If you believe in polls good for you - The King of Polls said
So the polls only poll a few small areas with certain demographics. You trust that. Sure maybe they only poll Hollyweird and the other liberal cities. They also reflect all the phone voter registrations, so maybe to your cat and cartoon characters it matters that Obama is ahead. Me - I'll wait for election day to find out the truth about who is ahead in the race. I've said it before and I'll say it again (and glad to know Mr. Rassmusin backs me up on this one) - polls do not matter and do not reflect a real vision of who is ahead in the race.
The polls that supply that electoral map are just that....polls...sm
Polls mean less than nothing to me. Polls intimidate and mislead the voters, in my opinion. Thanks for asking.

National ID.......
Not only won't you be able to fly, you won't be able to go into any federal building without one. A few states have said they will not do national ID cards (drivers license) and then some liberal idiots in Congress said well, if you don't go along with this government-backed pulling of your civil rights right out from under your nose, your state will receive NO government funding of any type, schools, roads, etc. Now if that ain't forced servitude into government, what is???? So many people really don't believe that is a problem. Since when do you feel you need a national ID card, for what purpose? As the government usually does, they mandate garbage on the citizens of this country in order to protect us......yea, right. No national ID card is going to protect us. If we can't protect the southern or northern borders of this country, how in the world will a little 'old card do that? It won't.....plain and simple. But then again, any time our dear old government mandates anything, the citizens of this country are screwed with fewer and fewer rights. Constitution is going down the tubes quickly.

National Guard
Strain of Iraq War Means the Relief Burden Will Have to Be Shared

By Ann Scott Tyson
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, August 31, 2005; A14

With thousands of their citizen-soldiers away fighting in Iraq, states hit hard by Hurricane Katrina scrambled to muster forces for rescue and security missions yesterday -- calling up Army bands and water-purification teams, among other units, and requesting help from distant states and the active-duty military.

As the devastation threatened to overwhelm state resources, federal authorities called on the Pentagon to mobilize active-duty aircraft, ships and troops and set up an unprecedented task force to coordinate a wider military response, said officials from the Northern Command, which oversees homeland defense.

National Guard officials in the states acknowledged that the scale of the destruction is stretching the limits of available manpower while placing another extraordinary demand on their troops -- most of whom have already served tours in Iraq or Afghanistan or in homeland defense missions since 2001.

More than 6,000 Guard members were mobilized in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida when the storm struck on Monday, with the number rising to 8,000 yesterday and hundreds more expected to be called to active duty, National Guard officials said yesterday.

Missing the personnel is the big thing in this particular event. We need our people, said Lt. Andy Thaggard, a spokesman for the Mississippi National Guard, which has a brigade of more than 4,000 troops in central Iraq. Louisiana also has about 3,000 Guard troops in Baghdad.

Mississippi has about 40 percent of its Guard force deployed or preparing to deploy and has called up all remaining Guard units for hurricane relief, Thaggard said. Those include the Army band based in Jackson, Miss. They are mustering transportation to move them south, he said. Soldiers who have lost their homes are exempt, he said.

Mississippi has requested troops and aircraft from about eight other states -- including military police and engineers from Alabama, helicopters and crews from Arkansas and Georgia, and aircraft-maintenance experts from Connecticut, who are filling in for a Mississippi maintenance unit that is heading to the Middle East.

This is the biggest disaster we've ever had, so we're going to need more aircraft than we've got, said Col. Bradly S. MacNealy, the Mississippi Army National Guard's aviation officer. Mississippi has had to borrow from Arkansas UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters fitted with hoists, using them together with the Coast Guard to pluck to safety several dozen people stranded by floodwaters, he said.

Chinook helicopters from Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi are flying the equivalent of 18 large truckloads of critical supplies -- including ice, water, food and chain saws for road-clearing crews -- to Mississippi's coast, he said.

In Alabama, all the major Guard units activated for the disaster have already served in Iraq, and some still have contingents there, said Alabama Guard spokesman Norman Arnold.

Capt. Richard Locke of the Guard's 1st Battalion 167th Infantry headed toward Mobile yesterday with a force of 400 soldiers cobbled together from four units because the rest of the battalion is in Iraq.

Carrying M-16 rifles and 9mm pistols, the soldiers are assigned to control traffic at unlighted intersections, and patrol in Humvees and on foot to prevent looting.

Recruiting and retention problems are worsening the strain on Guard forces in hurricane-ravaged states. Alabama's Army National Guard has a strength of 11,000 troops -- or 78 percent of the authorized number. We're just losing too many out the back door, Arnold said.

Considering our national debt is now......... sm
sitting at, what, $3 trillion dollars, I doubt government oversight would be of much benefit to the auto industry. In fact, I kind of feel like the government really has the audacity to ask a private industry to prove a solvent plan when the government can't even balance their own books. Either way, the auto industry is going under. It's just a matter of whether it is now or 6 months from now.

What do you think the national guard is
Our national guard is supposed to be the first responders if needed for natural disasters. Remember them? That's their job.....not the Army.

Ask yourself why you have never seen it scrolled across your evening news....they know people will explode over it but do it quietly and without OUR permission (remember this is OUR country?) and no one will be the wiser until it's done and in place.

It is on an Army website, not something the average citizen will be looking for. "Homeland tours" my butt. Permanent part of the active Army. The last thing this country needs is a full-time military brigade TOURING our country.

So you don't believe we have national security concerns?
If you do believe we have national security issues then what is your answer to keeping us safe?
McCain and National Security

McCain Lobbyist Scandal Continues: Government Warned Senator That Campaign Manager Was Undermining National Interests

The lobbying firm of McCain campaign manager Rick Davis acted in direct opposition to American foreign interests, which prompted a warning to McCain's Senate office from the United States government, according to a recent New York Times article.

Much has been reported about Rick Davis, top McCain adviser and lobbyist whose company, Davis Manafort, made its fortune in part by accepting jobs that didn't require employees to register as lobbyists. Davis has been in particular hot water for his company's work with pro-Russian Ukranian political candidates; Davis arranged for one of Putin's allies to meet with McCain during the time.

However, the New York Times has managed to take that already embarrassing story and make it even worse:

Mr. McCain may have first become aware of Davis Manafort's activities in Ukraine as far back as 2005. At that time, a staff member at the National Security Council called Mr. McCain's Senate office to complain that Mr. Davis's lobbying firm was undercutting American foreign policy in Ukraine, said a person with direct knowledge of the phone call who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A campaign spokesman, when asked whether such a call had occurred, referred a reporter to Mr. McCain's office. The spokesman there, Robert Fischer, did not respond to repeated inquiries.

Such a call might mean that Mr. McCain has been long aware of Mr. Davis's foreign clients. Mr. Davis took a leave from his firm at the end of 2006.

This isn't the only time when Davis' business interests have appeared counter to those of the United States: Davis' Ukranian contacts shared several business ties with Iran.

McCain suffered from a perception problem last month when the extent of his lobbying connection caused his campaign to fire several key staffers, as well as institute a new conflict-of-interest policy. The McCain camp has said that Davis is unaffected by the policy, as its implementation is not retroactive. Davis is no longer registered as a lobbyist.

What is your rationale for wanting government in charge of your healthcare? You have to know that if this happens, healthcare in this country IS going to be rationed, the same as it's been rationed in Great Britain, Sweden, and Canada. There will be long waits for procedures that we now take for granted being done in a very short time. I know Obama promised the same healthcare as he now has in the senate...do you believe him?
cancer and national health
It's these sort of false concerns -- LOOK OUT, SIX TO TWELVE MONTH WAITS AND BY THEN YOU'RE DEAD! DEAD!!!! -- that impede progress toward a fair healthcare system. They're repetition of talking points, nothing more. A ten-second internet search would tell you, for instance, that in the UK:

-Over 99% of people with suspected cancer are now seen by a specialist within two
weeks of being urgently referred by their GP.

-Over 99% of patients with cancer are receiving their first treatment within one
month of diagnosis.

-Over 96% of patients with cancer are receiving their first treatment within two
months of being urgently referred by their GP.

Now I'll leave it to you and Google to find the comparable numbers for the US.

The larger point is, though, that if you decide this nation doesn't need universal healthcare, then you need to say exactly who it is you don't want care provided to. Because that's all this ever comes down to: Who do you include, and who do you leave out?
It's called national security. sm

Come off it, he hired most of Daddy's friend and cabinet, he took his cues, but the poor guy could not even speak well, even with his Yale education. I hope we are not having a war on US soil soon.

WASHINGTON - Cyberspies have penetrated the U.S. electrical grid and left behind software programs that could be used to disrupt the system, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

The spies came from China, Russia and other countries, and were believed to be on a mission to navigate the U.S. electrical system and its controls, the newspaper said, citing current and former U.S. national security officials.

The intruders have not sought to damage the power grid or other key infrastructure but officials said they could try during a crisis or war, the paper said in a report on its website.
"The Chinese have attempted to map our infrastructure, such as the electrical grid," a senior intelligence official told the Journal. "So have the Russians."

The espionage appeared pervasive across the United States and does not target a particular company or region, said a former Department of Homeland Security official.

"There are intrusions, and they are growing," the former official told the paper, referring to electrical systems. "There were a lot last year."

Authorities investigating the intrusions have found software tools left behind that could be used to destroy infrastructure components, the senior intelligence official said. He added, "If we go to war with them, they will try to turn them on."

Officials said water, sewage and other infrastructure systems also were at risk.

Protecting the electrical grid and other infrastructure is a key part of the Obama administration's cybersecurity review, which is to be completed next week.

Repubublican, former National Security Advisor,
Secretary of State turned off by McCains negative campaign, impressed by O's intelligence and steady hand in the face of pressing issues and economic crisis. "Taxes are always a redistribution of wealth and not socialism." Presidents get to examine tax structure. This is what perhaps one of the most respected republican with brains looks like. Highly unlikely he would endorse a socialist terrorist. Talks about need for "inclusion," not division and sees Obama as a "transformational" figure who reaches across generations.

Yep, that pretty much covers all the bases.
Civilian National Security Force...

These are Obama's words...

"We cannot rely only on our military for our national security, we need to have a Civilian National Security force that is just as strong, just as well funded."

Civilian National Security Force
From FactCheck.org (Complete analysis at link below.)

Obama was not talking about a "security force" with guns or police powers. He was talking specifically about expanding AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps and the USA Freedom Corps, which is the volunteer initiative launched by the Bush administration after the attacks of 9/11, and about increasing the number of trained Foreign Service officers who populate U.S. embassies overseas.
AP: "Analysis: Obama Beats First National

"...Security Test"

JENNIFER LOVEN | April 12, 2009 07:23 PM EST | AP

WASHINGTON —— The U.S. economy is showing only glimmers of life and two costly wars remain in the balance, but President Barack Obama's "no drama" handling of the Indian Ocean hostage crisis proved a big win for his administration in its first critical national security test.

Obama's quiet backstage decision to authorize the Defense Department to take necessary action if Capt. Richard Phillips' life was in imminent danger gave a Navy commander the go-ahead to order snipers to fire on the pirates holding the cargo ship captain at gunpoint.

For Obama, the benefits were instantly clear: an American life saved and a major victory notched against an increasingly worrisome scourge of the seas off the Horn of Africa.

Obama's handling of the crisis showed a president who was comfortable in relying on the U.S. military, much as his predecessor, George W. Bush, did.

But it also showed a new commander in chief who was willing to use all the tools at his disposal, bringing in federal law enforcement officials to handle the judicial elements of the crisis.

The rescue appeared to vindicate Obama's muted but determined handling of the incident. What won't be known for some time is whether Obama will benefit politically.

When Obama campaigns for re-election, he may take Bush's approach of turning any such incident into evidence of his leadership acumen. On the other hand, Obama didn't go before the cameras Sunday to trumpet the success, instead releasing a written statement that saluted the bravery of the military and Phillips but claimed no credit for himself.

Also, this crisis, while topping the news now, may fade into distant memory by the time voters get a chance to take any new measure of Obama and his party.

I bet that New Orleans, Biloxi and everyplace else could sure use some National Guard help right now
Bush is not busy with this hurricaine. He is biking in Idaho or Montona or somewhere after giving a speech to the VFW about how we have to stay in Iraq to honor those killed in Iraq. But wouldn't it be really really helpful if the National Guard was in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama instead of Iraq being killed to honor those already killed. Another thing, if he talked to Sheehan or this soldier, he would have to talk to ALL of them, God forbid.

It is new kid on the block as a national entity. 60 years young.
I don't need to consult Wikipedia. I've witnessed and dealt with Israeli atrocities first hand over the past 40+ years. Palestine has always been of interest to me. Israel's theft of Palestine occurred in my birth year.

In response to your oh-so-typical anti-Semite accusation, my issues are not with the people of faith in any religion. Rather, I take strong exception to the ugly politicized version of Jewish nationalism/Zionism in much the same way I do with politicized Islam. Palestinians did not make this into a religious war. For them, it is a question of national identity, as you very well know. So let's not pretend this is about hatred of Jews. The shame is on you to try to drag God into the ungodly.

My artificial intelligence includes 4 decades of dedicated research, personal acquaintance with scores of Palestinians, too numerous to count Arabs and progressive Jews who do not identify with the blood-thirsty behavior of their so-called leadership, political activism, association by marriage, relatives and the fact that I have lived in the region and experienced first-hand the devastation exacted at the hand of Israel.

Sabra and Shatila took me off any high horse I may have ever been on. You might want to remember that horror and dismount yourself. You are not talking to some ill-informed US media drone here, so don't try to clobber me with your "we were there first" nonsense. You and I both know that is hogwash and from where I sit, you are the one who is riding around in that bubble of blather.

Bottom line time. It's the occupation, stupid. Zionists will never have a moment's peace as long as they can't deal with that one universal truth. One only has to inspect the bloodshed statistics at the hands of the Israelis and the history of the wars they have fought to understand who the terrorists are and who cannot deal with the very notion of peace on earth. The ice water that runs through your veins and your lack of responsibiity and remorse over the pain and suffering Israel has caused speaks volumes about the humanitarian aspects of this tragedy.

I'm not in this for the support I may or may not get from them. For me, it is a simple question of right and wrong, but for the record, I enjoy open acceptance among my Arab friends and relatives. My relationships with them have enriched my life beyond measure.
Between May and July 2001, the National Security Agency reported
at least 33 different intercepts indicating a possible imminent al Qaeda attack. The FBI issued 216 secret, internal threat warnings between January 1 and September 10, 2001, of which 6 mentioned possible attacks against airports or airlines. The Federal Aviation Administration issued 15 notices of possible terrorist threats against American airlines. The State Department issued 9 separate warnings during the same period to embassies and citizens abroad, including 5 that highlighted a general threat to Americans all over the world.

Yeah, that Bill Clinton wasn't doing his job alright.

Oh, wait.
Support for national health care from surprizing source
MONDAY, March 31 (HealthDay News) -- A majority of American doctors now support the concept of national health insurance, which represents a shift in thinking over the past five years, a new survey finds.
Typically, national health insurance plans involve a single, federally administered social insurance fund that guarantees health coverage for everyone. In most cases, these plans eliminate or substantially reduce the role of private insurance companies.

A survey conducted last year of 2,193 physicians across the United States found that 59 percent support "government legislation to establish national health insurance," while 32 percent oppose it, and 9 percent are neutral. In 2002, a similar survey found that 49 percent of physicians supported the concept, while 40 percent opposed it.

"Many claim to speak for physicians and reflect their views. We asked doctors directly and found that, contrary to conventional wisdom, most doctors support the government creating national health insurance," study author Dr. Aaron E. Carroll, director of Indiana University's Center for Health Policy and Professionalism Research, said in a prepared statement.

The new findings were included in a study published March 31 in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Support for national health insurance has increased across all medical specialties, said study co-author Dr. Ronald T. Ackermann, associate director of the Center for Health Policy and Professionalism Research at Indiana University's School of Medicine.

"Across the board, more physicians feel that our fragmented and for-profit insurance system is obstructing good patient care, and a majority now support national insurance as the remedy," Ackermann said in a prepared statement.

The strongest support for NHI is among psychiatrists (83 percent), pediatric sub-specialists (71 percent), emergency medicine physicians (69 percent), general pediatricians (65 percent), general internists (64 percent), and family physicians (60 percent). About 55 percent of general surgeons support NIH, roughly double their level of support in 2002.

About 47 million Americans lack health insurance coverage, and it's believed another 50 million are underinsured. Health-care costs in the United States are increasing about 7 percent a year, twice the rate of inflation. Many doctors are concerned about these issues, according to background information in the study.

Last December, the 124,000-member American College of Physicians -- the nation's largest medical specialty group -- endorsed a single-payer national health insurance program.

Make that alter-ego. Changing names according to post content = literary license. I'm sure you've heard of it before, being so intimately acquainted with the literary world and all. Makes things a bit more intriguing. Enables one to dial back rabid mad-dog rhetoric.

Case in point. You don't launch into your "5-paragraph volleys" unless you think you are talking to GT. As BW, I enjoy the luxury of not having to drag out an entire arsenal of put-downs just to make myself understood, since you can’t quite figure out who you are talking to. Usually I am pretty good about revealing the aliases eventually, but not always. That is another prerogative of free speech.

BTW, when you lift content and ideas from somebody else's post, it's customary to use quotes. Disciple? Shades of the gospel according to Saint Hannity. Another suggestion would be that when you plagiarize thought or content, at least be careful not to put it into responses addressed to the original author.

Yes, Congress has a lower rating than Bush. He wields a powerful weapon that empowers him to obstruct, stall and reverse any sort of viable legislative initiatives. It's called the veto pen. In this last session, he has used it 8 times but Congress has managed to override him on 4 of those vetoes. They at have at least shown more ability than Bush to cross the aisle and engage themselves in effective bipartisan initiatives and convince them to vote against their fearless leader.

You and the pubs make no excuses for being too inept at reaching consensus (a decidedly American concept). Obstruction, stalling and reversals are akin to dodges, deceive and deflections. They are the strategies used by petty dictators and their parties in a setting of “might makes right,” that divide and conquer approach, rather than taking the high road and exerting the effort or harboring the desire to create a representative government body. Bipartisanship has never been his forte anyway. No surprise there.

Polls are interesting, but not terribly reliable, given the problems that arise when you start to consider the source, sift through bias, skewing and the like. More than likely, the polls offer the most reliable reflection of public opinion would be the approval ratings of the candidates, not that status quo that is destined to be decimated come November. Most dems are just about as frustrated with the whole mess as you are. On that we can agree. But my take on approval ratings, at least in terms the current state of affairs in Congress and the executive branch, is that the low numbers reflect a much more deep-seated frustration and anger toward being lied to about the war and the incalculable costs in terms of human life as well as tax dollars, the state of the economy and the perception that nobody anywhere is doing anything, typical of a lame duck in a campaign year. The nation as a whole is in a really bad mood, to be sure. They simply don't approve of anything, at the moment.

More than likely, this will play itself with a major overhaul on both sides of the aisle. Who comes out on top in Congress in terms of numbers is anybody’s guess.

Polls are even at 42%
per a CBS poll taken on Wednesday, so this does not include Palin's speech or McCain's acceptance speech.

A new Rasmussen poll of 1,000 likely voters shows that by a
stunning five-to-one margin, Americans believe the media

The new poll comes on the heels of last week's survey that
discovered by a margin of 10 to 1, the public believes the
media are trying to hurt Republican Vice Presidential
nominee Sarah Palin.

Shockingly, Democrats and "unaffiliated" voters both believe
that journalists are attempting to help Obama.

How much do you believe polls?
Yahoo had some info on the Rasumussen Polls and I went to their website to check it out: www.rasmussenreports.com

They have an electoral college page that shows the current "vote" at 248-163 in favor of Obama. I'm going to have to do some research and see how accurate polls were in previous presidential elections. They have it broken down by state and it is pretty interesting, if numbers are your thing!

For all who believe in polls

I don't believe in polls but a lot of posters like to use them to try to make some sort of point....

Today's Gallup poll (one of the most trusted) - Obama 49, McCain 47 -

Like I say....way to close to predict a winner.  I also heard some students after last nights debate that said they were still undecided said if they had to vote right now they'd choose McCain.  Goes to show not every single person/young person voting Obama.

polls
Thanks, it is

49.5 for Obama
42.7 for McCain.

Obama is 6.8 points ahead.
Well, actually there are polls to confirm this
I don't believe the word "sick" was part of the poll but it comes pretty darn close to the majority of America's current view of this administration and this war.
These polls are so fickle.

Up and down, up and down.

I just don't know if he can stand the heat.  I have so far not been impressed with Obama.  Right now it seems that people are using him against a Hillary vote and not necessarily for anything he says or stands for.  Is it just me, or does the man lack conviction or passion of any kind?  He doesn't ever really say anything of substance and not very good at defending what positions he has taken a stand on.  I'm not sure if I want someone of so little experience as President.

This is how I would like to see it play out:  HIllary elected and breaks some of the ice by implanting some changes followed up by either Edwards or Obama at the next election to implement more changes.  I say this because I believe people inherently don't like change and they especially don't like fast change.  So if Obama or Edwards were to beat out Hillary and try to implement such sweeping changes, I don't think those changes could sustain themselves.  Obama doesn't strike me as being very forceful and may buckle, and Edwards comes across as too forceful and I think would have trouble during their administrations amongst their peers.

I don't put much stock in polls....
however, McCain is the first to break the 50% mark. And I trust Gallup and rasmussen more than I trust Fox polls, CNN polls or other media outlet polls. Although CBS did show McCain with a lead too. Still, it is encouraging, and a pretty big whoop...lol
If polls are samples of what is to come...
that is very good for McCain. Still ahead in the popular vote and making big gains in swing states. So...great. If polls are a sample of what is to come...it is good news for McCain.
Polls as of today....
Gallup:
Gallup Daily: McCain 47%, Obama 45%

McCain retains a three-point advantage for the third straight day, 50% to 47% (see recent daily results).

Real Clear Politics
RCP Average 09/05 - 09/13 -- McCain 47.5 Obama 45.2 McCain +2.3

McCain has also diminished Obama's lead in many of the "swing states" and is even within 2 points in Pennsylvania, which is unheard of. Pennsylvania nearly always goes democratic. McCain leads in Ohio. He has gone into the lead in New Mexico and Nevada. That has been steady for several days now.

All that being said...the polls said Kerry should have won many states handily...but he didn't. Polls can be very misleading. We won't know until election night...although this is the first time in how long that a Republican was leading in the polls at this point?

It is a very interesting campaign, that's for darned sure.
Polls are usually wrong. I don't put much
