You should make it clear to the physician that
there will be an editing charge for any changes or additions once a report has been completed and submitted. I charge an hourly rate for such.
Basically, you make a projection of what you think you will clear for the year.
Then figure what the tax due on that amount would be and break it into four payments. There is a worksheet out there from the IRS the helps you to do this. Your state income and local taxes should also be paid quarterly and would be based on the same $$ amount.

The first year of IC is the hardest to guess because you will have deductions that you may not even be aware of but I would strongly encourage you to go IC!! I love it, despite the drawbacks as some posted below.

As a true IC, you decide when to work, how much you charge and don't let anyone else tell you that the clients you do work for have the right to dictate your work hours to you. Some have referred to working for a company or companies; if that's what you do and they dictate to you your hours, you're NOT an IC but an employee and therein lies the problem with scheduling.

There are way too many people out there who apparently think they are ICs when, in fact, they are employees. The companies that are telling them when to work, how much they will pay, are flat out wrong if they think they can call these people IC and then dictate the above parameters. Just make sure that the advice you are receiving regarding IC is actually from someone who really knows and understands what an IC is.
I'm sorry I didn’t make myself clear. As an employee I can only work 40 hours per week (sm)
Overtime has to be approved by manager. I have always been an SE and could work as many hours as I wanted to, such as when I had a day of bad dictators I could work until I got my daily line count. Just wondering if all states had this law. I am working in CA.
Me, too. Can't make money if you can't put lines on the page. nm

New MTs entering this profession
I don't think it is so much about MTs being all for themselves.

Virtually every newbie needs a great deal of QA support. It is costly. The first urgency of this field is turn-around-time. Slowing down TAT because all of your reports have to be QA'd costs. Having to stop and give you feedback so you don't continue in the same path slows QA down ... again, TAT suffers and this costs. Newbie work needs the QA because quality is the 2nd urgency of this business.

So, it's not your coworkers fault. Not really the MT service companies' fault either. This is the nature of this very competitive business.

It's always better for newbies to go to work inhouse in a hospital and get their experience before working from home. You have to be really self-sufficient to work from home and make it profitable for both yourself and your employer.

Re-entering the MT Field

After being out of MT for 4.5 years I have recently returned.  I'm having a hard time finding the right fit.  The biggest problem I'm seeing is everybody seems to be requiring headers for reports and then each report put in a separate document, due to the new electronic record.  I find that this slows me way, way down.  Maybe I'll eventually get used to it, but I sure do miss the days of one document for doctor's day's work.  There are so many procedural details that I can't just sit and transcribe.  I've also run into very poor voice file sound quality.

I worked in the field for 14 years and never had major problems adjusting to new accounts.  Maybe my time is just over for this type of work.

I know technology has definitely made MT easier in some ways, but in others, it seems like such hassle.  Does anyone else have problems with headers and all these separate documents?  Does the field seem to be worse now than 5 years ago?

If doctors are entering into it, SM
I suspect maybe you really should get out and take a calm undemanding 9-5 type job. Perhaps you could come back later when things in this industry stabilize.

For now, though, this field is in technology- and economics-driven flux, with uncertainty the norm. What is certain is that this is going to continue for some time, during which some people will end up leaving the field altogether even as others adjust to what's thrown at them, retraining or continuing their education as needed.

If you took a second job, I'm afraid the problems you're having with this sistuation with one company would just become the same problems doubled. And let's face it, part-timers are not usually more valued employees than full-timers. Best wishes.
Of course, it is only as good as the people entering the data...
Also, when computers make mistakes, or are hit with malicious worms or viruses, etc., it could be devastating, could it not?

Also, more and more lately we are noticing actually a lot more mistakes with things that are automated, and once there is an error, it has been extremely difficult to get it corrected. Such as - errors at the DMV (?), errors in our car computer (? - again, it is always a mystery when trying to get things fixed), lets see, then there is the mixup with our phone number that belongs to about three other people (still not fixed because we are told it is all done on computer (?)...

Also, who takes responsiblity when there is an error, because with everything automated, there seems to be little or no accountability - you can hardly get through to real people in a lot of businesses today.

The idea of technology is awesome; however human error will always have an affect...

my humble opinion and just an observation. most information still has to be entered by humans. perhaps we will be obsolete.
Donation

 Hi,

I wish to donate $20 to this most admirable cause and I do not wish to get anything in return.  Please tell me how to donate?  E-mail me please, at the address of ksmith30@new.rr.com

thanks

Donation

Can you either email me with the information on how to do a donation or post the info here?

Thanks

Sheri, Just made a donation.  While the offer of sending the software was a very nice gesture, you do not need to send me anything.  Have a very Merry Christmas.  Renee
Donation
I am heartened by the quick response of so many to donate to this cause, but I am also dishearted by so much skepticism out there at this situation. I am a skeptic too, but if someone needs help, we should all be more than willing to help out. What if it was you or your kids?? Would you want skepticism to keep your kids from having at least a little something under the tree? Follow your hearts, not your egos from having had a bad experience or two in life. We all have had those. Merry Christmas to all who have contributed so far! and to those who still will. :^) Kathy S.

Equipment Donation
Does anyone know of a tax charity to donate Lanier transcription equipment?
donation is voluntary...I did not pay either. nm
nm
do you think there will be some type of donation drive?
the post office usually sets up spots for donations, or lets you leave items for them to pick up. my heart was so moved when they did this in our area for the tsunami victims, and driving around seeing all the bags of donated goods made me almost cry.

something I noticed was that mostly the lower to middle class (still exist?) left items. their neighborhoods were full of bags of goods at their mailboxes for the tsunami victims.
Cards that say donation to charity sm
St. Jude's Children Hospital has them, it reads that a gift to the hospital has been given to the hospital in their honor. Very nice, not too personal and no hint that some return gift is expected.
Finally steady money. whew. Applied and got job at Dept of Law Enforcement entering

They started me way above minimum because of my experience.  I was shocked and happy all at the same time.

And of course I'm esctatic to not be wondering how much money I would be getting each pay check.  Working on production in transcription now is like playing Russian Roulette.

There's good benes where I going, retirement, sick days, no games with my health insurance.  I should have done this long ago.

Scarry!!! Docs and nurses entering drugs and dosages into online charts. (sm)

Most of my docs cannot spell medical terms.  They can't pronounce or spell drugs.  The nurses are for the most part useless - no ARNP I ever asked could help me with a medical term.

I just spoke to my HMO.  They are now offering personal Online-charts showing

visits, tests, immunizations, etc. of what you personally had done.

I asked EXACTLY HOW DOES THIS INFO GET INTO THE SYSTEM, at what point?

The woman said:  It is input by the doc and the nurses.

I shuttered!

There goes the end of quality health care as we used to know it!

Personal page/web page resource
Paula,

Thanks a lot for sharing these great websites!
Besides, that donation is squarely out of MTs' pockets. I haven't had a raise in the 3 years
x
People have no patience anymore. I gave a $10.00 donation and I got an email the next evening.

I think since these people also have a transcription service, no one should expect an instant response.  Besides, it's more about giving than getting anyway.

Care to share the charity that doesn't pester after receiving a donation? x

Breaking news. Bush directs H. Rita to Texas in order to curb illegal Mexicans from entering border.
LOL
Yep, $2.00 a page and the page has about 30-40 lines on it nm

NJ $3 page, though I have heard as low as $1 page.

When I worked for a national, up thru 2 years ago, I was getting $1.75 page and heard they got $4.

can we clear this up once and for all?

What does pulling number XX mean ?  I noticed now it also says "click on the reply by email link" whereas before it said "click on the blue link" which had me confused also.  There were quite a few blue words but no blue link except back to Main Board.

Just to be clear
I have been using NCMT as my screen name on this site for quite some time. I don't know who the other NCMT is that made the post above, but it wasn't me. I personally do not care for Kikki and her negative outlook on everything.
Since it is very clear--sm
That the beloved Ms. Kikki is back and really trying to cause havoc again on this board with her rude comments to everyone, I can only suggest that we do not take her bait and give her fuel for fire.  She seems to have it is for a select few on this board and also seems to love to  attack what people eat.  Maybe if we do not acknowledge her rude comments, she will get tired of it and go away again.  Either that, or we all stop posting anything for a day or two and she will have nothing to make rude nasty comments on.  Just a thought.  If we stick together, maybe we can get her to leave.
yes there are some that don't even try to be clear

and you can get really fed up sometimes. On the other hand, there are plenty of native speaker doctors who make me mad too!  Some of the ESLs are really good. Better a good ESL doc than an American mumbler

Also, was it not clear that...
the site was resold again to someone else?  This is old news...
Well that;s clear as mud. nm

Clear something up for me, please...sm
Do you mean editing as in QA, or editing voice/speech recognition work?  I thought QA positions were paid hourly.  Someone correct me if this is wrong.  If you mean editing voice recognition work, then that pay is too low.  Actually, it is too low for QA, too, IMO.
You are not clear at all. Look around for what?
She is looking for a macro and you're telling her "it's" a setting somewhere in options or customize. ????? Before you get your dander up again, you might try explaining exactly what she should be looking for.
What are you talking about? Be a bit more clear.
IC?  New pay?  QA?  WTF?
LOUD AND CLEAR
and let us not forget the nonresponsive e-mails when one does inquire as to where their lines are going. Take the old server down here and there and lose 300 LINES A DAY. YES, WE LOVE IT! NOT
Do you want everybody to clear the board for you? sm
Jump in and bring up a topic. :)
I should've been more clear.
I'm saying I'm okay because I have several plans I'm working on and several people are helping me. All it took was calling my parents. My Dad gave me so much confidence and made me remember who I am or used to be. I am going in for some counseling and more planning will take place then. He sold his truck a few weeks ago, so we are down to my truck. He stated that he won't leave without a vehicle. I going to be pushing very hard for him to find one and that will give him more incentive to leave. He has come to realize that we are not a good match. I have neglected to mention that when he is calm, he is actually okay. He was stirred up lately because I contacted my daughter's family for the first time since she was born. I knew this would upset him, but I didn't care. She needed that. I realize that you are all just trying to look out for me and that is why I posted originally. It seems some of you are turning on me and that's okay too. I think I was in panic-mode when I posted the first time and the finer points of what I was saying were missed. The emotional abuse has been worse on me and my kids than the physical. They were not even here yet last time it happened. The incident two weeks ago was because I was forcing a trip to see my daughter's family. He doesn't handle the step-father part very well. I will stop posting if it will make everyone more comfortable, but I did want to acknowledge those of you that helped me clear my head. I will be going to church this weekend. He will be speaking to the minister. He will be on his own if things don't improve with counseling. I may not have all of your support, but the support of my grandparents and my parents is much more important to me. Thanks again. Sorry if I offended anyone's sensibilities. I obviously have. Bye. Jodie :)
Please Clear Up Questions
What brand keyboard do you actually have? I was looking at the Kinesis Maxim and it does not completely come apart but stays hooked at the top.
The problem is when it's not clear

whether it applies to you or not. Such as the statement: "You are leaving too many blanks." How many blanks are "too many?" In what circumstances?

I think it is just a lazy way of supervising - just send it to everyone instead of dealing with the individual culprits.

And, no, I don't consider that "communication."

Isn't it pretty clear?

You say you'll have set hours to work.  If your baby needs a didee change or a bottle during those hours, or if he/she's just cranky and needs to be picked up and loved, what are you going to do?  If you're a normal mother, you're going to stop working and take care of your child.  So that pretty much answers your question, doesn't it.

I will never understand why some people think they can work at home with an infant.  After all, if you worked outside the home and took your infant with you and he needed attention, you'd have to stop your work and tend to him there, so the fact remains, unless one is superhuman, they cannot work and take care of a child at the same time.  Pretty clear cut!

your post is not clear - what exactly are you trying to do?
x
Thanks for making that clear
I wouldn't want to offend the wrong person. So sorry. but to the other NCMT, I meant every word. :^)
I wasn't clear about that - what I mean was that - sm
more likely than not, they'll get ripped off on their minute-counts, dinged for nonexistent 'mistakes', or have some of their pay 'skimmed', as has been complained about in so very many posts throughout this website, and by too many companies to count. I suppose the truly honest employers in MT can probably be counted on half the fingers of one hand.

You're right about 'weighted' dictators, and it's actually a good thing. I think if a doctor is a difficult dictator to transcribe, he should be weighted, and in addition to paying the MT more to type him, the hospital should be charged more to transcribe him. If it cost them more to have the garbage-work transcribed, maybe somewhere down the road all those ESL doctors right off the boat from somewhere else won't look like such a good deal, after all.
All clear and no ESLs, only wish
I would be in 7th heaven if this were the case. I have my share of ESLs but the ones I have the VR picks them up much better sometimes than our English ones. I have no clue why? One English physician I think really good, the VR fails on this one??? I have some dictators (as probably all do) who talk with speaker phones, snort and go on but I am very pleased with VR and really love.
