we do not have much crime here but that may change with people out of work, etc. We have on occasion left doors unlocked when we go out for a while, by accident, and all has been well. We live on a private road though with 13 houses so we all look out for each other and strangers cars driving by (only 1 way in or out), etc. Routinely leave the dining room back door unlocked just because we let the dogs in and out there and forget to lock it when we go out. But one of the first things we did when we moved in was I insisted on key deadbolts on the front door and the door from the garage which opens into our family/great room and our 3 back doors (too many doors on this house--have 4, one is a slider). So we have double locks on those doors, cannot hurt. Everyone I know locks up, foolish not to no matter where you live.

Rural, no still don't lock
doors. When i think of doing it and do, my husband just unlocks when he steps out to smoke and does not re-lock. But i'd say the majority of people here don't lock doors. and some leave keys in their cars too.
I always lock my doors
my husband can come home and I never even hear him enter the house. My dogs usually bark at strangers but not at my hubby. If they are in the backyard the bark at leaves falling off trees, so I don't know if they might be barking if I am in danger or not. My son laughs cause I lock our glass stormdoor when it is warm outside and leave the large door open. He says there is no way that little piece of glass is going to stop someone from coming in but I say at least I will hear the glass break. I'm really glad you are okay.

Do you lock your doors at night?
I thought of this question last night while reading. Do you lock your doors at night? Do you ever on purpose leave your car keys in the ignition?
I guess I just assumed everyone locked their doors. I know in the old days people in rural communities didn't all lock their doors, but I figured they do now. But I read a couple of books recently which were set in modern times and they talk about how no one ever locks their doors in their small towns. Do you, or know of anyone, who does not lock the door to their house?

it is not necessary. I just leased a new place I am moving into next week, and she told me she never locks her doors, could barely come up with a door key for the new place for me.
MT, work at home. I am more concerned about locking the doors when I am at home than when I am gone. Not a lot of crime in this area, thank goodness, just don't want to be intruded upon.
I have relatives in fairly rural Maine who never lock, and I feel totally safe there. nm

Progressive rural
Been around a lot in several "blue" states. All rural areas definitely not created equally, but there are a lot of really fine, progressive, intelligent and accepting of race-creed-color-sexual bias rural areas in Wisconsin and Minnesota. I love it here for that reason.

I also live in a rural area and have a farm. Unfortunately a lot of people are moving to this area and since it is rural, decide that they can let their dogs "roam free" which means I have a lot of livestock killed. The owners, when notified, say that their baby could not possibly be responsible for the carnage and refuse to pay. I lost $4,000 worth of registered pregnant ewes (not counting the value of the fetal lambs) in one evening to a black lab which I shot and killed. Now I don't bother to give the owners a warning, I just shoot every dog that I find on my property unless it's something like a toy poodle.
But is that not rural and not city
taxes? I had some property in the country, 200 something compared to my city home of over 2,000.

Again - We live in a very rural area
Our cats were not only our pets, they served a purpose too. We have fields all around the house and the cats kept mice out of the barns and out of our house. We had our cats for 10+ years and they did just fine until SILs dogs moved back to town with her.
My animals are all checked regularly by the vet because we live on a farm. They probably see the vet more often than I visit the doctor for my checkups.
It is unbelievable how many nasty witches come out on this board when a person asks for a suggestion to help with a problem.
Everyone is such an animal lover but so quick to kill an animal or cut off ties with a family member because of an animal. Talk about double standards.
She loves her dogs like they are her children.
Not one single person who has responded with a nasty comment even came close to making a suggestion that would satisfy.

A friend just suggested that the SIL's dogs be kept in a kennel/dog run if she absolutely must keep her dogs up here.

For all of you out there who were so nasty. Try to put this in perspective.
Since she cares for her dogs like they were her children, think of it that way.
I may not like her dogs because the one killed my cats but I was trying to be mindful of how she felt about her dogs too, as I feel about my children.
Why because you live rural did you ever think crime is not everywhere?
No matter where you live, rural or big city, means nothing to criminals. I keep my doors locked always and another thing, I never work with my back to a door, just cannot. You need to be thankful in the part about the dogs barking and alerting you to something not right and yet here someone was standing in your home. Good common sense is what it takes in this world.

neighbors, beautiful lawns and homes (which dont' all look the same) and no roaming animals, boarded up houses etc. Given all that I still wouldn't live in a HOA, too many restrictions!
Mine was $150, little bitty rural coop
This on the face of it doesn't seem too bad, what with winter month running the furnace and everything, but I was pretty much living with my gentleman friend and spending less than a total of a week a month at my house, kept the furnace turned down to 55 to prevent pipe-freezing, and didn't have TVs or anything left on. I'm glad I wasn't around to see what it would have been had I been here all winter, with TV, computer, microwave space heater, furnace up to 68, washer/dryer, hot water heater, etc., etc., all running. EEK!

Locking doors
I'm the same way. I always keep my doors locked, no matter what. My hubby thinks that since we live in a rural area, we really don't need to, and he thinks I'm paranoid, but I do it just the same. We had lived in our home for about 6 months when a man came up to my front door and tried to open it. I had just gotten out of the shower and was running around in a towel. He was looking for a home that was for sale, which was down the road. I was so glad I had the habit of locking my doors!
Also you can just replace the doors
and drawer fronts if the framework of the cabinets are in good shape. Sometimes that gets a little iffy though if cabinets are old and no longer standard sizes. Home Depot and Lowe's sell a pretty good variety

There could be other people who want to come in besides just someone you know. I find this incredibly ridiculous in this time and age to keep open doors.

but in the house we used to live in you couldn't see into the den (we had french doors) duing the day. The room just looked dark. When my MIL or SIL would show up they would ring the bell and then they would press their face up to the door to see if anyone was in the room. I think this was worse than just walking in without knocking.

I had a very scary experience this morning and wanted to pass on my experience so everyone out there can protect themselves a little better too.
I live in a very rural area that is largely a farming community. We don't have town police, only county and they have to cover a very large county so if we need them in a hurry, it could take a little while. It took 27 minutes for them to respond to my 911 call this morning.
My husband left town this morning on business so it was just me and the kids home alone. I never lock my doors and when I am working, my back is to the front door.
About 40 minutes after my husband left, I was working along, listening to music softly while the kids were still sleeping. I never heard a car, car door, nothing.
The next thing I know, the dogs are going crazy in my bedroom. I hop up to see what's going on. I just thought someone was walking on the road and they were barking at them.
I walked into the bedroom and there stood a young hispanic male, probably in late teens or early 20s. He had just walked right into my bedroom through the sliding glass door. Evidently, he did not see my two pitbulls sound asleep on the bed.
So there this guy is standing, my dogs have him trapped between them and the door he closed behind him. I ran out to grab the phone and my gun. He then opened the door and split with both dogs tearing off after him.
There was an older model white toyota sitting in the driveway with another hispanic male sitting in the driver's seat. The runner jumped over the retaining wall to the driveway below and the guy in the car then saw the dogs running and he tried to get out of here in a hurry, slamming into a concrete post that our log splitter is chained to. Part of their bumper was laying in the driveway.
Just two weeks ago, someone busted out a plate glass window in a house not too far from here and took a bunch of electronic equipment.
So I'm standing out front, waving my 30-30 in one hand and the phone in the other as they take off up the road, which is a dead end. I went back into the house because by this time the kids were awake and wondering what was going on.
Two deputies showed up 27 minutes later. One goes up the road and the other takes my statement and helps me round up my dogs, which were pretty riled up still. Those dogs were just running circles around the yard.
The first deputy finds the car up the road, calls the second, he goes up, they were walking up one of the old horse trails and found the two kids hiding behind some rocks. Fools.
Both of them are behind bars now and..... I am no longer leaving my doors unlocked EVER. I'm also keeping a few shells at my desk in case I ever need to load my 30/30 in a hurry. I didn't have time to grab any this morning or I probably would have blown a few holes in that car and those kids.
I keep my doors locked because my
office is in the basement and I cannot hear a thing, not even the doorbell. My kids will come home from school and even though I know the time they get home they will come in my office to let me know they are home and scare the living daylights out of me. Glad everything turned out okay for you and they caught the guys.

My husband is a truck driver so I am home alone a lot. Even when he is home though at night I lock the door. You never know what kind of people are out there these days. I never leave my keys in my car either.
Lucky for me I live in the rural midwest. Personally, I don't care about designer shoes
or pedicures, etc. The average person doesn't think about those things and I could care less what "Michelle" is wearing or who she is wearing or where she shops or if she has sleeves or doesn't have sleeves. I don't give a rats patootie about any of the superficial crapola that is the Obamas. Good God, people, this country is going to heck in a handbasket, the unemployment rate is rising, and we are talking about Michelle Obama's ugly, way overpriced shoes!

At 9 months old, the baby can't open doors, so...
what we did with my son in my house was close all doors to contain him in the living areas, thus, away from bathrooms and other potential hazards. Then, all you have to do is baby proof the main areas.

Working in the dining room would positively drive me crazy. Been there, done that, and nobody liked it! I even considered putting my desk in my walk-in closet for awhile, but I couldn't figure out where to string the electric cords and the internet connection.

My husband can be home- doesn' matter- I always keep my doors locked. I see people on TV news who are broken in on, murdered, assulted, raped - they said where they lived didn't think it would happen there?? Happens everywhere.

I made my fiance nail shut all the windows in the house when I moved in with him until we bought new windows because lo and behold none of his windows locked. While this was probably not smart in case of a fire I would rather be alive to throw something out the window to get out rather than have someone come through the window at night (or day) and do who knows what.
You either need a door with a lock or - sm
to set up some kind of boobie trap that scares them first (I.e. something popping out at them when they enter the room). A taste of their own medicine would do them good
I go out and forget to lock
the door when I come back in, have left the keys in the lock. I hate it when husband sees that.
I do know the reason for the zip-lock
The zip-lock bag for socks is to prevent people from gouging a hole in the plastic bag to pull out the sock and look at it (for what reason, I'm not sure) before they buy the bag. Then, of course, they put that one back and take a virgin bag to the register!
Don't lock your car with the clicker!
A police officer friend of mine told me not to lock your car with the clicker - manually push the button down when you get out of the door. Criminals are sitting in parking lots watching people coming and going and have an electronic device that can copy your code and open your vehicle. They can be in your car in seconds and clean it out! They are able to open doors or the trunk.

There's been a time or two when I've forgotten to lock it, or worse, left my house/car keys in the front door. (DUMB!) But leaving my keys in the car? NEVER! That's just asking to get it stolen. Even if I'm just filling up at the gas station, I take the keys with me and lock the doors. People sometimes carjack at gas stations, or open the non-driver's side door to grab your purse. (I keep that on the floor out of sight, NOT on the front seat.)

I lived in the country until about a year ago, very rural less than 2000 total population. Never locked my doors, didn't even carry the key. One day I came home from work to find an ambulance and the state police on my lane. Thinking one of the neighbors up the lane must have had a medical issue, I went about my business -- UNTIL the state police knocked on my door asking me if I'd heard gunshots the night before. I said sure -- I always hear gunshots, even at night. Our neighbors across the road like to camp out and shoot targets into the wee hours. Then he started asking me if I saw any strange cars going up and down my lane. I said sure -- the people above us are always fixing someone's car and they drive like a bat out of he!!. He looked at me again in disbelief. Then he asked if I knew about the double homicide that happened on my lane less than 1/2 mile from my house the night before. I had no idea what he was talking about. Apparently, there was a drug deal gone bad between 2 couples and 1 couple got shot. The other couple left the scene and went a little past my house to a neighbor's house to use their phone. Never thought it could happen in my little hometown USA. After that, I always lock my doors. I'm with these other posters -- I especially lock my doors when I'm home.
When I was a kid, I used to sleep on the porch in the summertime. Now I wouldn't dream of letting my kids do that. My parents never locked the doors during the day, even when we ran errands, unless we weren't planning on coming home that night.

security latch as there's been a lot of break-ins at gun point lately. We live in an apt and since I work overnight I've actually had people that thought my door was their door and tried to unlock it...drunk ones, of course.
I've thought about leaving my keys in the car and the windowns down (1999 car with 137,000 miles on it)....JOKING.

someone (I think immigration) came to visit personnel at that company and found over 30 illegals using the same social security number. I guess that company didn't save much on that little venture.
Actually, relatives in suburban PA don't lock either and I feel safe there, roo. sm
But i would not feel safe in my own home unlocked, even though I'm in a gated community with tons of outside lights, etc. For some reason I feel safe in someone else's house more than my own.
I am getting up right now to lock my door. Some people have no regard for life anymore. nm
