Basij Militia Allegedly Use Axes, Daggers to Attack Iranian Protesters

Friday, June 19, 2009

CAIRO  —  They're the most feared men on the streets of Iran.

The pro-government Basij militia has held back its full fury during this week's street demonstrations. But witnesses say the force has unleashed its violence in shadowy nighttime raids, attacking suspected opposition sympathizers with axes, daggers, sticks and other crude weapons.

At least once, the militiamen opened fire on a crowd of strone-throwing protesters. State media said seven were killed.

If supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei authorizes a crackdown on protesters calling for a new presidential election, as he warned on Friday, the Basij will almost certainly be out in force.

Formed during the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the Basij became one of Iran's most zealous forces in the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, often leading charges through minefields.

The group, which is controlled by the elite Revolutionary Guard, also was unleashed on dissidents in the 1990s, when teenagers and young men in plainclothes beat protesting students with batons. It's an intimidation tactic opposition supporters say has been revived during this week's outpouring of anti-government protest.

"The Basij began as cannon fodder for the Revolutionary Guard during the war with Iraq. Now, they are there to do the dirty work for them: breaking up parties, hassling women about their hijab (head covering) and much more violent acts," said Meir Javedanfar, an Iranian-born independent analyst living in Israel.

The Basij has leaders based in mosques in every village and city throughout Iran, giving it the widest security network in the country, said Mehdi Khalaji, a senior fellow with The Washington Institute for Near East Policy and a specialist in Iranian politics.

The Iranian government says there are 5 million members in total, but Khalaji told The Associated Press on Friday that active members number around 1 million.

Related Stories

The Revolutionary Guard, a military force that answers to Iran's supreme leader, is considered a strong supporter of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The Basij was used to mobilize support for him in the 2005 election as well as during last week's vote, Khalaji said.

In addition to their salaries, militia members — known as Basijis — get incentives such as easy entrance to universities and licenses and loans for businesses.

The most senior members are issued guns. But the majority use sticks, pepper spray and other crude weapons. "They carry guns, batons and they are driving motorcycles," Khalaji said. "With the motorcycles they go suddenly, they start to drive into the crowd with high speed. They beat people with electric batons."

Some Basijis shave their beards and wear jeans to blend in with opposition supporters, infiltrating a crowd and then attacking, he said.

Amateur videos and photographs from Iran posted online in recent days have shown what appear to be attacks on people and property in cities around Iran carried out by young men wearing ordinary clothing. The images cannot be authenticated because of Iranian government restrictions on the media and telephone and Internet communication in and out of the country.

Khamenei's personal bodyguards, who protect his home and office, control Tehran's Basij force, and his stern warning Friday of a crackdown if protests continue was an unambiguous threat to send the militiamen into the streets, Khalaji said.

Members of the Basij and the Revolutionary Guard were on the streets of Tehran after midday prayers Friday, though not in overwhelming numbers.

So far, the Basij has refrained from widespread attacks on demonstrators. But witnesses say the militiamen took part in a police raid on Tehran University dormitories on Sunday night after students hurled stones, bricks and firebombs at police — one of the few violent episodes during this week's rallies.

Basij members used axes, sticks and daggers to ransack student rooms and smash computers and furniture, wounding many students, according to witnesses.

A day later, students attacked a compound used by the Basij and tried to set it on fire. Gunmen on the roof fired on the crowd and killed seven people, according to state media.

Amateur videos that appear to be from that clash showed men carrying away the wounded on streets spattered with blood as fires burned in the distance and gunfire crackled.

This doesn't look like NOT reporting about Iran to me.

http://www.pnhp.org is by far the best

website out there.  It's a website written by physicians, and it describes what THEY feel is the best solution, a single-payer option.  Unfortunately, they were not given a seat at the table, along with the insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies during the recent hearings.  The single-payer option needs to be on the table, and it isn't.

Just imagine how much money could be saved if the very profitable insurance companies were removed from the equation in a single-payer plan.  Of course, they would still be operating for those people who are happy with their employers' plans -- until these people lose their jobs and discover the grim reality of how much health insurance TRULY costs without contribution from their employers.

Check this out ~ http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/hus.htm
This does not give you the specifics, but very interesting nonetheless.

Since 1973 overall poverty has gone up.

Prenatal care is up, though AA race still lower than Cauc with fetal/neonate deaths higher.

Teen births are down across the board in all races.

Interestingly, cancer deaths have remained the same since 1950 with the most advances seeming to be in treating children with that demographics number of deaths being much lower now.

Healthcare coverage overall is down since 1984 with a less percentage being offered through the workplace.

Seems that South and West US have the higher percentage of noninsured.

I could go on and on. This site has a great deal of statistics which gives a broad overview of our health.

MSNBC

I see it very differently.  Chris Mathews is a big ole softy who loves, loves, loves this country.  Keith O has a twinkle in his eye and assumes the viewers are well informed.  They both seem to love their jobs and relish discussing politics.  They are my absolute favorites.

MSNBC

I really like their commentators.  I do think they are pro Obama,  but not rabidly so.  Rachel has criticized the Obama campaign at times.  Pat Buchanan certainly is not pro democrat.  Joe Scar is not pro Obama.  I get good information from the pro-O commentators and a balanced viewpoint from the Repub commentators. The commentators have been in politics for years, so they point out things I might not have thought about.  I like Keith O's humor.  When he presents information he gives sources and verification for it.  When he is wrong, he corrects himself.  While I was listening to John McC last night, my mind started to wander.  I remembered then why I used to find politics so boring.  Remember Dole? I think Obama brings energy to politics and makes it worth paying attention to.

I don't believe anything MSNBC says.

MSNBC is not as far as it gets because
they are still a part of the major outlet news conglomerates. You want real left reporting, check out Pacifica.
From what CNN and MSNBC
create enough jobs. Our kids and grandkids will be in debt and so much more negativity.
endless war - msnbc
Good article under world news MSNBC online site.  Frightening.  Michael Scheuer, ex CIA analyst states "rather than move forward towards solutions, the US took a big step backward by invading Iraq".  He states the US has a willingful blindness to what needs to be done:  Withdraw our troops from the Middle East, end unqualified support for Israel, sever close ties to Arab oil state tyrannies.  Bruce Hoffman, veteran RAND Corp specialist fears an endless war and dismisses talk of Al Qaida's back having been broken by the capture of some leaders.  He and a half dozen other terrorist experts say the worlds richer powers must address the underlying causes - lessen the appeal of radicalism by improving economies, political rights and education.  Bush, et al, you have entered into a predicament that has no good outcome.  If this isnt a reason to impeach him, I dont know what is.  He ought to be tarred and feathered in town square.
I saw it on MSNBC this week.
I had seen this commercial before, I believe on the Daily Show (Colbert Report maybe?), and I thought it was one of their jokes.  I was amazed to find out it's real!
MSNBC? Well, that explains it (nm)

msnbc topped Fox

in convention viewers.  Fox's days are over.  There will not be enough audience for them once Baracko takes over.

Wonder when JM or SP interviews on MSNBC
Won't hold my breath on that one. They'll be ll tied up with emergency response damage control and leadership image management.
Ron Allen (MSNBC)

short clip.

The media will try to downplay her accomplishments as when Ron Allen of MSNBC tried to get me to accept that she had too little experience. Watch it here.

I watched a little of MSNBC afterwards
and they were calling it a tie. I figured they would have just called it for Obama. I am a liberal-leaning moderate and do watch MSNBC so I am well aware of their bias, but I was refreshingly surprised to see them be fair on this one.

On another note, any other libs out there been watching the Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC? She is great, totally unabashedly liberal, but funny and not in-your-face confrontational. Really smart too, Stanford and a Rhodes Scholar. Yikes, I sound like a commercial!
Only MSNBC and FOX are one sided, not CNN or the others AT ALL
but fox is by far the worst... at least MSNBC doesn't LIE outright.

So right you are. O will only allow MSNBC to exist...
to ask those tough presidential questions like boxers or briefs and what talking points would you like us to use today sir?
I see the whiners at NBC and MSNBC
have banned her for life because they can't handle the truth about their slurp fest with Obama. She basically calls them out regarding their blatant love and adoration for the Chosen One.
What would we do without those people at MSNBC?
At least they have a sense of humor -- maybe Fixed News should take a lesson.  They, too, are very funny -- they just don't mean to be!!
I found something about that on MSNBC also..sm

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31048825/
I don't watch Hannity....but as far as MSNBC...
have you watched Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann? Keith Olbermann is worse than Rush Limbaugh ever thought about being...and yes, I think Rush is condescending and I don't like the talking down on either side. It obscures any point that might be made. I can't watch Chris Matthews for more than 30 seconds and I have never made it past 1 word with Olbermann. And Chris Matthews is realllyyy bad about talking over his guests to make HIS point. So I guess every network has their Hannity/Matthews/Olbermann et al. But, some people like that condescending stuff and find things funny that I don't...but hey, it takes all kinds to make the world turn, I guess.
That's MSNBC's fault for staffing ...
a news event with commentators. Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman are not journalists. They are political commentators, and their opinions are what bring in the ratings on their programs.

But, generally speaking, journalism is just not what it used to be. Impartial reporting and confirmed information have been left at the wayside. These days it's all about getting out the big story fast, whether or not it's actually true.

Walter Cronkite would have choked himself on the air before ever starting a story with "Unconfirmed reports say . . . " How often do we hear that as the lead-in to a news story? Translation: "Rumor has it . . . "

So that's my rant for today. Matthews and Olberman shouldn't be reporting on anything.
MSNBC just stated that the FEC is is going to audit (sm)

Barack Obama. Supposedly, he accepted donations from foreign nationals. Most of these donations were made over the internet and they are going to check into this.

FEC ordered O's compaign to provide more information about large sums of money coming into his campaign recently. Someone donated $11,000 to his campaign under the name of Good Will, and that he worked for YOU. Plus gave the address of Good Will Industries. When contacted, GWI stated they did not donate this money.

Another donation was supposedly by a liquor store in NY, but when contacted, they knew nothing about it.

Although they do not have to disclose small donations ($100-$250), Good Will donated the $11,000 in small increments thinking they would not be found out.

Could it be that the sh## is going to hit the fan soon...hopefully?

MSNBC will be the only station they will allow to ask questions...

they must be talking to Hugo Chavez about how to handle the press.

MSNBC is the most biased of all the stations

Fox News was voted by the press to be the most fair in their reporting. They compared all the major stations and came up with an average of 40% of all reporting devoted to each side when reporting election news.

Other posters will state Fox is biased, but I have started watching that station and CNBC. I was MSNBC and the others when I need a laugh.

Chris Mathews from MSNBC said
it was a country. Funny they didn't jump down him for that. Then come to find out Gov. Palin never said it.

I would not doubt for a minute that the person putting out the rumors and cut downs of Gov. Palin is no other than John McCain. Would not put it past him.

Also, people forget she didn't ask for this. The GOP went to her and asked her to be the running mate. She's proven herself time and time again she is the person who really excited the party. When McCain failed she would bring the party back up, then they dump on her and treat her like this.

Shameful I say.
Video will be aired on MSNBC...sm

and yet another comment from the MSNBC stooge
no meaning to your post, just cut downs to all that don't agree with you.

Maybe you might want to watch or read the news to see what's going on....and stay away from MSNBC so you could get some real news every once in awhile there are plenty of channels to choose from. Then you might even become informed about the events going on in the country.

But your comments here go to show you are part of the problem the left-wing liberal media has. Your posts have no meaning, offer no solutions. Just try (and I say try because it isn't working) to make fun of others. Typical MSLSD attitude.
Yep, MSNBC made a point of going over that
$$$

CNN, Fx, MSNBC 1, 2 days behind internet news.

I agree. I've watched ABC,NBC,CNN,MSNBC, etc.

during the election phase and I tend to believe Fox News was the most unbiased of all of them. They give both sides of the story. I'm not talking about Hannity and Colmes, Bill O'Reilly, etc. I generally watch the news portions in the morning, Brit Humes, and Nick Cavuto in the afternoon.

Some posters on this board tend to only watch the biased stations and then call Fox News trash. Well, I don't think so, not when I compared them to the others, and believe me, I didn't find much different between any of the stations where the O was concerned. Same old, same old, whereas Fox reported not only on the O, but Bush, Palin, McCain, and didn't mince words.

I'm not about to get in an argument with anyone over TV stations, but I stand by my judgment.

MSNBC is deeply in Obama's pocket...
and please don't come back with Fox News is a conservative network. They allow and have contributors on both sides of the aisle and let them air their opinions. MSNBC doesn't allow anyone not for Obama to speak. Everyone should go to each candidate's web site and see how they stand on the issues.
Caught parts of it today on MSNBC sm
Heard that she would not do the script they had planned for her. What snipits I saw were not that complimentary of her at all. Oh well, just curious, don't think she likes to be "caught up" in anything, ignoring interviews, etc. Couric made her look bad and Couric is for Obama, I believe. Just keeping eyes and ears open, not much time left to decide. Not looking good for her as of now.
If MSNBC is such a great news outlet...

why do these numbers tell the truth about what people watch?
