Care package ideas

I've been doing care packages for deployed military now for a little over a year. There are great sites where you can get a TON of ideas and can even find folks to support if you don't know someone personally. My favorite is:

www.anysoldier.com

This organization has done a lot and you can search on their site for folks from your states or from a specific branch of the military. In addition to doing many of these myself, our company adopted a unit from our state this last year and it's been great to see so many participating.

why are we in Iraq??
Job needs to be done??  Why are we there??  No WMD, no reason to  be there.  They dont want us there..We need to leave, now.  I have talked to many veterans for peace, from the Vietnam War, Korean War, Gulf War and Iraq War and they want us out now..You see, I have total respect for our soldiers that is why I want them out NOW..This war should never have happened..Why did it happen??  Tell me a legal reason why this war happened.  First it was WMD, then it was to get Saddam..then it was to bring democracy to a land that believe me will never know democracy as we know it..Well, there were never any WMD, I knew that, we got Saddam, so why the freak are we still there??  Bush, et al have already been convicted at the International Court and we have broken the Geneva Convention..You do not invade a country that was no threat to you, a soverign country that meant no harm to you..how dare America..Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield and Rice are war criminals, including Blair..We are worst than Saddam ever was..We have killed tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis and over 1, 744 of our soldiers, we have wasted billions in our tax dollars..for what??  Do you think they will ever accept our way of life, not ever..We will leave one day with thousands upon thousands of Iraqis killed for nothing and thousands of our military killed for nothing and billions spend for nothing..Open your eyes!!
DH is currently in Iraq sm
It's a hard life.  He wasn't regular Army though so I was not prepared for it.  He's Nat. Guard.  If you have any questions I'd be glad to answer as best I can.  Mine has been gone 13 months and won't be home until this autumn, around Thanksgiving.
I think she would not have been financing a war in Iraq over oil...
Oh that's right - WE don't have to pay those billions and billions - we're going to let our kids and grandkids foot the bill.
the contract for gas in Iraq is for $2.**
a gallon and is brought in from Kuwait.  However, the price of gas in Iraq is 5 cents.  Something seriously wrong with this picture
What problem in Iraq was that exactly?
THIS administration is responsible for creating a terrorist state in Iraq.
What to send to Iraq

When a package arrives of this nature it is shared with everyone.

Snacks are always welcomed and a microwave is accessable to them.

Don't forget things like babypowder, toothpaste, Q-tips, soap on a rope, lip balm, gum, taffy, licorice, Werthers.

Once i sent the individual containers of applesause and it arrived safely.  Books are well recieved too.

Have you talked to soldiers who have been in Iraq?
I have.  I was told that we definitely needed to be in Iraq, that the job was far from being done.  I was also told that our soldiers would be in less danger now if the U.N. were not imposing so many restrictions on what they have been able to do.  The technology used to protect them costs money, yet we want to yah-yah over what is being spent.  Wars are horrible, but they will always be a reality.  I will not even argue about whether what Bush is doing is the best that can be done, but I know there are more minds working on the problem than just his, and we do not know, and probably will never know what is really going on.  We only know what the media lets us know, and how reliable is that?
Yeah, like in Iraq....lots of help there
.
No, he just looked the other way while he was banging an intern and ignored the problem in Iraq

Clinton never shot anyone and didn't start a mess like Iraq.

military
my grandfather and father were marines and my x-husband was a marine, all front line, first in last out.  my father did 2 active tours in vietnam-by choice. not until recently would he talk about it, but when he does, the pride that is in his eyes is unreal. my x and i had just announced our engagement a few days before 9-11. he wanted to reinlist and i had the same fear that you do, that it wasn't for us. that's a decision that only you guys can make. as good as it can be, it can also be as horrible as can be. just like everything else in life it's how you approach and deal with it that will make you or break you.  no matter what branch, you will always be able to find a friendly face anywhere in the world because there will always be someone else living the same experience. best of luck in your family's decision.
my 18 YO is considering the military...
and I don't know if I want him to do that or not. Has it been a positive experience so far for your son? If you don't mind, what branch did he join? I know you can't wait to hug your baby boy again!
Military
It sounds as if he needs to grow up and accept responsibility for his actions.  What did he expect the military to be like???  You just dress up and march in parades?  Get real!
Military
Actually, I'm glad he's out-- I wouldn't want a wimp like him "protecting" me or this country anyway.  I hope he enjoys his NEW time away from his family being in the brig.  Like, duh----.
Is this what the package says?
I didn't get mine yet. They will be "monitoring" us?

No they only do that if you buy the package - sm
that offers that. I get the "upgrade" every other year as I posted below and I get no other "updates" throughout the year. If you buy the top package then Stedmans does do that, but I don't. I can usually get the upgrade for $40-$50 if I wait for the sale offer they usually do. That is good enough for me.
military deserter?
Don't you have him confused with his predecessor?
Anyone's husband in the military?
My husband is thinking of joining the military.  He has always wanted to since we met about 7 years ago and we just went to a wedding where his couisin was there, who just got back from Iraq.  His cousin is going back voluntarily.  He is a higher rank (I have on idea what the difference is).  Anyway, I am really worried about this.  It is just something that he is thinking about right now, but we have 2 kids and it scares me to death!!!  Any advice or anyone with experience with this?
Military time
I've done it both ways depending on what the client/doctor wants.
Our Military People

I want to share something my family does in case you're interested in doing something similar.  We live near a military base and every year I call and get the names of a couple of soldiers to invite into our home for Christmas Day.  These are soldiers who are very far from home and not scheduled for leave on Christmas.  We been doing this for several years and it has been such a wonderful experience.  We have made friends that we'll keep in contact with until ...

We pick up these soldiers up at a set time and set gate on the base.  They have dinner with us and we always give them some small gifts  -- phone cards, note cards, stamps, restaurant gift certificates, etc.  The guys love it when they get a box of all occasion cards with stamps, as most of them say they aren't very good at picking out cards to send back home.  We end the evening by driving around showing them Christmas lights, etc.

Yes, it is generally a bit awkward for them at first, but they always end up getting "comfortable" and enjoying themselves.

You usually need to call early - they do have to make sure you aren't a serial killer or terrorist.      Often times, they have an office set up where you fill out a form for "adopting a soldier" and that simplifies matters a great deal.

Merry Christmas to all of you!

Don't know about transcribing for the Military, but...sm

your transcription skills will most certainly qualify you for an Administrative Assistant/secretary position for the Military. I started as a GS-4 in Aug 04. Got promoted to a GS-5 in Aug 05 and now am lead secretary in an office of 50 people. I get an automatic promotion to a GS-6 in Aug 06. On top of the all the benefits, they are going to pay for my degree too. I know a lot of people complain about Federal jobs, but mine has been a blessing all the way around.

Military wife
Yep, my husband has been in the AF for 29 years. He has been deployed since middle of March and will be coming home at end of May. I've been MT for 3 years, but all at one place. Wish I would've done it sooner, when we were moving around. He's retiring this summer.
Military Overseas

When companies state no overseas applications or solicitations does that include Overseas Military?? I have DSL and we have a US Post office here on base. Curious cause i'm about to start school and want to know it wont be wasted while we are stationed overseas.

Thanks!

I appreciate the military. I DONT appreciate

Hun, the "platform" is the package sm

you type in.  Dictaphone EXText is a platform, Chartscript is a platform, Careflow is a platform.....all of these PLATFORMS use Word as their word processor.

Word itself is NOT a platform.  The person who answered Dictaphone EXText is correct.

I buy it and use it and it is all caps on the package. nm
:
ATT/SBC has an unlimited package. sm
We use it on 10 lines in our office. It runs $54.99 (or something close to that) every month. It is called Total Solutions or Complete Solutions. You have to ask as they do not offer it unless you ask.
He already knows I'm part of the package! nm

Transcend sent out a package...sm
with all sorts of goodies in it.
Transcribing for military hospital

I have a question, does anybody know of how to get into transcribing for say a military hospital so you could get government benefits, or has anybody does this before?  Would love to have the safety net in retirement of some good government benefits.

Just wondering if there are other military wives out there who are also MTs? NM

Your child JOINED military. Did she do so with

Sounds like apple doesnt fall far from tree if she made life changing move with no forethought.  You say this is 2nd tour. To me that that means she and her hubby signed up for second time so its not like this was sprung on all of you. You need to learn to look ahead and plan better.  And I dont mean plan on better ways to rob your fellow citizens.

TAYLOR all the way now for the WIN. He's the TOTAL package.
Spunk, energy, personality, showmanship, and voice. He's got it all going for him.

Kat should never have gotten this far. She's not singing well and had a bad week. There are songs that she can sing, she's just not well-rounded to do any kind of music.

Lots of people will buy Elliott's CD. He's got a great voice.

I wish they'd publish the vote counts. I can't believe that Chris got the boot! Just shows you how sick this can all get. We'll all be angry if Kat goes on to win. Probably more of the sick "vote for the worst" revenge.
when typing military time, is it, for ex: 1645 or 16:45 nm

Military time would be 1645 hours.

a lotta of the older docs were in the military...sm

and these were memorized by rote...kinda like the ABCs.  Extraordinarily bright men and women who'd served their country and then went on to be docs.

It's always nice to hear them say "Thank you for transcribing this dictation",   Cat

MQ letter/comprehensive benefit package
I really did not make much of it.  It would be GREAT,especially if they can offer something for the part timers, but I'm not holding my breath to hear the news.  It's been promised/talked about for forever, sure would be nice to finally hear.
The MT software I use has an accounting package for my docs - SM

My docs can search on the software  I use by entering date parameters to see how much their transcription costs are.  They can break their transcription costs down by date, by dictator, by type of report, by report, etc.

The first of each month, I e-mail them my invoice; they merely check the accounting package of their software to see if the figures tally up.

This really takes the mystery out of billing for my docs.

The basic Stedman's package is great and they you

I have an Open Office package that came free
It's legit.  I bought a refurbished hard drive so that I could run XP as opposed to buying a new computer, and Open Office came loaded.  I just don't think it's Microsoft.  I don't use it because I use Microsoft Office 2003, but Open Office works very similar to Word and Excel by Microsoft.
I get Sirrus/XM included through my digital TV package,
So I just play it through the home theater system. It rocks
I believe private MTSOs have to bid on contracts to do military work.
x
What did you make of the comprehensive benefit package they talked about

URGENT REQUEST: An MT that we sent a box of gifts to did not receive the package.

It was delivered to their porch according to UPS but she did not get it.  It contained gifts for her children.  Because we did not put insurance on the package, UPS will do nothing to assist.  The box alone to ship had cost $45.00 and insurance would have cost another $25.00.  It is a sad story, but what it boils down to is that the kids won't have a Christmas.  All monies in the Santa's House for Christmas Angels fund have been dispersed through the Christmas Angel program.

So, I am here to ask for help.  I would like to raise $150 to $200 today if at all possible and for anyone who donates $10.00 or more to this special cause, I will give a software package that contains a word Expander and spellchecker that is worth over $100.00 for your trouble.  Donations can be made to sales@mtstars.com via Paypal.

Again, thank you for your consideration.

I should point out that the benefits package with the pathology group... SM

is significantly better than what I've got right now.  They are offering a matching 401K, profit sharing, flexible spending account, healthcare benefits and dental for me and my kids for about 150 per month versus 400 per month where I work now.

Then there is the issue of job security.  I'm a realist and I know that in this business of medical transcription, my job could be gone tomorrow due to lost accounts, low work volume, or offshoring.  Not to mention, the powers that be at my company could decide that it would be more cost effective to pay their editors per line versus hourly (which has happened to me before) and only offer 4 cpl because after all "we don't actually type all that much."

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I've lost jobs due to all those things I listed.  It's upsetting the thought of losing another job.  So that is one of my major considerations with this job offer.  I'm sure they could offer me a measure of job security because they are a locally owned practice by the physician and all of the the transcriptionists there have been with the practice for more than five years.  This position I'm being offered was created because they have increased their work load.

I just don't know.  Geez, I hate making big decisions!

Have you tried the Custom Biz Saver package Snow Bunny? sm
It's through AT&T and it's a business plan. C-phones were supported. I used it for a Lanier when I was IC and I was on it a lot, sometimes 10 hours a day. I had unlimited long distance and never had the problems you are having. Problem is you need to sign a contract for 1 year but even with that it was only $10.00 a month more than a residential line.
Sounds like a wartime military POW personnel training manual..nm

when you marry a man with children, they are part of the package. You learn to deal with it.
