phone costs
Hi,

Cell phone runs 89 per month,, that is the whole package, unlimited internet access, free text, nights and weekends, etc,,,,and I was able to do away with home internet altogether. No longer have a land line or DSL at home so the savings there made up the difference
Who pays for your phone lines?
I am thinking about letting a couple of my transcriptionists go home....I have opened a new business and am doing so well I am running out of space here in the office.  I can do more business if they go home, but call into my main account, who uses Lanier voicewriter and is still (unbelievably) on Medword......to those of you who type from home, who pays the monthly expense for your phone lines....and do you have one or two lines?
Beware of ink replacement costs. The more inexpensive the printer, the more the ink costs.

C-phone used to call in to dictating systems to receive work. A special phone. nm
nm
Transcend pays 3 cpl for all work done....sm
on the 6 major holidays.
And you have a company that pays this? or do you work on your own?
nm
The company I work for pays by the minute--
So when you have dictators just sitting there taking their time those minutes can add up.
I work for a place that pays per word (sm)
and to figure it you just get the total word count (using the word count feature in Word).  You would have to find out if the 1000 words is based on "a word is a word," or if there's some "formula" such as suggested in another reply, like every 5 characters counts as a word and does that include spaces in that count, blah, blah, blah.  I don't know. If it's just straight up $5.00 per actual 1000 words, then I don't think that's good at all.  I make .0085 per word, and I've figured out that it would be an average of 8.5 to 9.5 cents per line.  Anyway, if "a word is a word" at least, $5.00 per 1000 words would probably equal around 5-6 cents per line or so.
Can I ask where you work that pays editors per hour?
I have been editing for about 2 months now and have 7 years as a MT.  I am still working as a MT along with my new editor's position.  The company I am working for only pays by the line, so if you don't produce you get very little pay.
If you use a C-phone for work and have a digital phone

through cable, have you tried to take an incoming call?

We only have one phone line.  I rarely get/make calls and when I do we have cell phones.  I just started working with a C-phone and got digital phone.  I can go a month and my phone not ring, so far have gotten 3 calls today, but I'm afraid that if I try to answer the phone that I will lose my report.

I guess I could pull up a report and have my husband call on his C-phone and test it that way and then if I lose it no biggie.

I too question you overhead expenses. I work for a company that only gets 11-12 cpl and pays us 8-8.

The company I work for said cable phone wouldn't work, just FYI.

VR pays half of what typing pays...
If you would read her post more closely she said she does VR, which pays half of what straight typing does.  I do VR and have made 4 cpl, so 5 is actually good and 4-5 is an industry standard, and may be even less if you are an employee.  The problem is that you have to double your line counts in order to make decent money, which is not always easy.  I embrace VR because I like it better than straight typing, but it is not productive for everyone, no matter how hard you try.
It did not work with my C-phone (sm)

The function keys were not recognized, forward, backward on the foot pedal, etc.  I did not want to re-program my phone just to use, assuming I could figure out what it would recognize.  I sent it back.  Wonderful idea, great technology.  Works with a regular phone, though.  Received a prompt refund.  Hope this helps.

DSL does work through the phone line
I have mine through SBC. They sent filters to put on each phone line. Does not interfere with phone usage.

Since the modem is plugged into an electrical outlet as well, you will lose your connectivity if the electricity goes out.

You seem overly worried about no electricity. lol ???
RE: Need anyone's ideas on how to do this - I work via C-phone but need to go to my son's to
They do not have a land line but use cell phones.  Is there some way to use my c-pone through my cell phone so I can work while I'm there?  Thanks in advance
C-phone - How do I get the headset to work?

Hi all!

My question is "When my C-phone call is connected what is the sequence of buttons that are pushed (in what order?) so that connecting my headset doesn't drop the call?"  I have a program button set up as #*11, as per the manual for my headset.  However, when my call is connected and I press speaker/mute and then the headset program key, or when I press the headset program key first, either way, my call gets disconnected.  Any thoughts of what I may be doing wrong?  Thanks so much!

It will not work through phone lines....sm

I started on a Lanier at a hospital and then went home with it.  At the hospital it was connected directly to the computer.  I was told that you lose certain features through the phone lines and that is one of them.

Need a C-phone for work. Can I use a digital transcriber sm

I have 2 digital work stations.  One is Bytescribe call-in system.  The other is Philips station.  Neither have the actual phone part that you pick up.  I can call in to different numbers to get work.  Does anyone know if this will work?  I need a "C-phone" to get work for a new job, and I don't know if I should buy one or what.  I posted before, but no one answered.  Just thought I'd try and ask again.  Thanks.

Could not get Magic Jack to work with C-phone
I tried it on two different accounts, and there was too much skipping or dead air to use it. I ended up sending back the Magic Jack before free trial was over. Our internet tends to run a little slow sometimes so it may depend on how reliably fast your connection is. But as I said, I tried on two accounts and it would not work well enough on either, so it was definitely my internet connection that was the problem.
Company requires a C-phone. Will a Lanier Lx-219 work as well? sm

What is the difference in a Dictaphone, C-phone, Lanier LX-219 and Lanier Expresswriter or Voicewriter?

Thanks!

The hospital where I work took down the no cell phone signs
last year. Apparently they aren't as much of a problem as they once were. Also, I was an inpatient last year and was allowed to use my cell phone in my room.

It seems like I was told that they have machines that block the phones from getting a signal in areas of the hospital where they may cause interference with equipment.
I have MJ also and if I have too many programs open on my computer, my phone will not work. nm

Will Meditech work with cable based phone?

Hi all,

I have been offered a MT job with another company that requires me to call into the hospital's Meditech system.  I have never worked on Meditech so I don't have the slightest idea how to use it.  I am used to signing onto my computer and getting right into the system, not having to dial in anywhere.  I'm sure I would get used to it but my phone may be the problem.  I have my phone bundled in with my cable/high speed internet through Time Warner and the MTSO thinks this won't work, that I need something like Fair Point as a dedicated phone line.  Does anyone out there in MT land know anything about this?  The MTSO is anxious to hire and I'm anxious to start a job where I can finally make $ again and I don't want to miss out on this all because of the wrong phone!

C-phone help! Dial tone ok, but keys will not work.

There is a dial-tone when handset is lifted.  Keys do not work to program, dial, ect.  This is the same for 2 different units.  Any suggestions?

That's an idea -- does it matter that my cell phone won't work from the house??
It rings but then cuts you off as soon as you answer. I think we are too far from a tower.
Does anyone use laptop & cell phone/Internet Card for work?

I am not real computer literate but am wondering if I couldn't get unlimited Internet with a cell phone plan and use that for my on-line job/Internet connection exclusively. I have found plans for around $70/month.

If so, I was thinking too I could possibly give up my land line phone, Callwave, my dial-up ISP (as that is all we have available where live) and actually save a little money by doing so. I don't make/receive a lot of land line calls and I have a TracFone cell phone that I don't use much now. I get excellent reception with that where I live. We have a huge tower within walking distance of where I live but we live out in the "sticks". :D I know my connection would be dependent on the reception where I live and the cell phone service I would use. I am not sure which one truly has the best coverage and/or who may be using the tower by our home but TracFone apparently does. :)

TIA.

I won't work with C-phone. It used to work
with a C-phone, but they did an update and it will no longer work.  I know several people who used it and for the most part loved it, but now can't use it.  Tech support says the never said it would work with a C-phone and aren't helpful in trying to find a solution.
All things being equal, do you prefer to work with a C-phone or use WAV files over the internet? sm
What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of each.  I have only ever used a c-phone but think I may bet getting ready to use WAV files and foot pedal for an account and am a little anxious!  TIA
Need Lanier ExWriter to test. Will VDI station or C-phone work or can I rerecord?

I am unfamiliar with the Lanier ExWriter. Can somebody please fill me in? I have a C-phone, VDI station, a call-in system with L.E.E.C.H. capabilities that can download work onto my system from another, or rerecord equipment. Can you access files from call-in systems like you can with a regular telephone and C-phone? How is the sound quality? I am not to thrilled with the .dss or WAV files.

Thanks!

THANK YOU! That is my point. She still pays taxes, her DH still pays taxes...

so who exactly is getting cheated?  And just who are you talking about when you talk about whether it is "fair" or not.  I don't give a crap how much taxes my neighbor pays.  It's none of my business.  And if I found out they were paying less in taxes than me, I would ask them how they heck are they doing it so I can do it too!

I just want ask, is it necessary to get personal and insult?  You disagree with me, fine.  But I've been called a liar, a cheat, a no-ingetrity thief, my intelligence has been insulted, and I have had my parenting skills questioned.  That is a little over the top.  If you cannot debate an issue without resulting to personal attacks, then YOU are the stunted one!

It is a very good thing that some of you work at home, ALONE!  You are sorely lacking in people skills and diplomacy.  Let me guess, when you worked in the office you were one of those girls who didn't like to share her desk, griped if someone dropped a crumb on your desk, and kept track of everyone's breaks, lunches, and line counts just so you could tattle to the supervisor!  I've worked women like you, it was like working with kindergarteners.  That's why I came home to work.  Do us all a favor, looking in the mirror, count your wrinkles, and realize that this isn't high school anymore!

costs
I also agree that the cost of vet care has gone way up in the last 10 years, having animal companions is expensive. I think as more and more people are coming to realize their companions are senient beings they are willing to do whatever is necessary for optimum care just as you would do for a human. That being said, it is extremely expensive and where I used to have 5 cats and 2 dogs, I now have 3 cats and 1 dog due to losing some to old age and illness. Although I would love to have more, I know I cannot afford it if one of them gets sick.
Can you tell us how much this costs?
Have the Martel catalogue but oddly it does not give price. Am hoping it is under $50.
Rx costs
I get 2 of my meds from Canada.  Can you get yours that way and save $?  Just do a search for cheap drugs or Canadian drugs.
MT Costs
I have been a working MT for 2+ years and I am still buying things.  I have a full library of books but there are only a few I use all the time.  Still there are days when I find I need the others.  I believe I have around 16 total.  The Book Of Style is an important one.  I would recommend that for sure along with any other specialty books for the type of account you plan on typing.  I had my computer prior to training but with books, the MT course, pedals, software (spell checker, expander) I spent over $2,500.  This doesn't include a desk, chair or the other things you'll need. I would suggest you buy some 3-ring binders to keep samples in for each account you type.  I have a binder for every doctor/client.  Every doctor you come to learn to type will have his/her own rules.  The binders are my Bibles.  At first I went through a ton of legal pads.  I always keep one at my desk to jot things down.  Now I only need one on occasion.  It will be a learning experience and slow going at first, but hang in there.  Like some other MTs mentioned, it is not as easy as it sounds, but I do enjoy it.  Welcome to the club!
It costs more than $10 believe me.
They take a percentage of what is sent to you - it's not a flat rate fee. The more you make the more they take.
My costs have actually gone down
This year my property taxes will go from over $2,300 to $800 a year, that is because I have turned that magical number of 65. That is good and yet if I were to die, then the taxes would go right back up for hubby as he is 10 years younger and has not gotten there yet. He better treat me right!
I had a lot of trouble with static in my C-phone. I replaced the phone cord and that made a big

difference.  Also, have you tried a different headset?  Also someone told me one time that there is a microphone under your volume control on the right corner of the C-phone.  It's a tiny hole.  If you break off a Q-tip and stick that into the hole that will squelch a lot of background noise and that worked as well.  As far as getting your C-phone service, I heard that Dictaphone is "sunsetting" C-phones at the end of this year.  Meaning, they aren't going to service them anymore as they are considered an obsolete technology.  So, I would contact Dictaphone and see what your options are.

I know very little about Lanier equipment.  I've not used it as extensively as Dictaphone.  Is there a local appliance repair place in your area?  You might ask one of those places to take a look at your equipment and see what they think.  Kinda scary, cause they could do more harm than good, but maybe worth a shot.

Not much help, I know.  But I thought I would share what tiny bit of obscure knowledge I do have.

Yes, and that same jug of water costs how much after it's
been paid for with tax dollars, hauled in on trucks, and handed out by National Guardsmen and FEMA workers who are being paid and are away from their own families? That little jug of water costs more to the taxpayers than Perrier.
My son did too. It costs a lot and unless you're
a real people person who can SELL, you won't make any money and you'll spend a bundle. TURN AND RUN, don't walk away unless you're ready to LIVE IT! IT has to be all you think, talk, eat, use, buy, etc....and you won't make a bunch if you don't get people to sign up.
I cut my costs a year ago...
I have noticed very little difference. I get the same speed and the only things that inhibit that are the usual things such as when the ISP is doing an update etc. Everyone I know with different DSL companies have said the same. You can always go back up to the higher speed if it doesn't work well in your case. To me it was worth saving the extra $20/month
AT&T business costs
I pay 230 a month for three lines, unlimited long distance, and DSL on a business plan. The biggest difference is the DSL cost is higher, and they charge per jack on installation. As opposed to 20 per line, i pay a flat rate of 50 for the LD for all three lines.
hidden costs by being an IC

The taxes are more as an independent contractor.  period.

you pay the matching that the employer would pay.

Normally your benefits pkg from the hospital or employer of sick days, holidays, insurance, etc is worth about $10,000.  Somehow you have to absorb that with what you charge.  In addition to losing the matching the employer is paying.  Otherwise the company you are contracting with is making out like a bandit -- and you truly are coming out on the short end of the stick -- they know this -- and they are laughing up their sleeve until we wake up out here and start charging so they won't be coming out the winner in this all the time.  The very reason they OUTSOURCE is to get rid of those hidden costs and we now have taken on.

And then of course the hidden days down for work on computer, waiting for storms to pass, and the various and asundry responsibilities you take on and absorb that the company you are contracting with gets to turn loose of.

p.s. and oh please don't pop up with ITS WORTH A LOT TO TYPE IN MY JAMMIES.  No, we are expected to be professional whether in Gucci or WalMart specials.  And we should be paid accordingly.  That argument doesn't fly.  and being home with the kids doesn't either.  Only one thing can be done at one time, and you can watch the kids or you can transcribe but you can't do both simultaneously.  The guilt factor may be less when one needs to do errands in the day -- but guess what -- while people are sleeping guess who is up into the night beating the keys.  No, this should not be a trade off.  It's a business like any other business who does a contract with another company.

Actually, VR actually costs the client....sm
less money, which is why some are changing to it...to pay less for transcription, which is why WE get paid less. That is how it is with my company. So in essence, the company is taking a cut in pay as well....why else would anyone use it, including the MTSOs??? I'm just sayin'.
I've changed them between an old phone and new phone, but the same company, i.e. Nextel.
x
I use my c-phone whenever we travel. You can hook it directly into your room phone. Be sure and as
xx
Well, it costs sometimes. I have had to change employers before because
they were not going to negotiate with me. HOwever, there are plenty of places to work and I have luckily landed in 2 good ones.

I feel very fortunate today with my employment. I know full well it may change tomorrow but I am prepared - emotionally and financially - and will not let that disrupt my life. Too many options out there, folks.
I noticed this too! Costs me approximately
$50.00 more for the usual items such as health and beauty aids, cleaning supplies, paper products. Cost of living is going up and our salaries are not.

India's MTs are living very well, according to a friendly gal working for AOL out of Bombay.

I don't know what I am going to do. I got cable t.v. for the winter and feel like I am living extravagantly. There is so much I need. Even keeping my car warrantly valid requires a $500.00 tune up which is hard to budget for.

One thing I do not have is credit card debt.
MediSpell is decent and only costs around
It was about $10-$20 when I first got it, but I'm sure it's gone up since then. There's a free trial (or at least there was) and you can compare it to others. Not sure what Dorland's is like so I can't tell you comparison, but I've found MediSpell to be a decent medical spellchecker at a reasonable price for starting out. You can add to it, of course, too, but I don't think they ever issue updates like new drug names, tec. so you might want to invest in a more thorough one later on.
