Alcoholics/drug addicts

Posted By: No name on 2006-07-01
In Reply to: Poll - Who lives with an alcoholic? nm

I have been married to a recovering alcohol for 23 years. It was rough for the first 2 years, but it did get much better. Stopped hanging around with old friends, etc. The third time in detox was the one that saved him and their counseling. I told him back then it was either his life or me and he chose me and our oldest son. It is not an easy thing to watch, but I knew there was a good person there and I was right. Good luck to anyone who has this disease in their lives, it is a hard road for sure. I stopped drinking when he did and I am glad I did, because our kids don't drink either. No everyone is as fortunate as us as some alcoholics have set backs and that is difficult and starts all over again. We may not be ionvited to some parties where there is drinking involved, but at this point I don't care nor does my husband. It is very interesting to watch people who do have drinking problems, not recognize them and you just have to say "wow, I was like that at one time".

Addicts
You know, cutting people out of your life that have been a part of your life for any amount of time is hard.  I have a sister, who has a great deal of set backs in her recovery because she will not cut out her "old friends."  She thinks that she can help lift them up, but they keep pulling her down.  I think the most important thing in any growth process is to surround yourself with supportive people!  Just my opinion:)
I never thought that we were addicts
just that our bodies develop a tolerance to the medications. I do not believe in the 12-step program and will not participate in it. I realize that a lot of people use it, but it is not for me. I know the definition of an addict, and I, in no way, resemble or exhibit an addicts behavior. I just feel that I need to stop taking or greatly reduce the amount of medication that I am taking in order to be able to think more clearly - although the return of pain will put me in the same frame of mind as the pills - I went through that for over 10 years with no pain medications. For the first 3 years, I had no problem, but when they started increasing my meds (not at my request or due to anything I had told them about my pain level), I knew that something was not right about the situation and knew that I needed to stop - probably in order to find another pain management specialist. I know that they do not all treat the same. This is a large group - you never see a doctor, only a nurse, they do not return phone calls promptly, as they have way too many patients. My husband works at a day-surgery center where these doctors work and it is nothing for them to do 20 cases or more a day - of injections or pain pumps, etc. Rather than offend them by just moving to a different doctors and jeopardizing my husband's job, I thought that getting off the main drug (oxy) or at least weaning partially before finding another doctor would be for the best. Since my husband works with these guys it greatly complicates the situation. I have been in this situation before where he has worked with a doctor that did not treat me properly (one even did a totally unnecessary surgical procedure after I had gone into the ER for flank pain), but because my husband worked with him, I had no recourse. Thankfully, my husband has started his own business and will probably be leaving the medical field within a year - then he will have no ties to the doctors in our area. thank you to everyone for your support and care this week. I know that I will make it - it is getting easier every day.
Good drug book vs. internet drug sites
I need to buy a new drug book.  At a prior job, about a year ago, one of the supervisors told me she used the internet exclusively.  What's the consensus and if you prefer the internet, which site or sites do you like.  Thanks in advance.

Can you help me with a drug? (sm)

sounds like "paraphosaphine".  I looked on every cancer site I knew, looked pyra, pira, fosa, phene, fene.  Couldn't find it anywhere.  Did I miss it?

Thanks

It is drug-eluting, so there QA!!!

Yes, drug-eluting...

The company I work for gives daily info e-mails and actually got one on this a few months ago - is common to transcribe eluding or alluding if you haven't heard it before.

best drug help website
Would be interested which is your fave drug reference source on the web for spellings, dosages, etc. - preferably one that doesn't result in tons of spam for illegal drug purchases - is there such a place?
Drug Screens
You are right! I would not be offended if asked to take a drug test - nothing to hide. I do not want someone having privy to my personal info who is on drugs and acting irresponsible. Had my identity stolen once, it is a nightmare to get straightened out. Don't want my SS# and other private info going to other countries either.

drug reference

I always use Drugs@FDA.  I have it in my favorites:  http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda/

You can look up drug names by using as few as three letters.  I find it's quick and efficient, and it's free, and because it's the FDA it's the latest info on drugs.

Help on drug board if you have second :O)
thanks.
Get a drug that you can sue the manufacturer for later. sm
Get cured now, get rich later. Check out the lawyers' ads on late night TV. "Did you take this drug? Are you still alive, just barely? Then call this toll free number now before you die so we can collect a settlement for you." Good luck.

Drug sites

What are some favorite drug sites?  Thanks in advance.

Drug sites
My favorite is rxlist.com
Rx drug card
I have one that's only $4.95 a month, and it's fabulous!! When I first applied for it online, I had 3 prescriptions waiting for me that were close to $60, but I paid less than $20 for them because the card was active within an hour after I ordered it!!
Drug Screen
Well, I thought that you listed drugs you too also, but they said it didn't matter. If anything at all came up they wouldn't let me have the job. I even showed them the bottle in my purse, and they said it just didn't matter, legal drugs or otherwise. Oh well, lesson learned I guess. Thanks for response.
I like this drug site... sm

http://prescriptiondrug-info.com/

There is a little pop-up but just close it.  It will also do part of the drug name, i.e., "cillin" or "exadine".

drug expansions
How you set up your expansions for drugs?
I use the first three letters and the last letter. For example, for Plavix, I would set it up as plax. Also, for drugs that I type frequently, I sometimes shorten it more - Lasix is lx.
I want to add dosages also, but I'm undecided how I want to do it. I would love to hear how others do it. Thanks in advance for sharing your ideas and suggestions.
QL DRUG REF 2007 . . . WHAT DO YOU USE INSTEAD

I have always used Stedman's QL electronic drug search reference material.  I loaded my 2007 and discovered that they have built in something called a Launch Ready Reference Bookshelf  that completely changes the way the drug reference works now.  One thing that is missing is the fuzzy search, which I have always loved and used tremendously.  I called Tech Support at Lippincott and at Stedman's and they both tell me that it is no longer part of the program and this new Bookshelf is going to be linked to all of their electronic products -- hence no fuzzy search.  So, my question is, what is everyone else using.  I have the Saunder's Pharmaceutical Word Book 2007 and I hate it as well, it takes too long to load and uses too much RAM to leave loaded.

Hope someone else has found an answer.

Both drug books come out new in Jan., I think, or maybe even Dec.

Drug s/l pronase 5 mcg
Hi -- I couldn't post to the Word Help Board for some reason.

Thanks -- I'm going to listen again to check for the Flonase.
drug books
Okay, I am sure this question has been asked before but here I go.  I am on the search for a new drug book.  I have narrowed it down to 3......Quick Look, Saunders and Lipinicott Nursing drug book.  Which drug book and/or books or references do everyone prefer?  I ask this because I recently purchased an Expander that is very similar to ShortHand and was twice the money!!!!  I do no want to make the same mistake again.  Thanks.
drug books
I like all three ie Quick Look, Saundrs, and American Drug Index, each has some advantages over both others, so... I update each every 3 years, rotating them.  That way I stay up to date and keep all their advantages.    Quick Look is anything but quick, but I really use their indications index.
Which Rx Drug Book to use?
I'm looking for a Rx drug book that I can incorporate into my spellcheck or expander.  I've looked at Stedman's Plus, QuickLook, and Saunder's Pharmaceutical Word Book.  So far I'm leaning to Saunder's since it seems like it'll do what I want it to do plus I get downloadable updates.  I'd hate to spend $100 on Stedman's only to find out it's nothing more than a dictionary, when I could've spent $30 on Saunder's.

If anyone has any advice about what program to buy, I'd greatly appreciate it!

drug books
I just ordered the newest electronic version of Quick Look from Stedman's a few months ago and am disappointed with it, especially for what I paid. I end up using Google all the time which is better anyway because the new version is not that good in my opinion and I can't find the drugs. The latest version is not what it is cracked up to be. My old version of Quick Look 2003 was better (which was provided by a company I used to work for), but my hard drive crashed so I bought the new version of Quick Look. Don't waste your money on it. Google has never let me down on research.
