Go to Tools>Options and click the Save tab. I'd try unchecking all the options that involve saves, copies, and backups and try using it like that for awhile. My understanding is that Word will always make some temp copies no matter what you specify, but that should reduce the number of them, which might solve the problem.
Be aware then that if you crash and haven't physically clicked the Save button while you work, you'll lose what you are working on...but if it works awhile without troubles then you might be able to add in some of the features one at a time and see how it goes.
