Template versus document
The poster above is right, but there are definite advantages to using a template.  The biggest one is that you don't run the risk of saving over your basic document when you've made changes/additions to it in creating a new document.  You have to remember to change the name of the file when you save it or it overwrites your prior document.  With a template, this isn't an issue.  If you want to save out a basic document as a template, just remember when you save it to change the file type ("save as type")  with the drop-down menu to "Document template (*.dot)."  You'll be able to pull it back up when you create a new file by chosing the "on my computer" option under "Templates" in the task pane.  Hope this helps!
there is no universal template..sm
You will find that each physician, physician practice, hospital specialty, etc. will have their own format style with many of the basic headings of an H&P, Consultation, Operative Report, Discharge Summary, etc. Some docs use headings, others do not. The formatting comes with account specifics. The fund of knowledge involved with knowing medications, doses, medical terms, surgical equipment is much more important than worrying about templates initially. Doctors make many mistakes with medication doses, misspell or mispronounce important medical terms and drugs. It is our job to know when they make mistakes and produce an acurrate report. AAMT guidelines are found in the AAMT book of style. About half of my doctor clients have followed these rules and the others prefer their own particular style, abbreviations, etc. It is always a learning process each and every day. I continue to learn daily after doing this for 20+ years. Good luck.
A template is like a "master form" you use over & over
and fill in the blanks. You don't change the template each time, it stays the same, you are essentially making a copy of the template and changing the copy. The copy is just a document, not a template.
oops, reread post and saw you already work for them. Document
every thing and file a claim against them with the BBB and the attorney general's office.   If they owe you money that you can document also contact the labor board in their state.
Can I ask how document formation will input your decision? Seems like a sideways way

Same problem, will background color affect document?
I wear glasses and have floaters too (quite annoying sometimes!). I think I might like to try this idea. I asked my my supervisor about it and she said it would be fine as long as I changed the background color back to white when I was done and before uploading. Would the background color actually be uploaded when I send a document up? Thanks.
There is a difference (sm)
between imparting wisdom and spreading doom and gloom. A huge, huge difference. Yes, our field is changing. Just as EVERY OTHER FIELD IN THE BUSINESS WORLD.

I hate to tell you but there really have not been "American" jobs in my lifetime. Read any label and you will see "Made in China" or "Hecho en Mexico". That is not to say that ALL work will be farmed out to foreign countries.

This "end of the world" rhetoric gets old and I for one am standing up and saying, stop the panic and the drama. Because, quite honestly, the drama and the panic that is perpetuated on these forums does more damage to morale among MT's than the actual outsourcing does.
What is the difference.....
between acute care and clinic notes? The reason I am asking is because I applied at a local hospital and they had in the position section an opening for acute care.

What's the difference
Thanks for the encouragement. Can you tell me what the difference is between an Expander and adding entries to the auto-correct? I've already been looking at a few different Expanders and from what I can tell the only difference is the ability to switch between different "dictionaries". Is there anything else?
What is the difference between

Hi,

What is the difference between a diploma and a ceritificate?  Appreciate your help.

Thanks,

Barb

Please make sure to ask word questions on the Word Help board. There are
people who specifically answer questions there.

Can someone tell me the difference between M-TEC and CareerStep?
I'm trying to decide on which school. I hope to work at home and I do have a job lined up after I get training.

M-TEC looks so complete (their Premier program), but of course more expensive and longer than CareerStep. Does M-Tec offer open enrollment and working at your own pace? Do they have scheduled classes you must sign on for at a certain time? Are their classes a work at your own pace type?

I know that CareerStep has open enrollment and allows you to work at your own pace. It also doesn't have classes at specific times which is something I need since I have 7 children and I homeschool 5 of them. I just cannot stop everything in the middle of the day to do a class. Also, CareerStep is more affordable. I'd be able to afford to get another computer (my kids use this one for school much of the time and it would be too difficult to use it for schooling) and still pay for the program and the extras.

Anyway, I'd like your experienced input if possible. Thanks for your time.

It isn't going to make much difference either way because
you're not producing a lot of minutes, a lot of lines, or a lot of pages.
The difference in education might

Have you compared how many hours of transcription training you had in college/school with Andrews and M-TEC?  Were your instructors CMTs with many years of experience?  Did your curriculum include anatomy, diseases, pharmacology?  I assume it included medical terminology.  Maybe if people were to compare the curriculums (or if you prefer, curricula) they would understand why M-Tec and Andrews have such a good reputation.  When you graduate from those top two schools, you are very well prepared to work, and that is what many companies have come to realize.

Right now is a difficult time to find employment because many companies are running low on work due to the holidays.  Have you inquired about internships locally?  Doesn't your college/school offer any help with finding a job?

Was your goal always to be an MT? If so, why obtain an associate degree?  If you have come to realize that you want to be an MT, then maybe you would be better off investing into Andrews or M-TEC.

Have you passed any tests/all tests?  Many companies have a direct link on their websites for the testing.  I would assume if you aced a test they would be willing to talk to you.  How many resumes have you sent out?  I believe it will be harder for you to get your foot in the door somewhere, but if you really want this, you will find a way.

Good luck!

AAMT BOS 2 and 3 difference?
I have the AAMT BOS second edition.  Of course, now there is a third.  I am starting to notice a few things different (such as numbers).  I want to know if I really need to buy the newest book or if there is a place I can download anything that might differ between the second edition and the third?  Thank you for any suggestions.
It's the incentives that make the difference
After transcribing for 7 years, I was making 13.60 per hour. I believe the starting wage back then (12 years ago) was around $8-9 per hour. Luckily now, most hospitals also offer incentives, differentials and bonuses. That's what really made a difference for me. The more lines we typed, the more $$ we made. With the incentives, I averaged $4 more per hour. $10 an hour starting doesn't sound too bad, considering you're in a small midwest town. I also live in a small town now and wages are never competitive unfortunately.
No, there's a difference between VR and "point and click"
you don't even have to dictate for that.

My doctor (my PCP, not a doctor I work for) mentioned that I probably won't have MT work for much longer and told me that even his office is going to EMR soon. I don't think records will be as detailed, but don't see much work for the MT with point & click & templates.
A lie is a lie, there is no difference berween lies...sm
what makes you so sure that you would get hired to work in a grocery store? Because you are an MT ?! Even sales people are asked for 'experience.'

Maybe they would hire you to sweep the floors.

NOW versus KNOW - Learn the difference as you will need to KNOW it at some point.
Trust me, you don't scare us.  As experienced professionals, we know what happens to MTs with delusions of grandeur; they are in for a very rude awakening, to say the very least.
what is the difference between clinic and acute care reports?

If you currently type in word, then do a word count
then I really can be of no help.  Usually when trying to get an idea of a line count with spaces and without spaces, you can use this method.  Some people have actual line counting software.  I, however, do not, so I am not much help in that regard.  Hope this helps at least a little.
Time zone difference & work load are what I ask about first as I'm on the east coast. Get up too

What program is not teaching the difference between acute care and clinic work?
I have seen quite a few questions about this lately and was just wondering.
Microsoft Word/Microsoft Word 2003 are the same
MS Word 2007 is an upgrade.  Are you sure that you don't have it installed on your PC?  I don't know if that helps...good luck, and please don't pull your hair out, it comes out with age (lol)
Word

When I have to copy and paste admission notes, for example, and then have to reformat the whole page, all the BOLD  HEADINGS become BOLD HEADINGS.  Then I have to go back and re-bold them all.  Is there a fast way to jump between headings, besides just scrolling?

Just go to the Word help
section of this website.  It's wonderful!!  I've been in the business five years and still use it quite, quite often.
word help
How do I use word help? Do I have to pay any money? Do I have to  be signed up with anything? How long does it take for me to get an answer. Thanks everyone.
Need help with a word.
the word is in regard to a type of incison for laparoscopic hernia surgery.  No mesh was necessary.   Sounds like lachsimen incision was made and there was no tension.
One word...E-bay.
You can find most of the books you would need on E-bay. If not, Amazon.com has a used book section that will save you some money. Also, you can buy directly from Stedman's and sometimes find discounts of their word books.
Pay by the word
I work for a company that pays me .02 cents per word. It is for a research company and it brings me in a nice sized paycheck. It's definitely a fair price I feel. Hope this helps.
I am sure she will take your word for that.

word help

I need some help with this transcription.  It reads  Patient was on a cruise recently and she traveled in an airplane about 10 days ago and ear pressure persists and the patient denies any hearing loss.  No ________, fever, chills, nausea, vomiting.

Can anyone help???

Word help

Hi,

Has anyone heard of Officebestdeals.com?  They are advertising Microsoft word 2003 for 11.95. So cheap!!  Kind of hesitant.  Any information on that would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Barb

Look up the word slander, Lin. SM
One would think someone so focused on quality would know the proper term, or at least know how to consult a dictionary.

stuck on a word
Hello.  Is there a site that I can ask other MTs a question if I am stuck on a word or medication?  Thanks for all your help.
The operative word being SOME...but not very many
I did not come across one company in my extensive search for employment that began before I graduated from Community College that stated they would not let me test because I didn't go to one of the "top 3".  In fact, most companies have links to their testing on their websites.  Those that don't will send you an email with the proper links for testing purposes.  To keep stating that the "top 3" schools are the be all and end all to successfully obtaining employment in this field is just plain wrong.  I was hired before I even finished school.  It depends on the determination of the person.  Two different people can come out of the same MT program and one can be an excellent MT while the other can be absolutely horrible.  Being a graduate of the "top 3" has nothing to do with it.

Its probably your system, not Word
There is a time delay because your puter probably isn't keeping up with you.  Clean out your computer and run a disk defrag.  That should help.
The word - newbie. sm

Does that word sit wrong with other people?  I'm not new to the MT business but when I see that word it just makes me cringeIt is so commonly used in this industry and, to me, comes across as demeaning when we all are fighting so hard to gain some respect in this business.

Just my gripe!

Have a great day.

Yes, same with me, a word is/was considered - sm
5 characters, so 13 x 5 = 65; I would of course confirm this with the prospective employer though before agreeing to anything. If it 65 then that is the norm and acceptable; unless they are offering dirt for pay.
