I read a post awhile back about fast dictators and the settings for Express scribe to slow them down without distorting the voice but I can't find it now. Can anyone help?

I am also thinking of getting my CMT. I have heard it is a really hard test though. In the future, when things get rougher and we may have to branch out or go another direction, at least that will be a symbol for employers that we know our stuff. Most employers, even hospitals, do not have the opinion that CMT is a worthless initial. Looking at the many jobs that post "CMT preferred," I would say the perception out there is that it is a good thing.
I just simply told you where to find your answer.
If you're so sensitive and need to be handfed, perhaps you need to call support or something.

clicking on your post to see an answer was a waste of time
nm
You don't give enough information for ANYONE to answer this post intelligently.
Try including more information like what makes a line, TAT, georgraphic location. Otherwise, if you're truly an IC, only you should determine what your time is worth.
I meant to answer your post earlier, but I've been trying to catch up on

housework before school starts.  I cannot WAIT for school to start.  I'm so tired of the kids' bickering and attitudes this summer.  They've taken to ignoring me whenever I ask them to do anything.  I threaten them with grounding, loss of privileges, or slave duty.  Then they bicker about who did more chores or who made the mess to begin with.  Instead of cleaning up after them, I leave it sit until their Dad gets home.  If they don't want to listen to me, they'll darn well listen to him.

They are usually really good kids.  I think it's mostly cabin fever because a lot of their friends went on vacation or stayed with their biological Dads for the summer.  The kids are so bored.  I'm just so tired of it every summer.  I have all these grand plans for finishing work early and doing something fun each day, but I get the same garbage every year.  Too many kids over here, too many interruptions, too much bickering, too much mess.

Let me tell you, I'm celebrating on the first day of school.  I'm going to the coffee shop and buying a big mocha latte.  Then I'm going to sit there all by myself and read a book.  On the way home, I'm grabbing lunch for myself and watching a chick flick by myself.  No McDonalds either.

Answer to finding job x15 years experience and not so funny post!

How childish!  Just another embarrassing post by an American MT !!!

Answer to all recent posts . . . sm . . . and my own summarization of reasons as to the first post -
To the poster accusing me of lying (SEE MESSAGE):

I am not. However, I have to mention that I have been working at least 20 hours of OT a pay period. My end amount for the month before taxes is about $2200 (give or take a few hundred depending on how much OT I can work).

Thus, I take home from that about $850 per pay check. That is $1700 a month of take home pay. Like I said in my first post, my husband is able to bring home some money. So with his help, our monthly income is about $1900 after taxes and benefits.

Below is the list of our expenses in a month. Obviously, we are not living comfortably and are pinching ever penny we have, but we are still making it.

House - $1350/mo
Phone Bill - $80/mo
Electric - $125/mo
Heat - $110/mo
Diapers - $40/mo
Gas - $50/mo
Food - $140/mo

Total - $1895/mo

I know the food amount seems low, but we grew all our own vegetables during the summer and have a connection with relatives on farms for eggs, chicken, and beef. We have made an effort to keep our bills as low as possible.

Next poster (My Take):
Yes, $11.50/hr is very low. However, if I were to go outside the home with my education, I wouldn't be able to find a job at more than maybe $16.00/hr. Yes that is quite a bit more than $11.50/hr, however, that does not include the $$$ that I would be having to pay to put my son into day care and does not include the $$$ that I would be spending on gas (would have to travel about 100 miles a day to find a job that pays that much). All that added up, ends up making my horrible pay of $11.50/hr equal to or greater than the $16.00/hr pay. I do not consider myself to be working for peanuts. I could make more if I wanted, but I chose to have family benefits, an employee status, and produce work that I can be proud of (not that I am saying those of you making more money than I aren't producing good work, I just know if I rush too much, I tend to miss things that I wouldn't had I slowed down and took my time). In the position I am at right now, I can easily make $24/hr, but because I tend to make more mistakes at this pace, I choose to slow down and send out great work. I wouldn't want my medical record to be incorrect. I completely understand that there aren't many, who would like to be in my situation, I am just trying to show people that you actually can live off of lower pay, whether you want to admit it or not. I do know that where you live makes a big difference, but if I have to chose between a roof over my family's head and food on the table versus living in a certain area, you better believe I will chose my family.

Next Poster (Hawaii MT):
Hawaii is a much more expensive place to live. I don't think I could be an MT and live there due to that fact. However, I wouldn't put myself in that situation. Your post is correct, I don't think you could live off of $11.50/hr down there, which is why if that was all I was bringing in, I would have to move. Better to be miserable and support my family than be happy but not have a house or food to eat. IMHO. In regards to clothes, I am lucky because I have my sister, who gives me the stuff she doesn't want any more. I haven't bought one article of clothing for myself in 5 years now. In reference to your next post about moving and then moving back, that is was your decision to put yourself in that situation of living in a more expensive area. Thus if you aren't making enough to survive, isn't it your fault then? Why complain about the industry? Granted, I am not sure if you are one to be complaining, but just my thoughts.

Next Poster (MTT):
I never said I was doing well off of $11.50/hr. In fact, I am not doing well at all, just getting buy, but I am able to make it, so that is why I am happy. I can't believe you make almost as much as a nurse. You must be awesome. Nurses in my area make $35/hr minimum. I do, however, agree that the lack of pay raises in this industry is frustrating. The more experience I have, the less my pay seems to be. I went from making almost $14/hr with a local hospital to $11.50/hr with an MTSO, but didn't have a choice, so made it work.

Next Poster (MT):
I know you can't live in California or New York on my wages. However, if I were living in those areas and making what I make, I would be working 2 to 3 jobs if I felt I absolutely had to continue to live in those areas. I doubt I would do that though. I would much rather live a more comfortable lifestyle somewhere that is less expensive.

Next Poster (thought about moving?):
My thoughts exactly. For those complaining about their wages and the cost of living being so much, I don't understand why they complain, when there are other options. JMHO.

Next Poster (50 miles inland):
Florida is cheaper than California, as well as a lot of the southern and east coasts.

Next Poster (income):
My rent went from $500/mo 3 years ago to $1350/mo once I bought a house. This was my choice, but I know what it is like to feel a shock from rising payments. I have adjusted to this though, and actually since our payments have gone up, our income has gone down by over half of what it used to be. Not much fun, but the whole point of my original post was to let people know that it still can be done, just that sometimes drastic measures have to be taken. I don't know of many who can get their income to go up, so instead of complaining about how low it is all the time, why not do something about the extra expenses you do have?

Next Poster (I would be happy at $25/hr too):
If you can't afford to live off of what you are making and you live in a high cost area, then what I meant by reevaluate your lifestyle might actually be that if you want to continue as an MT because of all the other perks, you might have to sacrifice and move so that you can afford to live while working as an MT. That would be one way of reevaluating if you can't afford to live like you currently are on your pay. Personally, I wouldn't be moving. I would be finding a different job or getting more jobs. I like where I live.

The basic point of my post is that there is no point in complaining about how "little you make". If you don't make enough money to "survive", then you should be looking at either a new job, another job, or finding a place where you can "survive" off of what you currently make. There is no point in coming on these boards to complain about your "horrible pay or no raises" when you are making twice as much as a lot of people. Besdies with the economy right now, anyone with a job doesn't even have a right to complain IMHO. I know too many people laid off right now, who are struggling to keep their house. So to see people complaining about what they make when they have a job is not fair.

My whole point of my original post had nothing to do with how much I make (trust me, I am not proud of it, but it does pay the bills, so I am grateful for that). It had to do with the fact that you should be happy you have a job.

To those of you that said I was happy making $11.50/hr, the reason I am "happy" is because I can support my family. I don't like the amount and think it is quite low, but I am so happy right now just to have a job it isn't even funny. This is why I am happy with my $11.50/hr. Seriously, with the way the economy is, I would be happy as a peaches pie just to be making anything over minimum wage.

Also, I like being an MT and being able to work from home and be with my family. I think the fact that I am able to be home with my family everyday is well worth my lack in pay.

I do understand that we aren't getting paid what we should be and that the wages are continuing to go down, but that is happening everywhere. Just be happy you have a job. Seriously.

Any more comments . . . I am just trying to make those who are complaining realize how lucky they actually are to have a job and to be making as much as they do.
I cannot find the post you are speaking
of but I just wanted to say "Well said!" It is a shame that people are judged by the color of their skin, how they dress or yes even where they live!

I am proud to say that I also live in a trailer with my husband and 3 children! We also have a nice green lawn and pretty flower beds. We take pride in our home, even though there are wheels on it! Our income last year was $100k+; however, we choose not to live by credit cards and paying a $3000 mortgage but rather saving for the future of our children!

If that makes me a "skank" so beit!
Somebody asked about this before, but I can't find the post.
I haven't had the white menu on the left hand side at all for the past two days here at MTstars.  Any ideas where it went?
I find your post interesting. I am one of those that will not do this. sm
1. I teach at a local college. I teach MT classes, A&P and medical terminology. Guess what, they do not require it. Again they use my experience in lieu of it.
2. I know what position I currently hold. Again, does not need it and experience again is used in lieu of it.
3. I have 20 years of experience. Do I care if I have CMT behind my name? Really I don't. It will not make a difference.
4. I have worked in MT, QA, Management, etc. Again, did not need it do any of the above.

AAMT or AHDI as it is now callded.. they are there to sell a book to make money. They are selling a "title" to make money. However, this title makes little to no difference in the real world.

I have worked for companies that did pay their CMTs 0.5 cpl to 1 cpl line higher than people without it. Learn to negotiate is all I can say.

Your CMT certification does not keep jobs from going overseas and does not qualify you to have the knowledge to be an Editor of that type of work.

Anyone with 2 years' experience can take the test. Big deal. All companies test and I say at least half are bull. I have failed 1 test in 20 years, and then they hired me anyway because they felt there was something wrong (Thank you MTtest.com).

I have 20 years' experience. I am very good at what I do (and yes I will say this). I can also get the rate I want or tell them No Thank You.

I have worked with MTs from no experience to OMG experience. I have seen failure in both areas. The CMT would not have changed anything for either one.

A test is a test is a test. You might have a good day and pass it, or I guess you might not.

I just do not feel the need for someone to tell me that I know what I am doing.

Everyone have a great Wednesday!

Good post! What I find especially ironic
is at least in our state all the phone work, etc. related to welfare and foodstamps has now been outsourced overseas.

Uh, hello... how about giving those jobs to the people who are on welfare or foodstamps cause they can't find jobs?!?!? Since when did the government care about saving money anyway?
Doesn't it say to find the secret post?
I just skimmed it, but I think it says to find the secret post and send an email from that post to enter.
I find most everything in your post to be finger pointing.
You are putting every excuse in the world out there as to why you are not able to do the job you were hired to do.

Sorry to hear about your past but that is NOT why you were FORCED to take a job. You made a CHOICE to take the job.

Yes, it is legal for an employer to ask you to do more than one account. It is NOT abuse but, by the other statements in your post, that you feel everything is someone else's fault.

If the job isn't for you, then go find one that is. The point is that your most profitable work might not be in medical transcription.
If we find out that a service outsources offshore, we do NOT allow them to post.
If you know of a company that does, email the Administrator. My email address is admin@mtstars.com
Did anyone find the post for the scavenger hunt today? Was there one?

I would say something like I would like to ask ome questions prior to sending in a resume and testing as I feel this saves time on both sides. A concern is:     _____  and also the low rates offered and the formula used to figure the payrate. Get it out of the way, don't waste time, some are down to 4 and 5 cents/line for MTs.  Less than 10 is not acceptable and even with that, it sure is not good by the time you figure the hourly rate and just what skill is expected/given and under what terms, I have seen 99.5 accuracy expected. When these bad terms are turned down by the MTs it will not turn around.
Well, unfortunately they do not have a test that you can take prior to the first

drink that tells you if you are or are not an alcohol.  Unfortunately, many people don't realize their disease until it is too late and many people drink "socially" so who is to know what is and what is not going to happen in the future?  As far as AIDS being 100% preventable, I will agree to the point that protected sex is most certainly the responsibility of the individual, but how many people have protecetd sex with their longterm partners not expecting them to be unfaithful or someone who has contracted an illness in ways where they were not resposible?fever

Unfortunately, it is people who judge that keep people who are sick from getting help.  Of course, that does not apply to everyone and mental illness also plays a part in many illnesses, but as a recovering alcoholic I can say that I graduated with an MBA, PTA President for many years, and had no hereditary factors in my life to foresee the possibility of alcoholism to prevent it.  Fortunately for me, I was made aware of my disease and have done everything to prevent a relapse - something I have been successful at for 12 years.  However, I do believe that when people are judge as harshly as you seem to judge, they will more than likely succumb to the label you have given them.

May God bless you!

think.....many years of MTg prior....sm

I started MTg in 1984 and by 1997 I opened up my own little MTSO business.  I believe the level of self confidence plays a huge part.  All I did was make up business cards and I went and solicited myself in medical centers weekly.  I also brought a resume just in case they wanted to see one (that was rare that they wanted to see a resume in my experience).  I only solicited the fields I was very familiar with and got a pediatric and adult neurosurgeon, 2 plastic surgeons, and 2 neurologists right off the bat.  I keep ledgers and used to do microsoft Excel (which I no longer do the latter).

Regardless of what the other poster said, I do print for the private MDs, sometimes on my plain Xerox paper, other times on their letterhead, and I give them free paper and free delivery.  Most MDs want to see something for free.  I give them their headers for free as it's only 2 Keystrokes for me on a 5-line header.  I have kept my doctors for 10 years now and they appear very happy to me.  I give them 24-48 hour TAT (turnaround time) without fail.  When I go on vacation (early autumn) they usually go at the same time.  I never have to farm my work out, I simply juggle my days around.

And to cap it off, I then moonlight for a national for 3-day weekends!!  I love that too because it's always a NEW learning experience for me and I polish up my knowledge of all the other fields that I do not do during the week.

BEST OF LUCK.  If I could do it and be a success, I believe most self-confident people can do the same!!

Prior MT..BS.Ed...job opportunities?
Thinking of returning to the MT field. Little background: I'm currently teaching high school, Bachelor of Science in Ed. I was a MT off and on for 12 years prior to starting my teaching job 2.5 yrs ago, almost all of that experience in a hospital, one year with WebMedx at the end. I also did IC here and there locally. Not sure teaching HS is for me, LOL. But I hate to waste my degree too...are there trainer jobs? Should I look into QA or editing? Am I being completely silly for re-thinking my MT career?? I miss the medical community, have been a part of it for most of my adult life. I enjoy the education aspect, just not sure HS is the right fit. Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks :D
Did you work for MQ prior to...
working for this new company?
I have been at the same company for 6 years, prior to this job

was at the same company for 8 years.  I left company #1 because they lost the account to MQ and the company only had clinic work after that and I do acute care and didn't want to do clinic.  While searching for another job I tested and was offered positions by 6 companies.  I took PT positions with 3 of them.   I had been using a C-phone with a small local and really had no clue about other companies.   One job I kept for 1 year until they got rid of my account because they were such a pain.   I quit one after 4 months.

I know someone who had 7 jobs in 1 year and that was only about 8 months into the year.   She was a CMT and wanted the whole world to know it and treat her special, but the quality of her work was very poor.  I don't know if she voluntarily left all those positions or was let go.   When I was testing I was trying to get a feel for what was out there and thinking that company #2 might offer me better than what company #1 was paying.   While this wasn't that long ago, it was when you could still get a decent line rate and I never heard of offshoring.

Well That's IT! Lifeguarding will be mandatory prior to being an MT! Hahahahah!

Prior wedding inquiry update...sm

Previously I had posted on this board  as my fiance and I were trying to figure out how to handle letting people know that we don't want any wedding gifts (we each have a house and don't need material things as we're giving away tons of stuff with merging the home) but had chosen a charity for anyone who would like to make a donation in our honor.

My maid of honor and a couple of friends decided to host a party for us and on the invitations put on there that in lieu of gifts that we were requesting donations to a children's charity that we chose because of the reputation of spending the money wisely  and being well known for its work.

This has gone over very well with the invitees.  I've had many of them call and e-mail me or my fiance saying that they thought this was a wonderful way for us to help others less fortunate and yet celebrate our upcoming marriage.   The charity  agreed prior to our announcement to not pester these people afterwards with mailings and is simply sending those that send a donation a thank you card, and then they're sending me a weekly list showing who made a donation and their address, but not the dollar amount as I don't care to know what they gave.

So... for future brides that don't want gifts  I suggest doing what we did - it's a win for the charity and lets the family/friends that wanted to do something special do this in a way that we chose (and we aren't stuck with household items we don't want or need!)

well, years prior, they sent pens and clocks..nm

Great post -great job of wording your answer! (sm)
Original poster - I completely agree with this answer, especially the part about finding yourself and using all that you have learned intellectually and connecting that to something that you will also enjoy with your heart!! You have so many wonderful options for your future - much more than many of us.
I worked on INET prior to DQS on the same account which was switched to DQS.
You absolutely w/o question need DSL or cable to work on DQS. The searches and the downloads take FOREVER with dial up on DQS.

I lost money on line count on DQS. Same account different line counts per hour. Lots of people have had the same loss. No one, but no one has increased line count on DQS from INET.
Prior to posting here, this is what I found on Wikipedia and why I assumed it was, if not offensive,

From Wikipedia, searching the term Oriental. See what I have bolded and underlined.

Perceptions and connotations

[edit] American English

Controversy surrounds connotations of the term in American English. (See also American and British English differences.) According to Abdurrahman R. Squires, "politically correct terms have taken the place of the word 'Orientalism'".[2]

While a number of reference works used in the United States describe Oriental as pejorative, antiquated or offensive in some instances, the American Heritage Book of English Usage notes that

It is worth remembering, though, that Oriental is not an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. It is most objectionable in contemporary contexts and when used as a noun, as in the appointment of an Oriental to head the commission. In these cases Asian (or a more specific term such as Vietnamese, Korean, or Asian American, if appropriate) is the only acceptable term. But in certain historical contexts, or when its exotic connotations are integral to the topic, Oriental remains a useful term.[3]

Random House's Guide to Sensitive Language states "Other words (e.g., Oriental, colored) are outdated or inaccurate." This Guide to Sensitive Language suggests the use of "Asian or more specific designation such as Pacific Islander, Chinese American, [or] Korean." [4] Merriam-Webster describes the term as "sometimes offensive,"[5] Encarta states when the term is used as a noun it is considered "a highly offensive term for somebody from East Asia." [6]

I thought they can only audit you or send you a tax bill 2 years prior. It is now 2006 - the 2 year
I may be wrong here - maybe it is 3 years, but I thought the law changed and it was 2 years. Check into it.

Yes, I tried to post same last night about 10 times, and it won't let me post.
I used to breed lab puppies (please no activist flames)! I had a champion female white Canadian lab, and people would be on a list for years if by chance I bred her, which I did twice, and so that I could continue her line.  Anyhow, she's my sweet Skye who passed away 2 months ago? At any rate, we had the same problems with kids in the "hood" who wanted to come over and play once the puppies were old enough to be exercised daily and played with.  At first I thought, how cute, right? Puppies and little kids - what better picture! Well, the majority of kids were adorable, but there were always 1 or 2 sick ones who would smack the pups, smash and hold their heads in the dirt (a real common thing, but I don't know why - psychiatrist anyone).  At any rate, I finally had to ban the whole group due to the 1 or 2 creeps, had to call the police, the whole 9 yards, and that's EXACTLY what the police officer told me - next thing is there will be poison meat or a donut in the yard. He told me to always go out and patrol my yard, especially alone the fence line every day before I let the dogs out, particularly at night. I went out with a flashlight.  It was about a month later, but sure enough - poison meat.  Because there were so many kids involved, we obviously couldn't pin point the exact family, but the police went and read the riot act to them all. It would stop and not happen again for a year or so, but every now and again we would find something. My dogs were NEVER out and barking, so it was nothing like that - it was just over the puppies and the cruel kids.... Not trying to freak you, but that's the way these kids and their families are.  You can really judge someone's character by ill treatment of a PUPPY, of all things. And the parents??  They sound whacked.  Please be careful.
