Update: We went ice skating yesterday pm and he had a great time (sm)

Posted By: OP - Thanks all! on 2007-12-28
In Reply to: My 10 year old, non-sports-oriented son is so sad! (sm) - Worried mom

I told him we are going to look into more places where he can go and do the types of things he likes to do. However, I do disgree that there is anything wrong with other sports...to each his/her own. If someone loves ball sports, I don't see that as making them a "follower". Everyone has an aptitude for different things. Thanks for all the suggestions and insight everyone!

It was a great time - I just hate the time we are in now
I liked your post. Thanks for replying It's nice to know other people were raised like me. We seem to appreciate the things we have. Oh I should've also said we didn't have A/C growing up. My parents idea of A/C was having my sister and I wave a piece of cardboard in front of them. HA HA HA.

I just couldn't stand the 90s and 2000s are even worse. I hate all the politics going on today, the world events, the bleak future. The degenerates running around, listening to kids talk back to their parents, girls gone wild, etc, etc. I'm grateful my grandparents and mom are not alive anymore to have to go through this with us.

I love watching old movies and the music of the 40s/50s. If I was alive back then I would've been doing the jitterbug and all those other fun dances. Life seemed simpler and cleaner (even though I've got a mouth like a sailer - guess I got that from my Army days).

I wouldn't mind the turn of the century either. I love the clothing and the simple life. Those are the times when the husband took care of the wife. If I could be transported back to the 1800s I surely would in a second.
Have a Great Time
Even though I'm not a country music lover, I love Tim. Relax and have fun.
While it is a great time to buy...
the banks are very picky now who they are lending money to. DH and I just this morning refinanced our mortgage to 4.8% but our lender (Countrywide) let us know the type of person they are looking for. We have been with them for 15 years, have a great pay history, never late, always pay extra on the principal each month, have a credit score of 805 and no debt but our home. They told us the rates are high for anyone not at 700 or above credit score, anyone with any unmanageable debt (including car payments) and now MUST prove income (which is great compared to how anyone could get a loan not too long ago). Make a few calls and see what rate you can get. We were also offered a 3.75% for 15 years, which is fabulous. We only owe 160,000 on our home, so we jumped at the chance to just drop a full point down to 4.8% on a 30 year and may even take the 15 year. Good luck.
This time of year can be great but

Dealing with in-laws is awful sometimes.  I just need to vent so whoever does not want to hear it you mine as well stop reading now.  My father-in-law is crazy and I mean he is bipolar.  He thinks he is so innocent and people are out to get him when he stirs up trouble constantly.  This is the first time we have seen him at Christmas in 3 years.  He has caused trouble with my BIL and SIL and they have wrote him off yet again.  My hubbie says he does not want to do that because of the fact of what if something happens to him, he would regret it.  He wants to be forgiving which I understand it is his dad, but oh my gosh he stood in our living room last night and told us a bunch of lies which I am know for a fact are lies and then starts preaching to us about people and unforgiveness.  I was getting so mad I wanted to cry right there and I could not go to sleep last night I was so frustrated.  AAAHHHAAHHH!!

Anyways just wanted to vent.  I do love this time of the year with the decorations and Christmas music just could do with a little less of the drama.  I wish people did not have to be dumb sometimes.  Okay I am done,  Thanks for letting me vent!!

Yippy! Have a great time. Now you
can do a little shopping, LOL.

I'd have a ball in Yellowstone. Just be careful around the beautiful scalding lakes!

If you have time, you might want to use Google Earth and see what you can see from there.
Congrats, have a great time!........nm

Ribs would be great cos you can do them ahead of time

Was having a great time (Beware, long rambling:-)

while I was scooping the back so thought I'd try to get a couple of pics for DH, who is gone for the next 10 days for work.  He's a labradoodle that we got last summer at 4 months old and before anyone jumps in here and says they're overpriced mutts (which they are ) we got him from a shelter in another city.  All of the dogs I have had have been from shelters and would never pay hundreds or thousands when there are so many dogs that need homes.  We saw a brown one last summer that DH fell in love with, so I did some searching and this shelter had several.  The others had been picked up as strays, a couple of older dogs and several puppies, which I guess all but a couple died from parvo.  Jake was turned in by a family who thought he was too energetic for their 2-year-old.  He had kennel cough, we discovered, when we got him home and was sick for a few weeks, but not too bad a case, had some snotty nose and coughing, was really worried about pneumonia, but the vet said to go ahead and give him the vaccine and sometimes that helps them get over it a little easier.  He's got a nice combination of lab and poodle coat, needs to be raked once a week or so, but he doesn't shed.  He's a little pill for sure but I think is going to be a great dog with a little more work.  He's still pretty ~boisterous~ you might say on walks.  I'm a Dog Whisperer fan, just love that show and Cesar Millan, so we ordered the collar that he uses on that show, and it really is making a huge difference.  Also, I was really impressed when we got it.  How many things do you find these days that are made in the US?  His packaging on the collar had ~~we proudly support our country, made in the USA~~!!  Even more of a fan now!

I have been checking out boxer rescues and if we can afford a home of our own, hopefully next year sometime, I'd like to get a pal for him.  I'm actually a big boxer fan from way back, have a pic mom took of me as a baby in diapers sitting in the middle of a litter of boxer puppies with them crawling all over me!  a wonder any of us grew up, huh , with all the things we came in contact with like that, she'd probalby get hauled away for child abuse these days.  Dad found the mamma boxer wandering the country roads one hot summer day when he was hail adjusting.  She was struggling, pregnant, really hot and thirsty, so he brought her home, no one ever claimed her, so Duchess became a part of our family.  I had a boxer some years ago that I adopted from a puppy mill raid, where I helped take care of some of the dogs that were rescued, 200 and some of all varieties and ages, mostly all sick, filthy, malnourished, etc. in the the middle of January, below zero, snow, and a lot of them kept outside with no shelter, was a horrible mess, but people in that town really stepped up to the plate, donated all kinds of food, leashes, collars, bedding, vets donated their services, and all but a few of the dogs (too sick and had to be put down) were adopted.  Duke was a very sick pup at first and didn't know if he'd make it, but he was a wonderful dog with my kids when they were young!

Anyway, just sitting here browsing the board and rambling on...By the way Hayseed, I visited your website the other day because I wanted to see your web cam (really cool!) and saw you had an RIP pic for Arf, sorry for your loss.  I remember you said awhile back you thought it wouldn't be long but must have missed when he passed and crossed the bridge.

Sounds great..Question about baking time/temp..sm

How long do you bake the muffins and at what oven temp?  These sound wonderful & so much easier than making pumpkin bread.   Thanks!

Their scoops are GREAT. I have perfectly shaped cookies all the time now. (sm)
I have had this scoop about 8 years now and wouldn't give it up for the world.

Also have a stone I use quite a lot. Great to get that crispiness on something without having to fry it in grease.

Their stuff is a little high dollar, but the quality is great and if you have a party yourself you can get quite a bit of stuff for yourself.

At least go and enjoy. I love Pampered Chef parties.

Mainly do inline skating, but mix in a few other things - sm
like running about 1 or 2x a week (kinda hard on the knees, but I take an aspirin and do it anyway), also biking, and skiing when there's time. I like skating best for fitness 'cause it's a good low-impact cardio workout, especially if you go up a bunch of hills. If it rains, I either find a roller rink or go ice-skating, instead.
Figure skating outfits
My oldest daughter has just begun to take figure skating lessons.  Anyone have those outfits for warmups that they no longer need?  The ones available on ebay mostly ship from China. Thanks!!!  Any information on where else to find them would really be helpful!
PS: Skateboarding & skating ARE 'sports' - and can
actually progress to 'extreme' sports such as at the X-Games. Both activities require a lot more in the way of agility, balance, and general overall fitness than just kicking a silly ball around. I would tell him soccer is for sissies, and the REAL athletes are jumping stairs and grinding rails. Lots more interesting to watch, too!
Ooops sorry - Roller skating
x
I didn't start skating 'til I was almost 49! ;o)
.
Friend has a Cuisinart grind and brew type, dispenses 1 cup at a time. Great coffee! nm

Really? LATE 50s? That is awesome! I am 40 - husband tells me I'm too old to be skating! (sm)
says if I get hurt my bones won't heal up quickly LOL! But I have rollerblades and I love it. I just have to start making time. Thanks for the reminder!
The same thing happened with Skating with the Stars between Lloyd Eisler &
when Eisler's wife was 8 month's pregnant in Canada.  What a couple of selfish people.
Book of movie passes? Gift card to a popular restaurant? Ice or roller skating

I just got this new Dog yesterday
I just got this new Dog yesterday. She is so cute and good but is not trained yet. How do I get the dog to go to the door to let me know she needs to go potty? She is a sweet and very mild girl, gets along well with the cats and hardly barks. We only had two minor accidents yesterday. I could really use some tips. Thanks in advance.
Just yesterday my mom
and I were discussing dryer troubles.  Her quit working, she had a repair man take a look at it.  He vaccumed out all the lint and it cost her $150.00.  Then 3 weeks later, it quit working again.  Next time I will tell her to call you.
Went to the ER yesterday and they
said it was probably just a viral infection.  She is just in the bed sleeping on and off.  She don't want to play or do anything else.  She don't have an appetite.  She has been drinking pretty good though.  Popsicles is a good idea also.  I'll try that also.  Again, thanks so much for the advice.  It is definitely appreciated.

You should have been here yesterday
I live probably what is considered North Georgia but 19 miles south of Atlanta. The living is good where I am and the weather, about 60 yesterday and supposedly the same today. Our winters here usually mild, this year we have gotten down to the teens once or twice but nothing you probably see all the time. I wish we did not have tornados warnings here, scared of those. The weather in the summer can be HOT and humid normally. I would much rather have this than what I see with all that snow and ice. I only remember 2 times since the 80s of what you might term blizzard or icy conditions and even those gone in a few days.
yesterday's
performances, I would rather say that Danny will be voted off. Chris was really good last night and Adam will be the winner, he is just in another league.
Scheduled yesterday but....
I was also out of work, no big problem with me. I am talking about being looked at as professional, not cleaning, cooking, taking care of babies, on and on when you do have work. Posts are written about how to fit other things in while they work?? I think most of us from time to time run out of work, myself included.
Ballet - we went yesterday and...sm
she loves it, of course! They close the door and you don't get to watch, but you can hear them singing. I guess they'll start learning steps for their recital in June now. Dh is having a fit over what the costume "might cost." I just read the letter when I got home about paying the rest of the costume (gave deposit of $55). The cost for the class is $54 every six weeks. Does that seem good? Does anyone know what the costume could cost? I'll probably just call the teacher and ask, but why not state it in the letter? Is it something they don't even know yet? I'm very new to this ballet stuff so not sure.
I saw a little doggie yesterday in a car
as I pulled up to get out and looked and would have called the police, alone in the vehicle at a flea market but what saved the owner was they had the window down. The weather here was in the high 50s and climbing but I would not hesitate if the windows had been up.
It has been on MSNBC since yesterday.
I'm on the West coast and just heard about it last night.

It was clearly an accident and now she has a criminal record over it.
Yesterday I was at the mall and a

guy was walking along talking to a young girl. He rounded the corner and I was coming toward them. He stopped his conversation with her and said loudly to me,

You're pretty . . then went back to his conversation with her!  LOL! She did not seem upset at all.  Her brother? a friend?

Question. . jerk or just a darn nice guy?  LOL

She was also on Oprah yesterday
singing with Kelly Clarkson and Justin Limberlake, promoting her Duets with Rebba, I think that is what it is called, album. Think I will buy it. She is great. Also loved the sitcom, especially her with her ex and Barbara Jean. Very funny.
Someone already posted this yesterday

we had flurries yesterday....
none today...I am not excited about winter even though it is a beautiful season. I just hate below 0 weather and scraping ice off of my car.

Just wanted to thank you for your help yesterday. SM
It honestly has helped. When you said don't think of the whole amount to start with, and losing a little is more than gaining has really helped. All the comments I received were so nice and so many people can identify with this problem.  So far I am doing good. Wish me luck and thanks again!
My cat with lymphoma from yesterday.

I just wanted to thank all of you again for your kinds words to help me get through a very difficult time yesterday.  My little girl is gone.  She went very peacefully and fast.  She is now resting in my garden with a couple of garden statues to keep her company.  Her name was Sixer, as she had 6 toes on her left foot.  We got her from a shelter 10 years ago and we knew she was the one.  I wanted to get a female cat so that I would not be the only girl in the house.  She was the little girl I never had.

I had a very difficult morning today. It still feels so strange to not have her walking around the house.  Very lonely without her, especially working at home. The sun is shining again today, and I know she is in a better place.  My tears will subside and my heart won't be so empty some day, but right now not so much.

Again, my sincere thanks for being so kind.

Me too!! Saw it yesterday and thought the same!
It looks like they're acting!
I envy all of you. Our gas is $2.34 yesterday. PA
Live in a small town, but 11 miles away in another county, it was $1.48 last week. The GS around here are ripping us off and there's not a thing we can do about it.
Do you know how many times yesterday
that I started to ask this same exact question and then deleted it??? I had the opportunity the last two days to tell him I wanted out but I got scared and just stayed in the back of the house.
I did it - anon from yesterday (sm)
It's all reported and official. Now I don't feel so alone.  I don't want to get into a big discussion on here in case he is checking to see if I posted anything...but it's all documented by the right people and they have my back.  Starting my kids in counselling there as well.  I feel my backbone growing back :-)  If you have replies please reply to the orginal post below...don't want it to be right up top again, just in case.  Thanks for all the words of wisdom and encouragement yesterday.
Here in Louisville, we were 0 yesterday
(Friday) and will be 40 today (Saturday), with snow predicted for Sunday.
I saw all the posts on this subject yesterday too, --sm
and usually if the moderator moves a thread, there is an arrow showing that, or sometimes an explanation as to why something was eliminated. Sometimes if someone mentions a specific name or area, a thread might be removed, but she usually explains that. Maybe something went wrong with the system. Perhaps she will explain later when she sees this. I don't think it was placed on the *wrong board*. But congrats to the new parents!!!
When calling up my internet yesterday
playing over and over and over the picture of this mad man in different poses. I can understand why so many of the family and friends upset today with the media. Hubs made mention of every channel playing but I just keep watching fluff and not because I didn’t care, just because I know my heart and it would just break too much. The television channels were wrong in the fact they allowed this thing to have his 15 minutes.
I did not read the post yesterday and sorry
because I had puppies who got sick with mucus, bloody discharge from the anus, weight loss and I lost them. This is very lethal and had I read her post would have immediately told her to not wait for appointment to see veterinarian because this onset does not let someone take that long before young puppies can die. I had in my back yard and never could let young puppies be there ever. I hope hers is ok and she was able to get some assistance with the pup.
Missed these shows yesterday...sm

Anything good happen?  Did Nick reappear?  Please update me...

Yesterday's headlines killed me.
"Dr. Melfi quits treating Tony Soprano to start treating Paris Hilton!"

Too funny.

She said on The View that "Paris called and needed me so I had to make all my time available for Paris and her family!"

Yum! I did that yesterday with cornbread stuffing

daughter suspended yesterday - sm

I'm a little upset here folks.

My 15-year-old daughter is a freshman this year and this high school (small town) has had 3 sexually motivated attacks in the past 2 years, all of them last year.

As a precaution, my husband and I bought my daughter a little keychain for her house key that has a tiny little pepper spray cannister.  It's so small, it's only good for 1-2 sprays but enough to deter anyone from an attack.  It also has a safety button on it that has to be moved into position before you can spray it but its very easy to move with the thumb.  She has carried this with her since late last spring when two of the attacks happened.

Not to mention the fact that there have been several instances where the kids are walking home from the bus stop or home from a friends house when they are approached by a car of young men harrassing them.  Also, there have been numerous reports of attempted lurings recently, here and in the next town over.

Yesterday, as she was getting her book bag together before the end of school, getting ready to go out and catch the bus home, she had the keychain sitting out on the desk.  Her teacher happened to walk by and see the keychain laying out and picked it up to look at it.  You can't even tell it's a pepper spray until you look at it closely because the cannister slips into a holder that looks like a little bear. The spray comes from the bear's mouth.

So the teacher picks it up and says something like oh how cute.  Then my daughter told her that it was her protection.  The teacher questioned her about what she meant and she told her.  The teacher snatches the keychain, grabs my daughter's arm and marched her to the office for "having a weapon."

My daughter has now been suspended for 2 days.  I'm mad.  They don't keep an eye on the bullies, there are 2 kids in the school who have been convicted of sexual battery, and there was a stabbing right in front of the school about 3 years ago, where the buses drop and pick up.  No increased security at the school after ANY of these attacks.

I have read the policies for the district and in the list of multiple items classified as "weapons" NOWHERE does it say that pepper spray is considered a weapon.

I plan on meeting with the principal and the district superintendant today to discuss this.

No wonder the kids here don't like this school.  They don't feel safe here.

There's my rant.

Just started Nutrisystems yesterday - sm
actually signed up for it back in November but schedule was too nuts to get going on it, plus had not told DH about it (he went nuts last year when I said I wanted to do it as it is expensive and he did not want me spending the money). Well won $250 in December, MIL gave me $300 for Christmas and DH wanted to get me an expensive necklace ($600) for Christmas. So dropped on him that instead of getting a pretty bauble to pay for a month of the Nutrisystems. He is not happy but he will be in the long run. Going to stick to it for 4 months (will end up with 4 weeks of free food in the long run do to 2 deals I was able to swing with NS). I did NS years ago when I only had to lose 15 pounds, have about 70+ to go this time. So I am hoping as long as I am good about it (the exercise is my downfall) then I hope to be at least 40 pounds lighter in 4 months. Then I will just watch what I eat, do Lean Cuisine for dinner, etc. and try to keep the downward spiral going.
Yes, very sad. Heard the news yesterday.
New York news stations broke the news only 1-1/2 hours after it happened, but what I find more disturbing is that I heard this morning that his family heard about his death on the NEWS. Just tragic all around.
