In the early 90s, my husband was "layed off" from highly prosperous government defense contractor, he had been there 20 years, we had two little ones at home and were expecting our third, we had the mortgage, we had one car payment, we lost all medical coverage (and try doing that with babies/toddlers), we could not afford private insurance, and I was at home caring for my kids instead of paying for daycare. Know what, that is how I got into MT, we needed $$$ as he retrained, I needed to care for the kids, we took a second mortgage, and survived, BARELY. We went from over 60K with his income and golden benefits to barely 20K and a new one on the way. Yes, we need a SAFETY NET for deserving American WORKERS who fall on unemployment.

But right in my own neighborhood we have a family of 10 (yes ten), who have been on Welfare as long as I have known them, they have all the latest electronics, go on vacations, etc., and now two of their older daughters are pregnent, the eldest for the THIRD time, the second one in high school, and you got it, they are not marrying the baby daddy so they can collect welfare and food stamps, they are passing down the "family business." That is what has to stop! They would not do this in the first place if the did not know that they could immediately get on government assistance and live better that way than marrying and working together for their kids.

And THAT goes back to minimum wage, if we do not set a new standard for living wages in this country, we will continue to promote Welfare mentality. When it is more profitable to sit at home and collect than it is to go out and work two minimum wage jobs making nothing, guess what the kids are going to choose?? Get the living wage/minimum wage up where it is actually keeping pace with the economy, get the bonuses away from the corportate raiders and into the hands of the deserving workers.

It has happened many times in many countries. Sometimes the U.S. tries to intervene, sometimes we ignore it and sometimes we, ourselves, are the perpetrators (as with the Native Americans...we viewed them as subhumans as well as supporting regimes that to part in mass murder). We are not a guiltless superpower.
