*Ebonics* refers to the street slang, etc. (often heard in -sm

rap music, etc. Lots of white people, Hispanics, and even some Asians (all gangsta' wannabes) speak Ebonics as well. It's practically a second language in itself, so referring Ebonics-speakers to ESL isn't off the mark at all.

If you've never heard of Ebonics, you can't possibly be in NY
Unless you just landed from another country.

Sorry, but I would assume at the very least (and I mean VERY least) 80% of Americans know what Ebonics is.

The very fact you took 'dat' to be a slam to Indians kinda shows something struck a nerve with you.

If you live in NYC as you claimed earlier, I doubt you've been here long.

Flame away, knock yourself out...You sound LESS American with every post. I fail to see how someone inquiring if you were in India would result in such pure unadulterated outrage unless a nerve had been struck.

I'm outta this thread and off to work.

Osteo refers to bone. Ostial refers to a narrowing of an artery.

She refers to other posts
in whichever one she is RUINING at that moment. Laura Bush, President Bush, WMD, Iraq, Katrina, doctors, who should be MTs, etc. Usually nothing she is saying in either post has much to do with what the thread is really about. She just always turns it around so that she can spread her negativity to as many threads as possible. I don't have time for this. Turning the 'puter off for the night. Hopefully I will still be allowed to post when I check back in tomorrow. LOL. I just had to say something. Thanks for agreeing ss!
Refers to 2 different processes?

I believe that we are actually talking about two different processes.  Regarding the law about electronic medical records, I thought that referred to the push that all records be accessible electronically whether transcribed by a live person or not.

The other system is the point and click program, which is already in use in some doctor's offices, ERs, etc.  I don't know if it's available for acute care reports, but I personally know of at least one doctor's office and one ER that uses it exclusively, with no live MTs or editors.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Refers to 2 different processes
One of our local clinics uses the point and click system. I was talking to a podiatrist about it and he said when he receives a patient's record it is a mess and about all it gives is a diagnosis. It is coming and I don't know anything we can do about it, but it is terrible. If the shoe was on the other foot, I don't think the doctors would like it very much!
A platform usually refers to the the program

Distance is a factor but box OP refers to sm

makes a difference as well. I have been in this house for 10 years, and while we are probably 2 miles at most down the "line," we are unable to get DSL because the equipment and lines to our house are old and outdated. We didn't even have caller ID until about 6 years ago when they finally updated the box for this area. We are on a dirt road and were told recently that they will not be putting in DSL here, and the only way we will get high-speed is if we see them laying fiberoptic cable. We thought we might get lucky a couple of years ago when they started putting in 1000 houses across from us, but with the housing bust, that has been derailed also. So for now, I will have to be happy with my Sprint EVDO service.

Ebonics
Ebonics was the name for the dialect in the US also known as 'black English' - where that becomes dat, neighborhood becomes da-hood. Grammar rules also get turned on their head. As in: 'We be goin' to da sto... ya want some chickin'?

Now before anybody slams me for explaining this - go look it up yourself. There was a movement about 20 years ago to actually accept Ebonics as an alternative form of English.
Who prefers VR and who refers straight typing? nm

802.11 refers to IEEE code section.
These are the people who write the specs for how wireless works. 802.11a is the first generation, 802.11b, second, etc. The latest, I believe, is now 802.11g. While speed is important, and improved in the newer generations, it's also important to know what protocol the router uses as some types are not compatible. Your best bet would be to read up on the subject online by trying a site like www.howstuffworks.com. Do a search for wireless networking.
One that speaks EBONICS. - nm

Thank you so much 'Explaining Ebonics'!
You strike me as a very nice person.
Yes, DeeAnn answered my question, very clearly, and I thanked her.

About blanks and markers:

If I cannot hear something well, I type 5 underscores, then I send a 'note' to my QA
with _____ 2:30, what is the time marker.
This is no problem, I KNOW this.

My particular question was, how shall I 'mark' it for the QA in case I THINK I heard correctly, but I am not sure!
Shall I put the questionable word berween 2 question marks, like that: ?bezoar? or shall I just put _____ and the time marker?

Did you finally understand what I mean with my question?

Is it a stupid question? Is it possible that the so experienced MTs (???) therefore thought that I might be Indian? And it had right from the beginning nothing to do with my grammar or my syntax?

I think this was what paranoid 'curious' assumed that I just asked a question that was too stupid to be asked by an US MT.

On this board it is always emphasized:
There are no stupid questions.

What hypocrites.
Thank you, Explaining Ebonics, this all
makes sense and is very logical to me.

Isn't this then also the same problem when we correct VR?

Then we first read the word in the downloaded document, then listen to it, then think what it might be.

So we are confronted with 3 versions, sometimes.
Use of slang

Back in the day, over 20 years ago when I started transcribing, it was unheard of to transcribe slang in a report, but now you get your hand slapped if correct the slang.  Thanks AAMT for making it so acceptable.  Thank you AAMT for supporting outsourcing overseas. Thanks AAMT for making easier on those who taking our jobs away to not have know proper English.

We call that ebonics here in Hotlanta.
lol
I am so against ebonics and I live in the south
Here close to Atlanta it is ridiculous to hear all the time. It is so different from what you describe above. I would rather had a very fast, slurring of words physician speaking than to hear a professional using English wrong. I actually was having a very big problem with it before moving from Atlanta and hearing it day in and day out on the news channels. I really had to tune it out, that is how bad it was. I did not allow it spoken in my home, ever and by the way, it was being offered in the lower grades in school. Some blacks, as in my post above, consider speaking without ebonics, speaking white. What a shame!
I was referring to the "anymore", not the ebonics.

Slang word help
Slang in Discharge Summary:  Phos 2.1.  Would this be phosphate, phosphorus, or alkaline phosphatase?
MTs is not slang - it means more than one MT. Just like

DTRs, TMs, etc.  Those are quite often mistyped also - no apostrophe needed!!

OP did not use slang; you did (honky)

OP did not use slang above; you did above(honky)

meant to include ebonics is used and accepted
in this town. The schools are 95% segregated in the town. Very old southern roots. They do not care for change. Teaching children to speak properly is considered taking away from their "heritage". Why we moved here? Not really sure. People are very nice though. You are in the minority if you can speak, write, or read properly. Also, it is 100 miles or so SW of Columbus, GA, 30 miles or so NE of Albany
I want to thank 'Explaiing Ebonics' and 'Happy MTRobin'
for their comments.
These 2 are the only ones who showed to have a brain when answerin g my 1st question.
I am not Indian, not black, I live in New York. I am white and I have no contact with people who talk Ebonics.

To all the others who gave 'paranoid', actually 'stupid' comments to my question that opened this thread, I PITY you and get some education or visit a psychiatrist.

Definitely the most deranged poster is 'NOT PARANOID/NOT WORRIED.

I don't use slang, ever, unless it's in quotes from a patient or something. nm

On my account, have to type what they say, slang or not.
The correct way I've been told is satting.
If forced to transcribe the slang, then
satting would be correct. The two consonants after the vowel make the vowel short. In the dictation, "satting" (slang for saturating) is pronounced with a short "a" so that is how it should be transcribed. Typing only one "t" would make the vowel long. However, as at least one person has already pointed out, "satting" is slang and is not proper transcription style regardless of who demands it be typed that way.
slang website soo funny

This site is an interesting collection of slang/acronyms/abbreviations doctors use among themselves.  DO NOT assume this to be a reference site, it is for amusement only!

Now sit back and laugh!

A new word for my slang vocabulary! sm
"Snarky", huh? Love it! Guess it means what "cranky" meant to my generation! Gotta keep up with the vernacular and be a "with-it chick" (an outmoded expression in itself), even as a retired senior citizen! :D :D
What street?
RadGuy, what street is this Arby's on?  According to an old post of yours on MT Stars we live in the same city, and I would like to stay away from that Arby's. Sheesh, what will they think of to offshore next?
There is one right down the street who gets out (sm)
He is cute, but the post office just sent us all a letter to keep our dogs in.  I hope he didn't chase the mailman.
Great website for drug slang terms

Some of you might remember that I'm working for my BIL doing chemical dependency training videos (transcribing them).

Well, I came across a term that I'm unfamiliar with.  I did a websearch and found this website.  Thought others might find it helpful so decided to post it.

Happy MT week!

Not street names, but how about....
the STUPID names they give the different models of new homes... When we bought ours, they were things like El Capitan, El Sonoro..... etc.  We bought the smallest and cheapest model and my DH always said that we bought the EL CHEAPO!
street names
Used to work on Blue Rock STREET...lived with my folks on Blue Rock ROAD...which has about 3 blocks of what people think are Cheviot Road...goes back to Blue Rock Road....then 5 miles away, next street over is OLD Blue Rock Road Road....creates havoc for delivery people
Street names
We have Easy Street and Boardwalk in our subdivision.
I was across the street from his house sm
on a public sidewalk. I kind of think the officer is wrong, too, but I can still file a complaint. Luckily, I had a witness who saw the whole thing, too. I just might go ahead and do it. This hand is hurting where the leash twisted around it. I can move everything okay, it's just pretty bruised.
Street signs
We have a road named Creedmoor Road. You will see signs with it spelled that way, but also Creedmore and Creedmoore. Oy! Hey - I wanna spell it "Criedmore."

Sesame Street! How appropriate.
x
More ghetto wanna be slang a'la the MTV mindset I guess
Sounds intelligent doesn't it?
I am one. Can I change my tune? Maybe I'm across the street.

I won't even use words to describe you - there are none.

My neighbor across the street did that...sold

I was dying to ask her how much she got for her house but didn't want to be too nosy, so I didn't.  She was pregnant with twins and near the end of her pregnancy and not able to work full time anymore, and her husband had lost a good job and was working at a lower paying job to just try to get by, and the house only had 2 bedrooms and they already had a son and were having twin girls, and she didn't say but I think they were having trouble paying their mortgage.

Anyway, although I don't know if they got a fair price for their house I know the whole transaction was very fast and easy.  She told me that THEY were allowed to set the date that the house changed hands; it was totally up to them.  The whole thing was done in a just a couple of weeks, because they wanted to move and get settled into a place (they rented a duplex) with more bedrooms before the twins were born.

She told me that part of the reason they sold it like that was that the house needed some work done to it before they tried to sell it, and they just didn't have the time or the money to do it.

But, I have to say the company that bought it didn't do anything either.  She told me they told her they were going to go in and do work to it and then rent or sell it.  Well they didn't do a thing that I saw - no one was ever there working on it.  They put a sign in the yard that it was for sale or rent and within a couple of weeks someone bought it.

You're full of sh*t. You should see the house across the street...sm
where they live. It's a total DUMP, and this is a pretty nice neighborhood. They've been arrested for selling meth supplies. They dump their garbage behind our house. They dump big pots of ??? (cooking oil, I think) down the storm drain in front of their house.

We tried being nice at first, but with behavior like this, I'm done. These people are just rude.

This is not "being prejudiced." This is having to deal with rude neighbors who are bringing OUR property values down with that weed-infested DUMP over there.

I don't believe you're Indian, just posing as one to stir the pot.
That's the word on the street - hijacked. We'll see. I like

Just slang for girls, from a long time ago. Lots of them.. Dish, Broad, Chick...

Sounds cute! It's a street in Transcription City, USA

Reminds me of transients on street...Will work for food!

Working for 4 cpl and 2 cpl is the same as working for free.  To make a measly 40.00 a day, you'd have to type 1000 lines, not to mention that whopping 20.00 you'd make at 2 cpl rate with 1000 lines a day.  MT is not easy work regardless of if you have experience or are fresh out of school.  Heck, is there even a guarantee you would be given 1000 lines per day?

I can only imagine the portion of the total rate that is pocketed by SS.  I will guarantee it's a lot more than 4 cpl she is keeping for herself and charging to her clients.

My advice to anyone considering this internship:  Hit your books a bit harder, visit LWW.com, Stedmans.com, obtain reference books with samples, look on MT-related boards for folks offering to mentor, look for MTs needing help with their overflow work, and most of all, have a bit more respect for yourself and don't sell yourself short.

By the way, a minimum wage job pays better, and a tank of gas still costs more.

Sorry for the negativity, but ever since I saw that ad, I've wanted to puke over it.

I'm really sick of the stupid suburbia street names recently too
Trying to sound so woodsy and rustic. Meanwhile the houses all are different shades battle-ship gray and look like they've been stamped out with a cookie cutter. Really lame.
Lady across the street says she wears a "J". I asked does that stand for "jugs?" lol

Idaho case was botched in that a convicted sexual offender was out on the street to
kidnap this little girl and her younger brother.  This is what the Arubans were protesting when people are saying they botched a case when this stuff happens in America.
My uneducated but street-wise father had a term for people like that--"Smart Dummy"

Ebonics: Not a black thing or white thing. (sm)

I don't think there's any cause to get upset or defensive here.  Look it up on line...even colleges are offering courses in Ebonics!  ...well of course they are more sociology-type courses, but still, people are PAYING to learn about the why's and how's of this "other" language.

A quote from one of the sites I found:

"UT-Austin's "Introduction to the Study of African American English," teaches students that the sentence, "Nobody didn't leave" is not "mainstream English with mistakes," but rather a legitimate English dialect. "Ebonics: Myth and Facts" and "African-American English" are both offered at Harvard. Penn and UCLA also promote Ebonics as a legitimate dialect in, "Introduction to African American and Latino English" and "Afro-American Sociolinguistics: Black English," respectively."
