I've been an MT since 1978 and the MT world revolved quite nicely in the days when we were all in-house and given credit for having a brain and being able to figure out how to compose a coherent paragraph with the crap dictation we were given to work with. QA never existed then and everything was just fine. No lawsuits that I can recall, so this is just more red-tape nitpicking on the part of the at-home services to kiss the client's butt and make them think they're getting something special.

I think that probably the easiest solution for those companies is to just hire employees. When it comes to trying to meet client TATs, scheduling shifts, etc., ICs are mainly a pain, anyway.

However, I worked on-site and only made $25,000.00 after 17 years, started at $7.00 an hour.  So, the ones who say they made $75,000.00 are not giving you all of the facts.


The realm of an MT per hour is from 13-17 an hour; look it up.  It's true.  However, if you have your own accounts (which I do), I charge more per line and have templates set up so that I breeze through my dictators that I've done for the past 10 years, which yields me around 25-30 an hour.  These circumstances are not common, I know that now. 


I think you're doing great!  Keep up the good work!  I'm not here to blast ya'!  You are the wave of the future; no MT will get rich and never have been rich. 


I think some of us who have been in this profession though see that it's tough to raise rates at this time because of the fear of losing the account to a large company.  I'm just a small guy, I don't require much really, so I'm happy with what I make.  I also love being at home full-time.  I'm able to manipulate my schedule and not feel so "hum-drum."  I learn something new every day, not all pretty either, but I've learned more specialties working online than on-site. 


At this point in my life (I'm in my 30s), this profession suits me just fine.  Advice to new MTs, give it a whirl!  You may be surprised that you really can make some money if you just relax and stop listening to the "nay-sayers."  As a matter of fact, I have never done VR, but think it would be interesting.  If pretty much everything is there, then all the better; this may be another good way for a new MT to break into the business and learn is with the VR...

It is the on-site jobs that gets ya' out there....  Some docs are just great payers and know good work when they see it.  I think they like local because you are familiar with all of the things that go into that report, i.e., referring physicians, facilities, diagnostic centers, etc.  It saves them the headache of correcting all of those mistakes.


My own personal PCP has complained to me in an office visit about the local hospital that uses an outside service and can never get his name right.  The problem is that the physicians are not the ones making the decisions, it is the hospitals that make those decisions as far as in the hospital environment.  I know physicians at the hospital that I worked at that were p'od when they found out we would no longer be transcribing their reports.  They were just so set in their ways and they got good TAT and a good quality report - but no more, and yes I still to this day hear terrible feedback about the outsourced company and how the doctors spend countless hours correcting things.  End of Story...  {sigh}

I've had editors tell me that they love getting my reports with blanks because they know they can go directly to the blank and try to fill it in, they say some MTs they have to almost completely re-type the report which takes more time than typing it in the first place.  I know this to be true from my own editing.  I tried to work with the MTs if they could be salvaged.  If they still insisted on not doing their job, I did my job until they were relieved of their work duties.  :)

Rules and standards are necessary but they should be uniform. ''Rules'' cannot be followed when they are arbitrary--the individual preferences or whims of whatever QA person gets the report. Great posts!

A tech support person who used to work for a certain company I used to work for...well, we knew one another before and after we both quit, he gave me the scoop on what these companies do. It is underhanded and deceitful and downright dishonest. that is why I do NOT trust NOT ONE MTSO anymore....they are all dishonest......I don't care how good a company is stated to be on any board.

All they care about is the mighty dollar...the owners of all of these companies....they are getting richer and richer and some of us are one foot away from being homeless.

I have no respect for any of these companies, nada, zero.....

BUT - you have to do your own or have somebody knowledgeable do it for you. You really have to know what you're doing and understand it. The 5% that I don't get right is because of "pilot error" - screwed up on the math - AGAIN!!!

Online dating also falls into the desperate category. If someone doesn't want to meet people the conventional, in-person way, they have to be:

1. Socially challenged.
2. Facially challenged.
3. Vertically challenged.
4. Weight challenged.

There are a lot of people out there who do that kind of thing and that's their choice, but I'd rather meet face to face instead of trolling the computer from behind a monitor looking for goofs that no one in the real world would want.

You read my post ABSOLUTELY correct. Supervisors don't need my appreciation nor
do I need their's.  We all just want to get paid if you are honest.  I don't have time to worry if I am appreciated by MQ.  I just want them to pay me for an honest day's work.  I guess that shows they like me, they really, really like me.  Talk is cheap.  I get it all the time from MQ CEO/management, how much I am appreciated.  I just want to paid for my time and don't want to hear all the talk.  I mean who really cares.  So if they appreciate me and don't pay me for my efforts, what do I do with this "appreciation"?  Bank it?

I have to wonder about compatibility issues and what operating system or platform it is being used on.  If the platform is proprietary even if it uses Word, it may be a stripped version of Word.  If that is the case, this would make ST not act properly as it was only intended to work with an full version of Word...that is what makes me keep coming back to it not working properly with Word.  If you have to correct things on Tools, it is a compatibility issue with Word.


The only known issue I was aware of was that once Stedman took over ST and Word went to 2003, ST has expansion and crashing issues because of an upgrade that Word made causing compatibility issues within ST.


My best advice is to go directy to customer service or perhaps locate B. Grow and ask her advice.

Drizzle the cake mix, I use German chocolate cake mix, with cream cheese and a box of powdered sugar, melted together, and the cake cracks and the cream cheese mixture mixes in the middle...oh my goodness...to die for!!!
I've made in the $50s and $60s for nationals.
I know 5 MTs, good personal friends, who make considerably more than I do...all on production...all at the top 2 nationals.

Back when I was starting out as an MT, I worked with an older woman who was an ART and told me if I ever wanted to earn those credentials, she would mentor me.  That's all you had to do was sort of do an apprenticeship with a mentor and then you could take the test.


Now, if you want your RHIT, you HAVE to complete a RHIT education program.  That's one of the hesitations for me in trying for my RHIT.  I'm not sure I want to commit to full-time school!


You can take the CCS exam for coding without a formal education just as long as you have work experience in HIM and transcription counts.

It is so easy to use. Daughter is in the High School band, so we've taken a ton of pictures of the band kids over the past 2 years, always get compliments. So good that the band teacher just bought a Kodak for himself. Very easy to e-mail, print pictures. I have great action shots with mine. Just one tip, if you're planning on using the night-time feature, be sure to get a tripod. You really need to be steady for that. You will be very happy.

I've made a decision to leave MT...

And to pursue my RN degree...I've had quite enough of being treated as a 2nd class worker...enough!!! I'm tired of paying for xxxx doctor's mistakes. I'm tired of being "talked" to by "supervisors and QA" who know even less than I do. And basically, I'm tired of making squat for wages while I work my fingers to the bone...


So, anyone done this transition before? I'm sure there are some out there who have and have been quite successful at it.  If so, I'd love some words of encouragement. Unfortunately, I'm stuck doing this junk until I'm done with school, which will probably be a few years......but hey, I've done it this long, what's a few more, huh?

I've been at it for 30+ years. 'Back in the day', I too made
about $42,000/year (gross). But the accounts keep getting crappier, and the pay keeps going lower. Meanwhile, I saw gas a $4.10/gallon on the interstate Sunday evening, and I'm slowly becoming a forced vegetarian because I can no longer afford to buy meat or fish.

Meanwhile, the suits at the big hospitals that whine about a 1-cpl increase in the cost of MT have six-(and some seven)-figure incomes.

Previous posters are 100% correct. Here's what I've learned...
There have been a lot of very good points brought out here, and I encourage you to consider the advice that has been offered and think this over very, very carefully before making a decision.

I've been in this business since 1996. I went to school (with 3 small children at home), studied at 4 a.m., maintained another full-time job, earned a 4.0, was lucky enough to get a part-time job in MT before I even graduated. I excelled at MT, loved the work and have worked my way up to the top. It has been a lucrative career for me and I've had the chance to stay at home with my kids while they were young (and I still work at home and enjoy being here for my junior high and high school age kids.)

HOWEVER, times have changed. I'm an MT instructor at a local college. We made the decision to drop the MT program because we simply cannot place new grads. I don't care how smart you are, how good your grades are, how much potential you have or how motivated you are--it's very, very difficult, if not impossible, to get a job working at home as a new grad. (Finding a job in a clinic is a little easier, but still difficult.)

If you are one of the few who are lucky enough to find a job working at home as a new grad, you will make next to nothing for at least the first year. New grads are NOT prepared to meet production quotas, they still need mentoring, and they still have a tremendous amount to learn. Most jobs, especially working at home jobs, are production based. As a new grad you will spend most of your time researching, and your production will be minimal; therefore, so will your salary. In addition, most work-at-home jobs have production quotas. Meeting a quota when you are still in the learning phase leads to a tremendous amount of pressure, which in turn, leads to frustration and is not conducive to learning and retaining information.

My first boss (the one who hired me as a new grad) gave me some words of wisdom that I haven't forgotten. She said that transcribing at home with small children NEVER works under any circumstance. Either the work will suffer or the parenting will suffer. I, of course, thought I would be the exception. (My kids were age 2, 4, and 9 at the time.) She had 25 years of experience as an MT and as an MTSO owner, and she was absolutely right. I learned quickly that I could be successful working PART-TIME with small children, but trying to do it full-time defeated the purpose. When you are transcribing, you may be physically "at home," but if you are doing a good job, your mind is tuned in to your work, not your kids. Constant interruptions lead to low production, errors, and huge frustration. I found that I could work a few hours in the early morning before they woke up, fit in a few hours throughout the day and finish up late at night after they were in bed. I was in a position at that time not to need a full-time income, so this was a nice compromise, and it prepared me for full-time work later on when they were all in school. I consider that period of time an extension of my training.

Like another poster said, I do not want to rain on your parade, but tuition is not cheap. (I'm STILL paying off a student loan.) Additionally, MT is not an "easy" curriculum to learn, and it takes a certain skill set and personality type in order to excel and succeed. You will invest a lot of time, money, and effort just in the process of completing your training. It may or may not be worth it in the long run. Career college admissions reps are paid on a commission basis; therefore, they don't always give you the "rest of the story." Those of us who have posted here today are trying to give you "the rest of the story," and our intention is not to discourage you but rather to give you an accurate picture of what MT is truly like, not what the admissions counselor might have told you.

If you do decide to go forward, go with your eyes wide open. I would also encourage you to find a mentor who can advise you along the way.
I've said it before and I'll stay it again, there is absolutely no added worth to being a CMT.

It is a waste of nearly $300 and it serves little or no purpose.  You maybe get a penny more a line from a handful of services.  That's it.  Does it sound like it's worth it to you?


Furthermore, you'd be giving your hard earned money to an organization that advocates offshoring American MT jobs.  They even recently were asking American MTs to volunteer their time and pay their way on a $4000 trip to China to train the Chinese to take our jobs. 


Then there is the whole problem with the ever-changing BOS.  Just when we learn their rules, they go and change them on us and make us all pay 90 bucks for the newest edition. 


Uhem, sorry.  This subject tends to get me fired up.  The short answer would be -- No, it isn't worth it at all.

They would never be successful in getting that legislation passed. There are more MTs who could probably pass their exam but won't take it because of the ridiculous cost. Plus, doesn't one lose their "CMT" status if they don't pay their AAMT dues? More ridiculous drek. I know of more former coworkers as MTs who have been in the career for 30+ years and NEVER considered becoming certified. A stupid cliqish group.

My son is applying for PreMed, has 4.0 GPA, passed all AP exams with a 4, but the colleges will take "other than Caucasian" with lower GPA and lower test scores, etc. Discrimination is rampant in USA of White Americans. It is nauseating to say the least!

You tell me - can we help it if we are smarter, work harder, etc? It is not our fault that we were born "white." Can't believe it has come to this in America!

That's correct . . . this process is necessitated by HIPAA. It's related to protecting patient information.

If you think this is some employer control thing, you're dead wrong. It's a security and privacy requirement mandated by federal regulation, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

Do you know what the fine is for disclosure of personally-identifiable patient information? If not, you're not keeping up with the industry.

Would you want YOUR name and insurance information leaked out? So someone could use it? Do you know what medical identity theft is? If not, you're not keeping up.

If you do not know about this, then your employers are not providing adequate employee training. If you're self-employed, then you are not providing yourself with enough continuing education.

This is a serious issue. It has nothing to do with trying to hamper productivity, pay you less, or interfere with your life. It is, in fact, one reason the largest user of MT services in the country just banned offshoring and are looking to return to in-house MTs only.

This is a non-problem. If you want to check your email and do research on the net, just do your part to protect your clients' patients and get a laptop.

I've never made a negative comment about newbies.
I always try to help out whenever I can. It's not easy to work from home. The matchbook schools and scam ads have people believing they can do something that is a bit more complicated than just taking a correspondence course and immediately knowing everything you need to be successful in this career field.

Believe me, I was desperate to work from home, too, because daycare costs were phenomenal. I started out transcribing TV shows for a media company at first. Then I did worker's comp and insurance letters for a small MTSO on the east coast at $.05 per line. They liked my work and transitioned me to clinic SOAP notes. As for working in-house doing transcription, I worked in an office for ONE WEEK before they allowed me to go home. If I can do it, so can you. It may take some searching, but persistence pays off. That's being proactive. Venting here on the boards and accusing people of things they didn't do are being reactive.

Ya'll be happy being categorized as typists and making your $8.00 to 11.00 an hour. Unbelievable you would justify this...simply unbelievable.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I've seen quite a few names, first and last, of people
mgmt on this board in the past, in similar situations, which is why I felt I could post this question. I certainly don't think I was not being tactful to the people I asked about, as I complimented them and enjoyed working with them. I wouldn't mind my name being on this board if someone said something nice about me.

I worked with a woman who claimed to be a medical transcription instructor, 20 years experience, so on and so on. Get this - she could not understand a simple line of "the lungs are clear to auscultation." I AM NOT LYING ON THIS!!

I cannot tell you THE COUNTLESS NUMBER of transcriptionists that get an attitude about needing to take a transcription test when they have X-number of years experience, but you know what?? I would say a little less than half of the "prima donnas" that had this attitude, could not transcribe for beans!! I worked with a company that had travelers that sent out transcriptionists that had the prima donna attitudes, and again, their transcription could KILL A PATIENT!!! They didn't care. They were doing it for the line count to make the money. One woman if made up crap just to get extra lines.
