Different Grandkids

I'm by no means an expert, but I can tell you how different our two grandchildren are. My grandson will be 5 in June. He's very tiny (only weighs 34 pounds and wears size 3T), but he's extremely intelligent and very athletic. His daddy asked him recently how many points difference there was in a basketball score (109-99 or something like that) and he thought for a minute and blurted out the correct answer!! He can count to more than 100 and can count by 10s. He loves sports and scored between 8 and 12 points in each of his YMCA basketball games against kids a head taller. He's just amazing. He is very socially adept and well-mannered.

On the other hand, my husband's grandaughter is just three months younger (born on 9/11/01 of all days!!). She is a head taller and 20 pounds heavier than my grandson but she is extremely shy and immature and a downright brat. She screams and throws tantrums much of the day and has a very short attention span. She refuses to sit still long enough to learn her numbers and letters. She is also very physically clumsy. She's also very selfish and will not share anything.  She will scream until her mommy picks her up and carries her into our house....as heavy as she is!!

I think much of the difference has to do with the fact that my son and his wife both work (he's an elementary school teacher and she's a nurse administrator) and he's been in either daycare or preschool ever since he was born. On the other hand, our grandaughter will not stay with anyone so my stepdaughter has never been able to work. She has never had the social interaction that is so important for kids. She's going to miss the deadline for kindergarten this year (thank God), but I cannot imagine how she will be able to tolerate being away from her mommy for even a few hours. I can just see her kicking and screaming. We figure she's going to be kicked out of kindergarten.

Anyway, long story short, all kids are different and these differences are the result of a lot of factors, some of which we have control over and some we don't. My stepdaughter's husband is a real a...hole and has a terrible personality and my granddaughter is much like him. The parents also fight a lot and he's very demeaning to my stepdaughter. On the other hand, my son and his wife are wonderful parents, love each other and him very much, and are very social and they include him in all their activities.

I was a single parent, too, raising two sons from infancy by myself. I worried a lot about how they would turn out, but they're both great young men. Of course, we hit a lot of snags along the way. Just be patient and supportive and hopefully you and your ex-husband can form a united front when parenting your child. Just don't fight in front of her. That's the best gift you can give her.

46, married, 4 kids, 4 grandkids. :)

46 married 4 kids 3 grandkids. Hubby's fingers too big to MT

Size 12 in a ring and he's 5' 11" 157 lbs. Big old sausage fingers. He tries to look something up on the net and I have to type it for him or he hits 3 keys at a time.

He plays a mean bass guitar though.

True IC work
To take up where someone else left off - are there any true "IC" jobs out there where the MTs work hours are truly flexible?  I work now as an IC but my shift is dictated which is completely against the 20 rules that the IRS states - and of course I do not always have work.  With 15 years of experience, I would think that I could find the "perfect" job, but have struggled over the last few years to find anything like what I worked a mere 10 years ago.  I stay where I am because I have not been offered anything more than what I have where I am - and am actually pretty satisfied, other than the hours not being flexible - I am just wondering what has happened (other than outsourcing) to have changed this field to what is is now.  Do any of you other MTs have a hard time suggesting this as a field of study for people who ask about it?  I do know that with the price of gasoline more and more companies (other than MT) are offering their workers the opportunity to work from home, but it is so hard to leave the field that you have loved for so long.
That is true! Where is the work going?
A few platforms seem to be down this week, and other companies are slow. Of course, it is spring break, so it may be there is not much work, but still people get sick. Wondering if the MTSOs know more than we do on all of this. Just wondering about job postings here too and even on other boards...etc.
IF you need true ULD for work
purposes your best best is something like Vonage of digital phone through cable company.   It is truly unlimited.   Other companies say they have unlimited, but they have a cap of 5000 minutes and that isn't enough if you work FT.
MQ-True or False about Work

Can this be true???? My girlfriend who works out of the Ohio office left me a message saying that she had gotten a message over the week end from the Ohio office with the following incentive: For every 10 reports that you typed, you would receive 25 dollars--IS THIS POSSIBLE with all the rest of us out of work in Amherst--if there is so much work in Ohio, why are we not helping???

This is true. I work for the Q -rarely run out
of work (live in CA). And by the way, I would get paid my benefit rate (which is at least twice the CA min wage. I always thought this was why I never got NJA. But at the same time, I know they would love it if I quit.

So true, work for some doctors and clinics also and many are now
jumping on the save lots of money and offshore bandwagon! We just can't win. It's over everyone :(
Not true. I work for a company that offshores.
Good grief.

True. So then don't work. We're talking CHOICES here. nm

ICs are not required to work a specific schedule, true? SM

I had my meeting today with the HIM director of one of my accounts.  My contract is to do all the clinic work and provide 24 to 48 TAT.  Today, the director tells me she wants me to log in no later than 9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.

I, of course, balked at this.  I basically outlined the terms of our contract which states that I will give them 24 to 48 hour TAT, but that I am not required to adhere to a specific work schedule.  I set my own hours.  I don't necessarily have a problem logging in by 9:30 a.m. most days, but there are some days when I have morning appointments and commitments and let's face it, that's why I'm an IC, so I can have that flexibility!

I don't think this lady has any concept of what an IC is or what a contract is for that matter.  She acts like I'm her employee.  She tells me she has looked into some of the national companies and that they can guarantee her a set schedule.  I'm sorry but I only charge her 0.12 cpl, I print up the work and deliver it three times a week.  Plus I'm picking up tapes and transcribing them as well!

I think it's time for her to see what else is out there.  What do you guys think?

You rock! Thanks for raising the bar! nm

Raising hand
I am quite happy. Always have tons of work. I get more PTO than any other company could even come close to, and now we get 2 extra paid holidays. I think they are really trying hard to turn things around. Plus I love Chartnet.
Raising per line rate

Do any of you have plans to raise rates with the new year coming up?  I know my offices have raised their rates three times this past year, but I have not.  With gas prices, heating prices, food, etc, going through the roof, I feel I don't have a choice.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Fantasia is raising her daughter...sm
please get your facts straight...........
I disagree. I am raising 3 children

and have never paid for daycare while working.  I have been doing this for about 10 years and my children are ages 10, 7 and 5.  As I have added children and they have gotten older, it has become more distracting, but there are ways to do it without daycare.

When younger and I only had the 1, I worked in the mornings and afternoons when he was sleeping and finished up my day when my husband came home.  As our family grew and the younger children became older, I dropped the afternoon shifts and worked primarily early morning and nights when the kids were sleeping and/or my husband was home.  Now that they are in school, I am able to work daylight during the school year and evenings/nights in the summer when my husband is home.  If I had to pay daycare, no way would this be a profitable job.

I would not recommend that you get into this field if you will need to pay daycare expenses.  You're much better off if you can work around your husband's schedule (if married) or if you have family close by that would be willing to help out a few hours a day with childcare.  Now that my kids are all in school, I really do enjoy the freedom this job allows me.  I rarely miss a school function or sporting event and the summers at home are great!

Help with raising food costs sm

While not available in all areas, this is a wonderful program to help out families and communities.  I used it for years when I lived in Colorado and now that I have moved, I am in the process of finding this program in my state.

The program consists of paying a certain amount for a given box of food (you can buy more than one) on a certain day or days.  Then, you put in volunteer hours in your community for each box you purchase.  You have a volunteer slip signed where you volunteer.  On D-Day, you go and pick up your boxes of food.

The boxes consist of fresh fruits and vegetables and meat items.  Occasionally there is cheese too.  There might be pasta and/or rice.  There is often a prepared food item.  They offer seasonal boxes for holiday baking, meat lover's boxes in time for summer grilling and Thanksgiving boxes.  The retail value of what you get in a SHARE box is usually at least double the cost of the box, and that has been my experience.  The kids and I used to go and help on D-Day, passing out boxes, cleaning up for our volunteer activity.

is for Colorado and several other states, but should link you nationally too.

Templates raising line count ok?
I have a doc who wants to start using templates with many "much-repeated" phrases already typed in.  The template could be rather lengthy for new patients, not so much for rechecks.  That's fine with me, but it is causing my line count to go way up and I'm not sure that they will be willing to pay this much of an increase once they see just how much it is.  Do I let them make the call, bring it to their attention or keep quiet?  I just don't want to start depending on the extra money and have it jerked away suddenly when they "come to their senses."  Any input is greatly appreciated!!!  Thanks!
The people who care are all raising their hands.
I care about doing a good job and want to be well compensated for that work, so count me in. If you're not interested, don't disparage those who are.
...count instead, or raising your word rate. nm

Raising my child to be self supporting taxpayer.

If my husband died I'd just focus on raising my kids.
And then after they were raised - no, I wouldn't actively pursue meeting someone else.  If I just happened to someday meet the perfect match, fine.  But I wouldn't be out looking.  I think it would just be too hard to adjust to not only the death of your husband, but living with someone completely different.  I'd just fill my life with all kinds of OTHER stuff.
You don't have to but I take morgage, etc deduction. Need the help now raising family. Plan on
:+
I cannot stand the attitude some people have toward raising children!
They don't have to be put in daycare either.

I would say people with this kind of attitude usually don't have children and therefore don't believe in the power moms have to get it ALL done. Just because this is not the situation you find yourself in does not mean it cannot be done! Open your eyes and get with the program - we ARE doing it and doing it WELL - like it or not!
don't count on raising rates yearly as an MTSO.

As an MTSO, don't think you are going to increase your accounts *yearly* (the word you used).....good luck if you're taking that route!!

I have my surgeons for a decade due to they pay very well and I have NEVER raised their rates because then they COULD choose to go elsewhere for less.....just my take.....

I also worked for nat'l services for years and they rarely raised their rates to their clients, as they, too, never wanted to lose any accts.

Good luck to you, whichever way you go!!

Raising hand. Let me be the first to apply at DisneyWorld Transcritption. nm

Yuppie parents today raising a bunch of big babies
Wish someone could get through to them that they are doing more harm than good.   Nephew's children are like that - it is so annoying.  6-year-old spoiled rotten, and not even fun to be around at all, but it's because they have babied him so much and given him everything he wants, that now he is just a sullen little boy.  Can you believe using that word to describe a very bright little 6-year-old boy?  It's really a shame.
When I worked at Mayo the desks had the capability of raising up. The keyboard,

so you could stand and type.  It was a refreshing change.  I really liked the set up.  Mayo paid a chunk of change for those desks and there were over 90 MTs in our office.

Thank you ghost! So true! So true! More than one person!

true, true but out of about 90 flicks....1 or 2...nm

true, true - but what you see as arrogance...sm

I think a lot of people go the extreme -

so, if I had to be one way or the other (being a humble extremist myself...*LOL*), I'd rather have too much self-esteem than not enough (been there, done that the first 30 years!!! *L*).  And I am a truly humble person, been recognized for just that.....but because of *been there, done that* - and all sorts of therapies (not drug therapies), some end up the other way.  Oh well, this was a fun couple of posts - so I thought.

Gave me much to chew on :)  Have fun!

True but to say there are no good MTs not true.

ROFLMAO!!!! so true! so true!
Everybody sees it but her, though! I love it! Thanks for the giggle! ":^)
I get my work from an FTP site that they load the work to, however I don't have pool work so to
speak, but I tell them how many minutes a day I want.  The work is generally put in my box by 5 pm every day, then I have until 10 am the following day for some priority work, or 3:30 pm for the rest, so TAT is not too bad. I would like to work less at night though, but I working on that. My downside is I do not get the same dictators day to day, there are a few I do on a semi-regular basis though, some generate great lines but take longer to do that other doc's and are not "money-makers", I also do not get paid for spaces so that hurts a bit too.  This is WP5.1 too.....so very antiquated but that is what the hospital uses, so not much choice there. But I understand what you mean about the C-phone. I was just doing another job with C-phone recently...they incidentally did not tell me how to get off of the system, which was very simple.  I'd finish a job, then hit stop and hangup if I wanted to get off or quit working.  That is what you need to do if you want to sleep, eat, etc.  Don't feel guilty, do what you signed up for, believe me they watch the pools and will get others to do the work you don't finish.  If they get on your case remind them that you are only PT and only want 500 lines a day, etc.  It's not worth killing yourself over.  Good Luck.
True!

that's so true nm

this is sad, but true
search engines are great, but they pick up all the WRONG information also...so be careful
That may be true for No. Cal. (sm)

in Southern Cal (Orange County), the accounts have become quite scarce and most doctors will not pay over 11 cents per line, that is, if you can find your own accounts at all anymore.  They get a lot of solicitations and do not have to pay over 11 cents.  There is a lot of EMR taking over out here or all the accounts have been taken by large services.

Sad but true
.
Of course, what you say is all true; however...
my compassion and tolerance dries up pretty quickly when someone expects special treatment (plays the ____ card, if you will) because of situations they are in a result of their own decisions.

This comes across as harsh, but it's a fact of life that decisions do have consequences, and when people try to minimize the consequences of their actions and/or expect other people to pick up their slack, I get mighty testy indeed.
Hey, what I said is true - I do it --
I don't cherrypick. I probably work longer hours (about 9-1/2 to 10 a day)than most but I can get 3000 lines in a day and if I worked longer, say 15-16 hours, I have no doubt I could get 4800 lines.

No one is cutting ANYONE's line count. I just stick with it, man. I keep typing while others are up running around doing their laundry, or tending to a kid, or playing on this board. I just keep typing steadily along.

Hey, man, I'm sorry if you have problems getting more lines but that doesn't mean I or anyone else am taking them from you. They are there. Sit down and type 'em.

And NO, I don't work for this company. Every company has CPs and it is not fair. But just because YOU can't do someone else's line count doesn't mean they didn't get it -- without doing something unfairly.
That's not true (sm)
I confirmed this with my office when I started DQS. I also tested it by importing text into another program and all characters and spaces, including the red headers were counted.

Is this true?

A girl at work today told me that Keanu Reeves is the (late) Christopher Reeves son.

I never heard this before, and so far I am unable to document via the internet.  Anyone have any input?  Much thanks.

It is true

Dont doubt it, it is true.

Beth, face the fact that we aren't buying your bunch of hooey.  Shame on you for trying to sell it to us.  Go away.  Go troll somewhere else.
SO TRUE
I couldn't believe what was happening. I knew that I was producing much, much more work, but couldn't understand why I was not getting near the lines that I was getting before the switch. Then, one day, I found out. I've hated MQ every since.
