of course...you may not get it but you deserve it (small mess)

You mention annual and cost of living raises, what about incentive raises. Anything not in your job description should constitute some type of compensation.

If no money, at least get this on your resume and added to your personnel file, yes?

go for it because if they say no you know where you stand. knowing where you stand can be important. if you do not ask you will never know and you may start feeling resentful.

just my opinion...

they certainly would not let you go or anything, right? perhaps you could ask for a review with your manager (something in writing) and then go for it ?

small mentality usually means small pocketbook
Still make more than you and I but that is deserved. They've put the effort forward and educated themselves.

Deserve it?

Then every American who is displaced by fire, tornado or whatever disaster ALSO deserves it.  I'm all for HELPING people get back on their feet.and help whomever whenever I can but I feel no obligation to help anyone who by their own choice lives off the government.    People who lived off the govt before the hurricane will just go back to what they've always done (excluding disabled, eldlerly and infirm) and those who have always taken care of themselves will go back to doing what they've always done.

You re correct in all you say about the govt.  If we, as individuals, handled our finances like the govt, they would call us bankrupt and I expect this country to be bankrupt in the not too distance future.

No flames please, it's just my opinion.

you could say what I deserve
That is utterly judgmental, wrong and rude.
Well you deserve a sm

too for experiencing that.  I can understand as I've had a similar type week.  It just keeps "getting better" NOT!!

Since you MIGHT get paid Friday, maybe you should hold your next batch of work and let her know you MIGHT send it Friday, then again you MIGHT not.   I know, but it would be nice, wouldn't it?

I don't think what you are asking is too far off from what you deserve.
The worst they can do is come back with a lower counter offer at which time you can make a decision. Good luck to you!
You go, girl! He does not deserve
the patronage of any sensible person.
they deserve the 2,000 from govt
Do you keep track what is happening to our tax money for Iraq?  Halliburton?  FEMA?  Homeland Security Dept?  How much do we pay each politician and do they work 8 hours or more a day?  Did they check with the tax payer when they went on a months paid vacation?  Our taxes also pay for politicians health plans.  Dont worry you wont feel it, you will continue to pay the same taxes.  These people were displaced, due to a major screw up, either local, state or federal govt..The investigation will tell.  In the meantime, they no longer have jobs, escaped with the clothes on their bodies, they have no money.  The govt is now their employer until they can get new jobs and homes.  Do you tell your employer what you do with each paycheck?  Well, they shouldnt have to either.  They werent asking for hand outs, then the hurricane and levee broke.  It is not their fault, they are victims..It is the govts fault, either local, state or federal.  Buy alcohol?  LOL, I think I would buy them a beer after all they have gone through and still are going through.  Our tax money is wasted every day by the govt, give aways, pay offs, pork, mismanagement.  At least I know my tax money is going to human beings that are in dire need.  God help them all to get over this preventable tragedy.

We certainly deserve more respect than that!

First decide exactly what it is you want and believe you deserve. SM
Have some facts ready to back up your position...time spent, mileage estimates if you are doing any driving as part of it, additional skills you have had to develop (for example, using or building spreadsheets, drafting user requirements, implementation plans, project management software, report design, team leadership skills, etc.). Then you might casually broach the subject while giving a progress report to your boss and if he/she seems at all receptive, suggest scheduling a one-on-one session when you can go into more detail. Don't worry about not having a degree. I was a senior project manager for 8 years with a large insurance company without a degree. The very least you can expect is to be taken off of the production part of your job until the project is complete (assuming you are putting in 8-hour days on the project). Good luck!
deserve it (was cut off). I am happy for you!
I have watched some of you extraordinary people that just fly on dictation. I am a middle of the roader, plodder so to speak.
no doubt we deserve more
Hi other Emily!! :)

I took a look at my own medical records and was apalled at the medical errors and mistakes in the reports... There should be some standard in this industry! I work my ass of and have 98-99% accuracy for the past 10 years and it is disappointing to see what they are willing to accept to save some money. If the average person knew that their medical records were not being done with the quality and care that I make myself give... I think most would be upset. Maybe I'm crazy... but I know this as well, not EVERYONE can be a transcriptionist! This is a skilled trade and I am definitely feeling unappreciated lately, but obviously there is little we can do about it.

About your own company, I am an IC, and I just asked for a raise (i should have just stated it) but either way they aren't taking it. I was underbid by 2 cents a line and they, I'm sure, will go with them even though they "want to keep me". I feel angry that there isn't some standard that we are set forth and that we all have. Then again, it's all gonna go to voice response at some point, and only editors will then be needed. It's time for a career change, it's just a sobering thought and I'm not ready to do it...
Good luck with what you decide
P.S. - Not saying I don't work hard and don't deserve
good money but I just mean that you've got to have some incentive to work as hard as you have to work to get through medical school in order to have people willing to do it.
You're welcome, and you deserve the compliment. (sm)
Effective writing isn't all about long, fancy words, or even about proper spelling & punctuation (as the Grammar Police would like us to believe), it's about GETTING THE POINT ACROSS. And you do that 200%.
And why do we think that we deserve to live better than other people?

This country is plagued with consumerism and lots of people don't seem to know when enough is enough. We have garages for our cars and other stuff when people in other parts of the world don't even have anything close to our garages to live in. No where have I read that only Americans are entitled to all these luxuries that we seem to think we can't live without. (Having food, clothing, shelter and clean drinking water is considered a luxury in many parts of the world, so please don't use that as a bully pulpit.)

I, too, am tired of this argument!

Why I deserve more money and better treatment as an MT...

I do NOT transcribe "medial sonoscopy."

Good Lord.

I think MTs deserve to have QA who know their stuff. QA should be more qualified than an average MT
QA specialists are specialists in the field. Of course there are new things learned every day, but a good QA person KNOWS that melena is different than melanotic...it is a given. There are certain things you have to know and that is one of them.

Many companies *think* they can just hire anyone for QA and call them QA and that is why so many ads you see say they pay 3 cents a line, etc.

QA staff should have megayears of experience in MT as well as at least 3 years of experience doing straight QA with the mentoring factor involved also.

All companies owe this to their MTs and if you are getting less, you are not getting what you deserve from your employer.
I have no problem helping people who deserve it
I welcome anyone from there who has gotten up in the morning and worked like the rest of us and was hit with an unfortunate run of bad luck, but when I see people taking TV's out of stores, shooting at the EMT's who are trying to help people, and crapping all over the Astrodome, no thanks.  I don't want them in my city or even on my planet.
Splurge and stay at the Atlantis. You two deserve this!

She's a mess and always has been.
I never understood the attraction to this dumpster-diving looking woman.
WOW! Now that is a mess! sm

It is odd that she wants to tell you what to do with clothing that she "gives" to you.  That is horrible!  In my opinion you did the right thing about telling her that you don't have anymore room in your clothes.  She does know why you are not accepting the clothes anymore.  If that does not make her change her tune then nothing will.  So, I think it is best, even though you two are missing out on a good thing, to have nipped this thing like you did.  You may be losing out now but if it would have kept on and perhaps all of you been at the same place at the same time with your friend wearing "your gifts" then it could have turned out to be sour.  Now the only thing sour is your "friend" that has an abundance of clothes right now.

BTW - what kind of a friend does that to another friend?  Hopefully, no friend of mine...

You are probably going to be really in a mess
if you ever have to explain to the IRS about fees for your animals. How about my 22 pounds cat- can he be my guard cat? If you can charge for guard, then you should be able to take off monthly fees for security monitoring. Hehe
the mess
Janet's right. SR/VR just totally mangles a lot of reports. What sounds perfectly clear and concise to me will be total nonsense in the SR/VR draft version of a report. You need to remove or add punctuation and also capitalization of words on almost every line, sometimes multiple times per line. You have to fix anything that needs to be put into a numbered format. You need to correct headings - add them or delete them. Entire sentences or paragraphs could be missing that the dictator clearly spoke -- I heard it, why did the speech engine miss it? I'm not talking about mushmouth dictators or ESL's. You could have very good dictators that the draft report is just a mess. It is time consuming and frustrating. There are some reports that would be quicker to just type from scratch, but not for 3-1/2 or 4 cents a line!
N'Awlins Mess
Well, between opening all the jail doors, and locking in all the poor "projects" seciton inhabitants, the mayor's pretty much taken a pass on re-election.  This goes beyond partisanship well into the range of sheer, corrupt, beaurocratic incompetance.   But the national-level response has been pretty pathetic, as well.  "oooh, we didn't know it would be this bad!"  Well, drive in, look around and use the radios the army gave you, General!   Sheesh.
Clutter - mess
I have five accounts that I receive schedule print outs from that I check off the names and it seems that they pile up weekly.  I cannot find the time to put them into their designated files.   I also have mail, other things all over my desk.   I usually take Saturday morning with a cup or two of coffee and straighten it out and SWEAR that I will keep it that way but the once again by Friday I am in almost the same shamables.  I thought it was only me.  I can find everything, do not lose papers or tapes -- usually -- and for a supposedly paperless profession I sure do generate a lot of paper.   But glad that I am not alone.  Now where is that schedule???
I'm an IC & I can tell you I'd get out of the biz before I'd work for such low pay. No Mess

quick fix when you mess up ? sm
Highlight your upper case text, then hold down the shift key, and press the F3 key. Everything should revert to lower case.
Except that what actually STARTED all this mess - sm
with overseas undercutting was ANY hospital or MTSO doing American business with cheap offshore workers. I know that our cars, clothing, and even our (poison-laced) pet food comes from overseas, and that's bad enough, but this is worse. This is American healthcare, and American ID's and information, and there should be laws against ANY of it going offshore. If Indian workers want to do American MT work, the only way they should be able to do is is by actually living here, and having to pay American prices for their food, rent, and yes - health care.

I could go on and on about all the greed in American companies these days, and not just MT. These guys don't seem to get that you can make tons of money (and maybe even MORE money, in the long run) by being honest and ethical, rather than by being greedy and unscrupulous.
If you don't want to mess around with paying
quarterly, have more withheld from your husband's check as you file jointly. With that and your deductions you should be okay.
Thanks for all the responses! - no mess.

I think you sound self absorbed to feel you deserve gifts. Being a mother is selfless. nm

My husband doesn't see any mess that is his...

as long as it's his 5 pairs of shoes by the door, his clothing draped over the chair in the dining room and his misc. "stuff" piled on the dining room table (yes, the dining area is also by the front door) then it's invisible to him.  NOW, if it's mine or the kids' stuff anywhere - the house is a "disaster."  I intentionally leave all his stuff wherever he leaves it so that I can point it out to him whenever he starts to complain about the kids' toys in the living room...

This was a major national. You can mess with just about anything...
as long as you have a space bar.
Ditto what Wally said. Don't mess with it.

Young people can have heart problems.

I've been in a panic lately because my left-sided chest has been hurting off and on.  I've had two abnormal EKGs in the past.  I went to the doctor two weeks ago and he blew me off.  I'm in my early 30s, too.  I have high school friends who have had heart attacks and coronary artery grafting or died.  Oh, the doctor just treated me like a hypochondriac again.  I've got kidney problems, too, but they won't even do a urinalysis.  Evidently, none of my symptoms are serious enough to warrant workup or treatment.  Never mind the fact that diagnosed "reflux" was actually a hiatal hernia and diagnosed "constipation" was actually large kidney stones blocking my ureter.

Long story short.  LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.  FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS.  Get thee to a doctor and be persistent, for you, for hubby, for your kids and for your peace of mind.

I was impressed with this. My computer was a mess. nm

We should get paid more just to listen to this mess
You know, the people cut our pay and put us on things that we have to be mind readers most of the time to muddle through. I am doing VR and regular work but I cannot believe how dictators are changing their dictation time after time- on the same sentence. It is a wonder that anything comes out halfway right. Half of the knowledge about this job comes with knowing (or thinking you know) how to change these fricking sentences they dish out to us. On a day like this retirement looks better and better.
Yeah, sometimes I catch mess-ups...sm
when I go back through the report, and I say I am glad I proofread. LOL.
Have you seen photos of the tangled mess of
What an incredible MESS. To think that valuable, often sensitive personal information travels through that knotted mess made me nervous even BEFORE the attacks in Mumbai. And now the risk those records face there makes me nauseous. It's a huge U.S. security and/or identity-theft breach just waiting to happen.
Agree wholeheartedly, 100% on this one (No Mess)

Finally, a thought that explains the mess down there!
That would make sense, those that worked, had familes, had ties all fled when possible. Those few for whatever reasons did not make it out appened to get "stuck" with the lowerclass and those released from jails, which finally explains why in the world anyone whould shot at cops and enlisted servicemen/women trying to come in and help!

Good grief that has been driving me NUTS! As it IS an unAmerican response, unhuman response to distaster. Hecks, we had a string of house fires, and people who battle it out everyday in our area were bound together....we do living in a working class are where most families have two working parents...but still a shame to think that is the cause of this extreme maddness, but at least a better thought then they all just went mad suddenly!!
You have GOT to be talking about Transcend. What a MESS in that regard!
I threw in the towel after a few months, and regret that I waited that long. What a waste of my precious time! It was such a giant step for me back in time having to shuffle thru reams of paper, and most of which make no sense at all - no rhyme or reason to 50 pages of random rules, each and every silly report that pops into my computer. Uggghhh. It NEVER got better - actually worse when changes came in nearly daily and the whole mess was jumbled around again, with my highlighting and hints obsolete! I heard other parts of Transcend under different supervisors went smoothly, but the different accounts I tried were all the pits!! Forget about transcribing! Had to go thru hurdles to get there!
Gracious, that is one heckuva recipe. Too much for me to mess with

Don't mess with my line counts to get that $.01 savings !!!! n/m

Why is spellcheck acting up on me? Did I mess up the settings?
If you have any ideas why it is now checking headers/footers when it did not do that before, please advise. It is driving me crazy.

actual typing time mess

I know exactly what you mean. We see it in E-mails all the time where I work. Although they aren't enforcing it, they do ask that we work our full shift AND get our lines in. I know Dictaphone Extext tracks your typing time and you can see that when you check your line count. It gets really depressing on the speech editing because actual typing time is a LOT less, so it takes longer to get my time in.

This is another way to get more out of the MTs. I think it's all crap, especially since if you were to go over 40 hours a week you won't get paid!

I would never anybody let mess around with my face. No matter how good
the doctor is, sooner or later you can see the 'plastic.'

And then you look worse than before and have to have a 'followup.'

Never, never......and I really mean 'never', except I am in a terrible accident, disgfiguring my face.
