You have no obligation to assist in college payment.

Posted By: lay down the law on 2005-12-29
In Reply to: Anyone else with an 18-year-old - with an attitude?

I don't understand why so many parents these days insist on handing their kids an education while going into debt over it. My nephew had to work and find scholarships to go to college. My Dad worked the railroad to pay for his college. I'm still paying for my own college, and I've got a kid ready to start college in two years. I told him I'm not paying for it. He needs to get his grades up, find some scholarships, and work. You don't appreciate something you don't earn.

Your son will get a reality check when his bills are due.

I would say your obligation
depends on his attitude and your ability and willingness to assist.  I honestly believe that most kids whose parents put them through college do not appreciate it.  I have a son who put himself through a 2-year community college program.  He now does computer programming and is making good money.
You have no obligation to send something
you've worked hard to create to some stranger just because you are asked to do so. You don't need to waste your time creating anything else to send to appease them, either. If you feel you must respond, simply decline politely. You do not need to offer an explanation beyond, "I'm sorry, I'm afraid I cannot do that." They may try to make you feel guilty. Don't let them. You owe them nothing. Just ignore them. You were able to create your shortcuts, dictionary entries, or whatever else you've done to make your work easier. There is no reason others cannot do the same for themselves. They are way out of line to try to get you to hand over your hard work so they can avoid expending any effort. Just tell them "No".
ethically, you have an obligation to report this.

Look at your 1040 and you will see that your taxes owed include SS and Federal.  So when you make your estimates it is only one check.

non payment

infovision software, Kolkata, is not paying my dues (salary + others), resigned during Feb, now it April, Can any good fellow suggest anything?  Not only me there are at least 50 MTs i know , who are also not paid after working with them.

payment for VR
So the account I work on has just purchased a voice recognition software.  I see that a lot of the VR is paying about 4.5 to 5 ( and higher ) cents per line.  Does this include the whole line or just the editing corrections you actually do for them?  Please tell me that it is all the lines on the page.  How could it be calculated any other way?  I actually don't know yet if I will even be getting the installation as there are a lot of MTs working on this account & don't see how there could possibly be enough room for all of us.  I might just have to work in another part-time job.  Thanks.
Payment

Just wondering what alternatives there are when you don't get paid for work that was done and it's been months!!!!  Two people (individual MTs) owe me money from back in February and I can't get them to respond, etc.  HELP!!

Just ask for payment - with interests
1 .If you have no contracts - you have been doped.
2. If you have a contract -
Use it legally.
3. Stop all transcriptions at once until they have paid.
4. Report to the AAMT the incident with the contract, work loads, time and date.

Our expenses for the month are about 5-6K per month.
MTSO payment
I am a very small MTSO as most are aware and I always pay my gals prior to mortgage, electric or anything.  But I also want you guys to know that all of these fringes that you guys want, 800 numbers, direct deposit, etc. cost us money and the more money we have to put out the less money we can pay you.  I do not feel that you should be so upset about direct deposit, if you get you checked maile don time and it takes the mail 2-3 days you have to allow for that in your budget.    I do  not make that much off my IC's 2 to 3 cents per line and I put in a lot of work to make that 2 to 3 cents per line.  We have expenses to cover also.  If we charge our accounts more, they will look elsewhere or over to India they go.  So we have to charge fairly to the accounts and pay you guys fairly also.  Remember the saying -- until you walk a mile in my shoes, don't critize.  I am seriously thinking about cutting back to working only for myself, making enough to cover my bills and retirement fund and let go of a couple of accounts and gals as it gets quite hectic balancing the amount of work -- either too much or not enough -- payments,  QA, decent help and just keeping my sanity.  So that is where I am probably headed after the first of the year.   I think I simply want to be responsible for just me in this coming year.   Hope all have a Merry Christmas.
It is a scam. I got one that says I never sent payment and they
are going to report me, but it doesn't say what the item is.  I've also gotten one where someone says they are trying to Paypal me money but it won't go through and I don't have any items pending.    If ever in doubt never click on a link in an e-mail but go directly to the website and enter/view any information there.
Billing/payment
On my larger accounts I close out on the 25th to 28th, since I keep daily line counts in an Excel program, I print that out, do my bill in Quick Books, get the bill to clients by 28th to 29th, I give a 1% discount on my larger accounts if they pay within 48 hours and they do so I have my checks always by the 1st.   I have two smaller accounts that I bill on the 15th so I have cash flow throughout the month.  I have never been stiffed, they have never been late, they never question my line counts and always write thank you on the invoice.   This works for me.  I know everyone says don't give away 1% as a discount but it works for me so I do it.
Non or late payment
Just giving all MTs out there that a company called med-tech is not paying or paying their employees late.  I have done some research on them and have found severla employees complaining of this.
Non or late payment
Gosh! We work hard enough for peanuts as it is!
with what you are getting in terms of payment...

I barely make $5 for 8 hours.. you think that's fair. .. cause I sure *&%# don't.

Thank you!! I did request a stop payment and a nm
wire transfer or overnight but have had no response yet but it hasn't been that long either. Waiting for a response. I did email someone else who also works for them but no response from that yet either. My point is exactly as you said, being a week late, i am in deep trouble and it has costed me a lot as i go from check to check so like me and my kiddos are starving waiting on this check, lol. on the other hand, i make good money with this acct and don't want to tick them off as i love this acct but i am in a bind needing my money.

Make a tax payment every pay period online.
I use the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System because I also am incapable of saving money. When I deposit my paycheck, I immediately go online and transfer a percentage of my check to the IRS. You can do it weekly, biweekly, quarterly--anytime you choose. It requires setting up an account with your SS# or tax ID#. Then you designate a bank account to be debited. They snail mail you a password and PIN about a week later. As soon as you receive your PIN, you're set to go. When you make a payment, you're given a confirmation number. The system records each payment and the date it was processed so you have a record of all your payments and the date the payment was made when you organize your tax info at the end of the year.
My mortgage payment is nearly that much. Ten year loan.

Dud you send a demand payment letter? sm
You can find a sample one by Googling.

If you do win in small claims court, the judgement will give you legal ways to collect. For example, having the sheriff put liens on bank accounts, using a collection agency, etc.

Good luck to you. I have been in your shoes and, fortunately, the demand payment letter worked for me.
Mortgage late payment question. sm
I have 18 months left on my 30 year mortgage, roughly 4K left.  If I don't pay my February 1st payment until March 2nd, is it likely they will demand the whole 4K immediately?  Just broke right now.
Beg, borrow, or steal not to have that payment be late!!!
It does not matter how little you have left on it.  Late is late in my opinion.
agree - haven't had a car payment in years
paid $6000 cash for a 93 Volvo wagon back in 2002.  Too many people think they need a new (or pricey) vehicle and really have better things to do with their $400-600 per mo. Every time I look into getting something new or simply newer, I decide that I neither want to take that much money out of savings,  nor do I want to have such an outrageous car payment.  I would totally prefer a brand new car, but it seems like such a waste of money.
Try calling back about a payment agreement.

deal with compared to my state department of revenue!  I owed taxes over $10,000 in taxes two years in a row to the IRS, so over $20,000, and they let me make payments on it and I got it paid off.  I also got the INTENT TO LEVY notices, but when I called and set up a payment agreement they stopped with the threats.

Right now I owe the IRS about $5000 and when I called to set up payments I asked them if I could make payments of $150 a month and they accepted that without question.  I was a little afraid to suggest such a small amount, but they took it.

Now my state department of revenue is much meaner than the IRS.  They told me to pay what I owe them in six months or else.  They put a lien on my house.  They will only accept payments if I take the total and divide by 6 and pay that amount each month (impossible for me to pay that much) so I am just in a holding pattern seeing if they are bluffing or if they really are going to do something.

I'd say if you really have nothing of value the IRS can get, then it is to their advantage to work with you.  I think you just got a bad agent.  Call back and try to get another one that will work with you.

How I solved the late payment issue -

- with most clients I started subtracting a certain amount (or free of charge) for each report that I turned around late (far and few between) even for circumstances out of my control, while at the same time charging them late payment fees.  I also started accepting credit cards.

Thank you. As long as we accept payment like that, they will continue to do it.
If we do not accept jobs that pay without spaces, then they will realize that we are not going to continue to do something for nothing. How many of you do several things throughout the day at no charge? Now this...
Prepaid Visa Card for payment

Has anyone used a prepaid Visa card for receiving payment for work?  Is this safe?  Thanks

No you are not! I'm a single mom and I'm trying to make a house payment, pay utilities.... SM

buy groceries, and provide for my two kids all on one paycheck.  I recently got a job doing QA and getting paid per hour and that has helped me tremendously, but I know how it is to scrape by on 8 cpl, low line counts due to a number of factors that work against us (high ESL accounts, technical difficulties, and interruptions).  It isn't worth shelling out $300 for certification when you get very little in return not to mention the $300 could be better spent on clothes for the kids or to pay the electric bill or to buy groceries, etc.

We should be treated better than slave labor!  It's ridiculous and very discouraging to say the least.  Hang in there!  I've been studying coding on my own and I'm about confident enough to take the CCS exam.  After that, I may move on to RHIT, but that means back into the office.  So we'll see.

Agree, checks not definitive proof of payment.

Send him a certified letter with bill demanding payment within
within five days from receipt (make it RRR). You have your proof that you notified him. If it is not picked up or signed for, you have your proof that occurred to. All these things go in your favor when trying to collect money. that's just a starter. I would never have let him get away with it this long. Once would have been it.
Dell will finance at a very reasonable rate, just bought one and my payment is $50 a month with no i
just start charging interest. I am using my IC job to pay it off. Medquist does furnish computer, Amphion furnishes but with a monthly fee that is refunded at the end of a year's employment, I think.
Send a letter of demand payment (check Nolo Law websites) - sm
to find any legalese you may want to include on it), and send it via Registered Mail, so that she must sign for it and you will get a receipt proving she received it. If she doesn't pay by your demand date, file a claim at Small Claims Court. Very inexpensive, and if she doesn't pay, and doesn't show up at court (in your state), you win by default. If still no payment, you can return to Small Claims and put a lien on her car, her house, anything you want, which can be forcibly confiscated by the Sheriff and then you can sell it to recoup the money owed to you.
I'm in college myself ...
Do you have an undergraduate bulletin from the U? If not, GET ONE TODAY. Look at the degree programs. He must pick out a major and register and be assigned an Academic Advisor first.

Make sure he fills out his FASFA anyway and has it sent to the university. Just because you make $40K does not mean he should not qualify for grants or scholarships whatsoever. I don't know who told you that or if you just are assuming that, but it is not true.
A university has many, MANY avenues for financial aid. He will be assigned a financial aid counselor and you need to call up there right now, TODAY (if he is planning on attending this fall semester in about 5 weeks) and go talk to the immediately. Do you know the FASFA website? Have you filled it out? You MUST fill it out, it will be processed and sent to the university, then they will send him an award letter and you can go from there.

Now, student loans are not bad debt at all. It is an investment in your future. Just make sure you are borrowing responsibly an amount that can be paid back easily. As well, it will not hurt him one bit to pay his own student loans back and/or you pay just part of them. He should have to be payint and investing in his OWN future.

He probably needs to find a part-time job, period. Nothing wrong with that. It will teach him discipline and show you whether he is serious about an education or not. If he has registered already (and he should have if he is attending this fall ... if he hasn't and wants to go, REGISTER TODAY)...you know when his classes are and he can hit the pavement today on finding a part-time job.

You've have a bad experience as far as academic counseling at the junior college -- at least from your description, I would call that near idiocy. At the U, he will have to claim a major and it should have a sports program so that should not be a problem. Do NOT---NOT---NOT---NOT just "put him in a major". This is his education. It must be what HE wants.

There's not a lot you can do until you:
1) Fill out that FASFA and process it
2) Call the U, physically go in with your son and see a Financial Aid Advisor
3) Register, see your Academic Advisor and get your classes

If I can help you in anyway, let me know.
I had it in college
I went for PT - they did u/s and massage and heat application. Also, I received medication via (I am going to get this wrong I think) iontophoresis.

I had to change the way I held my food trays (I was a waitress) and do some exercises with a one pound weight.

It resolved with cessation of what was causing the problem in the first place. Every so often it comes close to flaring back up if I am not careful. Now my big problem is mild tendinitis in my thumb .

I never needed surgery though I have heard some people do if it gets really bad.

Did they do the Finklestein test (is that what its called?) on you to dx it? Its where they have you make a fist and then they flex your wrist down. I yelped and almost kicked the dr!

Good luck.
What did you go to college for? nM
x
I was in college before
I attended college off and on from 1989 - 1997. It will only take me a year to complete what I started.
college or not (I did) - what you do....sm

What a person does for their entire lifetime is a career, a profession.  Some of us went to college, some graduated, some never went to college.  Who cares?  I spent 27 years doing this so yep, it has become my profession......worked Wall Street for 3 years in the 60s-70s, well that was my profession at the time (decade).  Worked restaurants as a kitchen manager for 5 years - that was my profession during those 5 years and what a chef I am....*LOL*

Worked in a major teaching hospital for 10 years PRIOR to doing full-time MT work.....so yep - the medical profession is my profession and I'm a paraprofessional !!!

Dream on..........

For College - sm
You may want to check with the school. At FSU, your laptop needs to have specific programs/capabilities if you want to take it to class with you to use in class, and also to download from their blackboard on the internet.

My tech also agrees Toshibas are the best and I was lucky that the Toshiba was compatible with many of the requirements.
college or not
I graduated in 2004 with an Associate Degree in Medical Office Administration, Office Systems Technology, when I was 18 yrs. old I went to nursing school and then worked a few years as an LPN. I don't regret my college or degrade college in any way, but, most employers want an experienced MT but won't give anyone a chance to prove that someone just starting out can do the job.I am now 50 years old, taking care of my disabled husband and CAN NOT get a job at home working as a medical transcriptionist, and can't afford to take the extra tutoring that some suggest. I would just like a chance to make a living, not a bunch of money, just enough to pay my bills.
They are not gone...they just went to college--sm
They will be around more than you think....when they need money...when they need their laundry done...and, of course, holidays. They will miss you too, I am sure. You won't be nearly as lonely as you think you are going to be. lol
College

I have 2 kids in college, one I helped on the front end and because of this career, one I will have to help on the back end (meaning help him pay off his loans while he is in school instead of giving him money up front).  The Stafford loans have very low interest rates right now, the rates went down.  I live in Western NY and there are 2 MT jobs that I know of at one hospital.  The other hospitals don't have inhouse transcriptionists.  One uses a service (used to be my competitor) and they are giving all new residents laptops for EMR and the other gave all their doctors laptops 2 years ago.  I'm tired of MTing to be honest, 10-12 hour days, 7 days a week, first as MTSO as qualified people were hard to come by and then because either the service didn't pay, didn't pay on time or didn't have any work so I have needed to work for more than one.  I would love to do anything else.

Thanks - I have 1 in college and 1 soon to be..nm

Request that they place a stop payment on the check, reissue, and mail priority or overnight mail
If they refuse or invent unbelievable excuses, you'll know you have a problem. If MY check was a week late, there are many months I would be in deep trouble.
I realize checks occasionally do get lost in the mail. If they are 100% sure it was mailed, then they shouldn't mind issuing another.

Be firm and be persistent.
kid drinks in college
And what are you gonna do if you kid does drink at college??  Kidnap him/her and deprogram them?  They are adults when they are in college.  I would hope by the time a child gets to be 17, 18, they have been taught right from wrong and no I would not want to know if my child was partying and drinking in college.  They are living a normal young adults life.  I would want to know he/she is having fun and doing their studies and, of course, if they became a drug addict or alcoholic, they I will be there but normal partying for young adults, Im okay with that..better than being tied to my apron strings.
