenses, got a perm, had liposuction?  Who didn't get their ears pierced, or love someone who has a body piercing or a tattoo?  Even if you never did any of these things, did it make you "sick" whenever someone else did?

Why is it MY business what someone else does with their body?  Oh, that's right, it isn't.  If I don't like your decision to become a blonde, should it make me "sick"?  Should I sneer at you and throw rocks because I personally don't like it that you got breast implants?  Well, that's what people do to people that change their sex.  What gives them the right?

Nature shows on PBS make me cry.

It was something that just happened to you. You choosing feels unnatural because it is, and it won't ever feel natural. BUT no one cares if you have a baby or not if you really want to keep your freedom. Babies are a lot of work.

I would not have confronted him and would consider the source as others said. sm
There are so many people out there that know of issues in marriages and keep quiet or to themselves about it. I think it takes a very good friend to tell someone of issues they know or saw. So I would either say this person is a very good friend or this person has a reason to stir up trouble; again, consider the source. I would have kept quiet with the hubby and looked for evidence and investigate before I disregarded it or confronted him.

I know its human nature to discuss things such as

there is a 21-year-old college student missing from my home town.  She has not been seen since Friday.  Her name is Leah Hickman.  Her sister and the police were on Fox News last night - Greta (not sure of her last name) interviewed them.  Please keep Leah and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

I agree. It is in some people's nature to use those words.
My supervisors at work call me sweetie because they are southern and that is how they speak. Does the teacher treat everyone like that and it is just not part of your speaking style, or is there something else that seems inappropriate about it?

Loved all the nature stories! Good stuff.
I enjoy my bird friends. Great entertainment value. Put out a sprinkler and watch the robins, cardinals some sort of little sparrow-like birds show up. They love a refreshing shower.
Disagree-it is NOT human nature. My husband thinks that too (sm)
My husband covered his fishing pole in the back of his truck one day because he said some "average Joe might walk by and take it" because it was just too tempting with it showing. Average Joe wouldn't rummage through the truck and take it - that would just make him a thief, but if Average Joe saw a fishing pole there in plain sight, he might take it. That is wrong to say that you cannot expect someone to come into your home and work for ou and not take anything, that it is human nature. It is NOT human nature. It is stealing and it is wrong. I am not perfect by any means but if I was working as a housekeeper I would not take anything that was not mine.
So were they stolen by a thief? Lol or just a person with human nature? (sm)
I probably would have just warned the cleaning person that some things had been missing and if she happened to put something in a new place to let me know because were having some things we could not find. If it continued I would find someone else.
Walnuts- natural source of melatonin
Want a better night's sleep? Try sprinkling your dinner's tossed green salad, fruit salad or steamed vegetables with a handful of walnuts. Or enjoy a baked apple or poached pear topped with walnuts for dessert.

Melatonin, a hormone produced by the pineal gland, which is involved in inducing and regulating sleep and is also a powerful antioxidant, has been discovered in walnuts in bio-available form, making them the perfect evening food for a natural good night's sleep.

Melatonin has been shown to help improve sleep for night shift workers and people suffering from jet lag, but maintaining healthy levels of this hormone is important for everyone over the age of 40 since the amount of melatonin produced by the human body decreases significantly as we age, and this decrease in antioxidant protection may be related to the development of free radical-related diseases later in life.

In a study published in Nutrition, Russell Reiter and colleagues at the University of Texas have not only quantified the amount of melatonin present in walnuts-between 2.5 and 4.5 ng/gram-but have demonstrated that eating walnuts triples blood levels of melatonin and also increases antioxidant activity in the bloodstream in animals.

The authors theorize that by helping the body resist oxidative stress (free radical damage), walnuts may help reduce the risk of cancer and delay or reduce the severity of cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease. Walnuts, best known as a heart-healthy nut, are also a rich source of another highly cardio-protective nutrient: omega-3-fatty acids, so Reiter and his team will next investigate possible synergy between walnuts' omega-3 fats and melatonin. To us at the World's Healthiest Foods, this sounds familiar theme in Nature's symphony in which whole, wholesome foods each provide a wealth of nutrients whose harmony promotes our optimal health.

I was horrified, what - a year ago? - to watch an episode of Oprah where three teenage girls AND THEIR MOTHERS were guests saying in front of God and the world that the girls engage in oral sex, how common it was, etc.

There was some point in this country when we decided that "shame" was bad (the oxymoronic suggestion being that we should be ashamed of shame!) - and nothing good has come out of this ridiculous 'progressive humanist' idea or its twin - the notion that outcomes should be the same for everyone regardless of their ability or effort.

Let's get the notion of shame back on stage - front and center. There ARE things that humans do that SHOULD make them feel shame and guilt. When we lose our ability to experience guilt, we have...let's see now, what do we have again? Oh yes, now I remember - we have Bernie Madoff and his $50 billion scam, television you can no longer watch with your children, teachers seducing their students, and a whole lot of other very unpleasant consequences.
This is a minor source of contention in my family - sm
My husband and 17 year old daughter love going out to eat, whenever and wherever. I find that most restaurant food is way too gussied up for my tastes and I prefer my own cooking to anyone else's. Not to say that they DON'T like it. I'm a good cook and so is my daugher. To me, I can think of so many better ways to spend the money of a dinner out, one evening of which equals usally about half of our food budget for the week. It's hard to justify that kind of expense just to get out of doing the dishs.

So, in answer to your question, about once every couple of weeks to fast food, once a month or so to Friendly's and only on special occasions to a real nice restaurant.

plant protein and fiber. Great option for vegetarian.

This is a great beanice dish:

rice
beans (any kind)
onions (chopped small)
olives
turmeric
spices

Fry a little in olive oil or canola oil, then cook in water, 1:2, or 1:1/2, depending on kind of rice.

You can substitute beans with lentils or chickpeas, or put all 3 together....

I had heard Vitamin D was a good source for bones,
of course and being as I along with others on here do not get out as much as we should sometimes, had heard maybe I should take. I have pain in my ribs (checked for other things and scans, x-rays turned out ok) so started this morning with 4000 units. Anyone else take and if so what dosage? My ribs were hurting before I got out of bed and since seem to be feeling some better.
