little or no experience.  It might help you decide.  I don't like to discourage anyone, but it does take a lot more than just "fast typing".  You have to have thick skin as well.  You have to be very, very independent, which probably leads to the cut-throat attitudes some (not all) have in this profession.  Some of us have been stabbed in the back so many times, we need the MEDS to dull the pain.  Please do not take this profession lightly as we do not look at it as simply babysitting/no daycare, extra money.  There are a lot of hardworking MT's here with a lot of knowledge.  We are willing to help one another.  One day if you get into this field, way, way, way down the road, you'll know where people are coming from.  Good luck in your endeavors!
Lots of MTs don't check boards for
info on companies or they are willing to take any job, regardless of all the bad.   A lot of them turn to offshoring.

I don't remember if I asked or not, but I did import my shorthand files into ExText, so I didn't have to start from scratch.

Good luck! I hope you're as happy with Amphion as I am!

Here's my check list of advice/questions...sm

1.  Is your son in kindergarten or 1st grade?

2.  Did he have problems at his prior school situation for pre-k or kindergarten, nursery school, etc?

3.  What is the nature of the problems, i.e. is it that he's misbehaving, not feeling like the other kids like him or is it that he's having a hard time learning the things he's being presented at his age?

Now that you've thought about these basic questions we need to move it up to another level.  If he's misbehaving you need to try to find out why.  Is it because of peer pressure?  Is he misbehaving because he's trying to draw attention away from the fact that he may not understand an assigned task?  Is he just having a hard time adjusting to school emotionally?  Are there possibly some learning disabilities?

If you believe that he is capable of learning without struggling and the problems are more behavioral then often times those are corrected with setting goals that include rewards for good behaviors and restrictions for bad behaviors.   I  have a 5-year-old bipolar child who understands that when she has a good day at school that she gets a sticker on the sticker chart at home and for every week that she goes 5 days without my getting a phone call or note from the teacher about a behavior problem then she gets to go into the grab bag and get a prize.  For each day I receive a note or phone call she loses TV privileges, and if I get 2 negative communications from the teacher in a week then she also loses privileges to go to the art room at home (her favorite place).   For the grab bag it's a dark heavy duffel bag that I put things in that I pick up at the dollar store, and includes everything from gum to neat pencils to puzzles to games.   She isn't allowed to see what is in the bag, just has to reach in and grab something for her reward.

If you see that your child is struggling to learn then you need to write the school a letter requesting that an IEP evaluation be done.  This stands for Individualized Educational Plan.  By federal law they will then have to do some screening tests on your child to check for learning disabilities when you request this and will have to assist with whatever needs he may have.  Also if there are known emotional problems then  he would also qualify for an IEP.

I hope that you're sitting down with your child and teacher and discussing what the problems are. Open communication is the best thing and remember to stay objective.  We always want to think I kids can do no wrong and are angels at school all day.  Also if you don't feel comfortable with the child's teacher then talk to the teacher about that and if you don't feel the issue is being resolved then set up a meeting with the principal.

As far as homeschooling goes, realize that this is a very major step and that you will be required to provide 6 hours of education a day.  If you can do this and work then go for it.  I know a lot of people that home school but most of the ones I know that do this only work part-time or not at all.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions about anything I've said and I'll try to help you in any way that I can.   I've dealt with the educational system for several years as a foster parent of special needs kids so I know pretty well what the rules and laws say in the states.

Never, EVER rely on the grammar check from word. Very bad advice.

Good advice, but make sure to check 1 thing
When I did this a few years ago, my company had a policy that stated if I did not return after my leave, I could be responsible for any benefits received during the leave.  Make sure to check with your human resources on that.  I ended up coming back to work out a 2-week notice, which wasn't bad.
I am sorry. I meant boards not broads. Now those darn boards have disappeared again.

Advice to YOU..1st learn to spell before insulting poster and trying to give advice...sm

Sound advice from a fellow MT if you want advice or support (sm)

I have been an MT for over 10 years.  I also am getting burnt out, tired of my job, day in day.  However, I do love transcription and make excellent money at it, have grossed over $50,000 per year the last 5 years.  I decided to go back to nursing school and am very happy with my choice.  However, over these 10 years of transcription I have had my ups and downs.  My biggest issue with being at home working is lack of socialization, being home day in and day out with just the kids and the animals really gets to a person, sure hubby is home at night and thinks working from home is the easy life, thus the return to school and boy has my overall enjoyment of life changed once I realized I was the problem, not everyone else and I needed to find myself again.

Anyway, my biggest advice to you three-fold:

1.  Get into counseling for yourself, find out who you are and what your needs are, whether or not you think you need to, I sense you are feeling overwhelmed and need someone other than your family to talk to that can be nonjudgmental to your feelings and needs.

2.  If you're only making $100 after you pay preschool you can either keep doing it and be miserable, or quit because you are lucky enough to have a husband who can support the family without your income. (See how fast his mind changes just by losing the income you do have as to whether your job means anything.)  Or look for a different company or office that you like more and are more productive if you really want to do transcription (lots of fish in the sea as far as companies).

3.  Find a local "mom's" group where you can get out and socialize.  MOPS (mother's of preschoolers) is an excellent one that is nationwide, they have a website.  Also Mom2Mom is in a lot of areas.  They provide a once a week time for moms with kids the same age to get together, socialize, (some offer spirtual guidance some don't) and each week a different mom takes a turn watching everyone else's children at the facility that hosts it so the other moms can talk about things they have in common.  Every stay-at-home and work-from-home mom needs to socialize with adults, without their kids, or they will have a nervous breakdown eventually no matter how much they love their kids.

Sorry so long but it does get better but you have to take the first step at making yourself happy.

Check at a local nursery/garden center for varieties that are bred for your area, then check online

had a similar issue with TWC and they had done some upgrades and the modem I had was no longer compatible.  The tech knew what the problem was the minute he saw the modem, only it took me about 3 months and threatening to cancel for them to get out here.
No brainer here. Stop payment on first check before you issue 2nd check.

DID you check with Social Security& does your son receive a check???

Go to SSA.gov and research the payee options.  You may have to use the search engine, but your answer to this particular issue should be there.

I am disabled and while my kids were minors, I had to fill out a form each year on how I, as the payee spent each and every penny of the money they received.  I don't see how his mother can justify how she spent his money for things that you normally would pay.

That said, he is getting Social Security right?  Is your son receiving a dependent check?  Under law, if a parent is disabled and has minor children, each and every one of those children also receive a check until they turn 18 or graduate from high school, which ever comes first.

The check is a percentage of your husbands, so for 800.00, your son should receive at least 350.00.  If you have not been getting this, they would pro-rate it back to when your husbands disability started and that in itself, could solve a lot of your financial problems.  You can also find this out on their website,  HTH

no - don't check out wildblue. check out hughesnet. sm
i was on wildblue. i absolutely HATED it. i paid $400 for install and equipment and bill was $51.51 a month for smallest plan. no bills, had to be direct debit from credit card or bank. wasn't a lot faster than dial up and i frequently went over my download limit so i had to upgrade to the $80/mo plan. speed was no faster on their "fastest plan". they had a 1-yr contract and only 1-yr warranty. well 20 days (kid you not) out of warranty my tria (the eye on the dish) went out and it cost me a total of $275 for replacement and tech call (had to wait a week and a half before tech could come and then he no showed and rescheduled for the next day stating he didn't have the equipment he needed to fix me and the repair order had been in for over a week by that time. no call to say he wasn't coming either, just no showed). they TRIED to sell me the entire package all over again to get me locked into another 1-yr contract and i declined. it was best in their book so your warranty and equipment would be "new". i had to tell them for 5 months to change which credit card to debit from, never could get it right. had to tell them for 3 months when my phone number changed. i could not wait until the day my 1-yr contract was over. have heard really good things about hughesnet. i think it is a tad more a month, but supposedly a lot faster than wildblue and not near as many problems from what i have heard from others. wildblue was down for an entire week at one point throughout the year i was on it. always got lost signals and page cannot be found multiple, multiple times throughout the day. i used wildblue with VPN (with transtech) and could not keep a connection enough to get a decent line count as i was dropping signals too much and it did slow it way down. i finally got clinic work rather than acute care where time and speed wasn't a factor. research message boards for complaints about wildblue and hughesnet before deciding. also hughesnet i think told me a 2-yr warranty rather than only the 1-yr with wildblue.
Check the classified board here and check

If you look at the ads on various job boards they

list equipment.  Some still use C-phone, some use Lanier, some use wav pedals, some require you to rerecord and there are still a few small local ones that still use tapes.  Even though some companies use the internet, some you download and work off-line, others you have to be connected the whole time you are working so high-speed is a must, either cable or DSL.   I you are going to buy a foot pedal I'd get a generic that would work with ExpressScribe or Start/Stop, one that is capable of working with multiple types of voice files.  The ExpressScribe software is free so you just need the pedal.   I haven't read your other posts so don't know if you are trying to go on your own of what, but if you are working for a company I wouldn't buy a foot pedal until you have a job where you need one.  Some companies use a proprietary software and you need a specially configured foot pedal.  You can always download the free ExpressSribe and use the keys to do any testing.

we don't have to be 100% on these boards...

I see improper usage of their, there, they're all the time on the boards but doesn't mean that's what the poster uses in medical reports - sometimes people just forget and type the wrong word on public boards -

Except for the word board, the admin here at this site says we are never to correct the poster's typo.....so let it go, let God, and not to worry.

One should never assume anything in this business - one of the first rules of thumb.

MT boards
You'll have to do a Google search or maybe someone will email you. There are others, but it is against the rules of this website to direct people to them, at least on these boards.
and all the other job boards - there are may outside of two.

There are already boards where you can
do this and they can also post on the various word boards.  I help on the word boards when I can, one even has at least 1 physician who frequently helps, and with a word board you get a whole lot more experience than you would working one-on-one with someone.
Have seen it on other non-MT boards too
Don't know if it is the general mindset of people in tought times; participation at another site I frequent is down significantly because of the negative and attacking posts.

:(
Do you believe everything you read here on these boards? No one knows any better
than I do whether they outsource. They do not.
All boards are up and running.

I would like to post on these boards. Can anyone help?

I am totally confused as to what section of the religion board to post on.  There is nothing for general Christianity or perhaps Quaker pursuasion, etc.

I also have no idea what I am, liberal or conservative or what.  I liked it better when you could have a real discussion.  We exchanged ideas.  I know sometimes they got out of hand, but I don't like any of these boards now.  They are just plain too confusing now.

With all due respect - I go to several web boards, SMT, and SM

the AOL boards. This is the only one where I read so much about dissatisfied MTs. Oh, once in a week or so you'll hear something about VR or EMR, but mostly, the people in other places are still excited about being MTs, proud of what they do, certainly not talking about working fast food.

There's lively discussion about home stuff, hobbies, and kids, but I don't hear many people at all saying they can't make a living at this.

I wonder why that is? Serious question.

lighten up - I have gotten a lot of help on these boards (sm)
We're just having a fun day.  Are we allowed?  I've also noticed that many of the questions that have no answers posted are the ones that have already been asked and answered ad nauseum.  Check archives.  People get tired of repeating the same things over and over.
MTs always negative on these boards? hmm? NM................

No clue really but perhaps on the boards...sm
Equipment or Technical boards here at mtstars might help you better than I cannot.  I only know that one of my monitors has a very small screen and I cannot see a lot of what I'm supposed to see on that screen.
other MT message boards
I was just wondering how many of you go to other MT message boards and if this is your favorite.  I have lots of them posted on my favorites but this is the only one I check every day.  Once in a while I might check the others but I'm usually bored after a few minutes.  How about the rest of you?
How to search boards
Can someone please tell me how to search for comments on companies?  tia.
Posting on boards
I agree that some topics should be posted on their respective boards but it seems as if every other message the thread is locked. Pretty soon, you won't have to worry--no one will be using the boards at all! It's a little confusing to decide, gee, should I put this on this board or that board or maybe they won't let me post it
OR they will get the point and use the appropriate boards. sm
The monitors should have started this a long time ago, they maybe the users of the board would have learned which boards to use from the start. I think this is a great idea even though it must take a lot of their time to do it.
they have to keep boards organized....N/M

State boards
Here in Oregon there is a posting on the state board that shows complaints, etc. against doctors.  So you might try that.
I believe they got rid of the too numerous boards - sm
because it was getting totally ridiculous. There were boards for everything under the sun it seemed. Posts were being moved and locked because they should be on a different board. Many, including myself, thought it was getting to be a bit too much. So luckily they listened and trimmed it back down to something a bit more manageable.
