I am thinking maybe she never had the big wedding, maybe her first one was a simple ceremony at a city hall, who knows and now she wants the works. Granted she could do it more economically, but if he is not complaining that she is breaking the bank (I assume he is not going in debt over this) then there is not much you can do about it. My stepmom wanted something a bit fancy too, wanted the reception at the Dupont restaurant in Wilminton, DE -- quite a nice place (old Dupont mansion) and very expensive. Luckily they were booked so she took a page out of my wedding, and had it catered and had the reception at my dad's house (pool, large house and yard)though they married in a park down by the Brandywine river (which I think was free). He did not go nuts on the rings either and they did ring shop together. They did honeymoon for 2 weeks in the caribbean though so I am sure that cost a pretty penny which I know my dad paid for. She is 12 years younger and it was a whirlwind courtship; met her 3 months after my mom died, engaged 2 months later and married 4 months later. We all urged for a prenup but dad would not hear of it. She swears she wants nothing; though she did talk my dad into buying a new house (she will get that) and selling his (to pay for the new one $350K), and she sold hers and invested her profit; no putting it in the joint account or into the new house which needs about $50K of repairs (the remainder of my dad's profit on his house sale and the house I grew up in. So she might not be after his money but she did want a nicer, bigger and, paid for, house and she got it. Granted she is the one now that will have to take care of him in his old age, so it is probably a fair trade in the end as long as she does not shove him away in a nursing home when he becomes too much trouble, got a ways to go as yet as he is only 72 but has several issues but not in bad health. Guess we will see just how much she loves my dad in the end.
