We could use local newspapers? TV?
I just noticed that my local newspaper has an "opinion poll" section. I wonder if we could write to them and have them do the polling for us? Maybe along with a little story?
Anyone out there deliver newspapers?

Just wondering if I'm the only crazy fool.  My younger son took on a paper route and then lost interest.  I helped him with it for a while.  My older son used to do the same route and it became available again.

I'd been trying to get motivated to walk in the morning and would always turn the alarm off.  When I helped my younger son,  I saw him counting his cash and thought "okay, I walk for an hour every morning and make $85.00  or more a week while I'm doing this."

Only drawback is that it is 7 days a week 364 days a year (no paper at Christmas) and you have to be up at 4:30 a.m. When my older son did the route, he would get over $500 in Christmas tips.

Maybe I'm trying to convince myself to keep it up?  I do know that I feel great and am in much better shape than I was even a few weeks ago.

All you paper "boys" out there get back to me.

Exactly! The newspapers all say that the grocery stores are open.
Why are people in expensive cars waiting in line for free stuff then? There are 2,800 people staying in shelters that NEED to be helped for truly being victims of the storm rather than for being "victims" of lack of planning or preparedness. Believe me, we're not without compassion. We do care. However, people 50 or 100 years ago didn't sit back on their laurels waiting for others to do for them.
agree! the difference between the newspapers and tabloids.
would like to add to that - helping you to hopefully "become a self-reliant thinker."

Deliver newspapers. I do. Good $$$, great exercise.

I do approximately one hour each morning (walking).  This past week I made $160 tax free  for 7 hours of "exercise." :)

My theory is why get up early and walk the dog when you can walk the dog and make money while you're at it.

My sister and her husband did a motor route together and made $500+ a week.

And the Christmas tips?  CHA CHING!!!  I made almost $600 last year with 65 customers.  My sister and her husband made close to $2000.00.

Its actually becoming popular!
It started locally in a Chicago ball park I think, and they had a segment on CBS news the other day about it. They cut the donut in half and use those two halves as the buns, along with bacon and cheese. Everyone they interviewed said they really liked it, even the reporter! Kind of sweet and sour cheeseburger, don't U think?
Unless you want to work on site, that is. If so, check Manpower and the newspapers for starters. nm

This may not be a popular opinion, but I would be
If this is a child you're talking about, I would probably err on the side of protecting the child. A call can be placed to CPS anonymously, and you won't have to risk your job. You can simply call anonymously and state that during the performance of your job, this situation presented itself. If you've ever see the consequences sexual abuse brings to a child's life, then you would know it's worth much more than a job anyway.
I think it is here to stay, but won't be quite as popular as some companies may think

The whole reasoning behind VR is to decrease cost to clients and to speed up TAT (well that and to increase revenue for MTSOs).  But, just as more and more clients are starting to find out about offshore outsourcing, the cost effectiveness may not be such an advantage.  Being on VR for several months now, it seems like even the sloppiest work is submitted for the sake of getting it out quickly.  I've found, and it has been reported here repeatedly, that those on VR are told not to "pretty it up", just make sure it's accurate.  Even the banned abbreviations on the JHACO list are allowed in favor of quick editing.  Things that never would be acceptable in straight typing are allowed in VR.  Sooner or later this is going to catch up and the money saved on VR will just switch to risk management.  What once seemed like a big money saver will end up costing them more in the long run, just like outsourcing to India.

Also, it is a proven fact that those who are very high producers in straight typing (1500 to 1600 lines a day) will most likely not make the money that new MTs or less skilled MTs will.  Those who are producing approximately 1000 to 1100 lines a day will have no problem doubling that.  With some MTSOs cutting the VR editing rates to 55% of base line count, it isn't feasible for experienced, skilled high producers to work on VR at half the base rate. Thus, a lot of skilled MTs will be moving on to companies without VR.  Without some of the tools required, VR mandates that the editors will correctly use and spell terms that would otherwise be done by expanders.  A new MT isn't going to catch the "mistakes" as quickly or as often as a highly-skilled MT with years and years under the belt. That, too, will contribute to the lower quality of finished product. As far as increased TAT, it might increase it a little but full editing isn't as quick as QA editing, so the increase in TAT isn't going to be that dramatic IMO.

I can see VR being advantageous for the quicker, easier reports such as radiology and ER, and I can see it catching on for a while.  But, I think sooner or later it will trend back to the clients wanting professionalism over quick, money-saving efforts that will end up costing them more in the long run either in risk management or outright lawsuits.

Beading and knitting are popular
right now. I've been doing both separately and in combination for longer than I care to admit but they are *in* again. Glass mosaics and polymer clay are another couple of things I've been dabbling in for a while. There are just so many options, it's hard to suggest just 1 thing. Maybe you could take her on a *date* to some of the craft stores like Joanne Fabrics or Michael's and see what she seems interested in. If she finds the right hobby to suit her personality and talent, I predict she will be totally addicted (like so many of us) so watch out! Then again, she is lucky she has you to enable her. LOL Good luck!
It's so popular, too. Everybody is naming their kid Thusnelda. nm

I think acute care is more popular
I do both and as far as work I don't really favor one over the other. I get about the same lines with either one.
Outsourcing DMV story hit OC newspapers and everyone was outraged about losing jobs and private info
After the outrage regarding private information and loss of jobs concerning a California DMV sending their data entry to Mexico, this practice was stopped thanks to a radio show and media attention. We as transcriptionists have more info than DMV not to mention all the countless jobs going overseas. Where is the outrage on this when we need it?
Buy local. The local stores pay taxes to support your city and state. (SM)
Using online and catalogues does nothing to promote the local economy.  We complain about outsourcing and about the big companies gobbling up all the work so the jobs at local hospitals are gone, yet we do the same thing when we buy on ebay, catalog, and these web sites that may be located any place in the world as their primary business location.
Actually RadGuy wuz very popular when my mom named me that in 1958. Hmm...

So he was a Beatle, so he was popular and put out good music.
Marvelous, but he was no hero.  Idol, yes...hero, no.
Pretty kewl...like the "how popular is your name" thingy, too (nm)

I went local. Great local tech support, they know what I do and were able to set it up just for me

I am in a small town in Florida and I had one set up by a local one person company, cost me about 500 and he gave me a 5 year parts and labor warranty, I had a minor problem with it, I took it to his store and was back home in an hour - didn't have to have it shipped to me, didn't have to wait for "rebates" and would do it again any time.
would the local
mental health center be able to help? (if a child psychiatrist is not affordable) Might Social Services have a referral, or a crisis hot line possibly have referral information?

I think this child probably either has been exposed to visual porn in some form or is mentally ill.

Pray for them all too.
I have a local ISP (sm)
I have a local ISP so unless you live in the State of Michigan I am afraid this won't be much help to you. :) Here is the link anyway, just in case. :)

I would take the local job. sm
what is so nice about the local job is that you have the same dictators over and over.  You can use your expander/templates/macros, etc to get really fast on a local account and work less and make more.  Good luck.  The local jobs are the best IMO.
I do both. Go local. Luv my local job. nm

Hi there! If I did a local account for a hospital, would I still need a license? I know for the state I am in I would need one if I had accounts of my own. Thank you so much!
Need to look for something local, like
a small clinic or doctor's office to get your foot in the door and get some experience. Most larger places require experience, but some only a year or so, so see what you can find locally, even if PT, and start there.
Now you know the local job market and my
home situation better than I do.  For your information, I make more working parttime at home doing MT than I would working fulltime for any of the local advertising agencies.  Plus, I don't have to travel or put my kids in daycare.   Thank you so much for your concern about my employment situation, though.  And please, get off your
I went back to local. sm
Local companies are popping back up because people are getting fed up and going back to local.

I had horrible trouble with downtime with Adelphia, so I switched. Last time I talked to Adelphia I talked to a "rep" who was obviously in India, who asked if I was enjoying the snow.

Arst uz enjozinz' snowz!

It was May!

Now I can call and say "Yo, Eric, hows it going? Having a little trouble here."

I went to wireless and I have toooooo many trees. They trimmed branches for free and they also gave me free dial up backup, just in case, so I won't lose any money.

I have had them since May and I haven't lost a dime. I've lost the wireless on occasion, but I have the dialup to back me up.

With Adelphia, I had downtime sometimes for days. Still had to pay the ridiculous bill though!!!
I like my national (PT) but my local is the best.

With my local I know exactly what I'm in for and how long it's going to take me.  With my national, I can work hard at it and do the extra or just meet the requirement.

My local has picked up a ton of accounts so I may be able to find a national that doesn't have a "schedule requirement," i.e. 3 hours 4 days a week and one weekend day.

With my local, I can say, "Hey kids, not much work, let's go get ice cream?"  They like that, but they hate "Mom's gotta burn the midnight oil."

It's a trade off. I'm not complaining.  I burned my nylons in the fireplace last October and I don't miss them!

I have one local account that does that (sm)

I've gotten used to the fact that he'll do a 2 page report on an established who is being seen for a an earache.  He has to go through all of the other medical problems, review of systems, etc., instead of just saying something like medical history is in patient's chart.

The other doctor in the same practice will just do: Chief complaint: ear pain. Examination:  Left ear is red.  Assessment:  Otitis media.  Plan:  Amoxicillin.

The hospital and the practice have tried to get him to cut his notes down, but apparently he likes to hear himself talk.

No skin off my nose, I see that I have a tape for him and I sing, "I'm in the money!"

thank you, that is great to know...how do you know it is local?
what is the best way to tell?  we have a (small) butcher shop here, but I see the trucks pull in from all over, and they even have told me their meat is just ordered from all over.

Do you from a farm?  I live in WNY, and there are plenty of dairy and cow farms, but was not sure they would sell direct...

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I still will not eat meat, but my boyfriend does, and I have to make it every day...would feel much better if it was local...
I get it all the time. I have a local guy
who is amusing.  He addresses every report to me personally because he knows I'll be typing it.  Then he adds commentary and personal opinions.  "I don't what this yahoo was thinking.  G.D. idiot.  blah, blah  If you can figure this out, let me know."
Maybe get local accounts
I was lucky enough several years ago to hook up with a urology office that was expanding its practice. I did this at home for a long time. The pay was excellent and, of couse, only 5 doctors, so I got very used to doing them which increases your speed. Also, there was not all this looking up doctors from huge databases which really slows one down. Maybe you can check around your local city and find something like that. It doesn't hurt to try.  Good luck to you both!
If local co can be trusted, then go with them, but SM

will probably be more expensive. Again, they can probably customize it for you.

On the other hand, I just bought a Dell.

Get a local acct (sm)
The middle man is making money on your work. Cut out the middle man and you'll make more than $15 an hour.
I do not see how you can get around this with local accounts.
You are always going to run across patients that you know.  That is why confidentiality is so important.  Yes, I know things about people that sometimes I wish I did not know.  However, the people who work in my physician' s office know things about me that I wish they did not know.  My physician is a client of the service I work for, so I do not see any way around it.  In my opinion, typing reports is no different that actually working in the office with the patients.  You just have to keep your mouth shut.
Buying local ....
Unfortunately, some of us don't live in areas that have a lot of choice. My town is tiny and we have a teensy WalMart that has items that (I really think this!) have been there waiting to be sold since the day it opened years ago! I buy from JC Penney's from a catalog outlet here in town (if they're open) or online, sometimes I shop in one of the larger neighboring cities. Frankly, unless I'm buying cotton or watermelon, it ain't happening here :-).

However, in defense of your statement, when I lived in a larger city and had variety (and choices!) I did shop in town more often than not. I miss those days LOL.
Try "Airborne," an OTC from your local RX.

Call your local MD!
find a medical care provider, whomever is on call for your local MD, and do what they say. Once something lke this involves the head/neck/face, it can get hairy. And if it begins affecting his airway, there's hell to pay. Find someone medical to give you advice right away. Otherwise, he could end up on the floor, and you on the fone with 9-1-1.
You have 911. There are local hospitals
with free nurse referral lines. That's just for starters.

You just take the cake for stupidity with your original question and now your silly offended replies.
Local MTSO's here
only pay 6-8 cpl.  Some will not go higher than 7 cpl to start.  I was told by the owner of the company I work for now that she has had to cut some of her charges in order to get new accounts.
According the local people here I don't need one - sm
that is good enough for me. Rather not spend the money if I don't have to. I am sure if they were wrong, I will be hearing from them again. Thanks for the heads-up though. Are you in a city or a rural area (I am rural, King William County).
Local accounts

Contact local doctors so that they know you are available either by flyer, brochure or cold calls.   You cannot find a local account unless you contact potential clients.

My local vet went to Spain for
30 days, and it only cost her $11,000.  This covered air fare, all hospital and doctor bills, followups over there, the residence, everything.  She has lost weight and is happy she did it.  She said her medical insurance would not pay and she could not afford to have it done here.  Evidently this hospital does this for a lot of foreigners.  I live by the Canadian border and the folks here have always gone up to Canada for dentistry and to get prescriptions filled because it is so much cheaper.  Also for laser eye surgery.  My hubby needs dentures and is going to Canada to get them because it is so much cheaper.  Medical care in this country is very expensive.
local business

Look in your yellow pages for companies that re-cycle as they will stand behind their cartridges -- at least in Portland they do.  I have a large laser HP and my toners cost me over $100 at Office Depot even their re-cycled one.  But several local companies offer for about $75 to $85 and they deliver and last just as long.  I do a lot of printing and so go through about 3 per year at 10,000 copies per toner.  Seems sometimes it is cheaper to buy a new printer.

You may be able to file at the local...
magistrate's office (I believe in the employer's area) if it is under a certain amount. Most have to be under $5,000, some less, some a little more. This would save attorney fees. Just depends on how much you are owed.
MT - Local Company
Sorry, I wish they were. It's a small local company in the town where I live. They won't hire anyone else unforunately. She's trying to save money.
Google in the name of your local
hospital.
local physicians

I was wondering if any one knows if local physicians would rather hire certified MT to do their work from home.  I am thinking about supplementing my income with a national and wondering if this would be a good way to go.  Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated!!
