Lighting not distracting (sm)
Lighting is not bright enough to be distracting. It has a dimmer switch with it and I always have it up as high as will go. I actually wish it was brighter. The light glows through the white letters on the black keys and you can see the glow between the keys, but it is very subtle. There are also two strips on the side edges of the keyboard that give off the color you selected. It is a heavy keyboard, so it stays put. Cord is in the middle rather than to the left or right.

Yesterday I reached for the ringing phone over the keyboard and across my desk, the wire to my headphones caught on the glass of water I had there and of course it knocked over the glass and a very significant amount of water went in the keyboard. I immediately flipped the board over while cursing the freakin' phone call that turned out to be a wrong number. No ill-effects from the flooded keyboard.

As for those cordless ones, I have never bought one because they are too $$$ and I go through keyboards way too fast to be spending that kind of money. I have had a cordless mouse. It lasted a couple of weeks before I ditched it.
Never. Too distracting.

Lighting
Yes you can, but it's really not distracting at all. It's just neat if you want to use it at night with no lights on in the room.
lighting and heat
Those are excellent ideas!  I'm printing all these ideas and will check into some of them.  You're right....moving the office would be the most reasonable (and free!).
stay off the internet - it is too distracting
work in small increments of time

That pic is too distracting, had to read the post twice.(nm)

office lighting comparison
Everyone's talking about the compact fluorescent lighting saving hundreds of per year in energy costs.  That's swell, but I have tried using these bulbs in my office, and the lighting is not at all adequate.  In my experience, the CFLs do not come close to light output of incandescent (standard) bulbs.  I'd have to buy extra lamps with CFLs to equal the amount of light I need and can get through standard bulbs.  I have my office lights on for 10+ hours a day.  I turn them off when I take a break, of course, and at the end of the day.  However, my power bill is through the roof already, as Ameren has dumped another rate increase on Illinois.    So:  Need the best lighting option for the lowest price possible.  Any ideas?
home office lighting
Any advice about the new full spectrum lighting that supposedly resembles daylight?  I rent my house, so can't install ceiling fixtures; can only use floor lamps and desk lamps.  I also have pretty severe seasonal affective disorder and need as much light as I can get here in the gray midwest.  The regular (incandescent) lights I've been using put off way too much heat in the summer and really don't provide good light in the winter.  The compact flourescent bulbs don't seem to be bright enough.  I'm thinking of trying the BlueMax full spectrum line.  Any experience from you guys out there?

Thanks!  I checked out the website and have emailed them for info.
Haven't heard, either, but I'm going to check. This is very distracting :). nm

Reduce lighting and screen glare
You might need a screen for your computer monitor to cut down on glare, and/or wear the lightest sunglasses you can find or get a new prescription for glare. You can't get rid of them, but this seems to help. Of course being an MT can cause headaches also, lol
I have mine turned off, found it distracting too. nm

I know how you feel. Working at home can be distracting, just having other things on our minds (sm)
like dirty dishes in the sink, piling up laundry, a bed right across the hall to take a nap in. What works for me is tune everything out including internet distractions and e-mails, phone calls. No more than a 10 minute break every couple of hours, 30 minutes lunch time and just hit those keys. The end result can be pretty rewarding.
You don't need to disable ..sm..
the laptop keyboard to plug in another one.  When you plug in the other one, it just takes over.
TY here, too. Would I be able to disable that w/ just a key command?

How do I disable Shorthand for more than

I know Esc stops one entry at a time, but sometimes (and I can't think where at the moment), ShortHand in general works but hitting Esc causes problems and throws me out of my document..

And for instance, if I'm typing here on MT Stars and I don't want Shorthand to work at all, do I have to pull up the Shorthand box and uncheck AutoReplace, or is there a quick keystroke that acts as a toggle?

How does one temporarily disable expansions

How do you disable pop-up blocker in browser?
Thanks
yes, need to disable your expansions in Word and...

you also need to open ShortCut BEFORE you open your platform (Word or whatever you are using).

Good luck.

You should disable call-waiting because if you are....
doing a low-speaking doc and have the volume up high, you'll blow your ear drums out. On the other hand, if that is your only line, what if someone from work needs to get in touch with you? As far as losing the job you're working on, it would depend on how the system is set up and whether or not the work is assigned to you or in a pool. I'm not sure if the phone has a "hold" button or not. It's been a while since I used one but I had 2 lines so it wasn't a problem. Good luck.
It is best to disable the call waiting
so you have less interruptions as it can be annoying but I don't think it will mess up the dictation. Also, may want to look into getting voice mail through phone company rather than your own answering machine if you don't already have that so you don't miss any important calls. My set up is such that all unanswered calls go to voice mail.
can you disable laptop keyboard?,

i thought i remembered seeing on these boards that to hook up a peripheral keyboard to a laptop, you have to disable the laptop one? i cannot find info when i try to search...if so, how do you do it?

many thanks.

Yes, if it's enabled. You can disable Insert key and still turn on overtype.

Have to disable Norton Internet Sec & Del all Temp files every time, why???
I cannot get the links to stay but I know it has to be due to something in Norton because if I disable Norton Internet Security and then go to Tools, Internet Options, choose General tab, then Temporary Files, Delete Files, Delete all off line content, and hit okay, then I get them back, but they don't stay consistently. :(

Can anyone tell me what needs to be changed/added in Norton's Internet Security to keep the links/forums available in the blue/on the left side??? I have tried everything I can think of. I sure would appreciate your help.

TIA.

It's really not a great idea to disable Windows updates. Just because updates are scheduled to be
installed, does not mean 7.0 will be automatically installed on your pc.  You will always receive a notification when installing anything other than critical updates, which 7.0 is not.
go to chat room on web site and find out. i'm working but if you find out, let me know.
creepy dude.
*70 will disable call waiting unless you are expecting a call and want it on (nm)

I find that if I ....sm

get over-tired I'll have more problems with palpitations than when I'm well rested.  I also have them more if I've been taking in more caffeine.  While these palpitations are harmless they are annoying, aren't they?

So find a new job already
It's your own fault if you stay and put up with it.  Complaining doesnt change a thing. Find a new job, we have all done it!
Did they say why? Did you ask? Did you go find another job?

Got me, but when you find out
please let me know too. I've had that in the past and it's freaky. The phone company couldn't even tell me where they came from!
find it odd??
There are many countries world-wide including Cuba and Iran that have offered help.  Many celebs have pledged millions too.
Can't find out anything.
If I hear "Corporate says" one more time, my head will explode. It's like they lost the ability to think on their own and are robots. makes me mad

other listings for MT jobs besides this site and mtjobs.com?  i'd even be interested in things outside of mt as long as i can do it from home.....need to change to something better soon - like yesterday!

 TIA!

I got into this because I could not find a job elsewhere. sm
And I found I was good at it, but I have always wanted out, though I have been here 25 years (needs of the family outweighed my "wants").

I think in my next life I want to be a government assassin or something like that.
Where do you find a job like that?

Who says she HAS to find another man?

I firmly believe that the girl doesn't have to get the guy at the end in order for there to be a happy ending.

Her husband can still be a good dad to his daughter without the two of them being married.  If she is unhappy and the situation isn't good for her other child, she should seriously consider leaving.  Just my opinion.

Once you find it...

Even after you find it, you will pay $25 to have the entries added to SpeedType - AND after already paying nearly $200 for the program.  I found that ridiculous.  The included instructions for adding the entries yourself do not work, so you are rather forced to have them do it for you.  Personally, I think that is a bit of a rip off.  I still have SpeedType sitting here unused, because I told them the fee was just not right, and they should include instructions that work!

Gosh, that didn't help much.

how do i find one of those?

oh well, just some of them need to find...N/M

IF they really have to, then they should find
a humane way to do it. I have a feeling though that it wasn't something that was necessary to begin with.

Also, because it was mentioned, even animals raised for food consumption have feelings, are smart, etc. In my eyes, a cow is no different than a dog....it's just what everyone has been raised as acceptable.

If any animals have to die though, it needs to be done humanely. If you want to see some things that are barbaric, go visit a slaughter house, a chicken farm or fur farm right here in our own country. We are no different. We are just not running around in the streets with clubs in our hands.
