Setting goals helped me tremendously

Posted By: Gabby on 2007-05-04
In Reply to: I suffered from major burnout about 4 years ago. sm - searchings

I have had burnout in the past and when I did usually tried to take a day or two off. Do not have it now but I just got tired of making a low salary like I was doing so decided I would increase my speed as far as blocking out everything else during the day in order for me to achieve my goal. This last paycheck really paid off. It was $400 more dollars than the time before and I am staying at the increased line count. I like the money and that is more than enough to put some speed in my production. I do not like those lousy paychecks at all.

Monday Goals

I thought that it would be good if we use each week as a chance to improve ourselves.  We can each set a goal (it doesn't matter if it is big or small) and then we will share it with everyone to get us more motivation to complete it.

Here is my goal for this week:
I will do the dishes at least once this week.

A little background on this goal:  I hate housework.  I don't want SO to feel like I take advantage of him so I am going to try to make more of an effort around the house.

Anyone else with a goal and background for it?

Most contract goals are 98% quality

Set goals for line counts

I have set hourly goals of where I want to be at a certain hour, i.e. 500 lines at 2 hours, 1000 lines at 4 hours, etc.  I check my line counts at least on the hour, so then I know where I am.  If I am behind, then I know I have to pick up the pace.  If I am ahead, then I can slow down or visit MT Stars LOL!.   I work pretty much a set shift of 8 hours at the same time every day, so this works well for me.

Also, of course, use your expander. I am limited to Auto Correct, but still have nearly every word over 5 or 6 letters, plus many normals and phrases, saved.  Even if you work on different accounts or different doctors all the time, there are still a lot of words/phrases that can be abbreviated.

The main thing is you have to set goals...
for yourself. My goal is to focus on nothing but transcribing for at least 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Then I allow myself a 15 to 20-minute break. I found by doing this I get SO much more done. I am NOT on any medication so yes, this can be done without it. I had ADHD as a child, which changed to ADD as an adult. You also need to set a minimum line count goal for yourself and basically focus on making that line count goal daily/weekly. I started doing this back in October/November with a goal of a minimum of 1025/lpd--5125/lpw, and then increased my minumum goal about every 2 to 3 weeks as I consistently made each goal that I had set for myself for the day/week. I am now currently at 1150+/lpd--5750+/lpw. I also find that MT work is the BEST type of work I have EVER had with having ADHD/ADD, because of the fact that I learn something new everyday, and with doing acute care, my mind is a LOT more challenged, which is definitely what I needed to keep my ADHD/ADD under control.
Good job! Chose the right man to marry, common goals. KUDOS!
!
if you live among trashy people, low income people, people w/o goals or direction,
content to just get by, you by default become a part of a group. "people" have decided to group trailer people as trash. that is because there are enough people in that group to earn the title and even if you aren't trash, you are categorized by others. did i think i was trash in lower class neighborhood surrounded by people who drank and fought all weekend? no but i knew i wasn't staying and did not try to pretend that all the fools in the neighborhood were just nice folks who ended up where they were because high horse snobs deemed their neighborhood low class. people for the most part live exactly where they belong because they don't want to educate themselves, they don't mind "trash" around them and they don't want to be bothered trying just a bit hard to extract themselves from that world. they justify everything to themselves i guess saying everyone who doesn't like their lifestyle is a snob and the comedians (Jeff Foxworthy/Chris Rock, etc) who make fun of them are just ill-informed.

As for me, I fought hard to get out and don't even want to look back. It amazes me people stay for generations.
what helped me

I had to stay away from situations or places where I tended to smoke.

I know you cannot quit work just to quit smoking but maybe rearranging your home office/work area could help.

I also agree with finding a substitute.  For me, it was the holding of the cigarette, not the oral contact, that was a tough one.  I need to have something to do with my hands - try a stress ball if you find your hands feel empty during your breaks.

I quit in 1997 and still crave a cigarette from time to time but the feeling passes quickly.  The first 4 years were really difficult, though.  Good luck.

Thank you to everyone below who helped (sm)
me with the PTO question.  I got an answer so am a happy camper again

HAVE YOU BEEN HELPED?

Yes, it helped!!! Thanks so much. nm

There is a setting
to fix that and I can't remember what it is. But I complained about it and our IT guys told me how to fix it. There is something that you have to "allow" to get it to work.
Me too. She always helped me when
I was helping out on OPs! Now I do them quite a bit, but still need some help here and there!
helped me a lot
I thought the book was very helpful. I think it increased my speed at least by half. For me, it was a worthwhile investment.
I did try all that and it helped some sm
and it definitely made my computer speed up but the dragging is still there.
It's about time someone helped US out
nm
You believe the people being helped are the same ones...

shooting, raping, etc.???  Perhaps some are, but the majority are ordinary working people, and probably some who aren't working.  So what?  They are human beings and deserve to be treated decently.  Who are you to judge that they aren't worthy of help???

As others have mentioned, I hope when you need help you are able to get it.  What a despicable attitude.  I feel sorry for you.

Thanks for your tips, they helped! NM

SETTING UP A QA PROGRAM
Need some ideas/suggestions for setting up a very tight QA program. I have no idea where to start with this one. Any help is appreciated.
I wanted to thank everyone who helped below
about DHs red blotches.  He is feeling fine this morning.  I did tell him the signs of anaphylaxis and to go to the ER if he has any of those symptoms.  We may never know what caused those blotches.  Thanks again!!!  You all rock!
Thanks. A different speaker helped--
Thanks so much. But, it is the sound quality from my company, it is just bad. They have the good system and then a bad system, is how I interpret it. When it is coming from the bad part, it is bad. That's what I think. Don't know, though. Changing speakers helped, and I did not think of that, so thanks so much.
As an IC you should be setting your OWN rates
And then you inform the clients of the increase--period. You don't "ask" for an increase. That would make you an employee.
I have no idea, but there is a way of setting - sm
in up in WP5.1 so it backs up your work every few minutes, and is saves a back up copy as well. Also if you have to shut down then you just go to your backup folder (you make one up) and there it is under a different name, and you bring that up and resave it and you generally have lost very little work. Email me if you want and I will dig out the instructions on how to set up the backup feature. The problem I have is sometimes I hit something, no idea which 2 keys and I delete my whole report, so the backup feature for me is a lifesaver. Thouhg I have learned the hard way not to save the report after I delete by accident, otherwise the only thing that is in the backup file is a blank file. Luckily I don't make a habit of doing that!
Aha. So it is a setting they could change.
I think they just haven't noticed or haven't had time to do it, but it's good to know it is possible to have it not spellcheck demographics. There is no reason for it since they wouldn't want us to change anything in the demographics.

Thanks.
You are setting yourself up to most likely fail...

if you try to start an MT business right out of school.  Unfortunately, people take the college courses for MT just to find out that most employers do require experience.  There are companies that do hire newbies, but one must have attended an "approved" school.  It's not too late for you though.  I see you as having 3 options:

1. You attend an "approved" MT course/start over with schooling.

2. You apply everywhere, check your newspaper, keep looking.

3. You attempt to start up your own business and learn as you go, although I highly don't recommend this route.

Good luck!

Yes - it helped w/abbreviations, etc.
I think it helps to broaden your knowledge of certain standards if you're job hunting, even if you've never used them.  For example, you won't be surprised when you get a different job or client and someone chews you out about starting a sentence as "27-year-old patient comes in today" (versus "This 27-year-old..." or "Twenty-seven-year-old...").  JMHO and IME
Setting up Lanier LX-219?

I'm at a loss - I cannot find a manual anywere about how to set up my Lanier LX-219 equipment.  I have the terminal block, module and the unit.  two phone plugs on the grey box, one phone plug on the back of the unit.  Does anyone know where I can find a manual on how to set up the equipment? Thanks in advance

I am in our bedroom now, but am setting up - sm
an area in our dining room slowly. Will still work in the BR (I think) during the day; but will move out to the DR when DH wants to go to bed so my typing does not keep him up. That has been a running battle for years and finally bought a new CPU as a backup and now am loading all my programs, etc. which I don't have the time to do of course. Just need to finish doing that and get a new monitor as I am using an ancient one right now that is probably around 12 years old now, huge bugger. If I like it out there more I may work out there during the day too.
Are you setting your own rate?

If so, find out what others in your area are charging. If you think you should be paid more because you're doing pathology, then charge more.

If you're being offered a rate, then do you consider it to be enough? No one else can really answer those questions but you.

I finally helped someone. Yea!! (nm)

Setting up your own accounts

I've been doing some research on here and checking out various links and such regarding setting up my own accounts but am finding myself more confused than ever!   I've noticed some talking about things like mydocsonline, bytescribe, wav player, Olympus, etc., but how exactly do these work?  I'm assuming there is a system in their office or on their end and then I use some sort of system or connect with that to get jobs? How does this all work?

I've been looking into this and trying to understand how it works, as when I recently went to the ENT office they asked if might be looking for some work .  I didn't feel comfortable talking about it in depth because of my lack of understanding.  They are a mid-sized practice with 2 offices and probably less than 10 physicians.  Any info or advice anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.  Please feel free to email me also if you'd like.

You probably have your setting defaulted sm
to justify - it's "blocking" your text so it all looks like one neat block.  It removes or adds spacing to spread it just so.  Turn it off and you can eliminate the problem you're having.
setting the tone...
This is meant for e-mail but it is also helpful on message boards too...enjoy:

Help with setting new entry in VPN
I need some expertise... I have VPN for a company on desktop set up, need to create a new entry for another company.. .is that possible?  I have the file in the right folder (PCF or something close to that file) and did the wizard, but it says no valid ID when I know it is... what am I doing wrong?
natural products helped me - sm
I feel for you. Different story, (though same in that tubes tied, PMS-crazy 10 out of 30 day each month, teens) but maybe this might help you. I could not opt for hormone tx (diabetic)after hysterectomy (for other changes in cycle; light, then very heavy, then not there) and opted for surgery when fibroids were found.)Immediate surgical menopause resulted in symptoms even though before this my FSH and estradiol levels came back I was not peri.

Researched websites and found natural progesterone cream (bought at local health store)helped me a lot, but wound up on Lexapro (calming) too. Taken together, this was the optimum fix for me.
Beats my clinical setting..
I'm shut off in a 12 X 12 room, hearing loud voices outside my door, file clerks running around hunting charts and griping every minute, nurses flitting about hunting "stuff", the office manager laughing loudly outside my door while she flirts with the doctors, and my WeatherBug is calling for the heat index of 115 for my area!  I'll trade with YOU!
A mouth guard helped me
Good luck.
Setting the record straight

You purchased an IN-155 foot pedal for compatiblility with DVI VoiceWav.  (We have sold nearly 1,000 of these with zero returns.)

When you called our toll free 800 number for support we told you that the problem was not the pedal and was either the software you were using or your computer.  Reluctantly, we agreed to do an exchange for you.  (FYI, when your first pedal came back to us it worked absolutely perfectly and still does.  In fact it is plugged into the same computer I am typing on at this moment.  It has been tested daily since it came back with no problems).

Now, you voice incorrect information on MTStars.  Your problem is in your computer.

Please feel free to call us yet again if this is not clear to you.

Split shift helped me a LOT! Was
getting very painful to type eight hours straight.  It has helped to the point where I barely realize any pain anymore.  Also, I can seem to go "great guns" the first hour or two of my shift, and then slow down some after that. This way, with split shift, I have two sets of "two hours" of gungho, at least as gungho as I can get...LOL.
Setting backspace for pedal

I have an older transcriber (DAC Model DA-125) and have had it for quite some time now.  I moved my office over the weekend and had to unplug the machine.  Well, my backspace has reset to practically nothing and I can't find my manual on how to reprogram the backspace.  Is there anyone else out there using this phone and if so, how to do reprogram it for the backspace length?

Thanks so much for your help.

That Turtle Beach Audio Advantage is really the ticket. I can't believe I was living with such bad sound quality for so long. THANKS SO MUCH! This is really helping immensely.
I'm happy my post helped you....sm

and I NEVER lie!!  It's the truth!!  My only thing today is I don't want to go back out there and re-solicit (I still work for the BIG national part time for now but the day I leave there, I'm hitting the streets again...*LOL*)

Best of luck!!!  You'll do fine!!!  Meeting them all in person to me, where they can see your face, what you emanate in public, one's honesty and directness...I believe the doctors ALL like this!!  And if the office is busy and they cannot see you or interview you, you come back another time - made an appointment.  *S*

Setting up 2 computers with 1 monitor - Need help!

I will be starting a second job next week and need to use that companies computer.  I know I need a syslink router to enable them both to use our cable modem, but I know there is a box you can get so you can use one monitor and turn the dial to switch back and forth between computers.  Anyone know what this is called and where to get it?   Also, is there a way to use only one mouse and keyboard also, or will I have to have 2 keyboards and 2 mice on my desk?  (I have a small desk and am limited on space).  Thanks for all help!!

Thank you everyone for the input. It helped with my decision.
I have been feeling quite used for years by her, but have been putting up with it because she IS family. My mom did tell me years ago that she hates cooking holiday meals, so she has basically invited herself every year since 1999. We do always have a good time, but I do nearly all the cooking and cleaning up. Sometimes she and her husband show up in time to eat, gather the leftovers, and leave. I go all out for holiday dinners too. I have decided NO more. We cannot be used unless we allow ourselves to be a doormat. Thank you for telling me what I needed to hear, especially those of you who have also dealt with this.
yes, and I found it really helped for awhile sm
then I hit some life situations where I just could not cope. My doctor put me on Lexapro, and it was a life saver. If your depression is mild, 5HTP is a really good start. St. John's Wort barely took the edge off for me, but the 5HTP was quite good.
I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE WHO HELPED ON INDENTING NUMBERS!

Thank you so much, I lost a days work not knowing how to do it as the account requires indented numbers.
