Ohio Christian school tells student to skip prom

FINDLAY, Ohio – A student at a fundamentalist Baptist school that forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing will be suspended if he takes his girlfriend to her public high school prom, his principal said.

Despite the warning, 17-year-old Tyler Frost, who has never been to a dance before, said he plans to attend Findlay High School's prom Saturday.

Frost, a senior at Heritage Christian School in northwest Ohio, agreed to the school's rules when he signed a statement of cooperation at the beginning of the year, principal Tim England said.

The teen, who is scheduled to receive his diploma May 24, would be suspended from classes and receive an "incomplete" on remaining assignments, England said. Frost also would not be permitted to attend graduation but would get a diploma once he completes final exams. If Frost is involved with alcohol or sex at the prom, he will be expelled, England said.

Frost's stepfather Stephan Johnson said the school's rules should not apply outside the classroom.

"He deserves to wear that cap and gown," Johnson said.

Frost said he thought he had handled the situation properly. Findlay requires students from other schools attending the prom to get a signature from their principal, which Frost did.

"I expected a short lecture about making the right decisions and not doing something stupid," Frost said. "I thought I would get his signature and that would be the end."

England acknowledged signing the form but warned Frost there would be consequences if he attended the dance. England then took the issue to a school committee made up of church members, who decided to threaten Frost with suspension.

"In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other," England said.

The handbook for the 84-student Christian school says rock music "is part of the counterculture which seeks to implant seeds of rebellion in young people's hearts and minds."

England said Frost's family should not be surprised by the school's position.

"For the parents to claim any injustice regarding this issue is at best forgetful and at worst disingenuous," he said. "It is our hope that the student and his parents will abide by the policies they have already agreed to."

The principal at Findlay High School, whose graduates include Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, said he respects, but does not agree with, Heritage Christian School's view of prom.

"I don't see (dancing and rock music) as immoral acts," Craig Kupferberg said.

If the school tells you to go to parenting classes

Is that a step away from the school calling the CPS?  I visited my aunt at a resturant she was telling me about her children's children.  She said the 12 yo was acting up really bad in school and he is about to get thrown out.  Every word out of that woman's mouth was it is because the DIL won't.... or the DIL doesn't........  Aunt has the kids more than the DIL does and she is constantly critising the DIL on everything.  She had their 2 yo son with her and he started grunting obviously messing his diaper and she hit him on the nose (not hard) and said STOP!  Then he threw up and she covered his mouth as if to stop him and it did not work and somehow that was all DIL fault also.   DIL would tell aunt what the pedi said and aunt disagrees that the pedi don't know what they are talking about, that she raised 3 boys and they were going to do things her way.  She disagrees with what the parenting classes are teaching.  You spank kids and spank them hard, she ran around with a hairbrush and a fly swatter when her kids were little.  Her DIL called me one night in tears because at some family function aunt started in on her and saying that she is incompetant and she needed aunt and DIL threw her plate of food at her. Aunt got peturbed because DIl was feeding her then 1 year-old cheerios.  I told the DIL that there is a government programs out there that can help her pay for childcare that she does not need to rely aunt.  I got the number from my daycare director and gave it to her.  She never called.  I had also told the DIL that she better start listening to the school and to the pedis and not the aunt because she is the one responsible for those kids and if aunt does something they are going to hold her responsible.  The aunt won't let her use anyone but her.  She is very bossy and the matriarch of the family.  I had offered to keep the kids on weekends but I am not good enough either.  I don't make my kids mind and aunt would have to work to hard undoing everything I did.  Funny, the school told me that whatever I was doing with my 5 year old to do it again with my 18 month old.  The DIL and son are mentally handicapped, both were in special education class in high school and both are janitors of the school which is probably the best job they will ever get.   Think they would do well though and their kids would thrive better if they had a better support system.  I wished there was something I could do to help but they did not want any of my help. I just don't like to go around them anymore.  I have turned down every offer my aunt had to watch my children.  No way.

Where in Ohio are you? I am in Ohio and we are deep in the snow! sm
Went to take the doggies out to potty and couldnt get my front door open!!!! Had to go out the garage and then shovel front walk and steps.
I don't SAY I'm Christian, I AM Christian. It doesn't matter how many 'pages'
need to be ONE item and I wouldn't shop there.  "...people, just like the rest of us...", "these types of attitudes..." hmmm...well, I stand by my convictions, it doesn't mean I'm judging anyone. It's my choice not to shop at stores that sell gay and lesbian related items. Say you're lesbian and your with your partner, and we bumped into each other in the mall, I wouldn't be disrespectful to you, but that doesn't mean that I agree with your lifestyle either.
How did they find out he was going to her prom
in the first place?? I would've went & just not told them... I'm sure he can fight it and get his diploma if he's completed his academics though.

Any suggestion for after-prom b'fast menu?
My youngest son is a h.s. senior. He has been dating a girl in his class for a year. My older son has also dating a girl in this senior class for 2 years, so I've gotten to know this group of kids and their friends pretty well since they tend to hang at our house.

The kids are talking about coming back to our house with their friends after the prom. We have a big screen t.v./theater setup. They want to watch a movie, and I promised to make them breakfast in the middle of the night. I'm very happy to do this, since around here, the kids like to drive to the NJ shore after the prom, and that is not something I encourage.

So, I'm just sort of thinking about this breakfast, which is months away. I'm looking for interesting ideas to make their after prom gathering special, even if it is a simple back-at-the-house thing. I can do the usual things, but I'm looking for something that might really make the kids smile.
Took my son and some friends to see Prom Night this weekend...

the girl in the movie takes psych meds for various reasons.  Anyway, she takes her pill bottle out of the medicine cabinet and there is a close-up of her pill bottle and it says "Klonapin."  I felt like I was work QA'ing a report!  I said "hey, they spelled that wrong."  My son just rolled his eyes and said "mom, it's a movie..."

Just thought I would share how I can never seem to get away from work!

I go along with the veggies and dip. Skip the crax

Skip the bread, which is where the carbs are -
Make the rest into a salad to eat with the soup! :-)

regarding the prom for little kids in the previous post: Yup, they have one. It's called a (sm)
semi-formal.  Eighth grade.  Some girls are spending upwards of a couple/three hundred dollars on a dress (not counting shoes, jewelry, makeup, hair accessories), parents renting them limos, etc.  You wanna talk excess????  This is just ridiculous!!!
My family (no kids) all voted to skip the gift-thing - sm
from now on. Most of us have tiny places where we can't squeeze one more object in without something else having to be thrown out. Most of us are on tight budgets (especially me!), and it gets harder every year to find a gift that is even worth mailing. So, without all the money-angst, and the horror of having to set foot in a Wal-Mart or Target during the Holidays or endure the the long lines at the Post Office, this year I'm actually looking forward to the Holidays for the first time in decades, instead of DREADING them. It can be a time of friendship & relaxation and enjoying the season, and not of shopping, credit card debt, and coming down with the flu.

Call the school. I had a threat like this in my high school and they cancelled school that day.
Thankfully, because the person making the threats was found with material for home made pipe bombs and quit a bit of ammunition and a shotgun. He was arrested and charged. Never allowed back in the school.

I think it would be safer to call the school and get classes cancelled for a day to investigate versus make a scene in the parking lot, especially if the student with the knife is inside with the knife.

Good luck. If nothing happens, pull your child out of school for a week. See what happens. I know that sounds horrible, but small towns is where this happens most often.
Funny story from Ohio

Seems there was a kitty loose, causing traffic woes ... see link

here in northeast Ohio we are bracing for some
snow - they say 6 to 8 inches tomorrow and another 4 to 6 inches tomorrow night, along with a high wind warning, so it will drift :( But then it warms up by the weekend so won't last too long.
I'm sure I'd be singing a different tune if I was in Ohio! :-D
But it's neat to see it here!
NE Ohio here. About 20 min. from Akron/Canton area. sm
Stay warm and out of the snow if you can!
good student?! you pay $500 and she

it's not like they have these kinds of field trips often.......and she is in drama and it's to participate in seeing Broadway plays.  I am sure they are getting a good hotel rate as a group, sharing rooms, etc., and perhaps some meals are included in that alone.

It's expensive in The Big Apple and rather she go with too much than not enough.  Since she is such a good student and this is school related and not really extra-curriculum activity, I think it would be the parent's responsibility to come up with the bulk and have her work part-time or save her holiday $$ upcoming for the trip in the Spring.

She could do extra chores in and around the home now, couldn't she, to earn more $$?

jes sayin.....and no I don't think you're cheap and I'm certainly not rich.....but this isn't Disney trip, it's Broadway shows and she is in drama.....

Are you really a nursing student?
Public health 101 - THEY ARE CONTAGIOUS!!!!! No, they are not an infectious disease, but all you have to do is stand next to a child with lice, brush up against them, brush up against their jacket, use the same computer headphones, etc., and instantly they have made you head a home now!

Obviously you have never had a child with this, or you would understand how frustrating it is. We bagged all the stuffed animals, steam cleaned mattresses, pillows, furniture, washed EVERYTHING in the house, etc., did all the treatment on my daughter's hair, and we got rid of them. I don't think you understand how much work this is, but we did it willingly to get rid of these pests. However, two weeks later my daughter came home with them AGAIN, because that same child's parents simply washed her hair in NIX, did not pick out the nits, and did not treat anything else in their house. This child was infested with lice, and she was allowed to be in school. The school nurse said there was nothing they could do about it as far as letting parents know because of privacy issues.

Out of 24 kids in her class, 16 of them got lice. The only ones who did not were the boys, because most of them had buzz cuts.

I don't think the OP was critizing or ridiculing the little girl, just stating how frustrated she is at the school system for allowing this to happen. She does not need to be in school where she can spread these to everyone she comes in contact with. I don't think the OP is being a pain in their butts, and I sincerely doubt that a family who is not willing to take care of a problem their child has is going to welcome outside help!

I really hope that you never have to experience this, because it is horrible. Just imagine your child knows (and can feel) that there are hundreds and hundreds of bugs crawling around on their head, making them itch like crazy!! My daughter begged me to make them go away, she could feel them crawling constantly, and it angers me that she should have to be subject to this repeatedly because someone is too lazy to EFFECTIVELY treat their child.

Enough said!
fairly new student
Hello all! I am a fairly new student of MT.I am going through M-TEC. Anyone else going through the same school??? I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions to help me out in my journey. I am sure that there are many of you out there who have some good suggestions on MT studying, finding words, answers to questions and so on. Thanks in advance!

girl look at her boyfriend. I do not thing this is a good idea at all.
Being a student is completely different than being a teacher.

But what about that bipolar student who might get ticked off
Seems to me odds are someone will get hurt if everyone carries guns, statistically speaking. Even an accident could happen, or the gun could be placed in the hands of someone who might just do more harm than good. Just IMHO.

I depends on the person/student. Not everyone is cut out for college.
And it would sure help if the local school systems would actually TEACH things like English grammar, etc. Isn't that more important than reading Hemingway?
18 college student-opinion about summer partying

I have an 18.5 year old who goes out of state to college.  So what ever partying goes on I don't know about it so I don't worry about it.  I cannot have control over something I don't see. She knows how I feel about underage drinking.

So my DD wants to to a fraternity party tonight, will be home around 1:30 a.m, has to be at work at 9 a.m.  She is trying to tell us it is not a drinking fraternity.  We were not born yesterday.   The people she would go with are not 21 and she has told us in the past they drink and tell their parents they are at a friends house at a sleep over.  (my daughter tends to reveal too much information that she cannot retract later) I am totally against this knowing up front that there will be drinking and reading too many horror stories. In my state if anyone under 21 is caught drinking they loose their license and so do parents if they supply the house and booze.

My husband is telling me she is an adult and I feel we can say no since we know all of this upfront.  What would you do in this  situation.

Thanks

UNC Student Killed, now WBC protestors plan to picket
I live in NC and the news of the murdered student body president (out of respect will not list her name here) has upset all of us in this area, of all religions and non-religious as well.  The WBC is a radical group calling themselves "Christians" who plan to protest at UNC during the memorial service for this beloved young woman.  The group is listed as a "hate group" but call themselves Christians and wear shirts and bear signs saying "God hates you" and God hates colleges, etc.  Their website proclaims "thank God another college student is dead."  This is so horrible and unspeakable.  For those who are not Christian, please do not believe for one moment that this represents common Christian viewpoints.  It definitely does not. The vast majority of Christians are horrified at what these people believe and proclaim.

I agree, no teacher should call a student 'retard', t

It's not funny and if it goes on for a long time, it's labeling.

perhaps it never does end.....ut-oh.....

Do what your heart tells you

Just my opinion, but I think you should do what your heart tells you. Sounds lame and cliche, but I think you know what I mean. If you're not happy, then you should seek happiness. I'm not one to say "DIVORCE!" but perhaps some time apart may rekindle what you both once felt. Absence makes the heart grow fonder OR out of sight, out of mind, right? You'll know which one it is once you try it. Staying for your children is not always the best thing, especially if they can see you're both not happy. They should see what a good marriage is like: loving, sharing, giving and NOT demeaning. I don't dare judge you, and I pray you find what your heart desires.

Stay away from anyone who tells you to snap out of it...
they are the ones who truly need help! I lost my dad and a grandson within a day of each other 18 months ago and still have not gotten over it. Granted, it is not on my mind as often as it was at first, but it is still everyday that I think about them. I truly have not had a good grief session over it. My doc said it will happen when I least expect it. He also suggested grief counseling and I am now starting to think I do need it. I am sorry for your loss. When our parents go it just reminds us of our own mortality. Good luck to you.
Yes...he tells me he is on fishing trips and that (sm)
there is no cell service there, so I can't call him, or reach him even if there was an emergency. And he does not call to check on us either.

Reminds me of a story my mom tells ---
My mother and grandfather were traveling and stopped at a coffee shop to get a quick snack. When my mother got to the table, my grandfather was putting sugar and cream in his coffee. My mother asked him when he started putting all that in his coffee as she had always known him to drink coffee black. He told her he really liked it black and not with all that stuff in it, but since he was paying for it he was going to use it!!!

Son's teacher tells his classmates he has ADHD...
My 12yo has ADHD diagnosed since he was 5.  He is now in the 6th grade and is having an extremely difficult time with his peers.  He is being picked on terribly, excluded from groups, bullied and harassed, always when the teacher is out of sight or has her back turned.  She knows it is happening but doesn't always see it because they're sneaky.  Last Friday was a worse than usual day for my son and the teacher actually witnessed some of the students being rude and mean to him.  My son left the room to use the bathroom and while he was away the teacher announced to the whole class that he has ADHD and to stop picking on him.  I know this is a fact because I asked several of the kids and they confirmed it.  The teacher called me at home tonight to explain what happened and why she said it.  She said she was so angry at the kids for the way they were treating my son and in a state of anger (the kind when you can't even think of words to express your emotions) she told them he had ADHD and his annoyances and behaviors are sometimes out of his control so stop picking on him.  She basically read them the riot act.  I realize she was trying to help and defend my son but even she admits maybe she made things worse.  My son told me today that somebody called him "sped" for special education.  I hurt so much for what he is going through and don't know what to do.  Isn't ADHD protected under privacy and confidentiality laws?  Did she violate my son't privacy or am I making a big deal out of it.  I am having a meeting with the teacher on Wednesday and need some advice on what to do next.
WOW - something tells me I wasn't meant to reveal
my age!  Let's try this again - FIFTY!!

what??? He walks out on his mom when she tells him to stay in the house, and do not ground him????
I am sorry, but she was absolutely right to ground him.  He is hanging around with kids that are way older than him and drinking... You think it is okay to let that go??  I say he needs to learn that he is not the one in charge of this family and thatn Mom is...  Every family has rules for their children and if the rules for that family are broken, it is the responsiblity of the parents to dish out the consequences.  Yes encourage the good behavior and by all means tell them that you love them unconditionally every day (several times), but you are not their buddy, you are their parent
