For Pete's sake, if you're too sick to work,

call in sick!!
This past week I've had chronic sinus drainage and a nagging, constant cough that has kept me up most of the night. Felt okay during the day,(although typing speed decreased significantly). Was able to take cat naps off and on during the day to make up for lack of sleep, otherwise,I wouldn't have hesitated to take a day or two off.
If I'm "really" sick,I call in for a sick day without hesitation!!

For Pete's sake, you're not terminating a pregnancy, you're just typing a report after the
It's already been done before you even hear about it, and NOTHING changes regardless of whether you or someone else types it. Sheesh.
For Pete's sake!!!
English is our official language. People should speak English fluently before even being hired for a job here unless it is of course labor, but even those people should be required to be in school learning English before being promoted to anything that has any level of responsibility!! I agree with the original poster and that does not make me a bigot. I am married to a Mexican and have half Mexican children but my husband was in school learning English when we were dating and I could type his dictations all day long if he were a doctor because he learned it fluently or I wouldn't have married him!! It gripes the heck out of me when I hear MTs make excuses for these people, and I am not talking about all foreigners. I am talking about the ones who speak such horrible English that it does not even sound like English and I would say after 9 years of doing this that equals about 2/3rds of them!! They should not even be allowed to practice medicine here. Would you want one of them operating on you?? Come on let's get real here!! Even my husband agrees so don't be calling anyone bigots when we are just being honest and real!! Also, if I were a business owner which I have been in the past I would never hire someone who did not speak English that is unintelligable and then I would probably be sued for discrimination, what a joke!! Don't you people realize that they are also affecting our business community, our economy??? Businesses cannot operate when there is bad communication or miscommunication, etc. Haven't you had things messed up because of getting an Indian on the phone from New Delhi and having to force them to put someone else on the line that can understand what you are even saying?? I had a plane reservation messed up for my 15 year old daughter flying across country because of a man screwing it all up because he did not speak well enough English to understand what I was saying. I won't name the airline but you never reach an English as a FIRST language speaking person and I will NEVER fly with them again!! People this is not just about our jobs, this actually can be dangerous!! I ALSO have discontinued all business with any of the other companies I did business with previously who when I call are Indian. That is a whole different issue though, the outsourcing, but they both gripe the heck out of me and it has nothing to do with them personally. I love everyone equally. I don't care what nationality they are, but you have to look at this practically not emotionally......
For Pete's sake, let it go

Seriously.  Let it go.  See my post above re paranoid nuts.

I use that phrase all the time and my African American girlfriends call me Casper I'm so white.

Oh, for Pete's sake, just hire another MT...sm
to cover the account if you want to take a vacation. If you are working as an IC, you should be able to pay more than enough to make it worth her while. Ideally, you get enough work to hire one more person to work with you, and the two of you work together to cover off times and sick days. Honestly, can't anyone think their way out of a paper bag?
Oh for Pete's sake! Had Internet access long?
sheesh
It's CHINA for Pete's sake, where they still kill girl babies. Do you think
they have some sort of dog euthanasia patrol of paid government employees?  Puhleeeze yourself.
HIPAA is a joke, The majority of reports go to 3rd world countries, for pete's sake. nm

For goodness sake, if you're going to drag the Bible into it
you might read the part about man being created separately in God's image. In the Old Testament, there are distinctly different punishments for killing a man and killing a beast. Now, no doubt God loves animals and they will be in heaven, but I can assure you, God has not created man and animal on the same level.
DocShuttle - yea, I know, you're all sick of me saying it but
it is the best when it comes to working with clients who are not savvy with FTP sites, etc. You can configure it with the Olympus recorders so it is ALL done automatically. Dock the recorder, and it will take the files, erase the old ones, import to DocShuttle, post to the ftp site, take off finished work from ftp site and bring back to doc. All automatically. Also DocShuttle will allow you to set parameters so that each account can only access their own folders. It has reports that will give you the line counts of all the transcription done in a month. It tracks reports and assigns names. It shows status of account, if it is being worked on or ready for QA. Now you might not need this if you are working with a single offfice. In that case I think I might just use something like FTPSurfer to send files back and forth. Email me if you want. We can talk over some different options depending on your needs.
I work for Warminster at MQ and I am sick to death of being jerked around with no work all the time.
I would like a job where I can depend on the work and it does not seem to be in this office of MQ.
You're welcome. I am just so sick and tired of factless sound bites

Sick of no work
In the past 9 hours, I have been able to get 300 lines.  I have been out of work all day.  Every new job I get, same problem.  Where does it end?  How does one pay bills like this?
That is SICK! That IS sweatshop work!
causing this profession to go to the dogs.  They want perfect work, super-fast turnaround, want you to be at their beck and call (even if you are an IC) yet pay you a 'wage' that is only enough to purchase a few groceries with your check.  Forget paying for rent, car payment, health insurance, electricity, etc.  You can only really make money if you have great dictators, use a lot of normals or templates or are able to use word Expanders to the fullest.  Otherwise, your best bet is to get your own accounts.  4cpl is sick.
That is exactly what I meant. Evil for the sake of evil, not for the sake of satan
who is the essence of evil in Christianity. Call evil what you want it exists in every nation and every culture.

Having said that, did not the terrorists call America the Great Satan after their attack on 9/11?
Thanks. I'm sick that PRD may not work. Stedman's new spellcheck looks like it will

tell you I'M SICK OF COMPUTERS?  Well, I'M SICK OF COMPUTERS!

My clients hold the work for me. Of course, I rarely take off unless I'm sick. What's a vacati

I have one client for 11 years, another one for 15 years. They wait...they don't want anyone else doing their work. Are they spoiling me or am I spoiling them? My vacations consist of a 2 day fishing trip. One day to the site, 1/2 day fishing, and back home again.

If I'm sick, they understand. I still do the work, but at a pace that won't make me sicker. I sually catch up in a couple days.

Can you give us a hint you work for? I'm sick of cherry pickers too
You just know they are giving you all the crap they dont want.
Well, you're all complaining that accounts are current and work is low, so, gee, maybe they're
focusing on WORK, as in CLIENT and transcribing, as maybe half of you should be focusing on!!
I AM SICK, SICK, SICK AND TIRED

Of bad dictators and QA that takes up for them!!!!  I am sick to death of:

1.  Doc saying paragraph after every sentence.

2.  Docs never dictating the first name of doc they are writing to.

3.  QA asking us to insert certain sentences in certain places for certain doctors who do not dictate them.

4.  Docs wanting their own specific headings but not dictating them.

5.  Docs who ramble, never saying period.

6.  QA asking us to **fix** their grammer, mistakes, fragmented sentences, and verb tenses and sometimes when we do, we are docked points for **not transcribed as dictated.**

7.  QA not wanting anything sent to them, stating **researach medical terms and facilities you are not familiar with.**  If they are not there to help us out, what are they doing there????

8.  Docs, NPs, and PAs who do not know how to dictate, pronounce, or spell.

9.  QA asking us to use BOS, but not knowing it themselves.

10.  Doing work I do not get paid for.

Before QA became involved, in years gone by, if a doc's dictation was awful - then that is what he got for transcription and more times than not, they would straighten up and make a better effort.  Not now - we or QA has to almost do the dictation for them!!  They are the ones with the medical degree - not us.  What happened to us just transcribing what is dictated.  Why can't they be responsible for what prints out??  If someone could let them know how much trouble their dictation style causes, it would cut my transcription time in half.  My list could go on and on.  It is a terrible time to be thinking about getting out of the business, but if this crap keeps up - I have to give it some serious consideration.  The job just AIN'T what it used to be.

Pete's Pond
I like that site too, but don't think it is *live* yet and is still a taped video. Here is another one you may like that is live...

I think Pete's Pond is up and running again...can anyone..sm
tell me how to have this play so I can watch it while working?  I did it last year but can't remember how I did it!  Thanks.
You're lucky they work for you. I've never gotten a refill to work right, ever.

I hate to hear that. She was great in Pete's Dragon

Oh, for Heaven's sake -
nm
I would do it again for my kids' sake, but sm
not because I enjoy it. If I could ever figure out what else I could do at home as a professional of some sort (rather than selling something), I'd be back to school to do it.
For heaven's sake! It's not THAT bad!
You can go to CareerStep, one of the "top 3" schools for about $1,600, and if you work at it you should be able to finish it in 9-12 months. As for purchasing equipment, you'll get a foot pedal with your course and Express Scribe (the software you'll use to actually transcribe) is free. You will have to buy a few reference books and some fairly cheap software--that all shouldn't run you more than $400-$500, tops. I'm assuming you already have a computer, or else how could you have posted this note?

Now, there are jobs being taken over by software and being outsourced to other countries. And there ARE doctors who dictate TERRIBLY. But there are still some decent jobs out there and decent doctors as well. If you work at it and sell yourself well, you should do okay. Good luck!
For Heaven's sake... don't do what I did!
I accepted a position with another company, turned in my resignation when I received the acceptance letter from the other company.  Friday will be my last day on the job, and I have not heard from the other company as to downloading software on computer and my first day is supposed to be Monday.  My employer has already hired someone in my place, so I can't ask for my old job back. The past several days I've sent out about 5 or so resume's to various companies.
for sanity's sake
I have been an MT/homeschooling mom for 7 years now. I work from 5:30am-9am and then from 7-10pm. We school from 9-12:30. I actually sit with my kids the whole time. They will do reading and some independent work in the evening(homework). From 1-5 is our park time, ballet, karate, etc. Fridays we have off for co-ops, field trips, and errands. This works great for us. Try finding a homeschool support group in your area so that you can get more involved. Your kids need it also. I am in Florida and here kids are allowed to participate in public and private school extracurricular activities. If you have older kids this may be a good option for them as well. But by finding a support group it will give you some interaction.
Please, just for my own sake, what money
do you think you would make as opposed to what you make per week now? Give me a ball park figure on your salary, do you work full or part and I will get back with you on this and let you know what I make doing VR, ok?
And for heaven's sake....

don't dictate in the bathroom.  That's waaaaaay more than we want to hear!

Oh for pity's sake
How about Americans get used to the fact that their country is a mixture of different peoples/culture/languages and try just a little harder to understand and be understood?

Or would that interfere too much with the American Arrogance factor? :)
Glad you have your own space for your sake SM
Lots to discuss and now you can do it without us peering over your shoulder and commenting right and left. :) Good luck to all of you!
For heaven's sake, where is your lawyer?
Your divorce is final in 2 weeks, and you're asking this super important question to MTs on a message board? PLEASE ask your lawyer.
For Cripee's sake! The question was
whether she had to work on the holidays if asked to do so. IF this person even had the slightest idea of what being an IC meant, he/she would never EVER have had to ask a bunch of strangers what she had to do! Basic running-your-own business 101. The IC is the one who calls the shots. Does The Donald ask his cooking staff if he has to work on Christmas? Does a CEO call his secretary and ask if he should work? ICs are ICs - the entire point is that YOU are your own boss and call the shots - not vice versa. Thus the danger to our industry for the REAL ICs - those who are so ignorant of this basic business practice are nothing more than employees, allowing the doctors to slack and not pay taxes, etc. And that is the antithesis of being an IC.
Oh for heaven's sake...if she knew how to...
do that, she wouldn't have a question!  Anyway, what platform do you use?  Most of the time you will find a folder in the "My Documents" folder or in the hard drive (go to "My Computer" and click on your hard drive--usually C:) by the same name as your platform.  Inside that folder will be your templates.  When you get there, you can press Ctrl and F together.  A screen will come up asking what you want to search for.  Click "All files and folders".  Where it says "All of part of the file name:" put "*.dot" (without the quotes).  This will find all of the templates within that folder.  Hope this helps.
It was a joke for goodness sake. Get a sense of

What's the problem?  You don't like jokes, you feel the need to defend George, or someone steal your thunder?  Sheesh.

For goodness sake, this has nothing to do with MQ it is about a totally different company I am
looking into. Geez.
Get marital counseling for the sake of your children.
You probably could stay there your entire life and manage but the kids deserve better.
Oh, for Heaven's sake - if you don't like it just don't reply. Grow up.
nm
Oh, for cripes' sake. I just voted Thumbs Down
I guess you have to vote Thumbs Up to get the 10 votes to have it removed (Reason drop-down: Solicitation of business, or something like that ... I can't vote again now to see what it was)
You're 100% right! And where we work - (sm)
(and what we wear!) should have NO bearing whatsoever on whether or not we're considered 'professionals'.

I think the reason the MT industry has gotten out of the hands of MTs and hospitals, and into the hands of plain old businessmen, is because, since we're a mostly 'invisible' workforce, they could see countless cracks and loopholes they could take advantage of when it came to cheating the workers (and the laws in this country) and making more profit for themselves.

I caught something on TV last night speaking about the "equal value" laws some states have, when it comes to the disparity between men's and women's pay. Certain jobs were awarded point systems to determine their worth to an employer. One example was secretaries (women) vs. the building's heating/AC/etc. maintenance workers (mostly men). They each were worth 100 points. Yet the men made twice what the women did, and worked fewer hours on average.

Considering what MTs are expected to know (especially according to AHDI/AAMT), I wonder what our point-value would be compared to, say - a paralegal, or a paramedic, or an executive secretary, etc. (Probably not the best comparisons, but all I can think of at the moment). The only difference between us and them is where we work. They're on-site & highly visible; we are off-site and totally invisible. (How many of us have ever even met our bosses or supervisors face-to-face? Very few, indeed). But does that make an MT worth less? NO. Only in the eyes of the tunnel-visioned doctors, dictating away and aware only of their own jobs, or the hospital CEOs trying to bolster their own worth to their institutions by cutting transcription costs (many of them don't even quite know what transcription even IS), and worst of all, the owners of large MTSO's, who in large part these days are simply businessmen or women who bought the company because they felt they could turn a huge profit with it by underpaying its workers, and most of whom have never been an MT a single day in their lives.
I think you're all wrong. It's all about getting the work done
for the hospital in the fastest time possible and my company doesn't care if I do it or if you do it (if you worked for us) or if someone else does it, just get it done for the client. So complain as you like, find somewhere else to work if you need, but get the work done. That's the bottom line.
Look at what you're using now as far as ports for work. sm
You'll need to get a laptop that has the same kinds of ports. If you're using all USB, you're in luck because most new computers only have USB. If you're using a serial foot pedal, consider buying an model just off lease that has that port. There has been such a problem where I work because they don't have USB capabilities in their software yet and so their serial foot pedal does not work with newer laptops even with adapters from serial to USB.

I just bought off lease a Dell and made sure it had all the ports I wanted, including a parallel port because that's the foot pedal I have. The laptop was built in 2002, has over 1 gig of RAM, all the updates for Windows XP and it works just fine for me.
I understand what you're going through. I work both myself. sm
I have been IC for several years, and thought I might go back to employee for benefits.  But I found the insurance was so high, and the pay was not as good, so I work both part time now.  The bottom line is, I can't give up the freedom I've had in the last several years.  I am given so much work in the morning, and have all day to finish it, and I love this system.  I tried to set a schedule for my part-time employee job, thinking I would like to go to full time if it worked out.  But I had too much trouble making myself fit a schedule (they have offered to let me work when I can, so I'm still keeping the job, but if I can't do it right, I will quit).  Unfortunately, when you get used to IC, it is hard to fit back in a "box."  Maybe you could look for a company that would allow you some flexibility in your schedule, say an 8-hour window to work 6 hours.  If you have the experience, some companies will work with you that way.  I don't think IC is a dead end, it is just a little harder to manage.  But the benefits did not pan out.  I can get the insurance cheaper individually, the pay was lower so I could actually put a little back as an IC every pay period and take time off "paid."  The only thing I miss is what they pay for taxes (I think 7% or so), and having someone else do these things for me.  If you like IC as I do, try setting up your own retirement plan, getting your own insurance, and put a little back each pay period for some time off.  Good luck with your decision.
You're RIGHT, & many of us *need* to work at home
:(
How does income tax work when you're IC?
I was offered a position from a company as an IC, and the contract had a clause about being responsible for your own tax deductions, etc. As I have only ever been an employee, I am not entirely sure how this works. If you are IC how do you pay taxes? Thanks!
I've had a sniffler - blow your nose for heaven's sake!

You're lucky. I get lots of work but have

You're right! I wouldn't work for a company that SM
expected me to surf all over the world just because some prima donna didn't want to be bothered with proper dictation.
