A book reference.  How refreshing.  The title is a bit of a turn-off.  “Shut up” does not sound terribly open-minded.  Pure patriotism, religious worship and flag-waving as universal practices are beautiful to behold.  When they turn provincial and aim to elevate themselves as “better” than others, they become elite.  Plenty of elitists live in the cities and in rural areas.  It’s not a question of geography and not a valid point.

Gas guzzling SUVs in light of current gas prices and environmental concerns and gun ownership/proliferation in light of crime and the suffering it brings, I suppose could be viewed by some as kind of stupid but seems way off the subject of elitism.  These are political issues and in civil discourse, I am sure there are valid points on both sides of the fence.

What does the “anti-war thugs” reference and spitting have to do with the elite?  Thugs are thugs, but they do not represent the majority of perfectly normal American folks who are against the war.

Freedom of speech poses no risk to me.  Not afraid of a little dialog.
