UNC Student Killed, now WBC protestors plan to picket

Posted By: during Memorial Service on 2008-03-15

I live in NC and the news of the murdered student body president (out of respect will not list her name here) has upset all of us in this area, of all religions and non-religious as well.  The WBC is a radical group calling themselves "Christians" who plan to protest at UNC during the memorial service for this beloved young woman.  The group is listed as a "hate group" but call themselves Christians and wear shirts and bear signs saying "God hates you" and God hates colleges, etc.  Their website proclaims "thank God another college student is dead."  This is so horrible and unspeakable.  For those who are not Christian, please do not believe for one moment that this represents common Christian viewpoints.  It definitely does not. The vast majority of Christians are horrified at what these people believe and proclaim.

It really is infuriating to me too! Yes, they also picket soldiers' funerals (sm)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church_(Topeka)
They protest many funerals and memorial services of innocent people. It just makes me so sick.
I know about the war protestors, but I thought the gay
thing was something entirely different. I cannot see protesting anyone who has died, irregardless of how, why, when, whatever. I am glad some one is there for a barrier for the families.
I think protestors have every right to protest,
I would if not up in age but having said that, absolutely do not believe it should be at any funerals. These are hard times for any family members or friends. There is a time and place for anything and a funeral setting is just not it.
Do you mean the horrible protestors? Call your...
local Harley Davidson shop, and they will assemble a team to keep those worthless parasites under control!!
good student?! you pay $500 and she

it's not like they have these kinds of field trips often.......and she is in drama and it's to participate in seeing Broadway plays.  I am sure they are getting a good hotel rate as a group, sharing rooms, etc., and perhaps some meals are included in that alone.

It's expensive in The Big Apple and rather she go with too much than not enough.  Since she is such a good student and this is school related and not really extra-curriculum activity, I think it would be the parent's responsibility to come up with the bulk and have her work part-time or save her holiday $$ upcoming for the trip in the Spring.

She could do extra chores in and around the home now, couldn't she, to earn more $$?

jes sayin.....and no I don't think you're cheap and I'm certainly not rich.....but this isn't Disney trip, it's Broadway shows and she is in drama.....

Are you really a nursing student?
Public health 101 - THEY ARE CONTAGIOUS!!!!! No, they are not an infectious disease, but all you have to do is stand next to a child with lice, brush up against them, brush up against their jacket, use the same computer headphones, etc., and instantly they have made you head a home now!

Obviously you have never had a child with this, or you would understand how frustrating it is. We bagged all the stuffed animals, steam cleaned mattresses, pillows, furniture, washed EVERYTHING in the house, etc., did all the treatment on my daughter's hair, and we got rid of them. I don't think you understand how much work this is, but we did it willingly to get rid of these pests. However, two weeks later my daughter came home with them AGAIN, because that same child's parents simply washed her hair in NIX, did not pick out the nits, and did not treat anything else in their house. This child was infested with lice, and she was allowed to be in school. The school nurse said there was nothing they could do about it as far as letting parents know because of privacy issues.

Out of 24 kids in her class, 16 of them got lice. The only ones who did not were the boys, because most of them had buzz cuts.

I don't think the OP was critizing or ridiculing the little girl, just stating how frustrated she is at the school system for allowing this to happen. She does not need to be in school where she can spread these to everyone she comes in contact with. I don't think the OP is being a pain in their butts, and I sincerely doubt that a family who is not willing to take care of a problem their child has is going to welcome outside help!

I really hope that you never have to experience this, because it is horrible. Just imagine your child knows (and can feel) that there are hundreds and hundreds of bugs crawling around on their head, making them itch like crazy!! My daughter begged me to make them go away, she could feel them crawling constantly, and it angers me that she should have to be subject to this repeatedly because someone is too lazy to EFFECTIVELY treat their child.

Enough said!
fairly new student
Hello all! I am a fairly new student of MT.I am going through M-TEC. Anyone else going through the same school??? I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions to help me out in my journey. I am sure that there are many of you out there who have some good suggestions on MT studying, finding words, answers to questions and so on. Thanks in advance!
look on the New MT/Student board
nm
Or the PMSing student who saw another
girl look at her boyfriend. I do not thing this is a good idea at all.
Being a student is completely different than being a teacher.
io
But what about that bipolar student who might get ticked off
Seems to me odds are someone will get hurt if everyone carries guns, statistically speaking. Even an accident could happen, or the gun could be placed in the hands of someone who might just do more harm than good. Just IMHO.

I depends on the person/student. Not everyone is cut out for college.
And it would sure help if the local school systems would actually TEACH things like English grammar, etc. Isn't that more important than reading Hemingway?
18 college student-opinion about summer partying

I have an 18.5 year old who goes out of state to college.  So what ever partying goes on I don't know about it so I don't worry about it.  I cannot have control over something I don't see. She knows how I feel about underage drinking.

So my DD wants to to a fraternity party tonight, will be home around 1:30 a.m, has to be at work at 9 a.m.  She is trying to tell us it is not a drinking fraternity.  We were not born yesterday.   The people she would go with are not 21 and she has told us in the past they drink and tell their parents they are at a friends house at a sleep over.  (my daughter tends to reveal too much information that she cannot retract later) I am totally against this knowing up front that there will be drinking and reading too many horror stories. In my state if anyone under 21 is caught drinking they loose their license and so do parents if they supply the house and booze.

My husband is telling me she is an adult and I feel we can say no since we know all of this upfront.  What would you do in this  situation.

Thanks

they picketed at the Auburn University student's death here in AL
and people wonder why i'm athiest.
I agree, no teacher should call a student 'retard', t
and try to convince his peers to drop this name calling.
It's not funny and if it goes on for a long time, it's labeling.
I had a fellow nursing student way back with a Jamaican patois who
s
it just about killed me ;)
actually I just ran out of $. Keep it up - it is a fantastic way to exercise. Be careful not to let the instructor/yoursel push you too hard.
Ohio Christian school tells student to skip prom

FINDLAY, Ohio – A student at a fundamentalist Baptist school that forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing will be suspended if he takes his girlfriend to her public high school prom, his principal said.

Despite the warning, 17-year-old Tyler Frost, who has never been to a dance before, said he plans to attend Findlay High School's prom Saturday.

Frost, a senior at Heritage Christian School in northwest Ohio, agreed to the school's rules when he signed a statement of cooperation at the beginning of the year, principal Tim England said.

The teen, who is scheduled to receive his diploma May 24, would be suspended from classes and receive an "incomplete" on remaining assignments, England said. Frost also would not be permitted to attend graduation but would get a diploma once he completes final exams. If Frost is involved with alcohol or sex at the prom, he will be expelled, England said.

Frost's stepfather Stephan Johnson said the school's rules should not apply outside the classroom.

"He deserves to wear that cap and gown," Johnson said.

Frost said he thought he had handled the situation properly. Findlay requires students from other schools attending the prom to get a signature from their principal, which Frost did.

"I expected a short lecture about making the right decisions and not doing something stupid," Frost said. "I thought I would get his signature and that would be the end."

England acknowledged signing the form but warned Frost there would be consequences if he attended the dance. England then took the issue to a school committee made up of church members, who decided to threaten Frost with suspension.

"In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other," England said.

The handbook for the 84-student Christian school says rock music "is part of the counterculture which seeks to implant seeds of rebellion in young people's hearts and minds."

England said Frost's family should not be surprised by the school's position.

"For the parents to claim any injustice regarding this issue is at best forgetful and at worst disingenuous," he said. "It is our hope that the student and his parents will abide by the policies they have already agreed to."

The principal at Findlay High School, whose graduates include Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, said he respects, but does not agree with, Heritage Christian School's view of prom.

"I don't see (dancing and rock music) as immoral acts," Craig Kupferberg said.

I almost killed my cat with tunafish!

Go figure that one out!  He was a Maine Coon cat...just HUGE with a huge appetite and I ran out of food, so I grabbed a can of tuna until I could get to the store.  That night I woke up to SCREAMING like I have never heard an animal scream before and his whole body was spasming.  Oh it was the most horrible thing I had ever witnessed!  I called an emergency vet clinic who took him in right away.  He had a complete blockage of his urethra and couldn't pee...he was a heartbeat away from blowing his bladder and dying.  They had to catheterize him and the bag was full of bloody urine and he spent 3 days in the hospital.  I was a wreck but he was ultimately fine.  Holy crap did that vet bill nearly cripple me!  ICU for a cat...why oh why do I keep on with these friggin' animals?!

You never know what will cause something to go wrong with these things.  Never blame yourself...ever.  We are all doing the best we can with what we have.

I once had a dream that my dog got killed - sm
and a week later to the day, she did. And it happened exactly like in my dream.
not the ones who end up being killed or prostitutes - sm
no, they don't always come back, there would be no missing persons if that was the case.
Yes, she most definitely killed her...I have no doubts...
nm
If her dogs killed my cats
I would probably just tar and feather her, that seems like a good remedy for me.
Yesterday's headlines killed me.
"Dr. Melfi quits treating Tony Soprano to start treating Paris Hilton!"

Too funny.

She said on The View that "Paris called and needed me so I had to make all my time available for Paris and her family!"

How not to get killed?!?!?! How about leave the idi0t!!!
I am very independent and I don't care if I have to go get a one bedroom apartment so my two small kids and I can have a place to go. I would not live in fear of my life over anything! I would figure it all out once I got a restraining order and filed a divorce! Wow, I could say a lot, but I am going to keep my comments to myself. That is what I would do. You asked for advice, there you have it!
My youngest step son was killed ........ sm
in a motorcycle accident and was almost decapitated. The mortician did a very good job with him, but there was still some evidence of the trauma he suffered. His mother chose to have an open casket because I doubt she could have dealt with it any other way. It was a very hard funeral, and hard for me as I had not seen him in quite some time and it was hard seeing him lying in a casket, but I think, hard as it was, it did help bring closure for me and for his family. I think it is a very personal decision that only the family can make at a time like this.
Kinda like asking if OJ killed Nicole or not NM
x
Or they want to raise them so they can be killed in a senseless war!!
Not that I think it is good to kill fetuses either ... but why don't these people see their lack of logic!

And as far as the stem cells and embryos ... why don't they fight to stop allowing people to fertilize and freeze them to begin with (or more than they will surely use)?!!
I read about a 6yo that killed his classmate
I know this doesn't pertain to you because some kid killed his father after he saw his father committing violence, but I just thought this was interesting article. It's called Why little kids kill. I just cannot fatham anyone at 6 years old doing that. What happened to young innocense....

If I were you and the family seems non-challant I would definitely talk to a police officer and state your concerns. Especially in today's day and age - nothing surprises me.

nah -- we killed too many brain cells

snorting the crack OUR parents didn't teach us about!

Geesh -- why always so quick to blame the parents?  This kid is 14 years old and knew better than to do this.  She chose to do it anyway, just like so many others before her time chose to get up knocked up, strung out on drugs, become an alcoholic, etc.

Yes, the kid screwed up, but that's what kids do.  Didn't you ever have a friend who stole a car in high school or got caught cheating and ended up expelled?  It's not the end of the world, but spreading it all over the media could very well push this kid over the edge and cause her to hurt herself.  She obviously is looking for attention or affection.  This is certainly not going to help her.

Her name was Meredith Emerson, and it was just last January that she was killed.
I know the story very well, and even hiked in memory of her a few weeks after she was killed. Her murder caused great grief along the entire 2100+ miles of the trail, and all of us who love the trail know full well what can happen out there.

The trail community is very difficult to explain to people who haven't experienced it. Yes, people have been killed on the Appalachian Trail, probably about a dozen or so in the over 70 years that the trail has been open. Given the thousands who walk all or part of the trail each year, it is statistically safer on the trail than in "civilization". You are correct, however, that hikers are more in danger than the people who pick them up. The most dangerous places on the trail are at the trailheads and near roads where people pretend to help hikers and then do harm. That is why I pick up hikers, because they are more afraid of me than I am of them. Also, there's quite a bit of communication that goes up and down the trail, and we do keep track of people as they travel. It's very likely that when I pick someone up near the trail, I've heard about their trip. In hiker slang, people who help hikers are called trail angels. It's a different situation. It's not 100% safe, but I choose not to cower at home. I hike the A.T. and other trails, usually with friends, sometimes alone. I tell my family, that if harm should come to me, either through accident or evil, they should remember that I go into the woods because I love it, and should I die there, they should remember that I loved it too much to stay away.

The Appalachian Trail is not the lawless, dangerous passageway that so many people think it is. More times than I can count, I've been asked about the dangers of the trail. Usually I just shrug and smile. It's not worth the argument, because I can't change the minds of people who don't know. On the other hand, I don't want to change minds. If I did, there'd be traffic jams on the trail, and it wouldn't be fun anymore.
Women with restraining orders are killed by their abuser
Don't get a false sense of security. There have been good advances in the past 20 years but it's still a man's world.

Stay in contact with your friends and family and make sure to give a few of them a code word. Something like the sky is blue or I really want chinese food and they will know to call the police if you are in trouble. Do what you need to do to protect yourself. Do not count on the police. I was attacked in my home 2 hours after leaving the courthouse. I even called 911 when I got home because I was scared. They were on their way but he got there faster.
I was young and nieve and had a newborn I was thinking about. I wish someone would have told me not to go home. Please don't be nieve like I was and trust the system and that piece of paper. It's hard to imagine your home isn't safe or that someone is going to be 100x more aggressive then you have ever seen them be.
I would move and change your numbers and make sure if you work outside your home you alert EVERYONE including the receptionist and your boss/manager and security.
If she doesn't care about the fact that her dog killed your 2 cats
I don't understand why you are so afraid of offending her??!!! I don't know how much time has passed, but I would have been rip roaring FURIOUS at her, SIL or not, that she allowed her dog to do that not once but twice. She sounds pretty self-centered and uncaring to me.
you got mighty lucky because boric acid is poisonous and could have killed them

Just read where a 42-year-old woman was mauled and killed by her own 2 pit bulls sm

in FL near Jacksonville. Then the dogs turned on her son  who was also bit in the throat but luckily will survive.  Then the dogs turned on the sherrif's dept before they were both shot and killed. THANK GOD. I hate these dogs. I'm sorry. When my brother was walking home from fishing years ago pits attacked him and he's never been the same. Thankfully he survived.  When you go to the FL news website you see tons of pit bull owners sticking up for this breed and saying how they are great dogs. if they are so great why are they banned in multiple counties across the nation? No other type of dog is banned? Neighbors, cousins all say that she was a very loving owner who even slept with the dogs. No neglect, nothing. There were people saying that they leave their pits alone with their young children, as young as 3 years old! How ignorant can you be?

Tons of FL residents are calling of the extinction of this breed and I think that's a great idea.  You cannot trust a pit bull PERIOD.  There is something in their brains that can TICK at any time - this was quoted by a vet who specializes in dog care.  So tell me, why do people take chances with this kind of dog? I'm so angry right now!!!!!!

Obviously you've never had a family member killed by a drunk driver.
Long ago? Time has nothing to do with it. The man has an alcohol problem and left the scene of a homicide. Sounds like you're ok with that. I'm not. It speaks volumes about his character.
I disagree. Women have gotten killed by not moving or changing their phone numbers.

Young lady killed here in Georgia, Appalachian trail hiker
and she was enjoying going out about 2 years ago, killed on a mountain here by man posing as hiker. She was a young, vibrant lady in her 20s, he was in his 60s. I think I am getting this right when I say he used her police baton she carried for protection, wrestled it away from her and killed her with it. Is not the trail you hike on known for lot of crimes? This murder happened on that same trail where you give rides to strangers. This man was well known to other hikers there as he hung out on the trail lots of times.
Def. Plan B

Gets my vote, esp. presuming that you explained why you were taking that path.

Putting the paper on disk and printing at school was not an unreasonable option, as is telling her to call a neighbor or classmate who lives nearby to see if they have any paper to spare (I would accompany her no more than 3 blocks to pick up paper).

Or, you could also have suggested that she gather up her "nonessential" print jobs and print her paper out on the blank sides of those sheets.

Either way, she needs to deal with the embarrassement and/or reduced grade.

I plan
on doing something. I have printed out his picture and information. I intend to take that into the school and give it to the principal; letting him know I believe they should periodically check this website out and inform their teachers/employees of risks. I may even call the superintendent and voice my concerns with him too.
We have Plan A and Plan B

We had a new house built last year on a nice lakeside lot. We are about 15 years from retirement.

Plan A: We sell the house and retire to New Mexico.

Plan B: We stay here after retirement.

We are both investing in IRAs, 401Ks, etc., and we consider the house a retirement investment as well. As soon as we get our son through college, we will begin putting additional money on the principal so hopefully we can have the house paid off by the time we're ready to retire.

Whether we stay here or move will depend on a lot of things, like cost of living (very low here in Oklahoma, higher in New Mexico - Albuquerque/Santa Fe area), the state of our health, etc. That's why we have Plan A and Plan B.

It seems like she is trying to plan
things for them she thinks they might like. I do not feel she is mistreating them as much as they probably just want to stay home and do all the things they are used to doing. The sound of the mother's note seems like there is some animosity towards her- could play out with how the chidren feel, they can pick up on things like this and play to their advantage. I say have a good talk with the kids as well as the MIL and let all know to give some- the grandmother wants the children over sometimes, not unreasonble on her part.
Plan
My plan is to get the proper number of strips ready and sent in (the syndicates require a certain number be submitted at once so they can see the continued potential). The artist and myself will be 50/50 partners (in writing, of course).

I believe my idea has potential for other outlets if it is picked up (think of some other comic characters).

The money will be split, but I cannot afford to pay anyone up front. Basically we would be business partners.
My plan - sm
Thank you all who responded. Yes, I definitely want to bring him to my house. I guess I just needed some others who love animals to reassure me. :-) I am going to see if he is there this afternoon and how he reacts when I pet him and if I think I can get him in a carrier by myself. Oh, and do not worry - he will DEFINITELY be neutered ASAP. That is not even an option for my cats! I will keep you updated. Thanks again, everyone! :-)
Zero, and plan to keep it that way!
//
sounds like a plan (sm)
You might want to discuss it with him first so he doesn't accuse you of being sneaky and not being sensitive to his needs (lol).

I was in pretty much the same boat and did what you are contemplating.

Guess what? My now ex put HIS money in a separate account (not accessible to me) and I STILL ended up paying all the bills!!

Can anyone recommend a plan for me?

I am 48 and do use my cellphone for emergency use only.  Right now, I have Cingular One Go Phone but used it so rarely that within a few months, I had 135.00 in my fund.

I called Cingular One and asked them to switch me over to another plan to use up the 135.00 and she said okay, go to 25 cents per minute and when you deplete your 135.00, you can switch back to the monthly 30.00 plan again.  Well, I went on a long trip, my car malfunctioned and when I went to call AAA, the cellphone said I had no minutes...seems I had bought air time which had expired rather than talk time...

So, I was told to buy a telephone card at a store for 100.00  which would last 365 days.  Befoire I do this, since I know so very little about the cellphone plans, I wonder if anyone has any great ideas for me or perhaps will say I should do what was suggested?

Thank you much!

I think it helps to plan.
Even if that would be for 7 days.  I like to somewhat plan, and then deviate when needed.  Staples are pretty much always on hand.  For something different, I'll look at cookbooks and write down the ingredients adding them to my shopping list.  I think having a list and pretty much knowing what you want to cook each day is a good way to save money and curb overspending on none-such items.  I am battling with getting my kids to eat more fruits and veggies, so I am having that struggle (should be eating more rice and not so many potatoes).  Good luck....
By the way, that's the plan..just have to get through this part first (nm)
f
Sounds like a plan to me!
I agree 100%. Look at her lack of personal responsibility. She has wealth and privilege most people only dream about. She spends her days partying, parading in front of the cameras in skimpy outfits, and essentially doing nothing useful whatsoever. Shame on her! May jail serve as a wake-up call for her to improve herself.
You know, sounds like a plan and
exactly what I was thinking as I returned home. I would not care if he weighed twice as much rather than change in the midst of all this crap and perhaps lose him?? I told her that and when she kept on was very forceful as she was starting to get under my skin. I do not mind mixing a small amount of wet with the dry like she advised after I was so emphatic with her about them not being able to do dialysis. I know the risks with weight, diabetes, arthritic conditions, etc. but I also know now is a bad time to change kitties food when so far so good with the brand I have been giving them. Love them too much to risk their lives right at this very time. I thought seriously about just what you said, changing vets.
