The Jersey Devil!

Posted By: Jersey Girl on 2007-06-04
In Reply to: what 'stories' were you told as a child that you - believed?

I grew up in South Jersey, and I was told about the Jersey Devil. It's a local legend, and it's a long tale. But if you Google "Jersey Devil" you'll see that this story has some oomph to it! I believed it as a child, and I think I still believe it! In any case, I still get the willies when I'm camping in the Pine Barrens at night!

Jen is the DEVIL. sm
I never saw anyone so totally self-absorbed in my entire life. I'm sad to see Joe & Diick (2 of my favorite people on this year's show) up for eviction this week, but STILL, I sure am looking forward to watching whoever of them remains totally kick Jen's red-Lycra-clad gluteus maximus.

PS! What the __???? I had to purposely misspell D's name above, 'cuz the software kept telling me this was a *bad word*! LOL
Just to play devil's advocate...
there are many women who LIKE to play the victim, poor me, I sacrifice all the time role. IMHO, this is a lot of psychobabble designed by women to further their status as the downtrodden gender. No one can MAKE you not take care of yourself first; you choose to do that to yourself. It doesn't take a genius (or Oprah) to figure out that if you do for others all the time and are not taking the time to take care of yourself that you are eventually going to wear thin and fall apart. Too many women on anti-whatever drugs (anxiety, depression) who can't figure out how to go through day to day existence without mother's little helper pill. It only stands to reason that if you try to be perfect you will fail; something will be neglected in the long run. Deal with it, do the best you can and don't be a doormat. If you fill your face with junk all the time and are fat and don't exercise, that is nobody's fault but your own. If you try to do it all and don't ask for help, that too is your own fault. Women today have it much easier than other generations did. My mother-in-lawr raised 4 boys, worked on the family dairy farm, cooked 3 meals a day and cleaned every day and never thought twice about it. We are spoiled compared to that!
Perhaps I'm playing devil's advocate or maybe I need a
But, I just don't get it.

If things are this dire and it sounds as if what you have posted about him is true, it sounds like you need to spend EVERY POSSIBLE MOMENT getting out of this situation to protect yourself but, most importantly, to protect your children.

What I don't understand is, if time is of the essence and you're taking all of these steps to extricate yourself and your children from this situation...

Why are you wasting precious time soliciting the opinions of virtual STRANGER on an internet forum, and wasting hours arguing with posters?

I dunno...I've never been in an abusive situation, but it seems to me soliciting advice and sympathy from strangers on the internet would be the LAST thing on my mind.

Best of luck to you. It's 2008. If you really want to get out of that situation, and get your children out of it, you can and will.

I agree! Read Devil Wears Prada
before it became a hit movie. Glad I'm not the only one who likes that kind of stuff. :)
I live in New Jersey
About 25 miles from NYC. Can you fly into Newark? it would be easier to get to Jersey City from there. Where in Long Island are you flying to? A lot of transportation around but not sure where in Long Island you are flying to. JFK and LaGuardia are the only other major airports I know about.
New Jersey Shore
Anybody out there from the Jersey Shore......SOUTH?
RE: Wildwood, New Jersey

Our family and our friends and their family are going to Wildwood this summer.  A neighbor told us to stay in Wildwood Crest, but I noticed that staying in plain old Wildwood is a whole lot cheaper.  For those of you who have gone or live in New Jersey, is there really such a big difference between Wildwood and Wildwood Crest.  There will be nine of us and I'm trying to find a rental for the week.  Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Can only remember 1 thing - we would go to the Jersey - sm
shore every summer for vacation since I was a baby; and for years my brothers and parents would tell me that Egg Harbor (we went over it on a bridge) had eggs floating in it, hence the name. Every time we'd cross the bridge I'd be looking for eggs. I believed that for a while (probably 9 or 10), took me a while to figure out they were pulling my leg. They never told us any weird things though; and I don't do it with my kids though my DH does sometimes to my chagrin.
Formerly from Jersey, up there called it stuffing, down here they say dressing - HUH?

Philly/South Jersey accent
I have a Philly accent, though not as pronounced as some. I definitely say "wooder" for "water". But I don't have that over-long "Oh" sound that you hear around Philly. I do say certain phrases that are Philly-distinct. Like, "I'm gone downa shore," which means that I plan on going to the New Jersey seaside. And we tend to say "yiz" for the plural "you", using it the same way as southerners say y'all and New Yorkers say yooze.

Oh! And I do shout out, "Yo!" when I want to get someone's attention.
Anyone live in NY City, Long Island, New Jersey area?

I have a question.  If I fly to Long Island/Islip (Southwest) but really want to get to Jersey City, is there an airport shuttle or bus or something that I could take to Jersey City?  And do you have any idea how much that would cost?  I am not even sure where in Jersey City I need to get, probably a train station.  Local train, not Amtrak, not sure what they call it there, maybe "path" or something like that.

A ballpark idea would be helpful, especially since I am not even sure where I need to get in JC.

TIA!
