no hyphen but Client Profile comes first...SM

Posted By: page 207-211 in AAMT (now-AHDI) BOS.. on 2007-08-17

Too lengthy to type here - but if you can get to a BOS (Book of Style) it covers hyphens from pages 207-211 in their entirety!!

someone here has him on their profile
You can see it in their posts, but I can't remember who has it on there.
IC profile
Working as an independent contractor in this field or any other field for that matter, requires a certain set of attributes - namely, a good business head, being analytical, having boundless energy, professionalism, talent in your expertise, and total confidence. You also have to be able to roll with the punches. Mind you, having a good business head and being a good medical Transcriptionist may not necessary always go together. I have all too often observed excellent transcriptionists who were not good business people, but had one goal in mind - to have a business doing transcription, and they would fail and wonder why. Also, the personality profile of a medical transcripitonist may encompass an individual who will go to the ends of the earth to get things "right," who will persist even when working with others who will take advantage of them. Many of us are anal about details, and let's face it, this is tedious, fine-detailed work that requires consuming attention. The medical field is a hostile and negative environment today, and many transcriptionists feel they need to stay in that environment. JMO.
I have a profile

I am 34 and have a profile.  I'm not trashy or sleazy (for whoever said that in an earlier post).  I am female and have found a lot of people from high school and even a few from grade school on there.  I have my profile set to private also, only if you are my friend can you see my profile.  There is lots of crap out there on myspace, just as with any other website but I don't think it's all bad.  I don't use mine for evil lol  I use it to keep in touch.

I agree with the person who said it's okay for your kids to be online as long as you monitor.  I have an 11 y/o daughter and she is allowed online but there are rules and yes I do check up on her.  She doesn't have a myspace and won't be allowed to have one for a few years.  Luckily she's never asked, I don't think she's really discovered it yet.  I think these days constant monitoring of your kids' activities online is a must.

I am 26 and have a profile...
I'm not a phone person, but rather keep in touch with my friends that way. My mother-in-law is in her 50s and has a profile, as does her son who is another state away. I can post blogs and pictures to keep in touch with my friends and family. I love it and I am not trashy or creepy. I also have mine set to private though, so you can only see it if you are on my friend's list. I also use it to keep up with bands that are playing in my town that I like. It has many uses. I agree a lot of kids are on there and a little out of control, but that's not my problem. My kid won't be on there with her clothes off at 14! My little brother also has a site and has a Christian band he is networking on there. My step-mom monitors him though. There have been sexual predators on the internet a long time before myspace came around.

I believe that this can be set in your user profile at your company. This is where they program backspace time, the work pools you are in, etc. If the system is not ancient, it should give you that feed if your profile is set for it.
I believe this something that is specific to your user profile, and ... SM
that is something your supervisor or manager would have to manually change within your profile.
A psychological profile? Eewwww. To me
that would be creepy and kind of invasive. If you don't hear back I have a feeling that is a good thing. It was nice of you to answer those questions, but come on, why get personal with the interview process, either you know transcription or you don't, and an objective test would be enough as far as I am concerned. Sounds yucky. Just IMHO.
I try to keep a low profile about $ and I am "always" going home to work sm
I have friend who has been with me a couple of times when my check has arrived in the mail. WOW he says, is that for ONLY TWO WEEKS? or that for the month? Ummm 2 weeks. OMG! Then, he says, but I know how hard you work. You are always working, more hours than I could possibly stand at a desk in the house. Truth is, I work about 5-6 hours a day, actual butt is in the chair, hands are moving time. I am not one to sit for more than a couple of hours without getting up (never last even that long) and I put in the 5-6 hours of actual typing time over about 10 hrs and I only do about 1600-1700 a day and I never push myself. (Just remember, I am lazy.)

I cultivate the perception that I am quite overworked, terribly underpaid (9.5 cents a line), very tired, always working, can't afford to wear anything other than tatty sweats and might not be able to afford that cup of coffee I am in the store to get. Most people think I work like a slave for about $2 an hour and I am starving and dying. They NEVER ask about being an MT!!!! LOL
Sorry to hijack this thread, but is that Nick Nolte on your profile picture? sm

If so, he's looking kinda rough!  JMO, of course.

did he say hyphen??

ASR often comes through with a suture stated as 0-Vicryl. I don't think this is correct, as I would not type 2-0-Vicryl but just 2-0 Vicryl or 0 Vicryl. Any opinions?

No hyphen in 0 Vicryl. nm

hyphen in mid-phalanx
I was just about to make a post about whether or not to put a hyphen in the word mid-phalanx .. saw this post but am still confused as to whether or not to use a hyphen. Please help.
I would type it without a hyphen.....sm
according to the BOS 3, the trend is to minimize the use of hyphens.
even midday does not need a hyphen, and definitely
not midafternoon.
Word is not always a reliable source for correct grammar and punctuation.
Add the nonbreaking hyphen in your entry. sm
Add the nonbreaking space for your other entries.

In MS Word, the shortcuts are: Ctrl+Shift+Hyphen and Ctrl+Shift+Spacebar

agree... but leave the hyphen in!

either way is correct. They are moving away from the hyphen but it is not incorrect.

BOS under prefixes says to omit the hyphen in most re- words. But..sm

say to use re-cover (to cover again not recover from surgery) and re-create (not recreate, meaning to play). Or use it if the resulting word will be awkward as in re-x-rayed or re-emphasize or re-introduce. This is on page 330 of BOS II.

But even though it's in print, your QA may still disagree with you. :) nm

Positive the hyphen doesn't go in sm for Vicryl
The zero (0) and one (1) can stand alone. You put a # if the dictate it, not if they don't. 1 Vicryl, or 0 Vicryl is correct, as is 2-0 Vicryl and 3-0 Vicryl and 5-0 Vicryl Rapide (not RePEED) as I had an MT transcribe and who SHOULD have looked this up!

Numbers really can stand alone, as above or in 2 days' time. I had an MT type in 1-day and that is wrong, it is just 1 day or even one day. We are so used to sticking stuff together with hyphens and what not, it seems odd at times, but it is true. I'd rather see a number stuck alone that really needs to be a compound modifier, than see them always as compound modifiers when they are not. This is the most common error I am seeing in QA right now.
drop the hyphen, it is a stand alone, no noun follows.nm

That should be fine except for the hyphen (type 2 is not a compound modifier). nm

A hyphen never killed anyone but a left and right error did and I catch plenty of those as the MT.
blah - these aren't rules, they are decisions made by a circle of anal retentive MTs. Dorland's and a grasp of the English land and basic sentence structure all make it happen but a love of medicine is what makes an expert in this field because they follow the doctor's hands, eyes and mind.
FTP Client
I still don't know what an FTP client is that was asked in the original question?
the client always wants a little something...sm
The client always wants a little something for nothing.....so I give them a free line if there is only one word on the line...I give them a 68-72 character line (spaces I do count).  I have never upped them in 9 years, but on my 10th anniversary I am upping them to 13 CPL.  I also give them their 5 line headings for nothing as it's only 2 Keystrokes for me.  They are good to me so I bake for the offices a couple of times a year and give the offices a gift during the winter holidays.
I do for one client

One of my clients requested that I charge this way.  We do 10 words = 1 line, so basically a penny per word.  From what I have figured, I'm doing okay when compared to the character count way of charging on this account.  I think they requested charges calculated this way because of being ripped off by their last MT.  Once I send their files, they can check the word count and keep a running tab to compare with my statement.  They're satisfied and I'm satisfied, so it works well.

Have your client do it. SM
Call the office of your client and have them fax/e-mail to you samples of their prior surgeries.  There's certainly nothing wrong with asking for this.
the client does not have to have it-- sm
The client can unzip using WinZip or whatever program they have installed, but MP Tools is so easy, some clients may want to use it. I have a couple who are interested in purchasing it just for the printing function, which works really well.
I had a client ask me to look
They provided a patient list for the date of service, but if the patient was not on there, then I had to view on-line the past week of patient lists to look for the name.  Yeah right - that took 15 or 20 minutes sometimes uploading and viewing.  So now, they get an inaccurate spelling of the patient name with a comment when I send there report, pt. not on list.  Hello?  Like the low wage isn't bad enough, and then add in that kind of junk.  It is pathetic.
What the client says is law, if that is what they want, then
that is what they expect and they have the right to tell an MTSO who can and cannot work on their accounts.
Even with this, the client is always
BOS is a style guide, which I do not own.  However, I aim to please the client.  So, if the doctor wants to spell something his own way, then so be it.  He went to medical school, not me!  A book of style means absolutely nothing to a client who wants things a certain way.  End of story.
It is just according to what the client
wants. Most do I would think, but some want them in a paragraph form and not captialized. Need to check with your supervisor or client.
Oh my! Do you have your own client? sm
I don't know of any MTSOs who pay 13 cpl. If you found one please share.
