Does anyone have to deal with passive-aggressive people in their lives, and how do you do it? Quick example of my sister:
Sister calls many times a day with histrionics asking for advice.
I give my advice, sister does the opposite.
Things do not work out.
Sister blames me for things not working out as I was not supportive enough.
That is my vicious circle that I deal with all the time and want to stop. Am thinking of "breaking up" with my sister, but that seems extreme. Any ideas?

Seems like the 2 of you have a great friendship and enjoy one another's company. I'm more inclined with Robin's advice. I'm so flipping busy. Between working 10-14 hours a day, spending time with my husband, trying to find 'me' time to relax and unwind, I'm a total slacker when it comes to returning calls or initiating get-togethers. I'm pretty decent about checking my email, but only because I spend so much time in front of the computer working anyway. I always kind of figure everyone I care about who cares about me know where I am and how to reach me. I realize this probably makes me a total social retard but I just seriously rarely think to pick up the phone and call someone.
I'd keep going with things as they are. Maybe when it's just the two of you having lunch or something, you can talk to her more about the situation and make sure you don't feel like you're intruding on her time or anything.
My current cat doesn't watch much TV, but my last one liked to watch hockey. sm
He would sit in front of the TV and swat at the puck now and then. The only time my current 4-year-old cat watches TV is if the TiVo restarts for some reason and that little animated video comes on with the dancing TV and the loud music. He's fascinated by that and will come running to sit and watch it.

I taught my children to never use bad language (cuss), and they do not do it in front of me, but from what I am told, they do it when I am not around. Now if they can not cuss when I am around (which is a lot), why cannot they stop cussing all together? I did say d___ once when I was raising 2 teenage boys and at the end of my rope on what to do with them. My mother said d___ once when I was a little girl, and I remember praying that she would not be struck down or sent to he__. LOL

Well, my significant other and I went away today and I was driving. Now he is a very aggressive
driver and I am much more cautious so it did not go well. I just dont pass everything in site with one foot on the gas and one on the brake. What a pain to have a passenger like that in the car telling you this and that and I would have been way up there by nowetc. Not much fun. I dont like to drive by the seat of my pants.

Living with a passive-aggressive behavior spouse creates a daily emotional roller coaster. One is "stressed on an almost constant basis" and feel as if caring for an unresponsible teenager.
The passive-aggressive personality pretend not to listen, "forget on purpose," and purposefully do not complete tasks they agree to accomplish. Sullenness is also a characteristic of the behavior. The passsive-aggressive behavior can "rob" another one from a beautiful relationship. They cannot always see themselves and have a tendency to blame others (especially spouse) for their behavior. They sometimes display "revenge."
To rule out other serious medical conditions, encourage your husband to schedule an appointment with his primary care physician for "preventive care" only, letting him think nothing is wrong. The physician should order lab testing, and ask for thyroid function studies, etc.

Well guess what. I bought mace. Not the wimpy dog-park spray, either. This is law-enforcement grade. It's the real deal.
The next time that sorry, un-neutered son-of-a-biotch comes anywhere near me, he's getting not just a warning squirt, he's getting the entire bottle in his face, maybe enough to close up his throat and kill him. I sure hope it does.

I don't have deaf dogs, although I would in a heartbeat without question. However, I have two dogs and I train them with voice and with hand motions as well. Its amazing how much they knew with hand motions before I even trained them because I make those motions subconsciously when giving them my commands. I did this for their safety in public situations and because one is in search and rescue and its easier and sometimes good to have them not only paying attention to you but also to be able to communicate in silence depending on the situation. it also helps because should someone else try to control your dog, they would have to know the signs, much like teaching a dog commands in another language. Its pretty cool stuff really. They pick up movement far faster and with seemingly greater intelligence than the sound of whatever word you are giving. I am amazed everyday at how intelligent my dogs can be. ;)

My "dad" is being sent home from the hospital to live with me. He has nowhere else to go. He is actually my stepdad. I think highly enough of him to help him out when he needs it, not let him live on the street or do without anything, but now it seems I am going to have to take care of im physically for several months while we are on a waiting list for an assisted living facility. He can barely walk and cannot tend to his lower hygiene needs. He and my mother were married from the time I was 3 until 8. He was very mean to us during that time. My mom divorced him, but he had adopted us and given us his last name. He got visitation rights once a month, and was very nice during that time, paid child support for a while but then in my teen years stopped paying it. Later I heard from him about once a year from the time I was about 21 to 39. He lived with my brother (his biological son) for a while when he was healthy. Now that he is ill they have shipped him three states up to me. I have two little children at home, a marriage that is on the rocks, and I work full-time. I also have some health problems of my own. Right now I am having extremely bad PMS and tomorrow morning I have to bring him home to my house. In addition, he curses all the time and is very loud and annoying, and I don't have a bedroom for him, so one of my kids is going to have to give up their room. Whew!! I feel better just spitting it all out!!
American Southern Language
Okay, I need some help. I live northern Florida - not a native. A friend of mine in dental school says one of his instructors uses this phrase, "Your work looks like a cat could go through it." No one in the class knows what this means. Anyone know? TIA

Both were borderline diabetic and had heavy heart disease and strokes in their families. My niece had it done and BS'd her way through it. Easy to con a psychiatrist into thinking your life isn't worth living etc and then they fill out the paperwork for the insurance.
Do you use bad language / dirty words?
I try not to use dirty words. I feel that it just shows that I have a limited vocabulary. (My kids hate that). However, there are times, that I fall back and say things I should not.
Today was one of those days. I said the "f" word. Well, actually, I didn't say the "f" word. I said I am "f" mad. Not fing mad just "f" (the letter) mad.
I always told my children that this is a word that should only be used in the most dire circumstance if at all.

Learn to speak your partner's love language.
For example, when my husband does things around the house for me (acts of service), I really feel loved by him, so he makes it a point to do those things. He, on the other hand, is a 'touch and affection' kind of guy, so when I wrap my arms around him, stroke his hair, etc., he really feels loved by me. It's hard for me, because I'll do things for my husband all the time and think I'm showing my love, but since that's not his love language, it does nothing for him.
Was it her poor language or the fact it was "ebonics" irritating you?
I'm not touching this one because it's starting to sound a bit like racially-motivated irritation rather than simply poor language skills.

bought for them? My husband & I disagree on this. Our 15-year-old daughter wants a DVD from a rock group that has the adult language warnings on them and I don't want them to have any of them, but he doesn't see a problem with it. He says she can hear language like that at school but I don't think a kid should own it to listen to the foul mouthed stuff at their own leisure. What do you think?

We briefly looked at emigrating to Canada. They have a point system for admission. You must know at least one and preferably two of their national languages to be admitted (English and French). You also must be young, healthy, and either independently wealthy, or educated and highly skilled in high-income professions. You cannot have a family member with a chronic illness, even if they are not coming with you, because you might send your income home to help them rather than spending it in the Canadian economy. Every child or dependent you have is measured against your wage earning power and if it looks like your family might tax the social system too much, you are turned down. This all makes perfect sense even though it may seem unfair (we looked at it before and decided not to go due to their arms laws. Now they wouldn't take us anyway because I have been diagnosed with MS since then).
This is very, very different from the US who it seems will take anyone and everyone.
I heard about a US chicken processing factory that was working with Welfare to put people to work because their supply of immigrant labor had run short. So, why don't we limit immigration until every American is working who can? And pay them a living wage with healthcare (illegal immigrants are too afraid to ask for these things and so the wage drops and benefits are not provided).

I am a Democrat and I'm a news nut, so I pretty much divided my time between the 2 channels.
My only gripe with Fox is when they rag on other news shows and/or reporters/anchors. I find it pretty unprofessional, but other than that, I appreciate the diversity. And I'm a long-time fan of Bill Hemmer. I was pleasantly surprised to see him pop up on Fox ;-)

and I am a Republican, but I don't think that's why. I like their whole set up as far as different shows all day and I enjoy Hannity and Colmes as much as The Factor. They do lean more conservatively, but I think they have a pretty decent mix of all points of view.
I don't watch much TV either
The number of commercial interruptions is something I can't stand - there are so many FOOD COMMERCIALS! No wonder this country has a weight problem. We are given subliminal messages to eat, eat, eat! I like Animal Planet and Discovery Channel mostly but that's about it.
why would you want to watch
it's the same dialogue day after day after day, with the same expressions day after day after day, do these people seriously go the the job site and read these lines and make these expressions day after day, what a waste of time when they could be doing something good, but worst are the people who sit and watch the same dialogue and expressions day after day after day, when they could be doing something good.

I love history, thanks to some gifted teachers I had back in grade school. They told us that in order to understand and enjoy history, you must put historical information in context. That is, you need to remember the PEOPLE and relate to them. These were people just like the rest of us with the same concerns for family, home, safety, etc. So, I always try to imagine me doing the things that people in history did. If things were so bad in the U.S. today, could I fight to change and throw off that government, then work to build a new country? It's amazing what these people did.
So, I've always tried to imagine myself in the position of the people we learn about in history. I try to imagine life in their time, and try to imagine doing what they did in the current time.
And when it comes to David McCullough, I can't praise enough. He can bring history alive for even the most history-hating person. I highly recommend his book on which this series is based. There is far more detail. The series really doesn't show the depth of the friendship between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. They were the fastest of friends and admired and respected each other greatly. That friendship developed during their time together in France, but that part of John Adams' life was only briefly shown. I believe the next episode will show how their friendship crumbled when they were President and Vice-President together.
Oh! I also have to admit that since I live in Philadelphia, it's very easy for me to imagine these events in the place where they happened. Back in the early 1980s, I worked just across the street and on the eastern corner from Independence Hall. Prior to the 9/11 security, I could simply wander in and out of that building, and all the other historic buildings in the area. I used to just sit on a bench and look at that building and imagine Adams, Jefferson and all the others walking in and out of the place.
If you really like American history, I also recommend McCullough's book on Harry S Truman. I downloaded it as an audiobook and listened to it on my iPod. I loved it, and I hear it is also in the works for an HBO miniseries.
How can you watch her do this?

When my teenage son picks on the dog, I just wrestle him to the ground and pretend to pound him into submission and I get the dog to join in. She still mostly avoids him and prefers me, but maybe when your son walked in, he was alpha, you changed the way you were behaving and the dog just picked up on it.
Snapping a dish towel on the head of your grown son can be really good for the soul!
No - I did not watch the trial
start to finish, as I had to work. I lived in LA at that time. I think the timing of this was crucial - just after the Rodney King debacle. I think Johnnie Cochran was very charming and had that jury in the palm of his hands. I think the investigation was botched. I'm not an expert on the trial and it's true, I don't know everything about it, but just my opinion. Even if he didn't do it, who in the heck would write this kind of book - it's just distgustingly insensitive to the victim's family, who think he did do it and who were there from start to finish.

happen to see the same show you are talking about. It was VERY eye opening. I felt so bad for the woman who was involved with this scammer. It is much the same as women who get *involved* with men in prison. All these men want is money and they do not care who they get it from.
Even if the mom has no money, he does not care. His *anger* is just a ploy to make her feel guilty. I can guarantee that he has no son, he is not who he says he is, and he is probably in the middle east somewhere, as I do believe the man on Dr. Phil was in the middle east and tried to pass off his accent as from somewhere else. Please don't be too hard on your mom. She is vulnerable and *love smit*, but she needs to know the truth. Perhaps contact the Dr. Phil show and they may send a tape of that show, or he may have some personal advice for her. Good luck.

I like pro hockey and the NFL. But are they overpaid? OMG yes. I can't believe what some of those guys get to hit a ball or tackle somebody. It's insane. Not to mention the special treatment they get when they break the law. Anybody else would be sitting in jail for some of the stuff they get away with.

I have 12-year-old daughter and I feel she is just as entitled to vote as I am (if I voted which I don't). This is America and we all have rights no matter our age.
Now, if older people are playing games with the voting, that is a whole other story and AI should change their voting policy somehow so it is fair and the most talented person wins.

I had a little girl who came for the summer to stay with her father and his family down our street. The child came to play with my daughter. She was so nice, sweet, etc. but my hubby then told me to watch out, the child had loads of issues. Now how he would know that, I sure was not seeing it. Bottom lining it, my child had a bird and this little girl decided to kick the cage with the bird in it. My daughter told her to stop, 1 thing lead to another and the visiting child wound up biting my daughter all over her back, shoulders, etc. On taking my daughter to the emergency room, the nurse there said worse case of bites she had seen in her 20 years experience. I had shown this child nothing by niceness and yet this is what wound up happening.
If you didn't know them before, watch out.
You will be their best friend while they are in prison, they will probably want you to keep sending or bringing them things. Usually you will never hear from them again when they are released. Not always, but often that's what happens. Just beware.
