It may be worthwhile IF you can actually find a company now that pays extra for it -
I let mine drop after 6 years. It got to be very costly keeping up with the continuing education credits because for me it meant nearly always having to fly some place to get them, hotel, food, etc. My 2 cents...
I work for a place that pays per word (sm)
and to figure it you just get the total word count (using the word count feature in Word). You would have to find out if the 1000 words is based on "a word is a word," or if there's some "formula" such as suggested in another reply, like every 5 characters counts as a word and does that include spaces in that count, blah, blah, blah. I don't know. If it's just straight up $5.00 per actual 1000 words, then I don't think that's good at all. I make .0085 per word, and I've figured out that it would be an average of 8.5 to 9.5 cents per line. Anyway, if "a word is a word" at least, $5.00 per 1000 words would probably equal around 5-6 cents per line or so.
There is no way to place an average
other than figuring out the average within your group of MTs. To ask a general question of all MTs on this forum will not get the answer you need. There are too many variables. Experienced MTs are going to work a lot faster than newbies. Someone working easy clinic notes will be able to work faster than someone doing difficult acute care work. The quality of the dictator makes a difference. Just way too many variables.
I would evaluate how many minutes each MT does in an hour, within your group, and then give an average. This factors in YOUR dictators, YOUR work types, etc. It doesn't give equality as far as if you have a 30 year vet and a newbie in the group, but I still think this is the only way you are going to get the info you seek.
If you still want to try to figure an overall average of all MT rather than going that route then I would say 15 to 20 minutes of dictation takes about 1 hour.
Can they do surgery extra fast? What do they do with the extra glove in the pack?

VR pays half of what typing pays...
If you would read her post more closely she said she does VR, which pays half of what straight typing does. I do VR and have made 4 cpl, so 5 is actually good and 4-5 is an industry standard, and may be even less if you are an employee. The problem is that you have to double your line counts in order to make decent money, which is not always easy. I embrace VR because I like it better than straight typing, but it is not productive for everyone, no matter how hard you try.
Extra shift or extra work
Has anyone taken on an extra job or shift with a new company for a just a few months to get out of debt or to be able to pay for something that is needed or wanted? I am thinking about taking on another job to get out of a stressful debt situation. I am just afraid I would be going into another stressful situation working more hours with the very busy family schedule I have.

My DH recently had knee replacement surgery a month and a half ago. The doctor has been prescribing oxycontin 30 mg this entire time. Husband has been trying to wean off of it and is down to 10 mg. He asked the doctor if he could come off it completely and the doc said to "just keep taking it." His next visit is in two months. With all the discussion lately about pain medication addiction, is it normal to be on this medication for this long and for the doctor to say "just keep taking it?" How long should one be on this med?

I'm all for being honest so here it is: The cost of living has continued to rise while our pay has continued to drop.
Many of us are single moms or have husbands who are laid off making us the sole breadwinner right now. No, we don't have the inherent extra expenses that go along with working outside the home, but we DO have rent/mortgages, utilities, insurance, taxes, and school expenses to pay for and food to buy.
We don't have the luxury of working part-time...we have to scrape and claw and fight for every possible line we can get every single day just to survive. Many of us are fighting a war that you'll never see covered on the nightly news.
If we don't keep speaking out about this -- who will? We HAVE to stand up for ourselves because no one else is going to!
There's your honesty. If you're not personally in this situation, then count your blessings.
Not rare
I had an account where a company of dictators (not doctors, but PACs I think) was hired specifically to do dictations of discharge summaries. There was a lot of shuffling of papers, but some of them did quite well, considering they probably never met the patient, and I was happy that clear-speaking people were hired to do the dictations of a few very heavy ESL MDs. I don't know how accurate the dictation was, but it sure made my job a lot easier. I have to admit that I wouldn't want my own reports as a patient dictated by an outside person, though.
$35 an hour! lol That is so rare for MTs now.

It is so rare that I have no work that I use
that time to do things I don't normally have time to do, like clean and organize my house, get to some of those craft projects I've been wanting to do. If you have been that long without work it is time to start looking.

If you have bluetooth technology on your cell phone, you can get a cheap bluetooth plug-in for your laptop and use the cell phone as sort of a modem. Good luck trying to do it, though :*( I have Verizon and have everything I need but they have some double-knot top secret spy access phone number that they don't give out. If you can somehow get that number, you can connect anywhere you can get phone service. (and if you can get it, PUHLEEEEASE let me know it! LOL) I think that most, if not all, of the major cell phone providers have this same capability.
Barring that, you can get a card from your laptop maker (i.e., Dell).

reply regarding how you fared on your test. For those of you who are presently going through this situation, I would suggest going back and reading the email you sent requesting the information. Often times online, the inflections in our words are misconstrued. You may be wasting time imaging the worst.
Second solution; just forward a copy of your original email to them; it only takes 10 seconds.
It is so rare that people sell their used
IT software, and when I've seen it up for sale, the person selling usually wants $150 or even more for it.
I purchased mine new from Textware Solutions. It just wasn't worth it to me to wait for someone to put one up for sale and you have to count on them to get the license transfer done, I think. With the extra production I'm able to do with it, I figure the software paid for itself in a month.
It would be very rare to be paid by the hour

If you work for a smaller MTSO, it is rare that
they offshore. I work for a small one FT and another one as an IC, and there has never been talk of them offshoring. A lot of the smaller MTSOs don't.

for a variety of reasons- because I really-really-really want this job, because I have to work at home to take care of my kids/mother/handicapped sister/old dog, because how can I get experience if you DON'T hire me, etc. etc. Most can't pass a grammar test to show they can use effect/affect effectively, and some even reply with emails riddled with typos and sloppy work. So good for you, but you're about one in a million...sad to say

The position varies from place to place..
Sometimes you end up doing VR, which can be really easy or a real pain. Sometimes you end up simply editing files and all is good. Other times, you end up with more job responsibilities and hours than you ever wanted. All in all better than typing LOL.

my thumbs get weird and trembly (?). I suspect that is your problem. Try changing your keyboard position, if you have it raised, make it flat, and visa versa. On my backup computer I have to have the keyboard raised but on my everyday PC I have it flat, and my CTS does not bother me now that I have my keyboards situated well for me.

It is a very good thing that some of you work at home, ALONE! You are sorely lacking in people skills and diplomacy. Let me guess, when you worked in the office you were one of those girls who didn't like to share her desk, griped if someone dropped a crumb on your desk, and kept track of everyone's breaks, lunches, and line counts just so you could tattle to the supervisor! I've worked women like you, it was like working with kindergarteners. That's why I came home to work. I claim married status, one dependent. I'm paid semi-monthly. I make certain to double the SS tax at the bottom of the page.
My taxes are between 22% and 25% of my gross earnings, depending upon what the gross pay is. Never had a problem with the IRS yet.
So, if 40% of your gross earnings goes for taxes ... something is WRONG!!!!

When a country can't pay their own doctors, dentists, nurses, etc. a living wage, this is why they need a new government, a new way of running their country, not the old ORDER OF CRAP they have had for so long.

The VR is crap and ever since we started it, WMX, I have continued to make more by typing from scratch. VR only helps the people who usually do a low line count, less than 150 lph. That is with my company. Some people love it, make more. I am sure it has to do with the VR software. Ours is crap.
Editing Pays More
Without a doubt, I can make more money by editing. I can edit more than twice as fast as I type. Also, I can edit longer without taking a break. The editing process is not as physically demanding as typing.
I get 3.9 cents per line for editing and 8 cents per line for typing.

Their range is 9-11 cpl, statutory. I've been with them for a year and a half and they're a good company. By the way, that's not "incentive" based - the rate is the rate. Peace of mind for those days when you just can't crank out line number 1701 LOL.
