There's a board specifically for these types of jobs

Call centers and different types of phone work. From what I've seen, if you have a quiet environment and flexibility this is a good job to make extra money.

Others have other types of jobs?

Hi everyone,

Do any of you have other types of jobs besides MT, QA, Editing, etc. like me?? I just started another type of job for evenings to help out financially, and I like doing so.  I still do my main MT thing, but the other one is actually fun for me, and not just slaving away all day at a computer!!

I have had many different types of jobs s/m

from the lowliest to corporate level, and I take pride in all work that I do.  I do not find this profession in any way boring -- there is always something new to be learned and every case (usually) is different and fascinating to me.  Sometimes they make me laugh, sometimes they make me cry, but it is never boring!!.  I just get so frustrated with the regard that everyone else looks at this profession -- that because I work from home, it is not a "real" job, or that what we do is not important or significant.  This job requires a myriad of language and technical skills that I believe an "average" person could simply not do. I have done brain-numbing data entry, and this work is far, far more involved than simply transferring numbers or names into a format.

I look at the jobs board too...
just because I am bored.  The sad thing is the number of jobs seems to have decreased and it seems to be the same rotten places advertising for MTs over and over.  Most of these I have already been hired by and can understand why they have to keep a permanent job posting here ... they just plain suck!  If you are actually looking for a job, are an MT with some experience and willing to put up with a lot of crap you can probably get hired by one of these places as most have to hire 100 MTs to find one who will stay!  Good luck!

Just saw Etrans hiring for Atlanta, Birmingham, Columbia, Charleston
on the job board.
When applying for jobs on board

I am back in the "look for another job" phase of my life which I thought had ended.  After several years, I am back in the market though and have responded to ads posted on this message board.

Do you ladies and gentlemen typically include a cover letter stating you situation and stats, equipment, etc?

And, with regard to equipment, if we do not have what is requested but are fully willing and able to purchase it to be able to work for the job being applied for, should we state this?  It appears that jobs posted are asking for specific equipment and that is not a problem other than getting it shipped to us.  Unless they want us to hit the ground running these days.

Thank you for your time, comrades in arms.

jobs on seeker board

I am wondering, are most of the jobs at http://forum.mtstars.com/seeker/ for at-home positions? As opposed to working on site?

Thanks.

The job seeker's board has a lot of local jobs
advertised all over the country. I don't see her making that kind of money as a home-based MT, but she would not have travel expenses, etc. Good luck.
Focus Infomatics has another ad on the jobs board

again

The Job Seekers board shows jobs that are available. You can
post your resume securely in the Resume Bank.  If you do not want to give a lot of detailed information, you can post with the name Available MT or something of that nature and in the body give a brief description of your experience.  When you enter your email address it is not visible to potential employers, but they can send you an email.  Only when you reply will they know your email address.  It's a great way to put yourself out there without COMPLETELY putting yourself out there.  If an employer is looking for someone with your skills and experience, they will contact you.  Good Luck!
Try this....I found it in the Jobs board, but it is from June.

I am a medical Transcriptionist who has over 15 years of experience and also have taught medical transcription and provided quality evaluations for graduating students at the college level. I am in the process of revamping my medical transcription business and have a spot for two either graduates or soon to be graduates to intern.

The internship will be paid at a starting rate of 0.06 cpl (65 char with spaces) while in training and then will go to 0.07 cpl. This is an wonderful opportunity to gain much needed experience as well as allowing you the opportunity to work from home.

Just reply by email if you are interested and tell me a bit about yourself for consideration. You will need a USB foot pedal and either cable or DSL. Also need to have a medical spellchecker and a willingness to learn and retain.

Please specify hours (times) and days available in your response.

Good luck to you.

(Actually, Company-Board isn't that great a place to look for jobs -
No mssg.
Search on the Companies or New Student board for course info. Jobs are available all over the US and

Did you try Chronicle Transcripts on the jobs board? Or go to mtjobs.com. Lots of CA companies. nm

Did anyone specifically ask you for references?
Do not give out references unless you are asked to.  If they did ask you, did they want personal or professional references?  I use my parents' friends as personal references.  They've known me my entire life and would never say anything bad anyways.  As for professional references, you can call old supervisors or coworkers to see if they would do it.
The recruiter specifically said 8-4:30 Sun through Fri.
This has been mentioned in conference calls.

"You are not to work outside of your schedule. If we need you to work outside of your schedule, we will call you. Do not work off the clock. No where in the U.S. do people work off the clock. It is not legal to work off the clock. Do not work OT without prior authorization."

These are a few of the statements made by management regarding when to work.

I don't play bingo. I do have a mtg, a car payment and would like to live a modest middle America lifestyle which I cannot do I there is a feeding frenzy for the work load because some people make their own rules.

If my company would have said, "have at it" with regard to when to work, I'd be the first one and here is what I'd do.

I'd leave my computer on 24 hours a day and simply check on the work load every 30 minutes, sit down and type away when there was work to do and get up and do other things when there is not.

However, I signed a contract that said I understood the terms and until I am told otherwise, I will follow them.

M-TEC has a program specifically for ....

those with a prior healthcare bakcground.  M-Tec programs are very comprehensive.  Many companies waive the usual 2-year experience requirement for grads.

OP specifically said wants rental on...nm

My mom has specifically told me...
that she wants me to let the state take care of her. I, of course, cannot do this. I love my mom way too much, and she has had a VERY rough life. Unfortunately, she has not been able to save or put away money for her when she gets older. She will have to work until the day she dies. Having 4 kids with no help whatsoever from the dads, family or the state, she has taken care of us the best she could....holding down 2-3 jobs at times. All the while doing this, she still had my brothers in baseball, took my sister to the medical center for counseling several times a week and stood up to my abusive father in court to fight for her kids. Not to mention, my three times a week breathing treatments. We came first ALWAYS! None of my brothers and sisters (the ones still living) can take care of themselves. I understand that it will be my responsibilty, one in which I will do without hesitation. The only exeption to that would be if it were damaging to my own family, which she made me promise her. If it got to the point, like a friend I know, where she was constantly crying in pain and it was taking an emotional toll on them, I would have no choice but to put her in a nursing home. You bet your butt though I would be there on a regular basis.

It just all depends on the situation. I do think though that it is a very sad thing that we do not take care of our family better, especially our elders. When there are elderly people sitting without AC because they can't afford a $450+ electric bill, not eating right, going without medicine, that is a sad thing...just as it is that we have children starving in our own country.
Same here. I have accounts that specifically say to
put the patient's name in the report if the physician dictates it.
sometimes the docs specifically say they--sm
won't pay for *normals* or pretyped template phrases. If he/they have not already stated this, then charge the same. If they realize after the fact that this is the case, be honest and tell them that it was never stated not to include template normals and then negotiate a price. If, as the other poster stated, you have to print these out, it is still costing you the same, so I would charge for it. Perhaps, if you want to be above board, ask him prior to beginning with the new templates, what his intentions are. Sometimes they *forget* to say whether it is paid for, or not. I hope you get what you want out of it. good luck.
Unless the client specifically says do not
double space, then I do. Were you told not to?
If the doc said specifically send via (sm)
email, then address the email to him with ccs to other docs who are to receive a copy..
Maybe she is told to specifically do certain
dictators first or worktypes first. You never know what goes on behind closed doors or what agreements other coworkers have with the company or supervisor.

You can approach the subject with you supervisor gently without accusing the other MT of anything and see what reply you receive. At least, that is how I would approach it if it really bothered me.

Personally, I really don't pay much attention to what other coworkers are doing, as long as there is enough work for me and I am able to make a decent pay check and have the quantity of work to transcribe, I am happy.

Try not to get so wrapped up in what others are doing and just do your job to the best of your ability. If and when it hinders your ability to make a decent living, then maybe talk to your supervisor.
I would specifically ask the company
how your lines are being counted, their program, characters with spaces/no spaces whatever. Get it in writing. You have a right to know. After you get it, compare counts and if they are wrong go back on them for backpay, provided of course you have your old line counts and can verify it.
No info about them specifically...
But I would suggest that you look into AHIMA's Coding Basics.  Their program is eligible for college credit, which is very important.  Many coders have their RHIT credential.  In order to obtain that, you need an associate's degree.  If I remember correctly, the Coding Basics program provides around 40 college credits.  You need around 60 credits to finish an associate's degree, so you would have about 2 semesters to get those extra 20 credits.  Their program is self-paced and costs around $2000 plus books.
Specifically the Good Humor
ice creams bars with the chocolate candy surprise inside! Do they still make them? I may have to chase down an ice cream truck. Oh, do they still make THEM? LOL!
Can someone tell me specifically how to take Instatext and Glossaries

to a new computer?  I guess a flash drive, but i have never used one.  Do you just plug it in a USB and....well, then what?

Thanks in advance!

They specifically asked for a contract.
They want a contract by Tuesday.  I think it protects all parties involved.
Can't you read? I specifically wrote...
"..for us, the MTs.'
nobody looked down on you that you know of specifically but there is that "trailer trash"
mentality the general public thinks about trailer people. You have heard the jokes.
More specifically, free medical spellchecker, sorry about that..

what are you finding specifically wrong with this company
nm
We were specifically instructed to work our schedule
and that working off the clock was not permissable, that nowhere was working off the clock permitted. That if the acct required us outside of our shift, we would be called by management. It is to prevent taking work from the scheduled MTs (as well as unapproved OT.

So, I am not dreaming this up. This was made clear. They gave us a shift to work, we clock in and clock out during those shifts. If they need us after our shift is up, they will contact us.

Oops..sorry your right. I forgot that. I specifically ordered my Windows XP as Vista is compatible w

Just about every computer has Vista now but I went through Dell and found the computer I wanted with Windows XP and then went into ebay and got it $400 cheaper than what Dell was going to charge..The one downfall, it didnt have Office Word etc.. installed so I had to buy that but I still came out ahead.

I did 3 jobs for a while about 3 years ago, you burn out quick, I was doing 3 MT jobs though...after
10 months I cut down to 2 as I don't like to have all my eggs in one basket.  But I am considering going down to 1 in September for my sanity, its a good steady job so financally it should not be an issue.  I have 2 right but have not worked the 1 in about 3 weeks due to some problems at their end, supposed to learn a VA account but not sure if I want to pursue it right now or not, they are waiting to hear from me at this point. I still have a lot going on with chemo, etc. so am mulling things over.  But if you have a full-time day job, then I would just go with 1 part-time MT job at night, unless 1 is during the week, and the other weekends only, then of course you will be working 7 days a week, very tiring I know.  I have been working 7 days a week for 3 years now but I do slack off now and then of course to recharge and get sleep etc. But burnout happens fast and I doubt you want to lose your day job so be careful. Good luck.
I'm 45 and have done all types (sm)
of transcription. I did formal training for MT in 1998, after my training I was doing pretty well. Now that I am getting nothing but leftover, terrible dictators doing medical transcription, I make more money doing general transcription.
NOT planning on taking on anymore medical dictation since the offshoring got going. It has been a nightmare to find decent accounts, companies and decent dictators in the last year or so.
How come whenever someone types a lot of

lines in a day it is considered cherrypicking? I just finished my shift for the day and had 3897 lines. Did I cherrypick? No! I can't see what work I'm getting until it shows up on my screen. I worked a total of 11 hours with my 3 breaks figured in. Yes, I did work 2 hours OT but they asked for OT so I sat and worked. I can work steadily for 3-4 hours and then get up and stretch. I had no normals except the ones that I put in myself for the doctors. I've been doing the same accounts for about 8 years and have tons of "normals" for a lot of the doctors. Once in a while they will change their wording to throw you off course. The only doctors that slow me down nowadays are the new residents who must talk for no less than 30 minutes for each patient. Out of the 132 charts I transcribed, I had about 65% ESLs. Just because some people type a lot of lines in a day does not mean that they are a cherrypicker.

That's one of the things I hate about some nationals. You should NOT be allowed to see the other line counts of your fellow workers because all these accusations happens. If you see someone with a constantly high line count, you automatically assume they are getting all the "good" doctors when it is not the case with a lot of people. It may be true in some cases but you're lumping everyone with a high line count into one group.

There are these types in QA and in MT, too.
NM
so who types it? they only way around that would be to outsource
and that seems ridiculous.
Report types.

Easiest-family practice.  Hardest-OB/GYN.

skin types
It does depend on the skin type and the type of laser machine they used. Many of them do not do darker skin. They all do tend to work better on lighter skins. I have dark hair due to a hormone imbalance my whole life since childhood. Dark hair on my arms, etc. Some laser brands of machine are better than others. Let me know if you decide you want information on the one I work for or I can give you the name of the top selling laser brand out there that I would recommend from what I know.
you can ask these types of questions
such as laborlawtalk.com

There are different types of USB pedals

There is Olympus, VEC, Infinity, many, many.  Look at the bottom of your pedal to get the code.  If it is an Infinity, you will see something like IN-USB1, or IN9B (for 9 pin) or IN-DVIUSB.  All the Infinity foot pedals work with ExpressScribe EXCEPT the DVI because it is a higher technology than is compatable with ES.  Run the foot control wizard on ExpressScribe to help it locate the foot pedal and recognize it so you can use it.  You may have to try all the COM ports on the wizard before you hit the right COM port and the foot pedal is recognized.  My Infinity foot pedal USB1 is recognized in ES as the _VEC_ if that helps you.

I have had to do the hand control thing and it is very frustrating and can make the test take 4 times longer than with a foot pedal.
