best system for working at home on your own

HI all...

I currently work for a company and although I love the docs I have I would like to expand on my own and have been considering getting my own accounts.  I was wondering what the best system is to work with for recieving dictations, transcribing reports and sending completed work. I have done the tape pick up an drop off thing and don't want to do that again. I want something that will be convenient for doctors.  I have looked at several systems online with multiple lines.  Is it better to buy a whole system, or is there software that works great with existing computers? I have seen some systems that allow for both call in and digital recorders to work.   I think it would be beneficial to have at least two lines, I'm just not sure where to start.....  Any suggestions will be much appreciated!!

Also working two jobs...
My first job lost the account I was on and put me on two smaller accounts. I was getting very little work so took a second job for 15 hours per week. Now that I've been working that job for a week I've just been informed that my workload is going to pick up from my first job. I'm completely stressed out and don't know what to do. I hate working for two companies but am scared to leave either one of them for fear of hitting a big famine again. I might be brave enough to do it if I weren't afraid of the gas bill this winter but, alas, I'm pretty much stuck.
working 2 jobs
Yes, I'm working 2 jobs, one is FT, the other is probably 30 hours a week (??) maybe. I feel for your situation. I remember the days when an experienced MT was so hard to find. Now I'm working 2 jobs just to pay the bills 1 job used to be able to handle. Go figure. I'll never leave working from home, I love it. Get more work done working from home. I hate running out of work too.
Working 2 jobs
Oh my goodness. I remember about 11 years ago I worked 2 jobs for a solid year. I was putting in 68 hours a week. I never really counted the hours until the other day. I don't know how I did it. Sunday was my only day off. I couldn't handle that schedule now. But wait a minute, I'm pretty close to those hours now. We have to do what we can do to get by. We are in good company.
For those of you working two jobs...
back to back, like a full-time 8-5 and then part-time 5-9 or longer, how hard is it to do that? Any tips on not wearing out? TIA
Advice from MTs working two jobs - sm
I am looking to take a part-time position with another company and was wondering if anyone who already does this had any tips on how to get "organized".  I have a choice of days and times, and have tentatively selected a day and time that work is slower at my full time company, so I hope that all goes smoothly, but would appreciate any input from others.  TIA.
working two jobs at same time
Okay, this may be a strange question - but here goes...  Does anybody work two different jobs, are clocked in at the same time with both?   For instance, two different companies, two different computers, clock in with both jobs at the same time, do a couple of documents with one, go to other job and do a couple of jobs, and so on...?
What other jobs allow working at home?

I am thinking of going back to school now, while I have a reasonably good job.  Problem is, because of medical concerns, I have to be able to work from home.  What other options are there for folks like me who find it a requirement to work from home?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

to the lady working 3 jobs.......
I have picked up a 3rd job; maybe.  How do you organize time for all 3?  Right now I work from 10 am to midnight and I am not sure how I can even fit in a 3rd one.
I decided to stop working two MT jobs and just keep the one - sm
but I work at another job totally unrelated to the medical field. I was getting too burnt out doing transcription and the taxes were killing me.
Anybody working two full time jobs
Due to the lack of work (on a regular basis) with my current full time at-home job, I'm considering taking another full time job...7am to 3pm then 3pm to 11pm. I don't know what else to do. I can't afford to go days without meeting minimum line count because there is no work.

Am I nuts to try this?
Go for it instead of working two jobs. Good luck.

You sound exactly like me. I'm working two jobs and my husband is going to school..

I have a 13 and 10-year-old.  I need to make a chore list, but that takes time too.  I seriously do not have five minutes to myself.  I'm working from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and taking the kids to dance and baseball in between.

This weekend should be slower for me.  I think I'll make my husband a chore list too (I bet he'll love that).

Just wanted to let you know that I totally understand what you are going through.

2 jobs here, also back to school, single working mom...sm
hi just me,
i'm rapidly approaching 50 and working 2 jobs (1 FT as MT, 1 PT as virtual assistant)using different programs (50 hours a week total), and going to school PT (10 hours a week), all as a single parent with a house and yard. in addition, i volunteer about 4-6 hours a week. NOT EASY! But, it CAN BE DONE! I think the secret is in motivation, planning and organization. my outlook calendar program looks like a rainbow! (and the task list is pretty daunting at times) =) let me know if you want more advice via email...good luck!
Working 2 full-time jobs (for a year now), and boy am I tired!!
.
Me, too. I told my kids that since they're not in school and I'm working two jobs
just to try to keep the utilities on, they get to do chores. Don't even get me started on holiday stress. My extended family sent me gift cards, so I'm using those to buy for the kids. I even offered to pay them $5 an hour for cleaning so they'd have Christmas money. Instead, what are they doing? Watching TV in their pajamas still. That's OK. I'm about to go unplug all the electronics in the house and give them a big chore list with NO pay.
At 53 working 2 jobs 80 hours a week is impossible. I tried it, it does not work!! (sm)
I have been at this business 30+ years and at one point worked 3 jobs and 2 were for hospital contracts with taxes taken out and the other IC. It gives you no life. My suggestion, if you need the extra $$ work your 40 during the week, then 1 or 2 nights 2 hours and then Sat/Sun 16 hours which would give you 20 hours. That is more than enough and will give you a chance to see if you want to make a job change. Have tried the 2 FT 80 hours and almost had a seizure over it. Remember if your not physically well you cannot do it all!
Meditech is an operating system and Fusion is voice for a dictation system

Printing

If they were to provide you with the ink cartridge then you would have to put it in and out everytime you printed something personal or for someone else.   You will probably go through 1 to 1 1/2 cartridge per year for their printing needs and this is an expense of doing business included in your cpl.   I do all my printing and do probably close to 35,000 to 40,000 lines per month and go through about 2 to 2.5 toners for my HP which is about $200 to $250 per year -- not even $20 per month.  At 10 cents per 60 charcters that is a decent  price and if it is decent lines, pretty good dictators I sure would't rock the boat over that.  Again, if you do they could go elsewhere or else give you a toner and say do not use it for anything else and ask for documentation when you use it.  If you become petty over this, they will become petty.  I just would not start out this way, but then I have been told that I am too easy on accounts but then they have been with me for many, many years, and pay on time and treat me well.   So do what you feel is best but to me it is just being somewhat picky.

Not so...I don't DO printing....at all.

Printing
If they are doing the printing, I guess that may explain why she uses letterhead for every page. They can send all the files to the printer and don't have to worry about having the letterhead paper for page 1 and plain paper for page 2, 3, etc. If that is the case, you might approach them about incorporating the letterhead info in a header on page 1. They could then fill the printer with plain paper, send all the files to the printer, and still have letterhead info print out on page 1.
Charge for printing
I do transcription for a group of physicians out of my home as an IC.  One of the physicians (an Indian doctor) outsources his work (fortunately, in the US), which is fine with me as I have difficulty understanding him.  The office asked today if I could print his notes/envelopes after they're sent back to him and he edits them.  Does anyone have suggestions on what I should charge for this printing?  Thanks for any ideas.
Perfect!...I'm printing this and
memorizing it! Thank you, thank you! This makes so much sense (and with the symphathetic face/tone). It's hard to think straight and think of this when I'm the one in the situation. I'll let you all know how she takes it. Thanks again.
I would do the printing and eat the ink cost - sm
write it off of course. If you can, use a separate ink cartridge just for their stuff and keep track of how fast you go through the ink. If it is excessive, then brink it up possibly and maybe you could bill them a printing charge every time you have to buy a new ink cartridge. But I'd probably just eat it regardless, it is not going to hurt your bottom line much and it helps them out (they save time obviously); the little extras help and you could get more work out of it, who knows.
Printing problems
I recently went digital. My clients are getting set up to print the completed reports. I'm having trouble with one client and their printer that is printing out a little differently than what my printer prints. I use Word 2003, so do they, but our printers are different brands. I've downloaded their printer driver and set them up in my Word. Just wondering if their printer is going to print the files out correctly now that I'm saving their documents with their print driver? Anyone have experience with this and have a solution? I'd appreciate your input!
Printer not printing

My hp LaserJet 1300 will not print what I send to it, however, it does print a page with a single line at the top - ?%-57755}euom%oog/ and so on.

I turned off the printer for 1/2 hour and tried again and it is still doing this.

Any ideas?

Thank you. Barb

printer not printing

Thank you for all the help. I tried everything and then called the place where I bought the printer. Three days of no printing, the morning the tech was due here the thing printed! He came out and determined that we probably had a "brown out" and that something was hung up in memory and it eventually cleared itself. Had a few other questions for him and so I guess the $90.00 for his 45 minutes of time was somewhat worth it!

Printing from this site - sm

When I print something from this site, i.e. a reply, the copy comes out very, very light. Is there a reason for this?

Words printing too small
Trying to type a letter in Microsoft Office Word this morning. Noticed when I first started the print seemed extremely large. Nothing that I know of doing that would have caused this. Used the minimizer and brought the words on screen down some. The writing on the screen in big but when I print it off need a magnifer to read. Tried everything but do not know why it is printing so small. Any suggestions on how to remedy this? Thanks.
Printing AutoCorrect List
Does anyone know how to print the autocorrect list on Microsoft Word 2007?  I've searched it on Google, but I keep getting odd articles that don't make any sense to me at all.  If anyone can explain it to me in layman's terms, I would be forever grateful!  Thanks!
check que - printing might be paused
double click on your printer icon and see where it has your documents to be printed... it should either say printing or printing paused or no documents in que.
Supplies and driving to and from, time printing - no less than .12 cpl.
Why is it that court reports are so well respected and their pay never an issue?

I feel like I am stealing when I ask to be compensated for my knowledge, experience and reliability. It is basically the same work, one is in legal field and one in medical field. What is up with that????

I have been printing my docs reports for six years - sm
I charge $4.50 per page for the original letters. I do not charge for copies because I am averaging about $120 for 30-60 minutes of work for each tape. If I started charging the copies with that, I would be making about $250-300 for 30-60 minutes of work, and my docs just will not pay that kind of money for transcription work that takes 1 hour of my time to do.

Now - trying to find someone to cover for me while I'm on vacation is a nightmare because NO ONE WANTS TO PRINT THE LETTERS. Go figure. How hard is it to print letters. The docs provide all the paper and envelopes and blank paper. I pay about $32/month for ink. But if I'm being paid $600-800/month for my transcription, $32 is practically nothing - a business expense.
Help with Copying and Printing Shorthand Dictionary

I am trying to copy and print my ShortHand Dictionary (the list of expanders) and cannot seem to find the way to do it.  Can anybody help on this one.  By the way, Happy National Transcription Week!

TIA.

Charging for printing/mailing reports
I just spoke to a doc interested in my services and one of the questions he asked was how much I would charge for printing and mailing the reports to him. The cost of paper and shipping is pretty easy to calculate, but the cost of ink as well as my time is a little more difficult. Is there some easy way to calculate this for an estimate or would some of you mind sharing your rates? I appreciate any help or advice on the matter. Thanks!
Make sure it's ok on the receiving end to enlarge. Sometimes it screws up the printing
s
No kidding! I just let that update the other day when I was printing and saving my taxes.
I bet that's what happened.  I will try restoring my computer to a couple days ago and see what happens.  But then I will need to know HOW to save my normal.dot somewhere other than where it is now so this doesn't happen again, because it is SO frustrating and on top of a lousy, lousy day to boot.  Thanks y'all!
Doesn't it give you the option of printing all the forms and schedules?

I did 3 jobs for a while about 3 years ago, you burn out quick, I was doing 3 MT jobs though...after
10 months I cut down to 2 as I don't like to have all my eggs in one basket.  But I am considering going down to 1 in September for my sanity, its a good steady job so financally it should not be an issue.  I have 2 right but have not worked the 1 in about 3 weeks due to some problems at their end, supposed to learn a VA account but not sure if I want to pursue it right now or not, they are waiting to hear from me at this point. I still have a lot going on with chemo, etc. so am mulling things over.  But if you have a full-time day job, then I would just go with 1 part-time MT job at night, unless 1 is during the week, and the other weekends only, then of course you will be working 7 days a week, very tiring I know.  I have been working 7 days a week for 3 years now but I do slack off now and then of course to recharge and get sleep etc. But burnout happens fast and I doubt you want to lose your day job so be careful. Good luck.
Two jobs very common, 3 jobs not unheard of.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but thanks to one or two problem posters, we had no choice but to place the ban until EVS is in place.

Any green tea users out there?

I have tried green tea on 2 separate occasions and both times experienced what appears to be bloody stools with it.  As soon as I stop the intake of the tea, the blood goes away.  I really like the tea as it does a good job of promoting energy and weight loss, but I cannot understand why it causes this reaction.  Would anyone have any idea why this happens?  Is there another natural energy booster I can try?  Thanks for any and all help.

It is MQ-wide for DQS users?
Well, I sure would hope it would be for SE's too, as some of us also use DQS.  I havent heard anything, nor gotten a letter or check..Im wondering is it MQ-wide?  All of MQ that uses DQS?  Or could it be just certain regional offices did not have the count of lines set up right?
TransNet users
1.  Have long have you been using TransNet?  Is it hard to learn?

2.  Does it work with Word 2003?

3.  Do you d/l the files through a modem or through a cable or DSL line?

4.  If you have a cable or DSL line ... how long would it take for you to download, say, all of the Alta Bates or Sequoia reports. I ask about those only because I can translate that into lines in my head. IOW, "it takes 1 hour to d/l a full day of Alta Bates." This way I could figure out where things would stand on one of the accounts I work on.

5.  Would you rather use TransNet or C-phone? Why (whatever your choice is) <-- this is the critical question, so feel free to go into detail

6.  What happens if you've download a batch of files and your hard drive crashes? Are those files gone forever or are the "originals" still on the master system?

Flashtype users?
I recently downloaded Flashtype expander.  I like the set up of being able to put in what I want but I am having trouble with capitalization.  I work in Meditech and the CAPS status sometimes changes for no reason.  This program is also suppose to print in all CAPS if wanted but this does not happen either except only occasionally.  It also does not capitalize the word at the beginning of a sentence if it is typed so such as Copd, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.  It does all lower case.  Is there something I can do or is just a program error or is it just using it with certain programs such as Meditech?
