Does anyone have to use size 10 font? Does it take you longer to make your lines? nm

Is ExText user friendly? Can you make good lines?

Sorry, an "MT" should never make such basic mistakes,

Agreed! I couldn't stand to make my living (sm)
facilitating the state of California's biggest growth industry. Not to mention the doctors' callous attitudes towards their patients and the things you would have to transcribe would make you ill. You do know our country has the greatest percentage of our population in jail of any country in the world?
A basic recommendation for a basic expander use plan SM
If you use your Expander mainly to store text for specific doctors and their specific reports you will 1) Find it extremely difficult and expensive to change jobs (critically so, to the point of eventually feeling you can't or even leaving the field when your employer lets you go) and 2) as someone said, find yourself spending a whole lot of time editing your expansions to the current report.

I strongly recommend instead contacting Linda for her system, then day by day developing your expander vocabulary of INDIVIDUAL words and phrases, untied to any specific report. I can take my abbreviation for "denies any fevers, chills, or sweats" (dyfcos) to any of dozens of companies and use it for dictations of thousands of doctors. No having to change it, because I also have one for "denies fever, chills, or sweats," one for "denies having fevers, chills, or sweats," and so on and so on. As Linda says, with a system the individual abbreviations don't have to be memorized. As you can see, these terms are merely the first letters of the words in the phrase(with Y standing in for "any" instead of A because that's my abbreviation for the word "any" itself).

BTW, regarding that last, editing gets very fast when all you have to type to drop in the word "the" here and there as you cruise through is a T, "his" a G, a "that" a V, et cetera. No special reason for those letters for those words, I was just looking for a one-letter abbreviation I could cut them down to to speed up.

Hope this makes sense. Linda will understand what I mean about the extreme importance of developing an independent dictionary of expansions that will work with any dictator.
17 inch is a good size - they have glare screens

I have had both types of monitors - now both 17 inches but one is a flat screen and one is not.  They do offer glare screens to put over your monitors to cut down on glare which stress the eyes.  I have no problems and been using a computer monitor doing this MT work since 1990, but been transcribing for much longer than that.

Best of luck!

Starting this day and age, I'd not make it..quality is a side issue..speed is what they want..14
nm
It depends on font size, line length, margin size, etc.
There are too many variables.
You must be self-motivated to be a good MT anyway. If you couldn't SM
do well with the self-study program, you probably wouldn't be a very productive MT. I think this is the first bad word I've ever heard about these companies. I'd hire a graduate in a heartbeat because I would know they were competent or they wouldn't have graduated.

If good it would take me 3 hours, anything else 4-6 (not a speed demon)
x
Hi, Marie. Mine aren't that good for speed, either. SM
Lots of ESL and disorganized dictators, and so on, plus work flow is sometimes uneven, requiring one to be flexible enough to come back and finish a shift later. But the work is available and the pay's quite good for the many who are earning the upper levels of the incentive scale. Of course, being hired in at a higher skill level for a higher base pay helps too, and a nice extra is the raise offered anyone who passes the CMT exam.
Make sure you find out what font and font size
.
1 main and 1 backup. You can't get good speed going with too many accounts. Scratch that crap! nm

I can make these lines and my QA is very high
otherwise I would not have a job but and underline that, it also depends on your platform. I in the past always got over 2000 lines straight typing at 2 different hospitals. When outsourced took another job and my count was about 1200-1300 per day. I had NEVER done so little, never. I got back with my old job where I do both VR and straight and I do high but the QA has to be high is expected to be 98 and if below, there is a problem.
Me, too. Can't make money if you can't put lines on the page. nm
n
Their pay is way low and you work like a dog to make minimum lines.
x
Much easier to make lines, but the pay sucks
...
When it comes to gross lines, font does make--sm
a difference, as well as the margins. I was doing gross lines at 0.675 cpl with courier new 12 font with 1 inch margins side to side and 2 inches at the top. I grossed almost 50k this past year, so to me, gross lines are much better. we recently had a management change and are now doing 65 cpl at 0.09 cpl. I figured that would be about 500 a month less and 6000 a year less. that is a big difference, to me, anyway and I am not happy about it, either. This is just to give you some idea of what gross line pay is like. good luck to you.
Geez. I do about 2800 lines a day and make right at $60K.
What in the world is your line rate? Do you get incentive?

So glad I didn't bust my a^^ to make the 10,000 lines!!!!!!!!!

junk for their ungawdly profits.

When all else fails, and you've gotta make those lines,
Let's face it. We ALL do it.
Read between the lines. When a company starts saying work more to make more
and you have to work in assembly-line fashion like an automaton, they are having a cash crunch.  They held out one salary to you to get you to do the job, then they turn around and cut your pay because you make too much.  They don't sound financially stable.  If you've only been on the job 2 months, start looking elsewhere for a more financially stable company.   Send out your resume and see what other companies have to offer and check out references for those companies.  I and a friend in the past have gone part-time with a new company before resigning from the old one in order to make sure the new company is going to be compatible with us. It's hard to do, but it's short-term for only 1 or 2 weeks.
Is the em dat (?) program user friendly - can you make lines - complicated to learn?nm

nm

I have 17 years acute care experience and don't make 1200 lines in 6 hours. sm
I work for a company that is VERY picky about their work, 100% QA everything.  I have been with them over a year, and have to go back and listen to my work a second time while proofing.  I only make 160-170 lines an hour, but the pay is good for that, and I have learned so much in the year that I can go to work anywhere without problems.  For me it is worth the extra time to put in the few extra hours a week to have really top QA.  There is room for all types in this business, the really fast ones, and the slower ones who work differently, you just have to find your place.  Ideally, we should all type 200 lines an hour and have 99%+ QA, but I don't thank too many of us make it.  Good luck to you.
7 cpl gross and counts blank lines, IC status-- make a ton of money because it's easy work...nm

20 cpl is no good if you only get 5 lines
I have gotten slightly higher wages than i have now, but i tell you what my boss bends over backward to evenly distribute work. Granted I have proven myself by being very consistent and a high producer, but she tries to give us those dictators we each like when possible, but if two people have no work, she will split stuff up so it is even. I worked for a company for at 11 cpl only an average of 500 lines a week for a position that was supposed to be full time. Not once did I actually get to work a full shift. I moved on and am making a killing. I beat my personal record high today. :)
Is 757 lines in 5 hrs any good?

Hi all of you fast typing, experienced MTs,

I just typed 757 lines in 5 hours without interruption, which is 150ish lph Is this good?  I know it is not 300 lph.  I wish it was!  Anyway, I have been on this account for 5 months now, I use Instant Text and autocorrect/text.  How can I improve this to where I am typing 300 lph?! Help and thanks a lot!!!!!

10 cpl for gross lines is pretty good for Rad.

increase speed 3, decrease speed 2...sm
increase backspace 9, decrease backspace 8. At least that's what mine does.
Good so far, 1000 lines in 2 hours. Busy!
So sorry to hear there is now work for you MTs at MQ. Maybe time to find another job with another company.
Help! Is this a good deal? .09 gross lines with a font of ...sm

Times New Roman 11 and 1-inch margins.  It will be op notes, but I have a sample report and there are sure A LOT of characters on those full lines.....

Pebbles, thanks, get some rest, that is a good amount of lines.
nm
Sounds good to me! I'll take it. Unless their lines are skewed.

Is this what the package says?
I didn't get mine yet. They will be "monitoring" us?

No they only do that if you buy the package - sm
that offers that. I get the "upgrade" every other year as I posted below and I get no other "updates" throughout the year. If you buy the top package then Stedmans does do that, but I don't. I can usually get the upgrade for $40-$50 if I wait for the sale offer they usually do. That is good enough for me.
I actually do make good $, but....
I don't care for VR. When you are a fast and accurate Transcriptionist you are already topped out when you start editing. My QA averages 99% and the institution I work for is REALLY strict with QAs. We have an average of 10-12 per year and they look at 20+ reports each time. I would rather do straight transcription, but I have good benefits so I suck it up and work. I fear eventually our work will go completely to an outside agency and our dept will be eliminated, saving the institution $$ for not having to pay salaries, insurance, etc. It also depends on what VR system; we use eScription.
