Why are companies telling people they are hired but they need to wait in line for available mentors.

Quit telling people they HAVE TO GRADUATE FROM ANDREWS (sm)

to get a freaking job in this field.  I didn't go to any overpriced overrated schools, I have my own accounts and I make well over $40K a year.  I have plenty of work (too much in fact) and I am so sick and tired of you people saying the only schools that are qualified are Andrews or M-Tech.


If you want to work for a slave-wage national, sure, then spend your money and get the "good credentials" and see how long it takes you to get your $ back.


However, if you want to succeed, it's possible without being suckered in if you are willing to pound the pavement, sell yourself and do a good job.  It is possible.  I, for one, am proof of that and frankly I'm sick and tired of all the negativity towards people who didn't go to the coddled 2 schools.


Most smaller MTSOs don't give a flip about where you got your education.  We care that you can do the job.  Period.

This person has been offered 6 cents a line but I know the company and getting a raise will be like pulling teeth even if you do excellent work. This graduate will be doing acute care and feel like 6 cents is okay for clinic but 7 cents is more in line for acute care. This student graduated with honors from MT course.
It varies greatly. Some companies pay per line. I've seen as low as
2.5 cpl and as high as 7 cpl.   Some companies pay by the hour, most in the $10 to $15 range.    You'll find exceptions in each case, but this is a ballpark amount. 
Gross line means anything on a line is a line, even if just one word
it is counted as a line.  Not sure what exactly you are asking, but if you are comparing gross line to the usual 65 characters plus spaces gross line is better.  If you make 7.5 cpl per gross line that equals approximately 9.5 cpl based on 65 characters.

The problem is with what the schools are telling you - sm
I have had some problems with the way the schools have been telling new transcriptionists "when you are done with this course, you are going to get a job making $35,000/year." or "You will be hired right after you complete this course." Or "You can work at home right away - no need to work at a hospital."

These are horrible statements to make to students. I cannot tell you the countless COUNTLESS times I have heard hospitals say that they would hire new students, but they have to work onsite until fully trained (which is usually 6 months to a year), and the new graduates tell the hospital "oh no, I was told I could make $35,000 at home and wouldn't need to work in a hospital. I can work at home."

This job is harder than you think. Try being at home with a computer and a dictation system that you may not be familiar with, doctors in another state dictating 100 miles an hour and you have no one to ask. So you put your report in pending for QA to review. After a month of this, QA gets sick of reviewing the new transcriptionist's work and often starts to take $$ away from them. Is this fair? No, but that is the way it is usually done.

Or think about this - you're a newly graduated Transcriptionist and you get a job with someone like Medquist or OSi or any one of them. You sit at your home computer for 8-9 hours, barely get up from it, only to find out that you made $58.00 at the end of your day because the doctors dictated words you have never heard before and never learned in school, or the doctor dictated 100 miles an hour because this is something he says all the time.

Going onsite will help you tremendously. There are people around to help you and guide you. In the long run, you will be much better off after six months to a year of onsite work.

If someone thinks one of the "Big 2 or 3" schools did a good job for them, there's not a reason in the world why they shouldn't say so. This idea that only those schools' supporters should be silenced is inappropriate. At the same time, other schools' graduates should do the same.

come here and say the same thing.  Their program stinks.  Any company that advertises on matchbooks and TV you really have to wonder how good they are.   You never hear of M-Tec or Andrews advertising.

I have applied to two hospitals that are looking for a radiology transcriptionist.  They are both paid by the hour and offer daycare which means that my son will only have to do daycare for 3 hours a day with my husbands help.  I am just sad though that I won't be able to spend as much time with my son.  I hope that someday I will be able to take home the work.  They are interviewing in two weeks so wish me luck!  Thank you so much for finally telling the truth to what this field of work is really like!!!

I found my 2 mentors on this board. Just wait and see, some kindhearted mentor will come along. In the meantime, keep on practicing and try testing/applying as you wait. Who knows you might not need one if you get a job.
If you think the mentors are bad
try the idiots they've got assigning the work to you once you've suffered through the "training" and have to meet that 1,000 line a day quota. Practically unbearable!

What is a mentor and how do I find one? What exactly do they do and will they help me find a permanent position? I am struggling trying to find a job.

Hi. In the past I mentored several new medical transcriptionsists. I loved it. They basically came off the street for the job, a couple had "technical college" training. They were poorly prepared for live dictation. One eventually went on to have her own business and I worked for her when she had overflow!

A mentor can do a lot to help someone along, but also the get-up-and-go must be present in the student.

Mentoring is awfully important. It is rare to work within a large facility and not have someone who can lend an ear from time to time.

Currently I have a friend who from time to time calls and asks me to listen to difficult dictations.

Points of a good mentor: Honestly encourages. Shares tools unselfishly. If I had extra references or older books that could be let go, well that was just another way of getting that person into the success bracket.

Honesty: If, over a period of time, a person is not cutting it as a Transcriptionist they most certainly need to know that. javascript:editor_insertHTML('text','');
Heartland mentors are the worst around...
very rude and unorganized. I highly do not recommend them.
I would wait...
and see what the company that hires you provides.  My company provided all the equipment I needed (computer, foot pedal, speakers, earphones, router, and even surge protectors).  I just used my home computer to test and needed no special equipment for that.  Good luck!

You will NEVER see an increase in your cpl - even years down the road - and they will NEVER offer the incentives other companies do.

until the day that I am making $100 a day. Of course at my rate I would have to type almost 1700 lines per day!

I think I am on that plateau right now...I can hit about 600, maybe 700 lines. Then I get a day like today when I have the really bad doc like ten times and my lines just go out the window.

Oh well, I guess it is all part of it!

I need some information please. Can someone fill me in on Editing, Voice Recognition (I know what it is but don't know how about it in terms of a transcriptionist's duties), and also, can you find someone to mentor you to become a Transcriptionist and how would you find such a person?

No, the problems in this industry are NOT the fault of MTs who lack basics of grammar. The fault lies with the MTSOs who hire and employ people who are lacking the proper skills. In every industry, companies have to hire qualified employees in order to deliver a quality product. If a company chooses to hire an underqualified employee and allow them to work and produce a substandard product, it is strictly the fault of the company. Please put the blame where it belongs!

The Privacy Act regulates the use of SSNs by government agencies. If a business or other enterprise asks you for your SSN, you can refuse to give it. However, that may mean doing without the purchase or service for which your number was requested. For example, utility companies and other services ask for a Social Security number, but do not need it; they can do a credit check or identify the person in their records by alternative means.


Giving your number is voluntary, even when you are asked for the number directly. If requested, you should ask why your number is needed, how your number will be used, what law requires you to give your number and what the consequences are if you refuse. Why not doing something proactive to remedy your situation NOW...such as go inhouse and work for your experience! lol

THEN, you will truly have the experience you need to be hired to work from home.

I don't blame companies for not hiring newbies. You really do not have an insight yet as to what all this job will entail. Believe me, you NEED the inhouse one-on-one experience for 2-3 years FIRST before you try working from home.

Wait until you start dealing with their Indian techs, in India!, and run out of work. nm

Newbies are getting hired.
I didn't have to pay big bucks for my education and did just fine. I also got hired with a national right out of school and have never had trouble getting offers and the best pay.

If you haven't been to one of the other schools, you should keep your opinions to yourself! What's right for you may not be for someone else and vice versa. I get so tired of hearing crap like yours.

I could create what you call a top-notch school in no time. It wouldn't take a rocket scientist to do it either.


They test them and if they do well, they get hired like anyone else.

Reason you can't get hired...

This is what happens when you don't go to Andrews or M-TEC. You choose a "cheaper" school, and you get a poor education. Companies who "require" 2 years' experience WILL TEST AND HIRED brand-new grads from Andrews and M-Tec because they know they have a full, complete, and excellent education. They will not even allow people from schools advertised on the back of matchbooks and in TV Guide to take their employment test, because they KNOW they do not have the proper education and training!

If you are *hired by a company* then usually you are an employee...it is when you score your own accounts that you can become an IC....but I'd brush up on typing skills, no offense.....it's truly detail- oriented work and you misspelled pursue and independent...and again, no offense....

I went to a community college and was hired
by a national one month before I graduated. You do not have to go to one of the "Big 3" to find a job in this business. You have to keep applying, keep sending in resumes, and TEST, TEST, TEST. That's what I did. It's not easy, but it can be done if you stick with it.

You didn't mention the name of the company. It could be they have a new account and it's not off the ground yet. It was a month after I was hired before I actually started working. That was two years ago and I'm seldom out of work.  I'm still on that same account. 


If you are hired as an IC, is it harder to stay with that company?
Do you have to worry about renewing your contract every so often?

I've hired from that school before and have found CAIs SM
graduates to be severely undertrained with lack of basic skills. I've hired several of their graduates and none of them worked out. That's how I know it's not a quality school.
M-TEC or Andrews have track records of their grads being hired.
If you want to learn about the industry, get a solid education, and see employers knocking themselves out to hire you, go with one of them. I attended M-Tec and literally had dozens of offers to test and several job offers before I even graduated. Some people get tired of hearing those names coming up time and time again, but the facts speak for themselves! Check out their web sites. Good luck! :-)

Much better to go to Andrews School or M-TEC, the top two schools in the country. Almost guaranteed to be able to get a job afterwards, and most companies will waive the 2-years' experience requirement if you are an Andrews or M-Tec grad.

This is exactly what we tell people if only
they will ask their questions before plunking their money down for a course. And they get so mad at us. We would have told you that PCDI won't be enough education. We would have said you are going to be too busy and distracted to commit the necessary time to the job with 2 little kids. We would have said that trying to work from home from the start was going to be awful for your career (unless you went to one of two schools).

On top of that, there are other newbies currently looking for opportunities who are flabbergasted that you threw 2 away. Now 2 people who tried to help you are going to decide they won't want to waste their time on newbies again. That's not going to help the situation for others. Sorry if we aren't terribly sympathetic, but it is all so predictable.

Unfortunately go to a really good college but because they are not connected to any national companies have to work harder to find an at home job. The reason I went to an actual college though is because I have now completed 1/3 of the classes needed towards other medical professions, such as nursing, in case I choose to go back. I'm not sure if the classes with Career Step, MTech, etc would transfer over like that.

I think MTs are still in high demand, it's just getting that first break to get into it. I'm enjoying my first job, but I would have liked to work alongside an experienced MT to see how they do it. I encourage you to contact your local hospital and see if you can meet their MTs and just get some feedback from them and maybe sit in and watch for awhile, it's amazing how some of them get so much done in so little time!

People, do yourself a favor...

Get a good education if you want to be an MT.  Though there are always exceptions, you need a very solid foundation on which to build your career.  I believe you get what you pay for with the MT schools.  Be aware that just "attending" the school does not promise success.  You need to actually DO all the course work, study, and battle your way through the SUM tapes to train your ear.  It is the ONLY way to train for this career.  There are no quick fixes for this.  You then need to be highly motivated and willing to put in lots of hard work once you graduate in order to continue learning and growing.  You also should have a very solid grasp of English as a written language and have excellent reading skills before you even embark on this as a career choice. 


This career is definitely not for everyone, so everyone should not assume that since they can type, like computers, or want to help people that they qualify and will excel at it.  Honestly assess yourself before you begin and save yourself lots of grief by choosing your career pathy wisely.  Just some friendly advice. 


I have heard of it - from all the people who took that course and can't get a job. NM
