There is a difference (sm)
between imparting wisdom and spreading doom and gloom. A huge, huge difference. Yes, our field is changing. Just as EVERY OTHER FIELD IN THE BUSINESS WORLD.

I hate to tell you but there really have not been "American" jobs in my lifetime. Read any label and you will see "Made in China" or "Hecho en Mexico". That is not to say that ALL work will be farmed out to foreign countries.

This "end of the world" rhetoric gets old and I for one am standing up and saying, stop the panic and the drama. Because, quite honestly, the drama and the panic that is perpetuated on these forums does more damage to morale among MT's than the actual outsourcing does.

Thanks for the encouragement. Can you tell me what the difference is between an Expander and adding entries to the auto-correct? I've already been looking at a few different Expanders and from what I can tell the only difference is the ability to switch between different "dictionaries". Is there anything else?

Newbies are getting hired.
I didn't have to pay big bucks for my education and did just fine. I also got hired with a national right out of school and have never had trouble getting offers and the best pay.

If you haven't been to one of the other schools, you should keep your opinions to yourself! What's right for you may not be for someone else and vice versa. I get so tired of hearing crap like yours.

I could create what you call a top-notch school in no time. It wouldn't take a rocket scientist to do it either.


They test them and if they do well, they get hired like anyone else.

Reason you can't get hired...

This is what happens when you don't go to Andrews or M-TEC. You choose a "cheaper" school, and you get a poor education. Companies who "require" 2 years' experience WILL TEST AND HIRED brand-new grads from Andrews and M-Tec because they know they have a full, complete, and excellent education. They will not even allow people from schools advertised on the back of matchbooks and in TV Guide to take their employment test, because they KNOW they do not have the proper education and training!

If you are *hired by a company* then usually you are an employee...it is when you score your own accounts that you can become an IC....but I'd brush up on typing skills, no offense.....it's truly detail- oriented work and you misspelled pursue and independent...and again, no offense....

Can someone tell me the difference between M-TEC and CareerStep?
I'm trying to decide on which school. I hope to work at home and I do have a job lined up after I get training.

M-TEC looks so complete (their Premier program), but of course more expensive and longer than CareerStep. Does M-Tec offer open enrollment and working at your own pace? Do they have scheduled classes you must sign on for at a certain time? Are their classes a work at your own pace type?

I know that CareerStep has open enrollment and allows you to work at your own pace. It also doesn't have classes at specific times which is something I need since I have 7 children and I homeschool 5 of them. I just cannot stop everything in the middle of the day to do a class. Also, CareerStep is more affordable. I'd be able to afford to get another computer (my kids use this one for school much of the time and it would be too difficult to use it for schooling) and still pay for the program and the extras.

Anyway, I'd like your experienced input if possible. Thanks for your time.


It isn't going to make much difference either way because
you're not producing a lot of minutes, a lot of lines, or a lot of pages. 
The difference in education might

Have you compared how many hours of transcription training you had in college/school with Andrews and M-TEC?  Were your instructors CMTs with many years of experience?  Did your curriculum include anatomy, diseases, pharmacology?  I assume it included medical terminology.  Maybe if people were to compare the curriculums (or if you prefer, curricula) they would understand why M-Tec and Andrews have such a good reputation.  When you graduate from those top two schools, you are very well prepared to work, and that is what many companies have come to realize.


Right now is a difficult time to find employment because many companies are running low on work due to the holidays.  Have you inquired about internships locally?  Doesn't your college/school offer any help with finding a job?


Was your goal always to be an MT? If so, why obtain an associate degree?  If you have come to realize that you want to be an MT, then maybe you would be better off investing into Andrews or M-TEC.


Have you passed any tests/all tests?  Many companies have a direct link on their websites for the testing.  I would assume if you aced a test they would be willing to talk to you.  How many resumes have you sent out?  I believe it will be harder for you to get your foot in the door somewhere, but if you really want this, you will find a way.

AAMT BOS 2 and 3 difference?
I have the AAMT BOS second edition.  Of course, now there is a third.  I am starting to notice a few things different (such as numbers).  I want to know if I really need to buy the newest book or if there is a place I can download anything that might differ between the second edition and the third?  Thank you for any suggestions.
I went to a community college and was hired
by a national one month before I graduated. You do not have to go to one of the "Big 3" to find a job in this business. You have to keep applying, keep sending in resumes, and TEST, TEST, TEST. That's what I did. It's not easy, but it can be done if you stick with it.

It's the incentives that make the difference
After transcribing for 7 years, I was making 13.60 per hour. I believe the starting wage back then (12 years ago) was around $8-9 per hour. Luckily now, most hospitals also offer incentives, differentials and bonuses. That's what really made a difference for me. The more lines we typed, the more $$ we made. With the incentives, I averaged $4 more per hour. $10 an hour starting doesn't sound too bad, considering you're in a small midwest town. I also live in a small town now and wages are never competitive unfortunately.

you don't even have to dictate for that.

My doctor (my PCP, not a doctor I work for) mentioned that I probably won't have MT work for much longer and told me that even his office is going to EMR soon. I don't think records will be as detailed, but don't see much work for the MT with point & click & templates.

You didn't mention the name of the company. It could be they have a new account and it's not off the ground yet. It was a month after I was hired before I actually started working. That was two years ago and I'm seldom out of work.  I'm still on that same account. 


If you are hired as an IC, is it harder to stay with that company?
Do you have to worry about renewing your contract every so often?
NOW versus KNOW - Learn the difference as you will need to KNOW it at some point.
Trust me, you don't scare us.  As experienced professionals, we know what happens to MTs with delusions of grandeur; they are in for a very rude awakening, to say the very least.

I've hired from that school before and have found CAIs SM
graduates to be severely undertrained with lack of basic skills. I've hired several of their graduates and none of them worked out. That's how I know it's not a quality school.
M-TEC or Andrews have track records of their grads being hired.
If you want to learn about the industry, get a solid education, and see employers knocking themselves out to hire you, go with one of them. I attended M-Tec and literally had dozens of offers to test and several job offers before I even graduated. Some people get tired of hearing those names coming up time and time again, but the facts speak for themselves! Check out their web sites. Good luck! :-)

Much better to go to Andrews School or M-TEC, the top two schools in the country. Almost guaranteed to be able to get a job afterwards, and most companies will waive the 2-years' experience requirement if you are an Andrews or M-Tec grad.

You're new and you're already frustrated?
You better find a new profession because doctors have always been lousy dictators and they always will be. It comes with the job. Nobody will ever say anything to the doctors about lousy dictating. They bring in the money to the hospitals. They can do anything they want. Get used to it.

I'm so with you!  After my recent work shifts I am more convinced than ever of the need to find something less stressful than nursing. I love the medical field but I really can't continue to endure the nursing world. It's going to hell-in-a-handbasket and I'm sure you know what I mean. I hurt my back last nite responding to a seizure! The guy was in a pool of blood and cyanotic. Found out later he's Hep C+. Great...and now my back is tweaked. Keep me posted on your plans!

Oh, just relax...Of course I want MT's with experience - and as long as there continues to be MT's with experience that want work at a certain rate, they will be hired in front of a newbie. In the work place it is all about what the market will bear. Nursing shortage? Nurse pay goes up. Until Filipino nurses flood the market. Then nurse pay goes down (just as an example). All I'm saying is as long as there are experienced MT's who are willing to work for 6-7 cpl (and I get plenty of them asking for work all the time at that rate), then a newbie can't be worth the same. It's all about what the market will bear. Therefore, you have to give the employer something to make hiring you more attractive than the next person....which is what? I'm always surprised that a newbie doesn't take an internship or something- whatever it takes- to get that experience. Without the experience, your chances of being hired go waaaaaay down.


My own suspicion is that it's the MT schools who keep telling newbies to go out and try to get jobs at 6 cpl - sometimes I even get resumes asking for 8 or 10! If the MT schools were honest about how difficult it was to break into the field - would people sign up and pay the money? No. But they take the money, train 'em and don't tell them that training isn't enough. Then the boards are full of postings from newbies complaining about how hard it is to break into the field. Well, for crying out loud - I would rather work for free for six months and then be marketable than to get 0 work at 6 cpl for years and years, holding out for that one chance in a thousand that someone would be willing to take me on

I have trained a few MTs in the past myself, and made friends with all of them and still keep in touch. Which is why it makes me really angry to see scam artists try and take advantages of "newbies."

And I recognize that.  However, when my employer reviewed my first few batches of reports, he was quite impressed and surprised at the quality given that I was just getting started. 


So, I ask again- what is it that makes AHP an inferior education to other schools like Andrews and M-Tec?  Do they not provide enough anatomy/medical terminology instruction? Are they deficient in practice report experience? 


The only thing I felt under-prepared for was how quickly the doctor's dictate in real life versus what I was used to in practicing.  Other than that, doing real transcribing was actually easier than the practice tapes I was doing because AHP uses a good deal of difficult foreign accents on their practice tapes.  The account that I work on now has no foreign doctors (which is probably unusual), but some of them are ridiculously fast and incoherent. 


I'm really not trying to stir up anything here or argue that anyone is wrong.  I truly am just curious to know why AHP is not a good school.  I have many people ask me about what I do and where I got my training, and when I tell them that I've read online that the quality of an AHP education is questionable, I have no reason to give.  Thanks!


You're not alone...
I graduated from Penn Foster with a 95% and have run into the same situation. I did find out I passed the test given by one national company, and now I'm on a waiting list for additional, unpaid training.
