I live in a rural community of only a couple hundred people, and most people here do not lock their doors. A lot of them also leave their keys in their cars, leave their cars running in the driveway for extended periods of time, etc. I know it's not a safe thing to do, it's just hard to remember to do these things when you have lived this way for so long, but I, myself, am trying to keep things locked up.
My son went away to college a few years ago, and the first thing that happened was his car was stolen (twice!) due to his habit of leaving his doors unlocked!!!!
