This is what I would do. (sm)

I would buy a book on how to pass the GED, and teach the areas that the GED tests on.  I haven't seen a GED test in some time, but I believe it covers math, science, reading...a little bit of everything.

Spend a couple of years, till the kid is 16 or so, working on the test and the studies around the test, but DO NOT TAKE THE TEST.  Then I would look into the community colleges in the area, also tech colleges are good, and see what areas interest your child.  MANY schools offer highschool diploma/GED training courses that combine a high school diploma with training for a trade.  If I had to do it over again, that's definitely what I would have done.  It's wonderful in a lot of ways.  One is that it's FREE if they don't have their GED or diploma YET (that's why I say don't take the test.  Just teach what's required for the GED because it's a good overall "general" list of what you need to know as an adult), and secondly, it's good because they are not only finishing up high school but also being trained to do something by the time they're 18.  It's a win-win situation.

If I had a 9th grader, that's what I would do (assuming I had the time to spend several hours a day working on general info included in the GED handbook).

Good luck to you!
