Firefighters in reverse discrimination case.
I heard last night about these firefighters who were all given tests and the object was to allow the top scorers to get promotions. All the firefighters were given the same material, same amount of study time, and the same exact tests. After the tests were done, it was noted that minorities scored lower on the test and so they basically threw the tests out. Some of these guys who scored high are calling it discrimination because they studied, worked hard, and had higher scores and were denied promotions.
I am so sick and tired of skilled people not getting jobs because we have to fill so many spots with minorities. If a minority is skilled for the job, by all means....give them the promotion and/or hire them. But to pick a minority who had low test scores over someone who had high test scores.....to me that is picking someone for the job based on race and I think that is wrong. I understand that minorities want equal rights and equal pay and all that jazz and I'm totally for that.....but earn it. Don't just expect it. Study, work hard, learn skills. For us to hire people just because we have a minority quota is just wrong. We are rewarding mediocrity.
Can you just imagine if this was the other way around. Just imagine if it were the minorities that scored higher and they threw the test scores out. Talk about a major law suit that they would win in a heart beat.

....my mom is, she has always been party faithful. She couldn't tell me why she voted for either Gore or Kerry, she simply did. You never heard an unkind word from her on either party. And you don't now either. Last I semi-talked politics with her, she was for Hillary, but again, she couldn't exactly tell me why, except that she was a democrat. I have yet to ask if she's now for Obama, though.
I voted for McGovern in high school (not the real deal as I was underage), but I remember the dems as having real ideals back then...then something happened along the way...may have been Carter, I don't know.
Hey sam, my test got buried in posts today, but if you go to page 2, I posted a website that tested if you are liberal or conservative....I was so surprised to see that I was still 20% liberal!. I was talking about Sarah herself being the example, not her daughter. I think politicians should be held to a higher standard. Yeah, I know that Sarah wasn't the one that got pregnant, but in this day and age that doesn't matter too much. I think given the fact that the republican party was going to have a hard time winning the election anyway (considering the war, the economy, Bush, etc), it was just a bad choice to pick someone in that situation as a running mate. Having said that, I'm not sure just how much, if any, that situation actually hurt the ticket. If it did hurt the ticket then I would think that it hurt them more with pub votes more than with dems.

I was never a fan of Rush.....until lately. I agree with much of what he says. Even we don't or the government doesn't, what the heck gives them the right to petition anything? Why cant Rush say what he wants? Isn't that one of our BASIC freedoms? I cannot believe that supporters of O are not MAD about this. Let Bush (who I am NOT a fan of) or his administration or congress or dems or repubs or anyone working in the government at the time that he was in office, let them try to do something like this and there would be a huge deal over it with the people. This is just the beginning of the takeover for us. Flame if you will but you guys made a huge mistake!

It's already happening in my city
People are getting fed up here with the lack of law enforcement and judicial enforcement that they are taking the law into their own hands. On average of three times a month owners are shooting intruders and attackers in their own home or own their property because they know that law enforcement will either #1 show up way to late to stop the crime or #2 not show up at all! Even if the subject is apprehended the likelihood that they'll only get a slap on the wrist (if even that) by the judicial system is very high.
People are plain fed up where I live---especially with crimes against children and families.

The last time we had a democrat president most of my family, freinds, and freinds family WERE homeless. Lost their jobs, lost their homes, lived in their cars, went to the soup kitchens once a day for a meal. The last democrat president implemented NAFTA (not sure implemented is the right word - but was responsible for the start of our jobs going overseas). Continued the deficit (not a surplus like he conned everyone he did). So luckily Bush is not running again so no chance of us being homeless. McCain and Palin gives us experience, loyalty, and a fresh face and ideas for the country. Obama and Biden gives us inexperience, lies, and false hopes. I don't want to end up homeless and broke so therefore I will NOT be voting for Obama. Obama is more of the same except with different packaging.

Ever heard of public aid or food stamps? From what I have gathered, the difference is that Obama's plan will help people who are working and being paid crappy wages as opposed to the ones who sit on their butts watching soaps all day. As for your situation with your employees, try firing them when they don't show up and don't be so lenient. I would bet it would only taking getting rid of a few to set an example for the others as to what is acceptable and what isn't.

What is happening now is affected by what happened then...
and the fact remains that the Democratic party did, as a whole, seek to keep African Americans enslaved and after the Republicans, led by Abe Lincoln, abolished slavery, the Democrats (and yes, a minority of southern Republicans), did effectively deny African Americans the right to vote for another 90 years. The 60's are also part of history...and it was then and only then that African Americans got the clear right to vote. I think that is a bit more than a "bad decision." And yes it has changed, albeit after the fight (the civil war) and after numerous attempts by Republican congresses to try to override it...finally enough Northern Democrats did cross over and the right to vote was given. Certainly things have changed. It is just incorrect to state that the Democratic party has always been of a "liberal" view. They have not. That does not mean that Democrats of today follow that same mantra (some do, but they are leftovers of the past). DW, it should be hurtful to know that this occurred. Revisionist history has caused the majority of African Americans in this country, in fact most young people of this country, not to know what happened in those days. I am sure if you polled African Americans on the street they would have no idea that the Democratic party and a minority of the Republican party as well sought to keep them oppressed for 90 years AFTER the Civil War. Most of them probably think the Republican party was responsible for the whole thing. And before the attacks start...I do not consider myself Republican. I have tendencies that go both ways, and I don't think there is a name for that...other than Independent.
Yes, Bush bashing is hurtful in my mind not because I am a big Bush fan, but I do not understand why some people get such joy in making fun of someone. It reminds me of kids in a schoolyard. I don't see why people can't discuss his policies they object to and that sort of thing, but the incessant ya-ya'ing about his intelligence, he's an embarrassment...yada yada. Yes, that is hurtful on a purely human level.
The past was brought up in response to someone talking about how conservatives were probably "afraid" of the Salt Lake City major because he was liberal and worked for civil rights, yada yada. While working for civil rights may be a liberal trait, as recently as the 60's it was not. I have been called down many a time for things that happened in the "past." We really cannot shove the past under the rug. It is part of who, and what, we are.
And I think we can all agree that thank God, we all learned from it.

we have one refundable tax credit now that I know of...the earned income tax credit. What Obama wants to do is expand that dramatically, and that is most definitely new. That credit does not stretch to that entire 30-40% of people who don't pay federal income taxes. Obama's plan WILL. Because those people comprise part of that 30-40%. How can he give a tax CUT to 95% of Americans otherwise? THAT is my point. Why on earth tax small businesses and yes, even large corporations MORE, so you can give people on welfare a refundable tax credit check?? In my opinion, extending refundable tax credits to people already on the government t*t is wrong, wrong, wrong.
Yes, we have a refundable tax credit now that benefits some persons. What Obama proposes is taking that from where the earned income tax credit is all the way to the bottom. That is his starting from the bottom theory. How many times have we heard that?

There was a person at the polls today that was not on the list as a registered voter. I happened to overhear part of the conversation from where I stood but did not hear the solution to the voter's problem.

Racism does not have to be whites not accepting blacks. It can also be blacks not accepting whites. And that does happen. I would not approve of anybody that was trying to be a leader of this great country siding with one or the other. They need to accept both blacks and whites. Obviously, Obama does not think that way. So what, if he was a teen when he wrote these books. They should never have been published if he does not agree with what is in them.
All this mess that is going on now did not start with George Bush. Congress controls this country, with the president having veto power. The Dems have been in power insofar as Congress goes for the last two years. But it started even before then.
Wake up, America! You think with all our news media announcing to the world what we are getting ready to do that if Iraq had WMD they would not have known what was going on over here and what our plans were and most likely would have moved the WMD to another country.

Will racism play a major roll in this election? You betcha. However, you cannot say that people not voting for Obama are racist. Some of them are, but not all of them. How many Obama supporters are voting for him just because he is black? Probably a heck of a lot....so you have racism on both sides here.
Yesterday someone posted and used Barrack Obama's middle name and they were called racist for doing so. I do not see how this is racist. It is the man's name. How can someone be racist for calling him by his name?
I seriously am tired of people playing the race card. Yes, racism is out there and it will play a part in this election but that most definitely goes on both sides. You have your wacko people yelling "kill him" at a McCain rally. The media tried to say it happened again at a Palin rally, but that is untrue. It was only yelled during a McCain speech. That was wrong and crazy people like that are way out of line. They are also giving good people who are McCain supporters bad names. Then you have Obama's supporters. There are many good people who are on Obama's side and yet there are those crazy wack jobs on his side as well who are only voting for him because he IS black and most certainly will be screaming racism if Obama should lose.
Both sides are guilty of racism. Some are afraid of the crazy people yelling "kill him" and others are afraid of crazy Obama supporters rioting if he should lose. It goes both ways. So stop blaming one side or the other. They both have nut job racists. I'm just tired of hearing about this.

I can't help but wish that everyone making less than $50,000 a year who opposes Obama would take a few moments to sit quietly and really question him/herself about the racial question. If those folks were honest with themselves, really honest, I bet they'd be quite surprised. I can't think of any other reason why folks making $50,000 or less (much less) a year would support the Republicans, just simple racism.

On June 28 2007 a young black defendant Mychal Bell was found guilty of aggravated assault against a young white man by an all white jury despite conflicting testimony from witnesses.
His defense lawyer was incompetent at the very least and didn't even call the only adult to witness what happened to the stand. This man's testimony could have concievably blown the prosecuters case out of the water.
Originally the prosecuter tryed to charge Mychal and others with attempted murder for being involved in what was basically a fight and only backed off because of a worlwide public out cry. read the creed for Obama's church...and read some of his pastor mentor's sermons...and some of the speeches and quotes of their friend Louis Farrakhan. That, my friend, is the very definition of racism. When you read the creed of the church, substitute the word "white" everywhere the word "black" is used and tell me it is not racist. We do NOT need a racist in the White House.

because vanilla is white? LOL. The point was that if you are preaching change, and you pick the guy who has been a senator for 30-some years and may not LIVE in DC but is certainly part of the DC establishment...that is not change, it is picking "vanilla" meaning generic, and Joe Biden is definitely a generic DC liberal. Definitely not a change from DC politics...which is exactly opposite from what Obama has been saying he wanted to do..get away from politics as usual in DC.
